Install a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD to expand PS5 storage and play PS5 games directly from the new drive. The SSD must be 250 GB to 8 TB, use the M.2 Key M format, fit within Sony’s 25 mm width and 11.25 mm total thickness limits with its heatsink installed, and deliver Sony’s recommended sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. Update the console, power it down completely, install the drive in the expansion bay, then format it when the PS5 starts.

What the M.2 expansion adds to a PS5

PS5 games installed on an internal M.2 expansion drive can be downloaded, updated and played directly from that drive. This is the important distinction from USB extended storage: a USB drive can hold PS5 games, but you must copy those games back to console storage before playing them. An M.2 SSD avoids that extra transfer and is intended for active PS5 game storage.

Adding capacity is especially useful as large first-party and third-party PS5 releases continue to occupy substantial space. The storage upgrade lets you keep more games installed at once; it does not establish that any particular upcoming exclusive requires an M.2 SSD. Sony’s general guidance supports the capacity and direct-play benefit, while performance for an individual game can vary. Sony also cautions that some games may not perform exactly as they do from the PS5’s internal SSD.

Check compatibility before buying

Do not rely only on a retailer’s “PS5 compatible” label. Verify the complete SSD-and-cooling assembly against Sony’s limits, because a bare drive may fit while the same drive with a heatsink does not.

Interface and protocol

The drive must be an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4x4 and the Key M connector. M.2 SATA drives are not supported, even though they use the same broad M.2 card shape. Check the specification line for the interface and protocol rather than inferring compatibility from the connector or a product photograph.

Capacity

Sony supports capacities from 250 GB through 8 TB. Capacity printed on the package is the drive’s nominal size; after formatting, the PS5 will show less usable space. Formatting uses the entire M.2 drive, so treat a newly installed drive as dedicated PS5 storage rather than a disk you can divide into several volumes.

Physical size with the heatsink installed

The measurements that matter are the finished assembly’s dimensions. The width cannot exceed 25 mm and the total thickness cannot exceed 11.25 mm. Those limits include the SSD, heatsink and heat-transfer material. Supported lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80 and 110 mm; the form-factor numbers 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 correspond to those lengths and a 22 mm card width.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure or obtain the manufacturer’s assembled dimensions. A drive marketed as a PS5 fit may still be unsuitable if its cooling hardware is too tall or wide.

Read speed

Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that every drive at that rating will behave identically in every game. Use the manufacturer’s stated sequential-read figure for the exact model and capacity you intend to buy.

Heat dissipation

A cooling solution is mandatory. Sony’s support guidance says: “Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heat sink or heat transfer sheet.” Choose either a drive with an integrated heatsink or a bare drive paired with a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet that stay within the 25 mm and 11.25 mm limits. Do not install a bare SSD and plan to add cooling later.

Choose the right storage size for upcoming games

250 GB to 1 TB

The lower end of Sony’s range can work when you need a modest expansion and regularly remove completed games. Because the console consumes some space for formatting and system management, nominal capacity is not the same as free space. A smaller drive also leaves less room for several large releases arriving close together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2 TB

A 2 TB model is a practical middle choice for players who want a substantial library available without repeatedly moving games. It provides more headroom for patches and downloadable content than the smallest supported drives while remaining within Sony’s capacity range.

4 TB to 8 TB

Choose the larger capacities when you want to keep many large PS5 games installed for an extended period. The 8 TB ceiling is Sony’s maximum supported capacity. A larger drive does not make a game load faster than a properly specified smaller drive; it primarily reduces how often you need to delete or move games.

For any capacity, reserve room for updates rather than filling the drive completely. Keeping free space makes routine installs and updates easier and avoids an urgent transfer when a new exclusive launches.

Prepare the console and workspace

  • Install the latest PS5 system software before opening the console.
  • Finish or pause downloads and close running games.
  • Shut the PS5 down fully; do not use Rest Mode.
  • Unplug the AC cable and every other connection.
  • Move the console to a soft, flat, stable surface where you can work without putting pressure on the panels.
  • Have the M.2 SSD, its compatible heatsink and heat-transfer sheet (if required), and the console’s expansion-slot screw and spacer ready.

Handle the SSD by its edges. Avoid touching the connector contacts or placing the board on a conductive or dirty surface. Keep track of the small screw and spacer while the expansion bay is open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to install the M.2 SSD

  1. Update system software. From the PS5 home screen, install the latest available system-software update before disconnecting the console. Performing this first means the console can recognize and prepare the expansion drive immediately after installation.
  2. Power off and disconnect the PS5. Shut it down completely, wait for the power indicator to finish going dark, then unplug the AC cable and all other cables. Place the console on the soft, flat surface you prepared.
  3. Remove the appropriate console cover. Follow the cover-removal direction for your PS5 model and lift off the panel that exposes the expansion bay. Do not force a panel; reposition the console as needed so the cover can slide or lift in its intended direction.
  4. Remove the expansion-slot cover. Take off the small cover over the M.2 bay and set it aside with the console panel.
  5. Set the spacer for the SSD length. Remove the retaining screw and the spacer from their current position. Move the spacer to the hole that matches the SSD’s length: 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm. Leave the screw ready for the final fastening step.
  6. Insert the SSD diagonally. Hold the drive by its edges. Align the notch in the M.2 connector with the expansion connector, then slide the SSD into the slot at a diagonal angle until it is fully seated. Do not press the far end down while the connector is still misaligned.
  7. Lower and secure the drive. Tilt the free end of the SSD down until it rests over the correctly positioned spacer. Fasten it with the supplied screw. The drive should lie flat and be held firmly without bending the board or overtightening the screw.
  8. Reinstall the expansion-slot cover and console cover. Confirm that the SSD and heatsink are not contacting the cover and that both covers sit flush. Replace the expansion-slot cover first, then refit the main console panel.
  9. Reconnect and start the PS5. Reconnect the AC cable and the other cables, then power on the console.
  10. Format the M.2 drive when prompted. Follow the on-screen formatting guide the first time the PS5 detects the drive. Formatting uses the entire M.2 SSD and deletes any data on it, so do not install a drive containing files you need.

