A smart lock is usually a straightforward replacement when your door already has a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt and the existing holes match the lock’s requirements. Before buying or drilling, identify the lock type, measure the door thickness, cross-bore, edge bore and backset, and compare every measurement with the exact model’s current installation guide. If the door uses a mortise, multipoint, glass-door or narrow-stile preparation, stop and obtain model-specific advice before altering it.

Start by identifying the deadbolt format

Most retrofit smart deadbolts described in current manufacturer instructions are designed to replace a single-cylinder deadbolt. That format has a keyed cylinder on the outside of the door and a thumbturn on the inside. Aqara describes its U100 as a replacement for this arrangement, and SimpliSafe states that its cited Smart Lock works only with a single-cylinder deadbolt. Those statements apply to the named products, not to every smart lock.

Stand on the secure side of the door and inspect the existing lock before ordering anything. Record what you see rather than relying on a product photograph:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Outside: a key cylinder should be present.
  • Inside: a manually operated thumbturn should be present, not a second key cylinder.
  • Edge: the deadbolt should slide through a separate bore in the door edge.
  • Frame: the bolt should enter a strike plate mounted in the jamb.

A double-cylinder deadbolt, mortise lock, multipoint mechanism, rim lock, narrow-stile door, or glass-door lock has a different preparation. The cited installation material does not establish general compatibility for those formats. Treat them as unresolved until the chosen manufacturer confirms a suitable model or a qualified locksmith examines the door.

Measure the door before choosing a model

Use a tape measure or calipers and write down the actual values. Measure the door with the existing hardware in place when possible, then verify the dimensions against the selected lock’s template. A measurement accepted by one manufacturer is not a universal smart-lock standard.

Door thickness

Measure the slab itself, excluding the faceplate, weather strip or decorative trim. Measure at the deadbolt location if the door has layers or a raised panel. A product may support a specific thickness range while a neighboring model does not.

Cross-bore diameter

The cross-bore is the large circular hole passing through the door face for the lock body. Measure the hole’s diameter from the edge of the opening, not the diameter of the trim. If the opening is partly hidden by a mounting plate, remove the interior escutcheon only when the existing lock can be safely reassembled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edge-bore diameter

The edge bore is the smaller hole through the door edge that houses the bolt. Measure its diameter and check that the centerline aligns with the cross-bore. A replacement bolt may require a different edge-bore size or a specific faceplate shape.

Backset

Backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the cross-bore. Measure to the center of the hole, not to its near edge. Home Depot’s general guide describes 2-3/8 inches and 2-3/4 inches as common backsets, equivalent to approximately 60 mm and 70 mm. “Common” does not mean that every smart lock accepts both values; use the exact model’s documentation.

Compare your measurements with published requirements

The following examples show why a model-by-model check matters. They are product requirements, not universal standards or population statistics.

SimpliSafe Smart Lock guide Single-cylinder deadbolt Model-specific Model-specific An unobstructed borehole is required Model-specific An unobstructed strike plate and borehole are listed as prerequisites.

When a value is not stated in a general guide, do not infer it from another product. Download or open the current manual for the exact model, find its compatibility chart, and compare your recorded measurements one by one. If even one required dimension falls outside the stated range, ask the manufacturer whether an approved adapter exists; do not assume that filing metal or enlarging a hole will solve the problem.

Inspect the frame, strike and surrounding trim

A lock can fit the door and still fail because the bolt cannot enter the frame cleanly. With the door closed, look through the strike opening and check that the bolt path is clear of wood, screws and weather seals. The strike plate should be firmly attached and aligned with the bolt. SimpliSafe specifically lists an unobstructed strike plate and borehole among its prerequisites.

Check the interior and exterior clearance around the deadbolt. Nearby levers, pull handles, security bars, storm-door hardware, window trim or a deep door stop can collide with the smart-lock housing. Place the selected manufacturer’s paper template over the existing preparation and trace the outline before removing anything. A template reveals interference that a dimension chart cannot.

Also check the door swing and handing. The lock body must sit flat against the door and the thumbturn or interior mechanism must rotate without touching the frame. Do not assume that a lock advertised for “standard doors” will clear an unusually narrow stile or decorative molding.

Decide whether your door is a safe do-it-yourself installation

A self-installation is reasonable when all of these conditions are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The existing lock is the single-cylinder format required by the selected model.
  • Your door, cross-bore, edge bore and backset fall within that model’s published ranges.
  • The strike and bolt path are unobstructed and aligned.
  • The supplied template shows adequate clearance for the interior and exterior assemblies.
  • You can follow the model’s instructions without drilling, chiseling or improvising hardware.

