How to Install a LOMP Stack: OpenLiteSpeed, MariaDB and PHP

A LOMP stack is Linux, OpenLiteSpeed, MariaDB and PHP running together to serve dynamic websites. On a supported 64-bit Linux server, the most predictable setup is to add the OpenLiteSpeed package repository, install openlitespeed and a matching LSPHP build with its MariaDB/MySQL extension, install and harden MariaDB, then connect a virtual host to the PHP external application. Use the one-click script for a bundled WordPress deployment, or the ols CLI when you need repeatable automation and dry runs.

What you need before installing

Plan the server before running an installer. The procedure assumes a clean machine rather than an existing Apache, Nginx, MySQL or PHP deployment that may already occupy the same ports or service names.

• Supported operating system: the current repository documentation lists 64-bit CentOS 8–10, Debian 11–13, Ubuntu 22, 24 and 26, plus common Red Hat derivatives. Package names and availability can change as a distribution approaches end of life, so verify the current support list for your exact release.
• Privileges: a root shell or a user with working sudo access.
• Network identity: a static server address and control of the domain’s DNS records. You need this before requesting an automatic TLS certificate.
• Ports: reserve TCP 80 for HTTP, 443 for HTTPS and 7080 for the OpenLiteSpeed WebAdmin console. The CLI installer specifically expects these ports to be available.
• Backups: decide where MariaDB dumps and site files will be stored before putting an application into production.

Record the operating-system release, intended PHP version, domain name and document-root path. Keeping those decisions explicit makes a later rebuild reproducible.

Choose an installation route

All three supported routes can produce the same LOMP components, but they differ in automation and how much configuration remains after installation.

Choose the repository route when you want every package and service action visible. Choose the one-click script for a new WordPress server where installing OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, MariaDB and the WordPress components together is useful. Choose the CLI for scripted provisioning, especially when a dry run is required before changing a clean server.

Route 1: install from the OpenLiteSpeed repository

The commands below use Debian or Ubuntu package conventions. First configure the current LiteSpeed repository using its distribution-specific instructions; the repository must be present before apt can find openlitespeed or the lsphp packages. Do not mix packages from an old repository with a newer operating-system release.

Install OpenLiteSpeed and LSPHP

1. Refresh package metadata after the repository has been added:

   sudo apt update

2. Install the web server:

   sudo apt install openlitespeed

3. Select a PHP build that is currently offered for your operating system. The package naming pattern below uses PHP 8.4; replace 84 with the supported suffix you selected:

   PHP_VERSION=84
   sudo apt install lsphp${PHP_VERSION} lsphp${PHP_VERSION}-common lsphp${PHP_VERSION}-mysql

   The -mysql package supplies the PHP connector used by MariaDB and MySQL-compatible applications. Install any additional LSPHP extensions your application requires, such as XML, cURL, GD or mbstring, using the same versioned naming pattern.

4. Enable and start OpenLiteSpeed, then inspect its service state:

   sudo systemctl enable --now lsws
   sudo systemctl status lsws

If apt reports that a package cannot be found, do not substitute an unversioned PHP package blindly. Confirm that the repository supports your distribution and use the PHP suffix listed for that release.

Install and start MariaDB

1. Install the server and client utilities:

   sudo apt update
   sudo apt install mariadb-server mariadb-client
   sudo systemctl enable --now mariadb

2. Run the interactive hardening utility:

   sudo mariadb-secure-installation

3. When prompted, set or confirm the administrative authentication method, remove anonymous users, disallow remote root access, remove the default test database and reload privilege tables. The exact prompts differ between MariaDB releases; read each question rather than assuming a fixed sequence.

4. Verify the daemon:

   sudo systemctl status mariadb

Removing anonymous accounts prevents unauthenticated local logins. Blocking remote root access limits the damage from a stolen administrator credential; create a separate application account instead. The test database is not needed by a production application and should not remain exposed.

Create an application database account

Log in locally as the MariaDB administrator and create a database plus a least-privileged user. Replace the example names and password with values stored in your application’s secret configuration:

sudo mariadb
CREATE DATABASE appdb CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
CREATE USER 'appuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'CHANGE_THIS_LONG_PASSWORD';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON appdb.* TO 'appuser'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

Granting rights on one database is safer than granting global privileges. If the application runs on another host, define a narrowly restricted host or network instead of reopening root access.

Route 2: use the one-click installer

The one-click script is intended for a clean server. Obtain the current script using the command shown in the official OpenLiteSpeed installation instructions, review it, and run it with root privileges.

Bundled WordPress deployment

sudo bash ols1clk.sh -W

The -W option installs OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP, MariaDB, WordPress and LiteSpeed Cache. It is appropriate when WordPress is the planned application and you want the database and web stack assembled in one pass.

Server and PHP components only

sudo bash ols1clk.sh

Without -W, the script installs the server and PHP components only. Install and harden MariaDB separately, then create the database account and virtual-host configuration yourself.

Before using an automatic certificate option, create the domain’s DNS A and, if applicable, AAAA records so they point to this server. Ensure ports 80 and 443 reach it from the public internet; certificate validation cannot succeed while the name points elsewhere or the ports are blocked.