After formatting: install and move games

Once formatting completes, the M.2 SSD appears as an available storage location. Use the PS5 storage settings to choose where new games and applications are installed, or move existing PS5 games from console storage to the M.2 drive. Games installed there can be launched, updated and played directly.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

When planning for an upcoming exclusive, install it to the M.2 drive rather than treating the drive as an archive. A USB extended-storage device remains useful for holding PS5 games you are not currently playing, but those games must be copied back to console storage before they can run. The M.2 expansion avoids that copy-back step.

Keep the original installation or download source available for major updates. A game can remain installed on the M.2 drive while receiving updates there, provided the drive has enough free space.

What Sony’s compatibility warning means

Meeting the headline specifications does not create a blanket guarantee. Sony does not guarantee every third-party SSD that falls within the listed interface, speed, capacity and dimensions. Its guidance also warns that some games may not perform exactly like they do on the internal SSD.

Use the specifications as a screening checklist, not as a promise of identical behavior. Before purchase, verify the exact model number, the capacity-specific speed rating, the assembled heatsink dimensions and the manufacturer’s support terms. “PS5 compatible” is a useful starting claim, but the complete assembly still has to fit Sony’s measurements.

Buying checklist: drive, cooling and support

  • Exact interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M; reject M.2 SATA models.
  • Capacity: between 250 GB and 8 TB.
  • Length: one of 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm.
  • Read performance: 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster is Sony’s recommendation.
  • Complete width: no more than 25 mm after the heatsink is installed.
  • Complete thickness: no more than 11.25 mm after the heatsink and heat-transfer material are installed.
  • Cooling: integrated heatsink, or a correctly sized heatsink plus heat-transfer sheet.
  • Warranty and support: keep the manufacturer’s documentation and exact model information in case troubleshooting is required.
  • Price: compare the finished, cooled assembly rather than comparing bare-drive prices with heatsink-equipped models.

Troubleshooting installation and detection problems

The PS5 does not detect the drive

  • Power the console off and disconnect it before reopening the bay.
  • Check that the SSD is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M, not M.2 SATA.
  • Remove and reinsert the SSD diagonally, making sure the notch is aligned and the connector is fully seated before lowering the drive.
  • Confirm that the spacer is in the hole matching the SSD’s length and that the retaining screw holds the drive flat.
  • Verify that the heatsink has not prevented the expansion-slot cover from closing or pushed the SSD out of alignment.
  • Confirm that the drive capacity falls between 250 GB and 8 TB.

The cover will not close or sits unevenly

Stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the complete assembly’s 25 mm maximum width and 11.25 mm maximum thickness. An oversized heatsink or a poorly positioned heat-transfer sheet is the usual physical cause. Remove the assembly and use a cooling solution that is specifically sized to remain within Sony’s limits.

The console requests formatting again

Allow the PS5 to complete its on-screen formatting process if the drive is new or has been moved from another device. Formatting erases the entire M.2 SSD. If the prompt appears after an interrupted installation, power down fully, reseat the drive and follow the prompt again.

A game behaves differently after moving it

Confirm that the game is fully updated and that the drive meets Sony’s recommended speed and cooling requirements. Sony does not promise that every game will perform exactly as it does from the internal SSD, so a difference in a particular title is not automatically evidence that the installation failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying an M.2 SATA drive because its card shape looks correct.
  • Installing a bare SSD without a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet.
  • Checking the bare SSD’s dimensions but not the assembled dimensions.
  • Using a drive longer than the supported 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm positions.
  • Forcing the SSD straight down instead of inserting it diagonally first.
  • Opening the console while it is connected to power or in Rest Mode.
  • Assuming a “PS5 compatible” label overrides Sony’s own interface, speed and size requirements.
  • Formatting a drive that contains files you intended to keep.
  • Expecting USB extended storage to run PS5 games directly.
  • Filling the expansion drive completely and leaving no room for patches or downloadable content.

Can an M.2 SSD make an upcoming exclusive run better?

An M.2 SSD’s clear benefit is capacity and direct play from the expansion drive. It lets you keep more PS5 games installed and avoids repeatedly copying titles from USB storage. The available guidance does not establish that a named future exclusive requires an M.2 SSD, nor does it promise that a future title will match the internal SSD’s performance. Treat the upgrade as a way to prepare storage capacity, not as a guaranteed performance requirement for a particular unreleased game.

For the best chance of a smooth installation, select a Gen4x4 NVMe drive at or above Sony’s recommended read speed, use effective cooling, verify the assembled measurements, and leave free capacity for updates. Those checks address the practical reasons to add M.2 storage without claiming more than Sony’s compatibility guidance supports.
