Install a monitor arm without damaging a desk by treating compatibility as a requirement, not a guess: identify the exact arm model, measure the desktop at the proposed mounting point, inspect the edge and underside, confirm the monitor’s weight and VESA fit, and use only the mounting hardware and protection specified by the manufacturer. A clamp normally avoids drilling, but it can still dent or crush a desktop if its pressure surfaces do not fit or are overtightened. A grommet mount makes a permanent hole unless a suitable one already exists.

Check compatibility before touching the desk

Monitor arms that look similar can have different clamp ranges, grommet dimensions, load limits and installation procedures. Find the installation guide for the exact model and keep it open while planning the location. Do not use a dimension from another arm as a substitute.

Measure the desktop

Measure the worksurface thickness where the base will sit, not only at the front edge. A desk can vary in thickness, and a recessed or chamfered edge may not provide the flat contact the clamp requires. Record the measurement in millimetres or centimetres and compare it with the arm manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the edge and clearance

  • Confirm that the rear edge is flat enough for the upper clamp jaw to sit squarely.
  • Leave the rear clearance required by the arm. BenQ’s checklist for one cited arm recommends at least 5 cm behind the desk and a flat edge within the first 2.5 cm. Those figures apply to that product, not to monitor arms generally.
  • Look below the proposed location for aprons, crossbars, drawers, cable trays or other beams that could block the lower pressure plate.
  • Check that the arm can rotate without striking a wall, shelf or divider.

Check the monitor and arm load

Read the arm’s maximum load and supported screen size, then check the monitor’s actual weight without its original stand. Confirm the VESA hole pattern and the screw thread and length specified by the arm. A monitor that is within the screen-size range can still exceed the weight limit, especially after adding a heavy webcam, speaker or other accessory.

Choose the least risky mounting method

The right method depends on the desk construction, the available space and whether you are willing to make a permanent hole.

Method What the desk must provide Desk change Main risks to check
Clamp An accessible, sufficiently flat edge within the exact clamp’s thickness range, with unobstructed underside clearance Normally no drilling Dents, crushing, slipping or an uneven load if the pressure plate does not seat fully
Grommet A compatible existing hole, or permission and suitable material for drilling; correct hole diameter, location and tabletop thickness An existing hole may be used; drilling is permanent Wrong hole size, damage to the surface or inability to reposition the arm
Freestanding stand Enough clear desk area for the base No clamp or drilling Uses surface space and may be less suitable where the desk is shallow or crowded

Use a freestanding stand when the edge is incompatible with both clamp and grommet mounting, or when drilling would be unacceptable. BenQ lists this as an alternative for a cited arm when no suitable grommet hole exists and the user does not want to drill.

Protect the desktop before tightening anything

Use the supplied pad or reinforcement plate

Install the pad, washer, plate or other protective part exactly where the manual shows it. BenQ’s BSH02 quick-start guide states: “Required for glass or fragile tabletops. Use reinforcement plates to protect tabletops and enhance stability.” The purpose is to distribute pressure, but the statement is not blanket approval for every arm or every glass desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the arm maker specifies a reinforcement plate, use the supplied part first. A separate monitor-arm desk reinforcement plate is appropriate only when the arm maker confirms that it is compatible. A generic board or metal plate is not proof that a fragile desk is safe.

Identify vulnerable materials

Glass, hollow-core and dent-prone desktops require special caution. BenQ’s checklist identifies those surfaces as potentially unsuitable for a standard mount and describes its reinforcement plate as distributing clamp pressure and helping prevent indentations. Check both the desk manufacturer’s guidance and the monitor-arm manual. If either source rules out the installation, choose a freestanding stand instead.

