On most Motorola phones, install an Android update from Settings > System > System updates (or the equivalent menu on your model), then select Check for updates and follow the on-screen instructions. Use Wi‑Fi where possible, charge to at least 75% as a general Android precaution, back up important data, and do not interrupt the installation. Afterward, check the Android version, security-update level, and build number in About phone.
What you need before starting
The normal Motorola update is an over-the-air installation performed in the phone’s Settings app. You do not normally need to buy software, connect a computer, or use a repair utility. A few minutes of preparation reduces the chance of a failed download or an unpleasant surprise.
Use Wi‑Fi when practical
Android updates can be large. Connect to a trusted Wi‑Fi network to avoid consuming mobile data or incurring carrier charges. Motorola notes that a security update may download over mobile data in some circumstances when Wi‑Fi is unavailable, so check your data plan before proceeding without Wi‑Fi. If you are using a public network, avoid one that requires repeated browser sign-ins or frequently drops the connection; a stable connection is less likely to make the download restart.
Charge the phone
Google’s general Android guidance recommends charging to at least 75% before updating. That is a preparation recommendation from Google, not a Motorola-specific minimum. Motorola’s own device guidance is to have enough battery to complete the update. If the battery is low, connect the phone to its charger and leave it connected during the download and installation. Keep the cable firmly connected and avoid starting just before you need to leave with the phone.

Back up important information
A backup is a sensible precaution, not evidence that a routine update normally erases your files. Google’s documented manual backup route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Tap All services.
- Choose Backup.
- Tap Back up now.
Open Backup details and review what is covered. Google says Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, but individual apps may not back up or restore every setting or item of data. A backup may take up to 24 hours to complete fully, so start it well before an update if you need the most complete copy possible. Keep separate copies of irreplaceable photos, documents, authenticator recovery codes, or app-specific data when those services provide their own export or backup option.
Check that the phone is signed in to the Google account you expect to use for restoration, and note any app that has its own backup or export command. Do not assume that a Google backup includes every downloaded file, game save, work profile, or sign-in token. The purpose of this preparation is to give you a recovery option if an app needs to be set up again, not to suggest that a standard update is designed to wipe the phone.
Find the update checker on your Motorola
Menu names vary with the phone model, Android release, and Motorola software version. Use the path that appears on your device; a different label does not by itself indicate a problem.

If you cannot spot it, use the Settings search field for System updates. Select the result that opens the built-in updater rather than a third-party app. The exact labels and order can differ, so compare what you see with the official support information for your model and country.
Before tapping a result, confirm that it is part of Settings and not an advertisement or an independently installed “update” utility. Motorola’s ordinary process does not require downloading a random APK or visiting an unofficial website. If a notification opens the updater, you can still verify the same information from Settings so you know which version is being offered.
Install the update step by step
- Connect and prepare. Join Wi‑Fi if available, charge the phone to at least 75% when possible, and finish the backup steps above.
- Open the updater. Go to Settings > System > System updates, or use the model-specific path listed above.
- Check for an update. Tap Check for updates. The phone contacts Motorola’s update service and reports whether software is available for that device.
- Read the prompt. If an update is offered, review the information shown on the phone, including any restart or installation notice. Make sure the phone remains connected to power and Wi‑Fi if you are using them.
- Download and install. Tap the on-screen command to download and install, then follow every prompt. The wording can vary by model and Android version.
- Let the phone finish. The device may restart and display a progress screen. Do not power it off, remove the battery, deliberately interrupt the process, or repeatedly press buttons while installation is underway. Motorola’s instructions are to allow the installation to complete and follow the device’s prompts; the official guidance does not promise a fixed installation time.
- Unlock after the restart. Enter your screen lock if requested and wait until the home screen and essential services are responsive before treating the update as complete.
The download phase and installation phase may look different. A download can pause while the connection changes, whereas an installation screen generally means the phone is applying the package. In either case, use the instructions displayed on the device rather than forcing a restart. If the updater requests another confirmation, read it carefully; some phones separate downloading from the final restart.

Confirm that the update installed
Do not rely only on the phone restarting. Check the software information recorded by the device.
Check Android version and build information
On many Motorola phones, open Settings > About phone > Device details > Android version. Your model may use a slightly different label or place the information directly under About phone. Google identifies the following fields as useful confirmation points:

Record the build number and security-update date if you need to contact Motorola or your carrier. Those details, together with the exact model and region, make an eligibility question much easier to answer. A major Android version can remain unchanged when a smaller security update is installed, so compare the field named in the update notice rather than expecting every field to change at once.
Check the updater once more if the result is unclear
If the phone reports that it is current and the version information has not changed, the update may not have been intended for your device yet. Do not assume that a delayed update means the installation failed; use the rollout checks in the next section. If the phone restarted normally but shows an explicit installation error, write down that message before dismissing it.

