The safest way to install a control panel for WordPress is to start with a newly provisioned Ubuntu LTS VPS, confirm that the panel supports that Ubuntu release and your CPU architecture, and then run the panel’s current installer as root. Do not install a panel over an existing Apache, Nginx, PHP, database, mail, or firewall configuration unless the panel documentation explicitly supports that migration.
After the panel is installed, create a domain, select PHP 8.3 or newer, create a MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+ database and user, point DNS to the VPS, issue HTTPS certificates, and run WordPress’s browser installer. HestiaCP, CyberPanel, aaPanel, and ISPConfig can all support this workflow, but they differ in web server, automation, resource use, and administration style.
What you need before installing
A control-panel installer changes core services and usually installs a complete hosting stack. Prepare the server before you run anything.
- A fresh Ubuntu LTS image: Reinstall or deploy a new VPS rather than reusing a server with websites or manually installed services. HestiaCP explicitly requires a fresh operating-system installation for proper functionality, and CyberPanel’s guide likewise starts with a fresh VPS or cloud server.
- A supported Ubuntu release: Match the panel’s current support list. Hestia currently lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 LTS; ISPConfig documents Ubuntu 22.04 through 26.04. aaPanel recommends Ubuntu 22.04 when you are unsure, but you should confirm its current support matrix before installation. CyberPanel support can change, so check its current installer page immediately before deployment.
- Supported CPU architecture: Confirm whether the selected panel supports AMD64/x86_64, ARM64, or your provider’s virtualization type. Do not assume that an ARM image supports every panel component.
- Root SSH access: Panel installers need to create users, install packages, alter firewall rules, and enable services. Log in as root or use an account that can obtain a root shell.
- A resolvable hostname: Set a fully qualified hostname such as
server.example.net. Create its DNS record before installation when possible, and ensure the hostname resolves to the VPS address. - Capacity for the whole stack: Published minimums are installer baselines, not performance guarantees. Mail, antivirus scanning, backups, caching, plugins, and traffic require additional CPU, memory, and storage.
- A recovery point: Take a provider snapshot or backup immediately before installation and save the snapshot identifier. Record the provider console URL, VPS address, hostname, intended domain, and an emergency SSH key.
WordPress’s current server baseline
WordPress.org’s 2026 requirements recommend PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended as the most robust and featureful web-server choice. Older PHP and database releases may still run some sites, but they are end-of-life and can leave the site exposed to known security problems.

Choose the panel by the stack and operating model you need, not simply by whether it advertises one-click WordPress.

How to decide
- Choose HestiaCP for a familiar shared-hosting style with Nginx and PHP-FPM controls.
- Choose CyberPanel when OpenLiteSpeed is a deliberate requirement and you accept its edition and support distinctions.
- Choose aaPanel when a broad visual operations dashboard matters more than a narrowly defined stack.
- Choose ISPConfig when you need explicit control over Apache/Nginx roles, services, and multi-server administration.
For any choice, verify that the panel exposes PHP 8.3 or later and MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0. A panel that installs an older default is not automatically unsuitable, but you must plan the supported upgrade before putting WordPress into production.
Prepare the Ubuntu VPS safely
- Deploy the image. Select a supported Ubuntu LTS release, the required architecture, and enough storage for the operating system, panel, WordPress files, databases, logs, and at least one local backup set.
- Connect over SSH. Use your provider’s root login or an administrative account that can become root. Confirm the address and host key before entering credentials.
- Apply vendor updates. Update the fresh image using Ubuntu’s supported package workflow, then reboot if the kernel or core services require it. Do not install a separate web server, PHP repository, database, mail server, Docker stack, or competing firewall first.
- Set the hostname. Configure a fully qualified name with your provider or Ubuntu hostname tools. Check that the name resolves forward to the VPS and, where possible, that reverse DNS is consistent. Mail delivery is especially sensitive to hostname and reverse-DNS errors.
- Check resources and architecture. Record CPU count, memory, disk space, architecture, and virtualization type. A 1-core/1-GB server may satisfy a panel’s minimum but leave little capacity for WordPress, object caching, backups, or mail.
- Snapshot the clean server. Take a provider snapshot after updates and hostname configuration. Keep it until the panel and first site have passed verification.
Run the panel’s official installer
Download the installer only from the panel vendor’s current documentation. Installation commands change as supported Ubuntu releases, PHP versions, repositories, and security defaults change. Do not paste an old command copied from a forum or video.

