To install a Palworld dedicated server with SteamCMD, prepare a 64-bit Windows or Linux host, install SteamCMD, download App ID 2394010, start PalServer.exe on Windows or PalServer.sh on Linux, and forward UDP port 8211. The complete download and repair command is:

steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit

A reliable host should have at least the documented 16 GB of memory, four or more CPU cores, and fast SSD storage. The same SteamCMD command updates the files after a Palworld patch.

What you need before installing

A dedicated server is a separate Palworld process that remains online for players even when the person who owns the game is not playing. The host must run a supported 64-bit operating system and have enough memory, CPU capacity, storage performance, and network access for the process.

Requirement Documented guidance Why it matters
Operating system 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Linux These are the supported operating-system families listed for the dedicated server.
CPU Four CPU cores or more recommended More cores provide headroom for the server process and other host tasks.
Memory 16 GB recommended Memory pressure can cause instability, especially as the world and player activity grow.
Storage Fast SSD recommended World saves and server reads depend on storage responsiveness and reliability.
Network Router access, a stable private host address, and firewall administration Players on the internet need a consistent path to the machine running PalServer.
Game port UDP 8211 by default; the value can be changed The router, host firewall, server configuration, and player connection address must agree.

Eight gigabytes may allow the process to boot, but it is not the recommended target. The Palworld Server Guide warns: 8GB is also bootable, but increases the possibility of server crashes due to out of memory. Treat 16 GB as the practical baseline for a dependable installation.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Storage quality is also important. The same requirements page states: Low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. Use an SSD with sufficient free space rather than a slow, heavily loaded disk.

Check the host before you begin

  • Confirm that the operating system is 64-bit, not a 32-bit installation.
  • Verify that the machine has four or more CPU cores and 16 GB of memory available to the server and its operating system.
  • Reserve a fixed private IP address for the host, either with a router DHCP reservation or an equivalent network configuration. Port forwarding can break if the host receives a different address later.
  • Make sure you can sign in to the router and create inbound firewall rules on the host.
  • Plan a backup location on a different disk or machine for the PalServer save and configuration directories.

If a hardware upgrade is necessary, a compatible 16 GB DDR4 RAM kit is a reasonable way to reach the documented memory target. Check the motherboard’s DDR generation, form factor, slot layout, and maximum capacity before purchasing; DDR4 modules are not interchangeable with other memory generations.

Choose Windows, Linux, or Docker

Palworld documents Windows with SteamCMD, Linux with SteamCMD, Windows with Steam, and an official Docker image as deployment approaches. SteamCMD is the most direct route when you want to manage the dedicated-server files yourself.

Option Best fit Administration trade-offs
Windows with SteamCMD Administrators who prefer a graphical operating system and straightforward executable launches Simple to inspect interactively; Windows Defender Firewall and router rules still require configuration.
Linux with SteamCMD Administrators comfortable with shells, permissions, service managers, and firewall tooling Well suited to an always-on host, but file permissions and service management require more command-line work.
Docker image Operators already using containers and persistent-volume management Container networking, volume ownership, updates, and backups add another layer. Storage I/O performance remains important.

This guide uses the Windows and Linux SteamCMD workflows because they expose the PalServer files and launch commands directly.

Install SteamCMD

SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line Steam client. Install it before downloading Palworld, using your operating system’s normal package method or the official SteamCMD distribution procedure. Place it in a directory where the account that will run the server has read, write, and execute access.

Windows

  1. Download and extract SteamCMD into a dedicated folder, such as a server-tools directory. Avoid placing it in a location where the operating system silently restricts write access.
  2. Run steamcmd.exe once so SteamCMD can update itself and create its working directories.
  3. Keep the SteamCMD folder path handy. The PalServer directory will be created below SteamCMD’s steamapps\common tree unless you deliberately use another install location.