Pause and obtain model-specific guidance before proceeding if the door is metal, unusually thick or thin, reinforced, fire-rated, part of a multipoint system, or prepared for a mortise lock. The cited material does not establish a general retrofit method for those doors. A locksmith can inspect the preparation without committing you to irreversible drilling.

Prepare the work area and hardware

Read the complete installation guide before taking the old lock apart. Put the new parts on a clean surface and identify the exterior assembly, interior mounting plate, bolt, strike, screws, spacers, cable and any adapter pieces. Compare the contents with the manual’s parts diagram; a missing screw or spacer can change the alignment.

Use the tools named by the selected manufacturer. Aqara lists a PH1 screwdriver for U100 installation. Other models may call for a different driver, drill bit or wrench, so do not substitute a bit that damages the screw heads. Keep the old lock and its screws until the new lock has passed all tests.

If the manufacturer’s template shows that a new or enlarged hole is allowed, a door-lock installation kit or boring guide may help. Home Depot presents such equipment as a conditional modification path, not as a standard requirement. Never drill based solely on a generic kit’s measurements; use the selected lock’s template, protect both faces of the door against tear-out and confirm that the resulting hole will not weaken the door.

Install the lock in the order shown by its manual

The sequence below reflects the mechanical order described for TP-Link’s Tapo DL100/DLW10 V1 instructions while keeping the model-specific details visible. Other products can use different brackets or retain the existing bolt, so follow the exact guide supplied with your lock.

  1. Confirm compatibility one last time. Recheck the lock format, your written measurements, the template and the clearance around the frame. TP-Link’s instructions begin with this check; do not skip it because the old lock is already removed.
  2. Photograph the existing installation. Take pictures of the exterior, interior, edge bore and strike. They provide a reference for orientation and screw locations if you need to restore the old lock.
  3. Remove the interior hardware. Support the exterior cylinder while removing the interior screws so the assembly does not fall or pull the cable. Set each part aside in order.
  4. Remove the existing bolt. Open the door, remove the edge screws and slide out the bolt. Do not force it through a misaligned bore; inspect for paint, debris or a bent faceplate.
  5. Set the replacement bolt for the measured backset. The cited Tapo models support 60 mm and 70 mm positions, and the bolt position differs between them. Select the position shown in the Tapo instructions for your measurement, then confirm that the bolt face is oriented correctly for the door edge.
  6. Insert and fasten the bolt. Slide it into the edge bore with the bevel and actuator orientation shown in the manual. Tighten the specified screws firmly but do not overtighten into soft wood. Operate the bolt by hand while the door is open; it should extend and retract smoothly.
  7. Route the exterior assembly or cable. Pass the spindle, tailpiece or connector through the cross-bore exactly as illustrated. Keep any cable flat and free of the bolt’s moving parts. Do not twist a connector to make it reach.
  8. Install the interior mounting plate. Hold the exterior assembly in position while fastening the plate with the supplied screws. Tighten in stages so the plate remains square with the door. A plate that is pulled sideways can make an otherwise compatible bolt bind.
  9. Attach the interior lock components. Connect the cable and fit the interior mechanism, thumbturn adapter or cover in the orientation specified by the model. Confirm that the manual thumbturn can rotate through its full travel before closing the cover.
  10. Install or verify the strike. Use the supplied strike and screws when the manual calls for them. With the door open, extend the bolt and check that it reaches the end of its travel without scraping the strike.
  11. Complete the electronic setup only after the mechanics work. Fit batteries or connect power exactly as the product instructions specify, then use the model’s setup and calibration procedure. Do not attempt app pairing or calibration to compensate for a bolt that binds mechanically.

Keep the door open during the first powered test. If the lock drives the bolt while the door is closed and the strike is misaligned, the motor can stall or the door can become difficult to open. The exact calibration prompts, battery type and connectivity steps are model-specific and must come from the current manual.

Test the finished installation before relying on it

There is no single brand-independent commissioning checklist in the cited material, but these checks are prudent after any installation:

  • With the door open, turn the interior thumbturn from fully retracted to fully extended and back. Movement should be smooth and complete.
  • Close the door gently and operate the lock manually. The bolt should enter the strike without lifting, pushing or pulling the door.
  • Run the electronic lock and unlock commands with the door still open, then repeat them with the door closed while standing inside.
  • Check that the exterior key cylinder, if retained by the design, still works as described by the manual.
  • Inspect every screw and the strike after several cycles. A loose plate or shifting strike is an alignment problem, not a software problem.
  • Confirm that you can unlock from inside using the required mechanical method if batteries are depleted or the electronic system is unavailable.

Do not hand the door to occupants until you have a reliable way to open it from inside and outside. Keep the physical key, emergency power method or other recovery method described by the product documentation available.

