On your Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Software update (or System updates), tap Download and install or the available update-check option, and follow the prompts. After the device restarts, verify the result in Software update > Last update, then confirm the installed build under About phone/tablet > Software information. On supported software, Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update provides a separate security-status check. Labels and release timing vary by model, software version, carrier and region.
Before you start
A security update can download several components, restart the device and temporarily make the phone unavailable. A few minutes of preparation reduces the chance of an interrupted installation.
Use a reliable connection
Connect to Wi-Fi when practical. It avoids using mobile data for a large download, and some carriers require Wi-Fi for both checking and installing updates. Samsung US Support states: “Some carriers may require your device to be connected to Wi-Fi to check for and install updates.” If Wi-Fi is unavailable, follow the connection requirement shown on your own device rather than assuming mobile data will work.

Keep the phone connected to a charger if the on-screen instructions recommend it, and make sure there is enough free storage for the download and installation. Samsung’s battery guidance differs by region: a Samsung Singapore page advises at least 20%, while Samsung Canada advises at least 50%. Treat those as regional instructions, not a universal Galaxy threshold. The requirement displayed for your model and market takes priority.

Back up important information
An update is designed to preserve your data, but Samsung’s instructions still recommend backing up important information before you begin. Use the backup method already available on your phone or your normal computer backup. Do not erase data or reset the device merely because an update is pending.
Plan for a short outage
The installation may restart the device and temporarily prevent calls and other phone functions. Start when you do not need the phone for an urgent call, navigation or two-factor authentication. Never power off the device or remove its cable while an installation screen says the update is in progress.
Install the update on the Galaxy device
The on-device route is the normal way to check for and install a Galaxy security update. The exact wording can differ between One UI versions, models and carriers.

1. Open the update screen
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. Some devices use System updates instead.
- Choose Download and install, Check for updates, or the similarly named control supplied by your carrier.
If the menu is not immediately visible, use the Settings search field for “software update” or “system update.” Search results can take you to the same control, but the menu name remains dependent on the device’s software.
2. Let the phone check Samsung’s release for your device
The check is model- and market-specific. The device contacts the update service and compares what is available for that exact configuration. A patch released elsewhere, or for an unlocked model rather than a carrier model, may not appear at the same time.

If an update is available, the screen normally identifies it and presents a download or installation action. Read the size, battery and Wi-Fi notices shown on your phone. Those notices are more relevant than a generic instruction because they reflect your model and carrier.
3. Download and start installation
- Tap the available download or install control.
- Accept any confirmation or permission prompt.
- Keep the device connected to the recommended network and power source while the package downloads.
- When prompted, tap the control that begins installation or restart.
The device can become unavailable during this stage, including for calls. Do not interrupt it because the progress screen appears slow, and do not disconnect a cable if the phone is receiving the update through a computer-assisted process.

A restart is a normal part of completing an update. The phone may show a progress indicator, a Samsung logo or a message about optimizing software before the lock screen returns. Wait until the normal lock screen or home screen is available. If the phone asks for your PIN or password after restarting, enter it; biometric unlocking may not be offered immediately after a reboot.
Verify that the update installed successfully
Do not rely only on the fact that the phone restarted. Use the update history and software-information screens to verify what was actually installed.
Check “Last update”
- Open Settings.
- Return to Software update.
- Tap Last update, if that entry is present.
Samsung documents this screen as a place to see the date and summary of the last successful update. A recent date and a summary corresponding to the installation indicate that the update completed. The entry may not be available on every model or software version, so its absence alone does not prove that installation failed.

Inspect software information
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (or About tablet).
- Open Software information.
Read the Android version and build information shown there. These fields identify the software currently installed on the device. Record them if you need to contact Samsung or your carrier; support can use the exact model and build rather than a general product name.

