The reliable way to install a game server panel on a gaming VPS is to deploy Pterodactyl: the Panel provides the web control plane, while Wings runs on one or more nodes and uses Docker to start each game server in its own container. A supported Linux image, root or sudo access, working Docker support, DNS, HTTPS, and enough CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth for your games are the real prerequisites.
For a first installation, use native Linux on Ubuntu 24.04 (the documented recommendation), Ubuntu 22.04, or Debian 12/13. Verify the VPS uses KVM or another virtualization type that permits Docker before you pay for a plan. The sequence below takes you from an empty VPS to a tested game server, and explains when a Docker-based Panel deployment is a better maintenance choice.

What you are installing: Panel, Wings, and Docker
Pterodactyl is not one process that does everything. It is a control-plane and node architecture.
The Panel is the control plane
The Panel is the web application where administrators create users, nodes, servers, allocations, databases, schedules, and backups. It stores configuration and metadata in a database, exposes the browser interface, and sends instructions to nodes. It does not hold the live game files for the servers it manages.

Wings is the node daemon
Wings runs on every machine that will host games. It communicates with the Panel, manages Docker, creates and removes containers, streams console output, handles file operations, and performs power actions such as start, stop, restart, and kill. The Pterodactyl documentation describes it plainly: “Wings runs on each node and manages Docker, and runs your game servers for the Panel.”
Docker isolates each game
Each game server runs in its own Docker container. An egg supplies the startup logic, environment variables, install routine, and container image for a particular game. Isolation prevents one server’s process tree and dependencies from directly colliding with another’s, but it does not create extra CPU, memory, disk, or network capacity. Those resources still come from the VPS.
One VPS or separate machines?
For a private or small community server, the Panel and Wings can run on the same VPS, provided the machine has enough resources and the provider permits Docker. For a hosting operation, place the Panel on a management server and add separate Wings nodes. This lets you move game workloads without moving the web application and limits the effect of a busy or compromised game container.
“Every game server in its own Docker container.” — Pterodactyl
Check VPS compatibility before installing anything
Choose a supported operating system
The documented native choices are Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, and Debian 13 for the Panel. Wings supports Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 and Debian 11/12/13. Use a current 64-bit image supplied by the VPS provider rather than an end-of-life template. Keep the Panel and Wings on versions supported by their respective documentation; they do not have to be the same distribution when they are on separate machines.
Confirm virtualization and Docker support
KVM is the dependable choice for a Docker-based node. Some low-cost VPS products are containers rather than virtual machines. OpenVZ, LXC, and Virtuozzo can prevent Docker from starting unless the provider deliberately exposes nested Docker and the required kernel features. Run this command immediately after connecting:
systemd-detect-virt
If it reports kvm, that is normally suitable. If it reports openvz, lxc, or virtuozzo, ask the provider in writing whether Docker and nested virtualization are supported on that exact plan and image. Do not continue on an unsupported node and hope the container runtime will work later.