Troubleshoot by symptom, not by guesswork

The bolt will not enter the strike

Open the door and extend the bolt. If it moves freely when open, the problem is frame alignment. Look for a strike opening that is too high, too low or too shallow, and check that the door is not being pushed sideways by weather stripping. Repositioning the strike is a modification; make it only when the lock’s instructions permit it and when you can preserve the required screw engagement. If the bolt still binds with the door open, revisit the backset setting, bolt orientation and mounting-plate alignment.

The motor stalls or makes repeated attempts

Do not keep cycling the motor. Remove power only as directed by the manual, open the door and test the bolt by hand. A stiff bolt, over-tightened mounting screws, a twisted cable or a strike obstruction can all create resistance. Correct the mechanical cause before replacing batteries or repeating calibration.

The interior thumbturn is hard to rotate

Loosen the mounting screws slightly and test whether the mechanism becomes free. If it does, the plate or exterior assembly was pulled out of square. Retighten evenly while keeping the parts level. If the thumbturn remains stiff with the hardware loose, remove the interior component and compare its orientation with the model diagram.

The cross-bore or edge bore is the wrong size

Stop before enlarging the hole. Compare the measurement with the exact model’s chart and template. Aqara notes that modifications may be necessary for dimensions outside its stated U100 requirements, but that is not permission to modify every door or every lock. Ask the manufacturer whether an approved change is possible; otherwise choose a compatible model or have a locksmith assess the door.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The door has a mortise or multipoint mechanism

Do not remove the mechanism simply because a smart deadbolt looks similar. The cited guides do not establish compatibility for mortise or multipoint locks. Photograph the preparation, identify the lock manufacturer if possible, and obtain written model-specific guidance or professional assessment before drilling or replacing parts.

The lock works open but not when the door is closed

This nearly always points to alignment or clearance. Inspect the strike, hinge sag, weather seal and frame pressure. Use the supplied template to verify that the bolt and interior housing remain centered when the door is fully latched. A software reset will not correct a physical obstruction.

Compare compatible models on the dimensions that affect installation

If two or more locks pass the compatibility check, compare installation consequences before comparing features. A lock with a longer list of electronic functions is not a good choice if its physical requirements do not match your door.

Comparison question Why it matters What to verify in current documentation
What existing lock does it replace? A single-cylinder replacement cannot be assumed to fit a double-cylinder, mortise or multipoint preparation. Supported lock format and whether the product replaces the full deadbolt or attaches to an existing mechanism.
Which measurements are accepted? Backset, thickness and bore limits determine whether the hardware can sit squarely and reach the strike. Door thickness, cross-bore, edge-bore and backset ranges, plus the manufacturer’s template.
Are modifications allowed? Drilling or enlarging a hole is irreversible and can weaken a door or void a fit assumption. Approved adapters, permitted hole changes and any stated restrictions on door material.
What hardware is included? A missing strike, spacer or adapter can stop an otherwise compatible installation. Parts list, screw sizes, bolt options and whether the existing strike may be retained.
How much clearance is required? Nearby handles and trim can block the interior or exterior housing. Template outline, minimum clearance and door-edge or frame restrictions.
What setup procedure is required? Electronic calibration cannot compensate for a mechanically misaligned bolt. Battery installation, calibration, recovery method and the manual’s test sequence.
Which features and ecosystem are supported? Connectivity and platform requirements can affect daily use after the hardware fits. Current manufacturer product page and manual for the exact regional model.

Feature claims change more often than physical dimensions. Verify current regional documentation rather than relying on an old listing, a different hardware revision or a review of another model in the same product family.

Use this final compatibility checklist

  1. Identify a single-cylinder deadbolt: keyed outside, thumbturn inside.
  2. Record door thickness, cross-bore diameter, edge-bore diameter and backset.
  3. Compare every value with the exact lock’s current chart and template.
  4. Inspect the strike, frame and bolt path for obstructions.
  5. Check clearance around handles, trim, storm-door hardware and the door edge.
  6. Confirm that the parts list and required tools are available.
  7. Follow the model-specific removal, bolt-orientation and mounting sequence.
  8. Keep the door open during the first powered cycles.
  9. Test manual and electronic operation with the door open and closed.
  10. Stop and seek manufacturer or locksmith guidance if any dimension, lock format or modification remains uncertain.

The safest installation is the one that begins with a measured, documented match. When the existing deadbolt, holes and frame meet the chosen model’s published requirements, installation is mainly a careful hardware replacement. When they do not, forcing a fit can leave you with a lock that binds, a damaged door or no dependable way to enter. Resolve compatibility first, then install and test the exact model according to its own instructions.