HestiaCP
Hestia’s documented pattern is to download its current hst-install.sh script and execute it as root. The installer exposes choices for hostname, administrator email and password, web server, PHP-FPM, database, firewall, Fail2Ban, and the panel port. Review every option before confirming; selecting mail, antivirus, or additional services increases memory and storage requirements. The normal panel endpoint is HTTPS on port 8083, unless you deliberately choose another documented port.
CyberPanel
Use the current CyberPanel installer after confirming that the VPS is fresh and that the selected Ubuntu release is supported. During setup, choose the OpenLiteSpeed path when you want the free edition, and note any separate licensing decision for Enterprise LiteSpeed. The panel can then create websites, install WordPress, manage SSL certificates, and configure email from its dashboard.
aaPanel
Follow aaPanel’s current quick-start installer and select the supported Ubuntu image recommended for your situation. Before accepting defaults, identify the web server, PHP version, database engine, and optional services that will be installed. The graphical workflow is useful only if those components meet WordPress’s current requirements.

ISPConfig
Use the current ISPConfig installation guide for the exact topology you selected. Decide whether the machine will run Apache2, Nginx, or a documented multi-server arrangement before installation. Its administration model rewards careful planning of services, roles, and permissions rather than rapid one-click deployment.
When the script finishes, save the panel URL, port, administrator name, and a password-manager entry. If installation aborts, do not repeatedly rerun it over a partially configured system; inspect the installer log and restore the clean snapshot when the documentation recommends starting over.
Complete first login and lock down the panel
- Open the documented panel hostname and port in a browser. For HestiaCP, this is normally
https://server.example.net:8083. - Replace temporary or installer-generated credentials with a unique password stored in a password manager. Create separate administrator accounts where the panel supports them instead of sharing one login.
- Restrict panel access with provider firewall rules, the panel firewall, VPN access, or an IP allowlist where your work pattern permits it. Keep SSH available through a separate, tested rule before tightening access.
- Review enabled services. Disable mail, antivirus, FTP, or other components you do not need, but use the panel’s documented controls rather than deleting packages manually.
- Enable HTTPS for the panel through its supported certificate workflow. Confirm the hostname resolves correctly before requesting the certificate.
- Check the panel’s clock, timezone, update channel, and notification settings. Incorrect time can break certificates, scheduled tasks, backups, and log interpretation.
Create the WordPress site in the panel
The labels vary, but the underlying sequence is the same across panels.

- Add the domain. Create the primary domain or subdomain as a website in the panel. Confirm the document root and whether the panel will create a separate system user.
- Select PHP. Choose PHP 8.3 or a newer supported release. Enable only the extensions your theme and plugins require, including the MySQL/MariaDB connector used by the panel’s PHP build.
- Create a database and user. Create a dedicated database and a dedicated database user with a long, unique password. Grant that user access only to this site’s database. Record the database name, username, password, and host value shown by the panel.
- Install WordPress. Use the panel’s WordPress installer if it is current and transparent about the selected version, or upload the official WordPress package into the site’s document root. Avoid installers that silently select an obsolete PHP version or shared database account.
- Create configuration when necessary. If the panel does not create it automatically, supply the database details in
wp-config.php. Keep the file owned by the site user and avoid making the entire document root world-writable. - Run the browser installer. Visit the domain over HTTPS and complete the site title, administrator account, password, and email fields. WordPress’s documented flow creates the database, uploads files, optionally creates
wp-config.php, and then runs the installation URL. - Force the canonical URL. In WordPress settings, use the final HTTPS domain consistently. If the site was initially installed over HTTP, update both WordPress URL fields and test redirects.
- Test the result. Open the homepage, log in to
/wp-admin/, save a permalink, upload a small image, install a trusted update, and check that the changes persist after a service restart.
Point DNS and issue HTTPS certificates
- Create an A record for the domain pointing to the VPS IPv4 address. Add an AAAA record only when IPv6 is configured and tested end to end.
- Set any required
wwwrecord and decide whether the site redirects to the apex domain or thewwwhostname. - Wait for DNS propagation according to the provider’s TTL. Verify from more than one network before diagnosing the panel.
- Use the panel’s certificate function after DNS resolves. Let it configure the web-server virtual host and automatic renewal.
- Test the certificate, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, mixed-content warnings, WordPress login, media uploads, and cron-triggered links.
A site that works by IP address but not by domain usually has a DNS, virtual-host, or firewall problem rather than a WordPress problem.

