To install a Yealink SIP IP phone, identify its exact model, connect it to Ethernet and a supported power source, then complete the setup required by your phone provider or administrator. Powering on the handset does not by itself register an extension or enable calls: the phone also needs a working network and valid service or provisioning details.
Before you install the phone
Check the model number printed on the handset or base, then use that model’s quick-start guide for physical connections and its current documentation for settings. Yealink’s support documentation includes administrator material for network setup, provisioning, device settings, troubleshooting, updates, and maintenance. For a business phone, ask your administrator or provider for the instructions that apply to your service.
- Confirm that the specific phone model and firmware are supported by your SIP provider, PBX, or hosted phone system.
- Obtain the extension or account details and the provider’s approved setup or provisioning process. Do not use example credentials from an unrelated guide.
- For a managed office installation, confirm that the switch port has the required network and VLAN access and that the organization’s provisioning method is available.
- Check whether the phone supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), and whether the connected switch or injector supplies it. If using an adapter, verify the exact model’s specified voltage, current, and connector in its guide.
Yealink’s initialization guidance lists a working IP network, SIP-configured VoIP gateways, compatible firmware, and an active call server configured to send and receive SIP messages among deployment prerequisites. These service-side requirements may be managed by your provider or IT team rather than at the handset.
Assemble the phone and connect Ethernet and power
- Attach the stand or wall mount as shown in the guide for your exact model.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the phone’s port labeled for network or Internet to the appropriate network outlet or switch port. Use the label in your model guide; port names and layouts vary.
- Provide power using either PoE supported by that model and the network equipment, or the model-compatible power adapter. Do not assume an adapter supplied for another Yealink model is suitable.
- If you want a computer to share the network connection through the phone, connect it to the phone’s PC passthrough port, if present. This is optional; follow the model guide’s port labels.
For one model-specific example, the SIP-T42S Quick Start Guide_V84_80 describes power through an IEEE 802.3af-compliant PoE hub or switch, or through Yealink’s original 5V/1.2A adapter. That rating applies to the cited T42S guide only; check other models’ documentation for their power requirements. The guide also shows that the phone begins initialization after network and power are connected.

Let startup finish, then complete provisioning
Wait for the phone to complete its startup process before trying to make a call. The T42S guide says that model can be configured through its phone interface or web interface after startup; that does not mean every Yealink model will be registered or ready to place calls as soon as it powers on.
In managed deployments, a phone may download configuration files from an auto-provisioning server. Yealink documents discovery methods that include zero-touch/PnP, DHCP options, and a server address saved on the phone. Which method is used depends on the device and network configuration. Ask your administrator or provider which method applies and follow their instructions for entering credentials or a provisioning URL.

If you are responsible for deployment, use documentation for the exact phone family and compatible firmware. Yealink’s provisioning guidance says: “We recommend that IP phones running the latest firmware should not be downgraded to an earlier firmware version.” This is the manufacturer’s recommendation; check with your administrator before changing firmware.

Check that the phone has network connectivity and that the expected extension or account is registered, or that the service indicator shown by your provider reports the phone online. The precise menus, registration labels, and status indicators differ by model and phone system, so consult the model guide and provider instructions rather than relying on a universal status-code list.

Troubleshoot a Yealink phone showing no service
- No power or no startup: Check that the Ethernet connection is seated and that the chosen power method is supported. For PoE, confirm the switch port or injector supplies compatible PoE; for adapter power, check the exact model’s adapter specification.
- Phone starts but has no network: Check the cable, network outlet, switch port, and any required VLAN or office network access with your administrator.
- Network works but the account is not registered: Verify that the correct provider or PBX provisioning details were used and that the account or extension is active. Ask the administrator or provider to check account configuration and service-side logs.
- Provisioning fails or setup differs from instructions: Confirm the instructions match the exact model and firmware, and ask which discovery method the network uses. The server-address mechanism may be PnP, DHCP options, or an address saved on the handset.
- Still not working: Have the provider or administrator verify that the SIP gateway and call server are active and configured to send and receive SIP messages, and that the firmware is compatible. Use the exact model’s guide for error-specific actions.