Install a clamp mount step by step

  1. Clear and support the work area. Remove the monitor and anything fragile from the desk. If the desk is light or has adjustable legs, have another person hold it steady while you position the base.
  2. Set the clamp configuration. Some bases have different positions or spacers for thin and thick desktops. Configure the parts for the measured thickness according to the manual; do not leave an unused spacer in a way that changes the contact surfaces.
  3. Position the upper jaw. Place the top of the clamp on a flat section of the rear edge. Keep it far enough from a corner, cut-out or chamfer that the full jaw can bear on the desktop.
  4. Seat the lower pressure plate. From underneath, verify that the lower plate is fully against the underside and aligned with the upper jaw. It must not rest on an apron, cable tray or a narrow edge.
  5. Place the protection. Fit the supplied pad or reinforcement plate between the clamp and the desk as illustrated. If the plate cannot lie flat, stop and resolve the fit before tightening.
  6. Tighten gradually. Turn the supplied handle or tool in small increments while checking that the base remains square. Tighten only to the maker’s direction. The goal is a secure, fully seated clamp, not maximum force.
  7. Watch the surface. Stop immediately if the finish begins to whiten, the laminate bows, a veneer cracks, the wood compresses or the base shifts while tightening. Loosen the clamp and reassess the thickness, edge shape and protective parts.
  8. Test the unloaded base. Push the base gently in several directions. It should not rock or slide, and the desk should not flex excessively. Do not attach the monitor until the base passes this check.

Never compensate for a poor fit by forcing the screw or adding improvised packing that changes the clamp geometry. If the pressure plate cannot make full contact, the location or mounting method is wrong.

Install a grommet mount step by step

A grommet mount uses a bolt and plate through the desktop. It is suitable only when the hole, material, thickness and location match the exact arm instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check for an existing hole. Measure its diameter and inspect its distance from the rear edge and nearby obstructions. A cable-management hole works only if its dimensions and position match the arm.
  2. Confirm the tabletop material. Make sure the desk maker permits drilling or grommet hardware in that material. Do not drill glass, a hollow panel or a structural member unless the relevant manufacturer explicitly approves the method.
  3. Decide whether permanence is acceptable. A drilled hole fixes the arm’s location and can reduce future desk-reconfiguration options. If that is unacceptable, use a clamp or freestanding stand.
  4. Drill only to the specified size. Mark the location from the arm’s template or instructions, protect the finish from splintering, and verify the underside is clear before drilling. A hole that is too large can prevent the fixing plate from bearing correctly.
  5. Install the fixing plate or washer. Place the specified plate under the desk, align the base and bolt, and keep the parts flat against the surfaces.
  6. Tighten without overtightening. BenQ cautions against overtightening its grommet screw. Stop when the base is secure according to the manual; excessive force can crush the desktop or damage the hole.
  7. Check movement before adding the monitor. Confirm that the base remains fixed when the arm is moved through its intended range.

For reference, BenQ’s BDL01/BSL01 FAQ lists a 1–5 cm tabletop thickness for its grommet method, but that range is specific to those products. A cited Global Furniture Group guide specifies a minimum 1.6-inch grommet hole for its applicable setup. Measure your own arm’s required hole rather than adopting either figure.

Attach and adjust the monitor safely

  1. Prepare the VESA interface. Match the monitor’s mounting holes to the arm plate and use only the supplied or specified screws. Compare screw length and thread type with the monitor manual; stop if a screw meets resistance.
  2. Support the display. Keep the monitor supported with both hands, or have a second person hold it, while you attach the plate. Do not let the display hang from partially engaged screws.
  3. Engage the lock or latch. Many arms use a hook, latch or retaining screw. Confirm that it is fully engaged before releasing the monitor.
  4. Set spring tension gradually. Adjust tension in small steps with the screen installed. If the arm rises, falls or drifts, stop and correct the tension rather than forcing the joints.
  5. Route cables with slack. Leave enough loop for the arm’s full movement. A taut cable can pull the monitor, twist the arm or transmit force to the desk.
  6. Test the complete assembly. Move the screen slowly through its normal range while watching the base, desktop and cables. Keep the arm within the manufacturer’s movement and load limits.

Product-specific dimensions show why the manual matters

The following figures are examples from named manufacturer documents, not universal standards.