- File ownership: The site files should belong to the panel’s website user or the ownership model documented by the panel. Incorrect ownership commonly causes failed updates and uploads.
- Permissions: Use restrictive, panel-compatible permissions. Do not make
wp-contentor the whole document root writable by every system user to “fix” an update error. - Scheduled tasks: Confirm WordPress cron or a panel/system cron runs on schedule. High-traffic sites may benefit from a real cron job, but use the panel’s documented configuration.
- Email: If the panel hosts mail, configure SPF, DKIM, reverse DNS, and DMARC as appropriate. If it does not, configure an authenticated transactional mail service so password resets and notifications do not depend on an untrusted local mail daemon.
- Backups: Schedule database and file backups, retain multiple restore points, and copy at least one set off the VPS. A backup that remains on the same disk does not protect against disk loss or a compromised server.
- Updates: Keep Ubuntu, the panel, PHP, WordPress core, themes, and plugins current. Test major PHP or database upgrades on a clone before changing a production site.
Troubleshooting common failures
The installer refuses to run
Confirm that the operating system is fresh, you are running as root, the Ubuntu release and architecture are supported, and no previous Nginx, Apache, PHP, MySQL, MariaDB, mail, or firewall stack is active. Check the installer log for the first error, not merely the final “failed” line. If the system was partially modified, restore the clean snapshot and start again.
WordPress reports that the MySQL extension is missing
Verify the PHP version selected for this website and install or enable the matching MySQL/MariaDB extension through the panel. Restart the relevant PHP-FPM service if the panel requires it, then recheck WordPress’s Site Health screen. A database server being present does not guarantee that the selected PHP build has its connector enabled.

Uploads or automatic updates fail
Inspect ownership, permissions, available disk space, PHP upload limits, and the panel’s per-site resource limits. Correct ownership with the panel’s documented tool or the site user; avoid blanket permission changes that weaken every site on the VPS.

Check the domain’s A and AAAA records, provider firewall, panel firewall, web-server virtual host, document root, certificate status, and whether the service is listening on the expected ports. Test locally from the VPS and externally from another network to separate DNS propagation from service failure.
The site is slow or the VPS runs out of memory
Installer minimums are not production sizing. Hestia lists 1 core, 1 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk as a minimum without SpamAssassin/ClamAV, but recommends 4 cores, 4 GB RAM, and a 40 GB SSD for a fuller stack. CyberPanel lists 1,024 MB RAM and 10 GB disk as minimums. Size for concurrent PHP workers, database buffers, media, logs, backups, mail, and caching. Disable unused services, add a page/object cache, and monitor memory, swap, disk I/O, and database load before increasing limits.

- Panel administrator credentials stored securely and panel access restricted

- Correct file ownership, permissions, cron, mail delivery, and permalink behavior
- Automated off-server backups with a tested restore procedure
- Monitoring and a documented record of the panel URL, port, services, and recovery snapshot
The Bottom Line
Install the panel only on a fresh, supported Ubuntu LTS VPS, then validate the complete WordPress stack—PHP 8.3+, MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+, DNS, HTTPS, ownership, and backups—before publishing the site. The best panel is the one whose web server, automation, and administration model match how you will operate the VPS.
