Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To run a Technic modpack for friends, install the exact Forge version used by the client pack, copy its server-compatible mods and config files into a dedicated server folder, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and make the server reachable either by port forwarding or a tunneling service. Every player must launch the identical pack version. The details that usually decide whether the server works are the Minecraft/Forge match, the Java version, removal of client-only mods, and enough memory for the pack.
What you need before installing
Gather these items before creating the server:
- The exact Technic pack name, platform page or API link, Minecraft version, Forge version, and pack version.
- A computer or hosted server with a stable connection, sufficient CPU and RAM, and permission to create files and run Java.
- A dedicated, empty folder for the server. Do not install the server into the Technic Launcher’s program folder or into a folder containing another Minecraft world.
- The modpack files, including its
mods,config, and any required asset folders. - A Java installation compatible with the pack. Technic’s server instructions note that running the Forge installer requires Java: Technic’s server guide.
Make a copy of the original client pack before removing anything. That copy is your reference when you need to compare versions or restore a configuration.

Open the pack’s Technic Platform page or its documentation and record the Minecraft release and Forge build. Do not infer the version from the pack’s name. Two releases with similar names can use different Forge builds, and Forge mods are normally sensitive to both Minecraft and Forge versions.
The server and each client should use the same pack release. Updating only the server, only the client, or only one mod can produce missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, crashes during joining, or a world that will not load.

Technic’s short server guide instructs administrators to download Forge for the same version used by the client modpack and install it as a server: read the official procedure.
2. Select the Java version
Use the pack’s own documentation when it specifies Java. The mappings below are the examples given in Technic’s server guidance, not a guarantee that every mod in a release supports every later Java build.

On Windows, the Technic Launcher download page says its installer includes the Java runtime Technic needs: Technic Launcher download. That does not automatically configure the Java runtime used by a separately launched dedicated server. Verify which java executable your server script calls, especially when multiple Java versions are installed.
3. Install Forge as a dedicated server
- Create a new folder such as
Minecraft-Technic-Serveron the machine that will host the world. - Download the Forge installer matching the pack’s exact Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Run the installer with Java. Select Install server, then choose the dedicated server folder you created.
- Allow the installer to download its required libraries and create the Forge server files. If the installer reports that Java is missing, install the Java version selected in the previous section and run the installer again.
- Leave the generated files in that folder. The installer may create a Forge jar, libraries, configuration files, and a generated
run.batorrun.sh, depending on the Forge release.
The exact jar filename varies by Forge release, so do not hard-code a name copied from another tutorial. Use the file and script generated for your version. The official short guide is the authoritative reference for this installation flow: Creating a modded server.

4. Copy the pack into the server folder
A Technic pack normally contains client and server material together. Copy the server-compatible content into the Forge server directory, then remove anything that exists only to render or control a client.
- From the installed pack, copy the complete
modsfolder into the server folder. Merge files only when you are certain they belong to the same pack build. - Copy the pack’s
configfolder so that server-side mod settings match the clients. - Copy any asset or data folders required by the pack. The folder names are pack-specific; follow the pack author’s instructions rather than inventing a new layout.
- Remove client-only mods, such as those that provide only graphics, shaders, minimaps, menu changes, or other local rendering features. Remove their corresponding client-only configuration folders as well.
- Compare the resulting server
modsandconfigcontents with the client pack. Every required gameplay mod and configuration should be represented consistently on both sides.
Technic’s modpack-authoring guidance identifies bin, mods, and config as core pack folders: How to make a Minecraft modpack. A client-only mod must not be copied merely because it appears in the client archive; dedicated servers cannot load many rendering and interface components.

5. Start the server and accept the EULA
Use Forge’s generated script first
If Forge supplies run.bat or run.sh, start the server with that script. It usually sets the correct jar and library class path for the Forge release. On Linux or macOS, make the shell script executable if necessary, then run it from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.

Create a script only when Forge did not generate one
Technic’s example command is:
java -Xmx4G forge.jar noguiReplace forge.jar with the actual Forge jar name, or use the launch command supplied by your Forge installation. Replace 4G with an amount appropriate for the pack and host. -Xmx4G is an allocation example, not a universal requirement: too little memory causes stalls or crashes, while reserving more memory than the machine can provide can make the operating system swap or terminate other services.
Complete the first launch
- Run the generated script or your verified command once. The server will create files and normally stop because the EULA has not been accepted.
- Open
eula.txtin the server folder. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and confirm that you agree to Minecraft’s EULA. - Start the same script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready for connections. The first launch can take longer while Forge builds caches and generates world data.
Stop the server with its console stop command rather than closing the window while it is writing world data. This reduces the chance of a damaged world or incomplete configuration.

