To install an add-on in a world you already created, first import its .mcpack or .mcaddon file by opening it with Minecraft. Importing only makes the pack available; it does not turn it on. In Play, select the pencil icon beside the existing world, open Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs under Add-Ons, and choose Activate for every pack the add-on requires. Then select Play to enter the world.
Back up an important world before making the change. If the add-on is for a Realm, activate the packs in the selected Realm world slot and wait for Minecraft to upload the edited slot before playing. The procedure below applies to Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, including worlds that were created before you obtained the add-on.

What you need before installing
Have the add-on file, the Bedrock Edition installation that should import it, and access to the world you want to change. Bedrock add-ons are distributed as packages rather than as a separate executable.
.mcpack: a packaged resource pack or behavior pack that transfers Bedrock content between users. Depending on the download, it may contain visual resources, gameplay behavior, or one component of a larger add-on..mcaddon: a package that can contain add-on content. Opening it starts Minecraft’s import flow and can make more than one component available.
Read the add-on’s own installation notes before activating anything. Some add-ons supply both a resource pack and a behavior pack; others need only one. Activating just one part can leave missing textures, unchanged gameplay, or an add-on that appears to be installed but does not work.

Make a backup first
Use the world’s available manual or automatic backup option before changing a valuable save. Add-ons can alter blocks, entities, recipes, and other world content. Minecraft Help warns that conflicts between multiple add-ons can cause problems, and disabling an add-on can remove its mobs or replace its blocks with default blocks. A backup gives you a way to return to the pre-add-on state instead of trying to repair every change by hand.
Confirm that this is a Bedrock world
The instructions here are for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Java Edition uses a different mod and resource-pack system, so a Bedrock .mcpack or .mcaddon is not installed through Java’s world menus.
Import the add-on file into Minecraft
- Locate the downloaded
.mcpackor.mcaddonfile on the device where Bedrock is installed. - Open the file with Minecraft. This launches the game’s import process. Wait for the import notification or completion message before closing Minecraft.
- Start Minecraft and choose Play. The imported pack should now be available in the world editor’s Resource Packs or Behavior Packs area.
Import and activation are separate operations. A successful import places the pack in your available content; it does not automatically apply that pack to an existing world. You must edit the particular world and activate the appropriate component there.

If opening the file does not start Minecraft
- Check that the extension is still
.mcpackor.mcaddon, rather than a file that was renamed with an extra extension such as.zip. - Use the device’s Open with command and select Minecraft if more than one application is offered.
- Return to the download source’s instructions if the package is delivered inside another archive. The file that Minecraft imports must be the add-on package itself.
- After importing, reopen Minecraft and check the world’s Add-Ons menus. The pack may have imported even if the operating system did not show a prominent confirmation.
Activate an imported add-on in an existing world
These are the exact world-editing steps documented by Minecraft Help.
- From Minecraft’s main screen, select Play.
- Find the existing world in the list.
- Select the pencil icon beside that world. This opens its world settings without creating a new save.
- Under Add-Ons, open Resource Packs if the add-on includes a resource component.
- In Available, select the pack and choose Activate.
- Return to the Add-Ons area and open Behavior Packs if the add-on includes a behavior component.
- Again, select the required pack under Available and choose Activate.
- Review the add-on’s instructions one more time to make sure every supplied component is active, then select Play to load the world.
You can activate a resource pack without a behavior pack, a behavior pack without a resource pack, or both. The correct choice depends on what the package contains. A resource pack normally supplies presentation elements such as textures or other visual assets, while a behavior pack supplies gameplay changes; use the package documentation rather than assuming that every add-on uses the same combination.
Resource-only, behavior-only, and combined packages

Check that the add-on is working
After selecting Play, test the feature described by the add-on rather than assuming that an import message proves it is active. For example, look for the custom item, block, mob, recipe, or other content named in the package instructions. Test in a safe area of the backed-up world first.