Confirm access, networking, and naming
- Use a root login or a sudo-capable account. The installation changes packages, services, firewall rules, and files under
/etc. - Assign a stable public IP to the node. A changing address will break DNS and Panel-to-Wings communication.
- Choose a domain name for the Panel and create its DNS record before requesting HTTPS. A node hostname or subdomain should resolve to the Wings node.
- Make sure the provider allows the game ports you intend to allocate. Some networks block common ports or require an additional firewall rule.
- Decide where backups will be stored. A backup on the same VPS is not protection against disk failure or VPS loss.
Size the VPS for the games you will actually run
There is no single official CPU or RAM minimum that fits every Pterodactyl installation. Requirements vary with the game engine, mod pack, world size, player count, tick rate, plugins, map generation, database workload, and backup frequency. A Panel with no active games is inexpensive; a heavily modded game can consume several gigabytes by itself.
| Resource | What determines demand | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Simulation tick rate, number of players, world generation, plugins, and concurrent containers | Favor strong per-core performance for simulation-heavy games; reserve headroom so the Panel, database, and Docker housekeeping are not starved. |
| Memory | Game heap or process size, Java flags, mods, caches, database, and simultaneous servers | Budget the requested memory for every server plus the operating system and services. Do not allocate all physical RAM to game limits. |
| Storage | Game binaries, worlds, logs, mod updates, temporary installers, and backup retention | Use fast SSD storage and leave free space for updates and Docker layers. Backups consume node storage unless sent elsewhere. |
| Network | Player traffic, downloads, RCON or console activity, and backup transfers | Check both bandwidth limits and port filtering. Large mod packs can make installation traffic significant. |
Start with one representative server, monitor CPU, memory, disk I/O, and latency, then add capacity. A larger plan cannot fix a provider kernel that lacks Docker features or a game image built for the wrong CPU architecture.
Native installation: the clearest first deployment
Native installation puts the Panel’s dependencies directly on the operating system. It is the straightforward path when you are comfortable with package managers, editing configuration files, and managing system services.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
1. Update the operating system
Log in as root or use sudo, apply the distribution’s security updates, and reboot if the kernel or core libraries require it. Confirm the hostname and time zone, and remove packages you know will conflict with the web server or database. Keep a record of the operating-system release so future upgrades can be planned against Pterodactyl’s supported versions.
2. Install the Panel dependencies
The Panel requires PHP 8.3 or 8.4, Composer 2, MariaDB 10.11/11 or MySQL 8/9, Redis, a web server such as NGINX, a queue worker, and a scheduler cron entry. Install the versions and PHP extensions listed for your selected operating system in the current Pterodactyl requirements and getting-started documentation; extension names and package commands differ between Ubuntu and Debian.
Keep database credentials, the Panel application key, and the Redis connection details in a password manager. Do not paste secrets into screenshots, shell history shared with other administrators, or public issue reports.
3. Install and configure the Panel
- Download the Panel release and place it in the web root selected by the installation guide.
- Install its Composer dependencies with Composer 2, then create the application environment file and generate the application key.
- Create a dedicated MariaDB or MySQL database and user. Grant only the privileges required by the Panel database.
- Run the documented database migrations and seed steps, then create the first administrator account.
- Configure the web server to serve the Panel’s public directory, pass PHP requests to the correct PHP-FPM version, and deny access to private application files.
- Configure the queue worker as a persistent service and add the scheduler’s cron entry. Without these, tasks such as server creation, scheduled commands, and background jobs can appear to work while silently remaining queued.
- Point your domain’s DNS record at the Panel server and obtain an HTTPS certificate. Use HTTPS before adding nodes so Wings can validate the Panel endpoint securely.
The official guide assumes you can edit files, inspect service logs, and restart services. Treat a green browser page as only the first check: also sign in, create a test administrator action, and confirm that queue and scheduler jobs execute.

Install Docker and Wings on the node
1. Install Docker from a supported source
On the Wings node, install Docker using the method documented for your operating system, then verify that the daemon starts at boot. A basic service check is:
sudo systemctl enable --now docker
sudo docker info
If Docker will not start, inspect the service journal and the provider’s kernel image. The Wings documentation warns that modified kernels can lack Docker features. Rebuild or select a supported provider image rather than weakening isolation or using an untrusted workaround.
2. Create the Wings directory
Create the configuration directory with root ownership:
sudo mkdir -p /etc/pterodactyl
Download the Wings binary version specified by the current documentation, place it in the documented location, and mark it executable. Do not substitute a binary compiled for a different CPU architecture.
3. Create the node in the Panel
- Sign in to the Panel as an administrator.
- Open Admin → Nodes and choose to create a node.
- Enter the node’s name, public address, scheme, and resource limits. The address must resolve from the Panel and from administrators’ browsers where appropriate.
- Save the node, open its Configuration tab, and copy the auto-deploy command or configuration file supplied there.
- Run that command on the Wings machine, or write the supplied content to
/etc/pterodactyl/config.yml. Protect the file because it contains credentials and node settings.
4. Test Wings in the foreground
Start Wings in debug mode before creating any game server:
sudo wings --debug
Read the output, rather than interrupting it immediately. Resolve Docker connection failures, malformed YAML, DNS errors, certificate errors, and blocked ports while the messages are visible. When the node remains healthy, stop the foreground process and install the persistent system service described by the Wings guide. Enable it at boot and check its status after a reboot.
Create and test the first game server
Select an egg and allocate resources
In the Panel, choose an egg that matches the game and version you intend to run. An egg controls the image and startup behavior; it does not guarantee that every mod, plugin, or architecture is supported. Assign an allocation (IP and port), a memory limit, CPU limit, disk limit, and backup policy that leave room for the operating system and other services.