Players on the same home network can usually connect to the hosting computer’s local address, subject to the operating system firewall. Players outside that network need an inbound path to the server.
Port forwarding
Port forwarding maps the server’s listening port on the router to the hosting computer’s local address. Reserve a stable local address for the host if your router supports DHCP reservations, create a rule for the server port and protocol shown by the server configuration, allow the Java server through the host firewall, and restart the server after changing the network rule. Router menus and field names differ by manufacturer, so use the current documentation for your exact router model.

Forwarding exposes a service from your home connection to the internet. Give friends only the public address and configured port, keep the server software and operating system updated, and remove the rule when you no longer need outside access.
Port tunneling
A tunneling service can provide an external connection without changing the home router. Technic explicitly presents tunneling as an alternative to port forwarding for players outside your Wi-Fi: official networking guidance. Follow the tunnel service’s instructions to point its connection at the local server port, then restart the Minecraft server if the service requires it.

7. Have every player install the identical pack
- Install the Technic Launcher from the official download page: technicpack.net/download.
- In the launcher, search for the pack by name, or paste the pack’s Technic Platform API link when the pack author provides one.
- Install the exact release used by the server. Do not let the launcher update the pack to a different build unless you are intentionally updating both server and clients together.
- Launch the pack once so the client creates its files, then connect using the server address supplied by the host.
Technic says that “The Technic Launcher handles all of the heavy lifting for you.” That convenience applies to obtaining and launching the client pack; it does not remove the need for the server administrator to install Forge, choose Java, configure networking, and remove client-only mods from the dedicated server.

Self-hosting is practical when you have a reliable machine and can administer the network. A hosted server can be easier for a group that needs continuous availability or cannot configure a router. Private or custom Technic packs
If you are assembling a private pack rather than using a public one, keep the server and client archives versioned together. Technic’s authoring guidance requires a direct-download URL when distributing a custom pack: custom modpack instructions. Host the archive at a stable URL that your intended players can access, and update the pack’s version identifier whenever you change a mod, configuration, or required asset.
Document which files are client-only and which are required on the server. Give players the same archive or Technic Platform release that you used to build the server; asking them to assemble files manually makes mismatches much more likely.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Forge installer will not start
- Check that Java is installed and that the installer is being opened with the intended Java executable.
- Verify that the Forge installer matches the pack’s Minecraft release. A Java error and a version mismatch can look similar in a short console message.
- Run the installer from a folder where your account can create files, then select Install server and the dedicated server directory again.
The server stops with a missing-mod or wrong-version error
- Compare the server Forge build and Minecraft version with the client pack’s recorded values.
- Compare every gameplay mod file and version. Remove client-only mods from the server, but do not remove a gameplay dependency simply because it has no visible in-game screen.
- Restore the matching
configfiles from the same pack release instead of mixing configurations from another version.
The server exits immediately after the first launch
- Open the console output and check whether
eula.txtwas created. If so, seteula=falsetoeula=trueand start again. - Confirm that the script points to the actual Forge jar and that its Java version is compatible with the Minecraft release.
- Check available disk space and permissions in the server folder; Forge must be able to create libraries, logs, configs, and world data.
Players time out or cannot see the server
- Test locally on the host machine or home network first. A local failure is a server or firewall problem, not a port-forwarding problem.
- For remote players, verify the router forwards the configured server port to the correct host address and that the host firewall allows Java.
- If using a tunnel, confirm that its client is running, points to the same local port, and has not changed the public endpoint.
- Restart the server after changing forwarding or tunnel settings, as Technic’s guidance recommends.
The server crashes or becomes unresponsive during play
- Check the server log for the mod or event that triggered the failure before changing files.
- Review the
-Xmxvalue and the host’s actual free memory. The sample-Xmx4Gsetting is not a required baseline for every pack. - Stop the server cleanly, back up the world and configuration, then test one change at a time. Never replace the entire pack with a different release while trying to isolate a single mod problem.
Safe update and backup practice
Before changing a modpack release, copy the world folder, mods, config, and server scripts to a dated backup location. Test the new release on a separate server folder when possible. Keep the old folder intact until every player has updated and the world loads successfully.
Record the Minecraft version, Forge build, Java version, pack release, memory setting, and network method in a small text file beside the server. This turns a future reinstall into a repeatable procedure instead of a search through old downloads and chat messages.