Check the security-update status where supported
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy.
- Choose Updates.
- Open Security update.
On supported menus, this screen reports the device’s security-update status. It is a separate status view from the Android-version and build fields in Software information. If your Galaxy uses different labels or does not show this path, use the security information that is available under Software information and the Software update history.
What each verification screen tells you

These screens answer different questions. Last update is an event history, Software information identifies the installed software, and the Security update page is a status check. Looking at all available screens gives a more reliable verification than treating one label as proof of everything.
If no update is offered
A “no update available” message does not prove that installation failed, nor does it prove that your device has the newest patch released anywhere in the world. Samsung says rollout timing depends on location and carrier, and an older device may not support the latest Android version.
Check the device and market details
- Confirm the exact model in About phone/tablet, not just the Galaxy family name.
- Consider whether the device is carrier-branded, unlocked or using a different regional software configuration.
- Compare the displayed security information with Samsung’s model-specific security-update information for your market.
- Check again later if Samsung or the carrier has announced a staged release, because availability can arrive at different times by location.
Do not infer a monthly schedule, a guaranteed patch date or an end-of-support date from these general instructions. Those details require the exact model, region and carrier.

When to contact support
Contact the carrier or Samsung support when the expected update is unclear for your exact model and market, when the device repeatedly reports an installation error, or when the version and security status do not match the update you were told to expect. Provide the model, Android version, build information and any error wording. That information is more useful than saying only that the phone is “not updated.”
Install through Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac
Samsung also documents a computer route for cases in which the on-device path is unavailable or you prefer to use a computer. This requires a compatible Windows PC or Mac and the USB cable supplied with the device.
How the computer route differs

General Smart Switch procedure
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy device with the supplied USB cable.
- Allow the computer and phone to recognize each other and follow any on-screen connection prompt.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, choose the update option and read the instructions before proceeding.
- Keep the cable connected until the process finishes and the device returns to normal operation.
- After the restart, verify the result on the Galaxy using Last update, Software information and the supported Security update screen.
Samsung does not establish that Smart Switch is universally better than updating on the phone. Its practical advantage is access to a computer when the on-device route cannot be used; its requirements are the compatible computer, software and cable.

The update check cannot connect
Move to a reliable Wi-Fi network and retry from Settings > Software update. Some carriers require Wi-Fi, and a weak or captive-portal network can prevent a check. If the phone still cannot check, note the exact message and contact the carrier or Samsung for that model and market.
The download will not start
Check that the phone has adequate battery, free storage and a stable connection. Close activities that consume the connection, reconnect to Wi-Fi and run the check again. Do not delete personal files blindly; first identify what storage the Settings screen reports as available. If the device gives a carrier-specific instruction, follow that instruction.

The phone restarts but the update is not visible
Wait until the normal lock screen appears, then open Software update > Last update if available. Check About phone/tablet > Software information for the build and Android version, and use the supported Security update path. A missing Last update menu is a layout difference, not by itself evidence of failure.
The installation seems frozen
Do not force a shutdown while the installation screen is active. Samsung’s instructions describe a temporary period in which the device is unavailable, so allow that process to complete. If the phone does not return to normal operation after the on-screen process has clearly ended, record what is displayed and seek Samsung or carrier support rather than repeatedly interrupting it.
The expected patch is still absent
Recheck the exact model, carrier and location. Release stages vary, and older devices can be unable to move to the latest Android version. Use Samsung’s model-specific security information and ask the carrier or Samsung to clarify eligibility. Avoid installing an update package intended for a different model or region.

Understand security updates, Android versions and builds
A security update and an Android-version upgrade are related but not identical descriptions. The security-status screen addresses the device’s security update, while Software information lists the Android version and build currently installed. A phone can therefore show a particular Android version while receiving a security change that does not replace the entire Android release.
When documenting your result, capture all of the following that your menus provide:
- The date and summary in Last update.
- The Android version in Software information.
- The build information in Software information.
- The status shown under Security and privacy > Updates > Security update, when that path exists.
This record lets support distinguish an update that has not rolled out from one that downloaded but did not complete. It also avoids the common mistake of treating the Android version alone as the security-patch date.
A repeatable verification checklist
Use this short sequence whenever you need to document a Galaxy update for yourself, work or support:
- Connect to Wi-Fi when practical, charge the device according to the guidance shown for your market, check storage and back up important information.
- Open Settings > Software update or System updates.
- Tap Download and install, Check for updates or the carrier’s equivalent.
- Follow every prompt and let the device restart without interruption.
- Open Software update > Last update and read the date and summary if available.
- Open About phone/tablet > Software information and note the Android version and build.
- On supported software, open Security and privacy > Updates > Security update and read the reported status.
- If no update appears or the records conflict, check model, carrier and location eligibility before contacting Samsung or the carrier.
The same verification sequence applies after a Smart Switch installation; only the download and installation route changes.