Why an update may not appear
Motorola releases are not necessarily simultaneous. Motorola explains that it must test many software versions across phone models, regions, and distribution channels. Carrier and other partner certifications can also affect timing. Consequently, two owners of the same model, even in one country, may see an update at different times.
Check the details that determine eligibility
- Exact model: A family name can cover several regional or carrier variants with different software packages.
- Country or region: Release schedules and certification requirements differ by market.
- Carrier or sales channel: A carrier-branded phone may follow a different approval path from an unlocked model.
- Current build: The installed build helps support staff identify whether an intermediate release is required.
First make sure the phone is online, then return to the built-in System updates screen and run the check again. If it says the phone is up to date, that can reflect staged rollout timing or device eligibility rather than a fault. For a definitive answer, provide Motorola support with the exact model, country, carrier, and current build. General instructions cannot establish the release status of an unspecified phone.
Do not compare only the calendar date on another owner’s phone or a social-media post. A release announcement may describe an initial rollout while your particular channel is still waiting for testing or certification. The useful comparison is the model variant, market, carrier, and build, not just the marketing name of the phone.

What to do if the download or installation does not complete
The update is offered but Wi‑Fi is unavailable
Wait for a reliable Wi‑Fi connection when possible. Motorola indicates that some security updates may use mobile data when Wi‑Fi is unavailable, but that can create carrier charges. If you choose mobile data, confirm that your plan can absorb the download and keep the phone powered until it finishes.

Connect the charger and retry after the phone reaches a safer charge level. Google’s general preparation target is 75%; Motorola’s wording is to have enough battery to complete the update. A device-specific prompt may impose its own requirement, and that prompt takes precedence.
The phone remains on an installation screen
Do not interrupt it simply because the progress appears slow. Leave it connected to power and follow the on-screen instructions. The official material does not specify a universal completion time, because download size, model, connection, and software version vary. If the phone eventually displays an explicit error or returns to Android without installing, note the exact message and the build information before contacting Motorola support.
The phone says it is current, but you expected a release
Recheck the model, region, carrier, and current build. Staggered distribution and certification can account for the difference. Avoid factory-resetting the phone solely to force an update; the broad Motorola and Google guidance does not identify a reset as a normal update step.
The download repeatedly fails
Confirm that Wi‑Fi is stable, reconnect to the network if necessary, and make sure there is enough free storage for the package and the installation process. The official instructions do not give a universal storage figure, so follow any space warning shown by your model instead of guessing. Retry from the built-in updater after the phone is charged and backed up. If the same error returns, preserve the message, current build, model, region, and carrier details for support.

Some Motorola device guides mention a computer-based update when mobile-network updates are unavailable in a particular country. This is a conditional, model- and region-specific alternative, not a universal replacement for the Settings method. Before connecting the phone to a computer, find the current official instructions for the exact model and country and follow only that procedure. Do not substitute an update package intended for another model or region.
If your model’s official guide does not document a computer route, continue using the built-in updater or ask Motorola support for an approved method. The existence of a computer option in one device guide does not establish that every Motorola phone supports it. A generic computer, cable, or repair utility is not required for the ordinary over-the-air process.

Important limits and safety cautions
You cannot normally roll back through Settings
Motorola Support US states: “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Treat the installation as a one-way change unless Motorola provides a model-specific recovery procedure. Confirm that you have the correct device and region before accepting the update, and keep your backup for recovery of personal data rather than expecting it to restore an older Android build.
An update is not the same as a data wipe
The guidance reviewed does not claim that a normal Android update routinely wipes user data. Backing up is still prudent because app coverage varies and unexpected interruptions can occur. Check backup details instead of assuming every app’s settings, saved files, or sign-in state will be restored automatically.
Do not confuse separate version fields
An Android version, Android security-update level, Google Play system update, and build number are related but distinct fields. A phone can show a newer value in one field while another remains unchanged. Use the field named in the release information or support response when deciding whether a particular update installed.
Keep support information together
If you need help, capture the exact error text and note whether the failure happened during checking, downloading, or installing. Include the model designation, country, carrier or sales channel, Android version, security-update date, and build number. This is more useful than reporting only that “the update is missing,” because Motorola’s availability depends on those identifying details.

Why does my Motorola say it is up to date when another phone has the update?