Route 3: provision with the ols CLI

The CLI is useful for infrastructure-as-code and repeatable server builds. Run it on a clean host with ports 80, 443 and 7080 available.

1. Inspect the installed command’s current options because PHP flag names, database selectors and listener arguments can change between releases:

   ols install --help

   sudo ols install --dry-run

3. After checking the preview, run the install with the PHP version, MariaDB selection and listener choices required by your deployment. Use the exact option names printed by your installed CLI:

   sudo ols install

4. Record the options used in your provisioning system and inspect the resulting services and listeners. A dry run is valuable in automation, but it does not replace checking DNS, firewall rules and virtual-host mappings after the real run.

The CLI does not remove the need to understand OpenLiteSpeed’s generated configuration. Treat its output as a starting point, then set the domain, document root, PHP handler and TLS policy deliberately.

Set the WebAdmin password and open the console

OpenLiteSpeed’s administrative console listens on port 7080. Set a unique password before exposing it:

sudo /usr/local/lsws/admin/misc/admpass.sh

Restrict port 7080 at the firewall or cloud security group to your administration IPs whenever possible. Browse to https://SERVER_IP:7080; a browser warning is expected if the console is using its initial self-signed certificate.

Configure a virtual host, listener and PHP handler

The package or installer creates a default server, but a real domain should have its own virtual host and document root.

Create the document root

sudo mkdir -p /var/www/example.com/html
sudo chmod 755 /var/www/example.com
sudo chmod 755 /var/www/example.com/html

Replace example.com with your domain. Upload the application files while preserving ownership and permissions required by the application; avoid making the entire tree world-writable.

Add the virtual host in WebAdmin

1. Sign in to WebAdmin on port 7080 and open the virtual-host configuration area.
2. Add a virtual host named for the domain and set its document root to /var/www/example.com/html.
3. Create or select a listener for HTTP on port 80 and map the domain to the new virtual host. Add the HTTPS listener on port 443 after TLS is ready.
4. Save the configuration and perform a graceful restart when WebAdmin offers it. Check the server error log if the restart reports a syntax or path error.

Define the LSPHP external application

In the server’s external-application settings, add a LiteSpeed SAPI application for the installed PHP build. For PHP 8.4, the executable is normally:

/usr/local/lsws/lsphp84/bin/lsphp

Use the executable directory that exists on your server when a different version is installed. Assign a Unix-domain socket or other local endpoint as shown by your OpenLiteSpeed version, then map requests ending in .php to this external application through the virtual host’s script handler settings. A mismatch between the handler’s version and the installed executable is a common cause of 503 responses.

Apply and verify configuration

Save the configuration, run the built-in configuration test if available, and restart or gracefully reload OpenLiteSpeed. Inspect sudo systemctl status lsws and the OpenLiteSpeed error log immediately if the service fails to reload.

Enable HTTPS after DNS is correct

Use the certificate workflow provided by your installer or WebAdmin only after the domain resolves to this server. Confirm that an HTTP request reaches the intended virtual host first, then request the certificate and configure the port-443 listener. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS only after the HTTPS endpoint works; otherwise a redirect can hide the original connectivity problem.

Renewal is a service responsibility, not a one-time checkbox. Check the certificate-expiration date, keep port 80 reachable for the selected validation method, and monitor renewal logs.

Test the complete stack

These are verification steps for your server, not claimed universal test results.

1. HTTP routing: resolve the domain from an external network and request it with a browser or curl. Confirm that the intended virtual host, not the default page, responds.
2. HTTPS: open the HTTPS URL and inspect the certificate name, expiration and redirect behavior.
3. PHP execution: create a temporary file in the document root containing <?php echo 'LOMP OK'; ?>, request it, then delete it. Do not leave diagnostic files such as phpinfo() publicly accessible.
4. Database connectivity: use the application account to connect locally, then install or configure a small database-backed application using the database name, user and password created earlier.
5. Logs: watch OpenLiteSpeed and MariaDB logs while making a request. A 404 usually indicates routing or document-root trouble; a 503 commonly indicates a stopped or mismatched PHP external application; an authentication error points to MariaDB credentials or grants.

Common failures and fixes

Production maintenance and security

• Apply operating-system, OpenLiteSpeed, LSPHP and MariaDB security updates on a scheduled basis. Recheck package compatibility when changing PHP versions.
• Keep WebAdmin on a restricted network path; do not expose port 7080 broadly when a firewall or private administration network is available.
• Use separate MariaDB accounts per application, strong generated passwords and database-level grants.
• Back up both databases and uploaded files. A typical logical backup command is mariadb-dump --all-databases; send the output to protected storage and periodically verify that a restore works.
• Monitor lsws and mariadb service state, disk space, certificate expiry, error rates and backup completion.
• Remove temporary PHP diagnostics, installer files and unused virtual hosts after validation.

Package names, supported operating-system releases, PHP flags and MariaDB options are volatile. Check the current OpenLiteSpeed documentation whenever you rebuild a server or upgrade a distribution, particularly near an operating-system end-of-life date.
