Yes—you can run a second WordPress blog from one hosting account. The safest choice for most independent blogs is a separate WordPress installation in its own directory, with its own database. Choose WordPress Multisite when you deliberately want one shared WordPress core, centralized administration, and sites managed as a network.
Before uploading files, decide whether the new blog will use a subdirectory such as example.com/blog2 or a subdomain such as blog2.example.com. That choice affects DNS, TLS certificates, rewrite rules, permalinks, and—if you use Multisite—the network configuration.

There are two valid ways to add another WordPress blog to an existing site. They solve different operational problems, so make the architecture decision before creating directories or changing the current installation.
Standalone installation: maximum separation
A standalone blog is a second copy of WordPress installed in a separate directory. It can have its own database, wp-config.php, themes, plugins, update schedule, administrators, and recovery process. The directory might be /blog2, or it might be the document root mapped to a subdomain.

Use this model when the blogs need different plugin or theme sets, different release timing, separate owners, or independent restore points. A separate database is preferable. If your host requires both installations to use one database, the second installation must use a unique table prefix, such as wp2_, rather than the first site’s prefix. WordPress requires each installation to have its own configuration; a shared database is safe only when the table prefixes are distinct.
WordPress Multisite: one network, shared core
Multisite converts the existing installation into a network. Additional sites are created from Network Admin instead of uploading another complete WordPress core. WordPress defines it as “A multisite network is a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files.” Network sites keep separate content tables and upload locations, while the core files and much of the administration are shared.
Choose Multisite when one administrator should manage several related sites, updates should be coordinated, and every required plugin supports network use. A plugin that works on a standalone site may have different activation or configuration requirements in a network, so check compatibility before converting.

Check hosting and domain prerequisites
Confirm these items before touching the live site:
- Your hosting plan permits a second document directory or virtual host.
- You can create another database and database user, or you have permission to use a unique table prefix in a shared database.
- The host’s current PHP and MySQL versions meet the WordPress requirements for the version you intend to install.
- You can create DNS records and point a subdomain to the correct server if you choose a subdomain.
- Your TLS certificate covers the hostname you will publish. A certificate for
example.comdoes not automatically prove coverage for every subdomain unless the certificate includes it. - You know which web server is running. Apache and IIS rules can be generated by WordPress during network setup; WordPress documentation notes that it cannot generate Nginx configuration, so an Nginx administrator must write or adapt those rules.
- Your backup system can capture files, databases, configuration files, and—if applicable—network data.
Choose a subdirectory or subdomain
Subdirectory URL
A subdirectory places the second blog below the existing domain, for example https://example.com/blog2. It is convenient when both blogs are part of one domain and your server already routes that document root correctly. In a Multisite network, a path-based network uses this style.
Check for path conflicts before choosing it. A subdirectory network may require a modified permalink structure, and existing pages or links can conflict with the new site’s paths. Changing an established network between subdirectories and subdomains later is an advanced operation involving database, configuration, and web-server changes.
Subdomain URL
A subdomain gives the second blog its own hostname, such as https://blog2.example.com. You must create the DNS record, route the hostname to the correct document root or network, and ensure TLS coverage. In a Multisite domain-based network, each subdomain also needs working DNS and server routing.