Linux

  1. Install SteamCMD through the distribution’s supported package method or extract the official SteamCMD distribution.
  2. Run SteamCMD once under the account that will operate PalServer. This creates the client directories and confirms that the executable and required libraries work.
  3. Use a directory owned by that account for the server files. If you later run PalServer as a service, make sure the service account can read and write the entire PalServer tree and its save data.

SteamCMD installation details vary by distribution and Windows layout, but the Palworld download command is the same once the steamcmd command is available.

Download and validate the Palworld dedicated server

Open a shell or SteamCMD-capable command prompt and run:

steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit

The number 2394010 is the Palworld Dedicated Server Steam App ID. The command performs four operations:

  1. +login anonymous signs in with the anonymous account used for this dedicated-server download.
  2. +app_update 2394010 downloads the Palworld dedicated-server application or brings an existing installation up to date.
  3. validate checks the local files and can replace missing or damaged content.
  4. +quit closes SteamCMD after the operation completes.

Run the command from the SteamCMD installation or call SteamCMD with its full path if the executable is not on your system’s PATH. On a successful first run, SteamCMD creates the PalServer files under its library structure. The exact absolute path depends on where you installed SteamCMD.

Make the update command repeatable

Save the command in a small update script rather than retyping it. Run that script whenever Palworld publishes a server update, and always restart PalServer afterward. Updating files while the server process is still running can leave a mixed installation, so stop the process first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that an older executable will remain compatible with the current Palworld client. A completed SteamCMD update followed by a clean restart is the normal maintenance sequence.

Start PalServer

After SteamCMD finishes, change into the downloaded PalServer directory. The official launch examples are different on each platform.

Windows launch

cd .steamappscommonPalServer
PalServer.exe

Run those commands from the SteamCMD installation directory, or replace the relative path with the actual absolute path if SteamCMD is elsewhere. Keep the console window open while testing. Its output shows whether the executable can load files, create save data, and bind the network port.

Linux launch

cd ~/Steam/steamapps/common/PalServer
./PalServer.sh

The Linux script must be launched from the PalServer directory (or referenced with its full path) and must be executable. If your SteamCMD library is not under ~/Steam, use the real library path. Run the process under the account that owns the installation so it can create and update saves.

What happens on the first launch

The first start creates the server’s save and configuration structure. Let the process finish initialization and watch the log for errors before attempting an internet connection. Keep the terminal or console attached during initial testing; messages about missing files, permissions, or a port-binding failure are much easier to diagnose there than after the window is closed.

Once the server is proven to start, you can place it under your normal process-management arrangement. Linux administrators may use a service manager, while Windows operators may use an equivalent scheduled or service-based process, provided the account has access to the PalServer directory and the process is stopped cleanly before updates.

Forward the game port and open the firewall

The default Palworld connection port is UDP 8211. A working internet connection requires both router forwarding and a host-firewall rule; opening only one is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the host’s private IP address and confirm that it remains fixed through a DHCP reservation or static configuration.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule that sends inbound UDP 8211 from the public interface to the host’s private IP and the same UDP port.
  3. On Windows Firewall or the Linux firewall in use on the host, add an inbound rule allowing UDP 8211 for the PalServer process or host profile you intend to use.
  4. Start PalServer and confirm in its console output that it binds successfully. A binding error usually means another process already owns the port or a previous server instance is still running.
  5. Have a player connect using the public address and port appropriate to your network. Test from outside the host’s own LAN when possible; some routers do not support reliable hairpin connections from an internal client to the public address.

If you change the port

A custom port is valid, but consistency is mandatory. Set the desired value using the server’s supported configuration or launch setting, then apply that same value everywhere.

Component Value that must match
PalServer configuration or launch setting The chosen UDP port
Router port-forward The external and internal UDP destination you intend players to use
Host firewall An inbound rule allowing that UDP port
Player connection details The public address and selected port

Do not expose unrelated administrative services just because you are opening the game port. Forward only what the server requires and restrict management access to trusted networks or accounts.