Document and product context Published or accessed Stated dimension or limit How to use the figure
StarTech cited monitor-arm manual Indexed as approximately 2018 Clamp thickness 20–100 mm; grommet thickness 20–50 mm; maximum load 7 kg Use only for the cited StarTech arm and configuration
Global Furniture Group guide for listed clamp models June 2023 Worksurface thickness 1–1.75 inches Applies to the listed models, not every clamp base
BenQ checklist for its cited arm Accessed October 2026; publication date not explicit Clamp thickness 1.7–5 cm, or 1.2–4.5 cm with its reinforcement plate; at least 5 cm behind the desk; edge flat within the first 2.5 cm Check which configuration and plate the manual specifies
BenQ BDL01/BSL01 FAQ May 8, 2026 Grommet method for a 1–5 cm tabletop Applies to that FAQ’s products and method

Special cases: bamboo, glass and hollow-core desks

Bamboo or other hard, finished wood

Bamboo can have a durable surface while still being vulnerable to concentrated clamp pressure, especially near an edge or over a joint. Measure the thickness, confirm the edge is flat, use the specified pad or plate and tighten only as directed. Check the surface again after loading the monitor and after the first few adjustments. Do not assume that a hard finish makes an improvised clamp arrangement safe.

Glass

Do not clamp a glass desktop unless the arm and desk manufacturers explicitly approve that installation and specify the required reinforcement. The BenQ quick-start instruction requiring reinforcement plates for glass or fragile tabletops is product-specific guidance. If the manual is silent or the desk maker prohibits clamping, use a freestanding stand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hollow-core or thin-panel desks

A hollow panel may not distribute pressure like solid wood or a reinforced worksurface. Check for an approved plate and for a solid structural area under the proposed mounting point. If the lower pressure plate would bear on a hollow span, do not proceed without explicit approval.

Stop conditions and fixes

Symptom Likely issue Safe response
The clamp will not open far enough The desktop exceeds the arm’s range or the clamp is configured incorrectly Re-measure, check the configuration in the manual and choose a compatible mount if the desk is out of range
The lower plate hits a beam or apron Insufficient underside clearance Move to a clear location only if the edge and monitor position remain suitable; otherwise use another method
The desktop dents or bows while tightening Excessive pressure, missing protection or an unsuitable surface Loosen immediately, inspect for damage and follow the manufacturer’s reinforcement requirements
The base rocks after tightening Uneven contact, a chamfered edge, loose hardware or an incorrect spacer Remove the load, correct the contact surfaces and retighten only as directed; do not add random shims
The grommet bolt does not fit Wrong hole diameter, thickness or hardware Do not enlarge the hole by guesswork; verify the exact specification or select a different mount
The arm slowly rises or drops Spring tension does not match the installed monitor Adjust tension in small increments with the monitor supported
Cables pull when the arm moves Insufficient cable slack or a tight cable channel Reroute with a loose loop and retest the full movement range

Final safety checklist

  • The arm model and installation guide are identified.
  • Desktop thickness, edge shape, rear clearance and underside obstructions were checked at the actual mounting point.
  • The monitor’s weight, VESA pattern, screw specification and the arm’s load limit match.
  • The chosen clamp or grommet method is approved for the desk material.
  • All supplied pads, plates, washers and spacers are installed as shown.
  • The clamp or grommet is secure without visible deformation or overtightening.
  • The monitor lock or latch is engaged and the display is supported during attachment.
  • Spring tension is adjusted gradually and cables have enough slack.
  • The complete assembly remains stable while the screen moves through its normal range.

What to do if no mounting method fits

Do not force a clamp onto an oversized, curved or fragile edge, and do not drill simply to avoid buying a different stand. If the desk fails the thickness, geometry, material or clearance checks, a freestanding stand is the lowest-change option. If the monitor is too heavy for the arm, use an arm with a suitable load rating rather than weakening the desk or exceeding the mechanism’s limit.