URL decision checklist
- Choose a subdirectory when the blog should clearly live under the existing domain and no existing permalink conflicts are present.
- Choose a subdomain when separate hostname routing or a stronger distinction between the blogs is more important than simpler DNS.
- For either choice, test HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, canonical URLs, media URLs, and login URLs before launch.
Back up the existing site before installation
Do not create a Multisite network or alter the current site’s configuration without a tested backup. WordPress warns that network creation updates the existing installation and recommends backing up configuration files first.
- Put the current site into a maintenance window if your host requires one for database or file operations.
- Copy the complete existing WordPress files, including
wp-config.phpand.htaccesswhen present. - Export the existing database and record the database name, user, host, and table prefix.
- Verify that the backup can be downloaded and that you know how to restore both files and database.
- Record current permalink settings, active plugins, theme details, scheduled tasks, email settings, cache settings, and DNS records. These notes provide a baseline if a rewrite or network change causes an unexpected result.
Install the second blog as a standalone WordPress site
Use this sequence when you want independent files and administration.
1. Create the destination
Create a new directory such as /blog2, or configure the subdomain’s document root to point to a dedicated directory. Do not place the second site’s files inside the first installation’s existing WordPress directory.
2. Prepare the URL and routing
For a subdirectory, confirm that requests to https://example.com/blog2 reach the new directory. For a subdomain, create the DNS record, configure the host or virtual host, and install a certificate that covers the hostname. Resolve routing before running the installer so WordPress records the intended site URL.
3. Create a database
Create a database and database user for the new blog whenever the host allows it. Grant the user the permissions required by WordPress and note the exact database name, username, password, and host value.
4. Upload WordPress
Upload and extract the WordPress package into the new directory. Keep the first site’s files untouched. The two installations may use the same PHP runtime, but each must have its own configuration.
5. Configure wp-config.php
Copy the sample configuration to wp-config.php and set DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST for the new database. If you must share the first site’s database, set a unique $table_prefix for this installation, such as wp2_. Never reuse the first site’s prefix.

6. Run the installer
Open the new blog’s final URL in a browser and complete the WordPress installer. Enter the new site title, administrator account, password, and email address. The installer should create tables using the configured prefix and write the site’s URL into its options.
7. Configure the blog
Sign in at the new site’s /wp-admin. Set the permalink structure, timezone, discussion settings, media options, user roles, theme, and plugins. Treat this as a separate site: updates, security settings, and content workflows do not automatically follow the original blog.
8. Protect the installation
Use strong, unique administrator credentials, limit administrator accounts, keep WordPress and extensions updated, and ensure the new database and configuration file are not publicly downloadable. Add the new files and database to your backup schedule before publishing content.
Convert the existing site to WordPress Multisite
Use this path only when the shared-core model fits both blogs. Conversion changes the existing installation, so perform it during a maintenance window and keep the backup described above.
1. Review compatibility and URL constraints
List every active plugin and theme and verify that the ones needed by the second site support network use. Check whether the existing site already uses paths that would collide with a subdirectory network. If the current site has important links under the intended path, resolve those conflicts before conversion.
2. Enable the network feature
In the existing WordPress installation, enable the network feature as directed by the Network Setup screen. WordPress will present the network type and configuration steps based on the installation’s current state.
3. Select the network URL model
Choose subdirectory sites such as example.com/subsite or subdomain sites such as subsite.example.com. Subdomain networks require DNS and server routing for each hostname. A network that is already established should not be switched casually between the two models; doing so requires coordinated database, configuration, and web-server changes.

4. Apply the generated configuration
Follow the Network Setup screen exactly. Add the generated constants and settings to wp-config.php, then apply the rewrite directives to .htaccess when using Apache or the equivalent IIS configuration when applicable. If the server is Nginx, adapt the rewrite configuration manually because WordPress cannot generate Nginx configuration.
5. Sign in to Network Admin
After the configuration is saved, sign in again and open Network Admin. The network dashboard is where you create sites, manage network-available themes and plugins, and control network-level settings.
6. Create the second site
In Network Admin, add a new site and enter its address, title, and administrator email. WordPress creates the site’s content tables and upload location while using the existing core files. Open the new site’s dashboard and configure its theme, plugins, users, permalinks, and content.
7. Validate the original site
Before announcing the new blog, test the original site’s home page, posts, media, login, permalinks, forms, scheduled tasks, and administrative screens. Network conversion can expose rewrite or plugin assumptions that were invisible on a single site.
Migrate a second blog that already exists elsewhere
If the blog you want to add already has content, create the destination architecture first, then migrate into it rather than trying to merge live databases blindly.

