Match the replacement filter to your refrigerator’s model, then follow that model’s instructions to remove the old cartridge, seat the new one, check for leaks, flush the required amount of water, and reset the indicator if your refrigerator has one. The release motion, water shutoff requirement, and flushing volume vary by model, so there is no single procedure that fits every refrigerator.

Before you start: identify the right filter

Find your refrigerator’s model number and the filter designation on the existing cartridge or in the owner’s manual. Use those details to confirm compatibility in the manufacturer’s filter guide. Bosch recommends looking up a filter by refrigerator model, and Whirlpool and GE also provide model- or filter-specific instructions. Do not assume a cartridge fits because it looks similar to the old one.

Check the replacement’s instructions for any protective covers or seals that must be removed before installation. Keep a towel nearby; a small amount of water may drip when you remove the old cartridge.

Install the filter step by step

  1. Consult the manual. Locate the water-filter section for your exact refrigerator model. It should show where the filter is, how to release it, whether to shut off the water, and how to install the replacement.
  2. Stop dispensing water. Follow the manual’s water-supply instructions. The requirement differs: GE’s described replacement and Fisher & Paykel’s covered procedures do not require shutting off the supply, while Samsung Canada’s procedure instructs users to shut it off.
  3. Locate and release the old filter. The compartment may be inside the refrigerator or behind the base grille. Depending on the design, the filter may twist, pull out, or release using a button or cap. Use the motion specified for your model; do not force it.
  4. Prepare and fit the new cartridge. Remove any packaging and protective covers specified in its instructions. Align the cartridge with the housing, then push or turn it as directed until it is firmly seated. Do not overtighten it.
  5. Restore the water supply if you turned it off, then check for leaks. Inspect the filter housing and dispense water while watching for drips. If water leaks, stop and check the cartridge’s alignment and whether it is fully seated.
  6. Flush the filter and reset the indicator. Dispense and discard the amount specified in your manual. If your refrigerator has a filter-life indicator, reset it using the model-specific control-panel instructions.

How much water should you flush?

Follow the amount given for your refrigerator and filter rather than treating a manufacturer’s figure as universal. Published manufacturer guidance differs: Bosch’s general guide says to discard 2–3 gallons or the amount specified by the manufacturer; Whirlpool specifies four gallons for the filter covered by its instructions; LG gives approximately 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters) for its described procedure; and Fisher & Paykel gives 8 L (2 gal) for covered models. These amounts are model- or procedure-specific, and the pages do not state publication years.

When should you replace the filter?

Use the interval for your refrigerator model. Bosch gives about six months as a general interval. GE says its refrigerators typically need replacement every six months or after 170–200 gallons, depending on model. These are manufacturer guidelines for their respective refrigerators, not a universal standard.

Troubleshoot a filter that will not fit or leaks

The filter will not turn or seat

  • Stop rather than applying more force. Check that the cartridge matches the refrigerator model and is aligned with the housing.
  • Recheck the manual for the correct release and insertion motion; filter mechanisms differ, including among Whirlpool filter types.

Water flow is weak or the filter leaks

  • Check that the cartridge is fully seated and that you handled its seals and protective covers as instructed.
  • Inspect the filter housing and dispenser for drips. If the problem persists, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions.