Install the server
Create the server and start its installation. Watch the live console for image-pull failures, permission errors, unavailable downloads, or an installer that exits with a non-zero status. After installation, accept the game’s license terms where required, edit configuration files through the Panel, and start the process again.
Exercise the operational paths
- Connect a real client and verify latency, login, and gameplay.
- Use the console to issue a harmless command and confirm output returns to the Panel.
- Upload and download a small file to test file transfer permissions.
- Stop and restart the server, then reboot the node to verify automatic recovery.
- Create a backup and confirm where it is stored and how it would be restored.
- Check that a scheduled task runs at the expected time and that logs remain readable.
Game files and their backups live on Wings nodes, not in the Panel container or Panel web volume. The Pterodactyl Docker documentation states this explicitly. Include node storage and off-node backup capacity in your design.
Docker deployment for the Panel
A Docker deployment packages the Panel’s NGINX, PHP, queue worker, and scheduler into the Panel image. It can make upgrades and service composition more repeatable, but it does not remove the database or Redis requirement, and it does not replace Wings. Wings still runs separately on every node that hosts game containers.
Use immutable image selection
Use a specific Panel image tag or digest rather than an unqualified latest tag. Record the selected version so a rollback is possible. Keep the database and Redis services on supported versions and protect their credentials with environment secrets.
Recommended Free Tools
Run migrations deliberately
After pulling a new image, run the documented migrations explicitly and inspect their output. Do not assume that restarting the container automatically updates the schema. Back up the database together with /app/var/.env; the database without the environment file may not be sufficient to restore the application.
Understand volume boundaries
Persist the Panel data and configuration volumes required by the deployment, but do not mistake them for game storage. Server files and backups remain on Wings nodes. Back up those node directories according to the game’s recovery requirements, preferably to separate infrastructure.

| Decision point | Native Panel | Docker Panel |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging | PHP, NGINX, queue worker, scheduler, database client, and services are installed on the host. | NGINX, PHP, queue worker, and scheduler are packaged in the Panel image; database and Redis are still required. |
| Maintenance | Direct system packages and service logs are familiar to Linux administrators. | Image upgrades are repeatable, but tags, volumes, migrations, and container logs must be managed carefully. |
| Wings relationship | Wings is a separate node service. | Wings is still a separate node service; Dockerizing the Panel does not Dockerize away this requirement. |
| Best fit | A first installation on Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian with conventional system administration. | Teams already operating Docker Compose or another container workflow and able to manage persistent data. |
| Backup concern | Back up the host configuration and database, plus game data on nodes. | Back up the database and /app/var/.env, persistent Panel volumes, and game data on nodes. |

Secure the installation before inviting players
- Use HTTPS for the Panel and a valid certificate for every node endpoint.
- Allow only required ports through the provider firewall and the operating-system firewall. Keep database and Redis ports private.
- Use unique administrator passwords, enable multi-factor authentication if available in your deployment, and remove unused accounts.
- Keep Ubuntu, Debian, PHP, Docker, Panel, Wings, and game images updated on a maintenance schedule.
- Limit sudo access and avoid running unrelated applications on a game node.
- Monitor disk usage, memory pressure, Docker failures, certificate expiry, and backup completion.
- Test a restore on a separate location. A backup job that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Troubleshoot by layer
The VPS cannot run Docker
Re-run systemd-detect-virt, verify the provider’s virtualization type, and inspect the Docker service journal. OpenVZ, LXC, or Virtuozzo usually means you need provider confirmation or a different plan. A modified kernel may also omit required Docker features.
The Panel cannot reach Wings
Check the node URL in Admin → Nodes, DNS resolution, the HTTPS certificate chain, firewall rules, and the generated /etc/pterodactyl/config.yml. Compare the node’s public address with the address actually reachable from the Panel server. Run Wings in debug mode to expose certificate, authentication, or port errors.
A game image will not start
Confirm that the image supports the node’s CPU architecture and that Docker can pull it. An ARM64 Panel image does not make every game image ARM64-compatible. Verify the egg’s image, inspect the container error, and choose a compatible node or image rather than repeatedly restarting the same container.
Jobs remain queued
Check the queue worker service, Redis connection, and scheduler cron entry. Confirm that the worker is running under the intended application user and that its logs show jobs being consumed. A working web interface does not prove that background workers are healthy.
Backups fill the disk
Inspect node storage, retention settings, and the destination configured for each server. Keep only the recovery points you need locally and copy important backups to separate storage. Remember that node backups are independent of Panel volumes.

LinuxGSM is an alternative automation tool for installing supported game servers from the command line. It is useful when you want scripts and service management without a web control plane, but its documented workflow is not the Panel-plus-Wings architecture described here. Choose it when a single administrator prefers shell automation; choose Pterodactyl when browser-based administration, isolated containers, user accounts, allocations, and multiple nodes are central requirements.