- Export the source site’s content as a WordPress WXR file using its export tool.
- Create the destination standalone site or Multisite site and confirm that its URL and HTTPS configuration work.
- Import the WXR file into the destination site, selecting the option to download or attach media when available.
- Install compatible themes and plugins on the destination. In a network, verify each extension in network context before activating it for the site.
- Review authors, categories, tags, menus, widgets, featured images, internal links, and redirects. Imported content can reference the old domain or old upload paths.
- Compare representative posts, pages, media files, and forms with the source before changing DNS or publishing the new address.
Test both blogs before launch
Use a written checklist and test from a private browser window as well as an administrator session.
- Front-end URLs: Open the home page, a post, a page, category and tag archives, and a 404 page on both blogs.
- Administration: Confirm that each intended administrator reaches the correct
/wp-adminand cannot accidentally edit the other standalone site. - Media: Upload an image, insert it into a post, view its attachment URL, and verify that permissions and paths are correct.
- Permalinks: Save the permalink settings and test old and new links. A rewrite failure commonly appears as a 404 on every post while the home page still loads.
- HTTPS: Check certificate coverage, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, mixed-content warnings, login redirects, and canonical URLs.
- Email: Test password resets, contact forms, comment notifications, and administrator notifications for each site.
- Caching: Purge page and object caches, then verify that one site’s cached pages are not served under the other site’s URL.
- Backups: Run a backup of the new site or network and confirm that the resulting files and database can be located and restored.
- Plugins and themes: Test activation, updates, front-end output, scheduled jobs, and editor behavior. For Multisite, test both network-level and per-site activation paths.
- DNS propagation: For a subdomain, verify the hostname from more than one network before treating the launch as complete.
Troubleshoot common failures
The new URL shows the old site
The hostname or directory is still mapped to the original document root, or a cache is serving an old response. Check the virtual host or directory mapping, purge caches, and confirm the new site’s configured URL.

Every post returns a 404 but the home page works
Rewrite rules are missing or point to the wrong directory. Re-save permalinks in the affected site, inspect .htaccess on Apache, and adapt the server configuration on Nginx. For a Multisite network, apply the directives shown by Network Setup.
A subdomain does not resolve
Check the DNS record, the server’s hostname routing, and certificate coverage. DNS alone is insufficient if the web server does not send the hostname to the network or standalone directory.

This usually means both installations used the same database and table prefix. Stop making changes, restore the pre-install backup if necessary, and rebuild the second installation with its own database or a demonstrably unique $table_prefix.
A plugin works alone but fails in Multisite
Network activation and shared files can change how an extension stores settings or handles uploads. Deactivate it at the network or site level, check its documented Multisite support, and test a compatible version before re-enabling it.
The original site breaks after network conversion
Restore the backup if the outage is severe, then review the generated wp-config.php constants, rewrite rules, permalink conflicts, and plugins that assume a single-site installation. Do not attempt a subdomain/subdirectory switch as a quick fix; that migration requires coordinated database and server changes.
Operate the two-blog setup after launch
Standalone sites
Schedule updates, backups, security reviews, and administrator audits for each site. Keep a record of which database and directory belong to which hostname. This separation makes a single-site restore simpler, but it also means an update or backup task can be forgotten on one blog.

Use Network Admin for network-wide themes, plugins, users, and sites, then use each site’s dashboard for content and site-specific settings. Test updates against every site because a shared core or network-activated extension can affect all of them. Include the network configuration, all site databases, uploads, and core files in one documented recovery plan.
Adding more sites later
For a standalone architecture, repeat the directory, database, configuration, and testing process for each blog. For Multisite, create another site in Network Admin, then repeat DNS and server routing work if the network uses subdomains. Keep the same backup and compatibility checks for every addition.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose a standalone installation if the second blog needs an independent database, plugins, themes, update schedule, administrators, or restore process.
- Choose Multisite if centralized administration and shared core files outweigh the dependency between sites, and all required extensions support network operation.
- Choose a subdirectory when the new blog naturally belongs under the existing domain and its path will not conflict with current links.
- Choose a subdomain when the blog needs a distinct hostname and you can manage DNS, server routing, and TLS coverage.
Whichever design you select, back up before changes, give every standalone installation its own configuration and database boundary, and test rewrites, uploads, administration, email, caching, and restoration before publishing the second blog.