- If the new content is visible but does not behave as described, return to the world’s pencil menu and check Behavior Packs.
- If the behavior works but textures or models look missing, check Resource Packs and activate the matching resource component.
- If neither component appears under Available, the import did not finish in the Minecraft installation that contains the world, or the package is not intended for this Bedrock installation.
Do not assume that opening a package while one world is loaded applies it globally. Pack activation is configured per world, so another existing world will remain unchanged until you edit that world and activate the pack there as well.
Installing add-ons on a Realm
A Realm uses the same pack activation controls, but the edited world must be uploaded to the Realm for other players and devices to receive the change.
- Open the Realm’s settings and select the world slot you want to edit.
- Open Resource Packs and/or Behavior Packs under Add-Ons.
- In Available, select Activate for every component required by the add-on.
- Confirm the change and return to the Realm settings.
- Wait while Minecraft uploads the changed world slot. Do not leave the process half-complete or start playing from an older copy while the upload is pending.
- Enter the Realm after the upload finishes. Other Bedrock devices connecting to that Realm download and apply the activated add-ons automatically.
The upload step is the key difference between a local world and a Realm. Activating a pack in a local save changes that save on the device; activating it in the Realm settings changes the selected slot only after Minecraft has uploaded the edited version.

Which Realm slot is changed?
Apply the packs to the slot that is currently selected for play. If you edit a different slot, the active Realm world will not change. Verify the slot before confirming, especially when a Realm contains several saved worlds.
Marketplace content versus downloaded files
Minecraft Marketplace content is acquired inside Bedrock, while an externally downloaded package is imported by opening its .mcpack or .mcaddon file. The source changes how the content enters Minecraft, not the basic principle that a pack must be enabled for the target world.

Marketplace availability and the exact purchase flow can vary by account and device. The world-editing principle remains the same: content must be associated with the world you intend to play, not merely owned or imported on the account.

Troubleshooting an add-on that does not work
The pack is missing from Available
- Close the world and verify that you opened the package with the same Bedrock installation that contains the world.
- Restart Minecraft and revisit the world’s pencil icon.
- Look in both Resource Packs and Behavior Packs; a package described as an add-on may place its components in separate tabs.
- Check the file extension and re-import the original package if necessary.
The pack is listed but cannot be activated
Return to the package instructions and identify whether it expects a resource component, a behavior component, or both. If one component was imported separately, activate each supplied component in its matching tab. Avoid deleting the backup while diagnosing the problem.

Multiple add-ons can conflict. Minecraft Help recommends disabling optional packs one at a time to identify the problematic one. Use this isolation sequence:
- Make sure the latest working copy is backed up.
- Open the world’s pencil icon and note which packs are currently active.
- Disable one optional pack, then load the world and test the feature.
- Repeat with the next optional pack until the conflict disappears.
- Leave the conflicting combination disabled, or restore the backup and rebuild the active-pack set more conservatively.
Changing one pack at a time matters because disabling several at once does not tell you which pack caused the failure.
Blocks, mobs, or items changed after disabling a pack
This can be an expected consequence rather than a failed import. Minecraft Help notes that disabling an add-on may remove its mobs and replace its blocks with default blocks. If the world no longer resembles the backed-up version, stop testing on the original save and restore a prior manual or automatic backup.
The world will not load or appears damaged
- Exit without making additional changes.
- Use the world’s restore option to select a backup from before the add-on was activated.
- After restoration, make a fresh backup and test the add-on in a disposable copy or a less valuable world before trying the main save again.
Restoring a backup is the reliable rollback path when pack conflicts or content removal have changed the world. A backup made after the problem began may preserve the damage, so choose a point that clearly predates activation.

Local world or Realm: choose the right workflow

A repeatable checklist
- Confirm the world is Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
- Back up the existing world.
- Read the add-on instructions and identify resource and behavior components.
- Open the
.mcpackor.mcaddonwith Minecraft and wait for import to finish. - Choose Play, select the world’s pencil icon, and open Add-Ons.
- Activate every required pack under the correct tab.
- For a Realm, confirm the selected slot and wait for the upload.
- Test the add-on in a safe area.
- If there is a conflict, disable optional packs one at a time.
- If the save is damaged, restore a backup from before activation.
Key distinction to remember
Importing makes an add-on available to Minecraft; activating it in the existing world’s Add-Ons settings makes that particular world use it. The pencil icon is the route to those settings, both resource and behavior components may be required, and a Realm needs an upload after activation. Keeping a pre-installation backup is the safeguard that lets you experiment without sacrificing an established world.