Update, validate, and back up the server

Use this sequence after a Palworld patch or when you suspect damaged files:

  1. Warn connected players and stop PalServer cleanly.
  2. Back up the PalServer save and configuration directories. Keep at least one copy outside the live installation.
  3. Run steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit.
  4. Read the SteamCMD output and confirm that the update and validation complete without an error.
  5. Start PalServer.exe on Windows or PalServer.sh on Linux again.
  6. Watch the startup log, then connect with a client whose game is also current.

Backups are especially important before major updates or configuration changes. A backup that has never been tested is not a recovery plan, so periodically verify that the saved files can be copied to a separate installation location.

Troubleshoot common installation failures

SteamCMD is not recognized

The shell cannot find the executable when SteamCMD’s directory is not on PATH. Change into the SteamCMD directory first or invoke the executable with its full path. Confirm that you are running the 64-bit-compatible installation intended for the host.

The app update downloads nothing or stops with an error

  • Check that the host can reach Steam’s servers and that outbound traffic is not blocked.
  • Confirm the App ID is exactly 2394010 and that the command includes +login anonymous.
  • Verify write permissions on the SteamCMD directory and available disk space.
  • Run the command again with validate; it is designed to detect and repair incomplete or damaged files.

PalServer.exe or PalServer.sh is missing

You may be in the wrong Steam library. Locate the directory created under steamapps/common/PalServer (or the corresponding Windows path), then launch from that directory. If the directory is genuinely incomplete, stop any running process and rerun the SteamCMD update-and-validate command.

The server exits or reports out-of-memory conditions

Check available memory and background workloads. Although 8 GB can boot, the documented guidance warns that it raises the likelihood of out-of-memory crashes. Move toward the recommended 16 GB baseline, close competing workloads, and confirm that the operating system is not exhausting its own memory.

The server cannot bind UDP 8211

Check for another PalServer instance or another application already using the port. Stop the conflicting process, then retry. If you intentionally selected a different port, verify that the server setting, router rule, and firewall rule all use the same value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players time out from the internet

  • Confirm that PalServer is running and listening before testing the network.
  • Check the host’s private IP and make sure the router forward still targets it.
  • Verify that the firewall rule allows inbound UDP, not only TCP.
  • Test from an external network to avoid a router’s unsupported hairpin behavior.
  • Review the startup log for a port-binding or initialization error.

Saves become damaged after a crash

Review storage performance and free space. The Palworld requirements page warns that low-performance storage may corrupt saved data. Restore the most recent known-good backup, then investigate disk health, capacity, and competing disk workloads before bringing the server back online.

Clients report a version mismatch after an update

Stop the server, run the SteamCMD update command with validation, and restart PalServer. Players must also update their Palworld client. Starting an old executable after a server patch can leave the server and clients on incompatible versions.

Operational checklist

  • Use a 64-bit Windows or Linux host.
  • Target four or more CPU cores and 16 GB of memory.
  • Install SteamCMD and keep its installation path documented.
  • Download App ID 2394010 with anonymous login and validation.
  • Launch the correct executable from the PalServer directory.
  • Reserve the host’s private IP address.
  • Forward and allow UDP 8211, unless you deliberately configure another port.
  • Back up saves before updates and configuration changes.
  • Stop PalServer before replacing files.
  • Run the SteamCMD update command after every server patch, then restart and inspect the log.

When SteamCMD is the right choice

SteamCMD is a good fit when you want direct control over files, updates, backups, and the host operating system. Windows keeps the launch process familiar for administrators who prefer a graphical desktop. Linux is often a better match for an always-on machine when you already understand permissions, firewall tooling, and service management. Docker can standardize deployment for an existing container environment, but it does not remove the need for reliable storage, persistent saves, network forwarding, and disciplined updates.

The essential installation path is the same in every case: meet the host requirements, install SteamCMD, update App ID 2394010 with validation, launch PalServer, and make UDP 8211 reachable through both the router and the host firewall.
