Use Percona’s package repository, choose a supported release, take and verify a restorable backup, then decide between an in-place package replacement and a fresh logical migration. A fresh server gives you the cleanest rollback and validation boundary; an in-place change usually needs less storage and a shorter maintenance window but keeps the existing data directory and configuration in the change path.
What Percona Server changes—and what it does not
Percona Server for MySQL is designed as a freely available, open-source, enhanced, drop-in replacement for MySQL. Percona states that applications using MySQL Community or Enterprise Edition can generally be migrated without code or configuration changes. That is compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that every workload behaves identically.

Before production cutover, test the items that are specific to your environment:
- Storage engines, plugins and user-defined functions
- Authentication plugins and TLS settings
- SQL modes, character sets and collations
- Replication, binary logging and GTID behavior
- Backup agents, monitoring exporters and connection pools
- Third-party integrations that depend on server version or metadata

Choose a supported Percona release first
Do not select a package solely because it matches the version currently installed. Check Percona’s lifecycle matrix for the exact operating-system release and CPU architecture on the target host.
- MySQL 5.7 support ended in October/November 2023, according to Percona’s 2023 lifecycle information. Paid post-end-of-life support is a separate offering.
- Percona Server for MySQL 8.0 reached end of life on April 1, 2026.
- Percona lists active 8.4.x and 9.7 LTS lines on selected 64-bit platforms in its 2026 lifecycle information. Availability depends on the specific OS and architecture.
- The 9.7 documentation set identifies 9.7.1-1 as its latest release at the time that documentation was captured. Confirm the current package revision before installation.
Record the source and target versions, OS release, architecture, storage layout and replication role. A major-version jump may require more metadata changes and application testing than a same-series replacement.

Both approaches are valid. The right choice depends on your downtime allowance, rollback requirements and available capacity.

For a high-risk production database, a parallel server is usually the safer operational boundary. For a small, well-tested installation with a reliable rollback image and a short maintenance window, an in-place replacement can be reasonable.

Back up MySQL and prove the backup works
Never begin a replacement with an unverified backup. Percona XtraBackup is Percona’s open-source backup utility for MySQL and Percona Server; Percona describes it as supporting online, non-blocking, compressed and secure full backups. Whatever tool you use, the important operational test is a restore.
- Record the server version, configuration files, data directory, users, grants, replication settings, binary-log position and GTID state.
- Take a full backup, including the objects and metadata required to rebuild the instance.
- Copy the backup to storage that is independent of the source host.
- Restore it on an isolated host or disposable instance using the same target platform you plan to deploy.
- Start the restored server, inspect its error log, verify representative tables and run a sample application connection.
- Document the restore duration, required storage and the exact steps needed to make the backup usable.
Keep the original server, its packages and its configuration available until post-cutover validation is complete. A backup that has never been restored is not a rollback plan.
Prepare the operating system and installation method
Percona recommends its package repositories where possible. Debian and Ubuntu use APT packages; Red Hat-family distributions use YUM or DNF packages. Percona also documents binary packages, source compilation and Docker images.
Before adding a repository
- Confirm that the OS version and 64-bit CPU architecture appear in the lifecycle matrix for the chosen Percona line.
- Remove or disable conflicting MySQL or third-party database repositories so the package manager cannot mix server components from different vendors.
- Check free space for the packages, temporary files, logs and the data directory.
- Confirm the service name, data-directory path and configuration-file locations used by the distribution.
- Schedule a maintenance window if this host currently serves production traffic.
Repository installation
Follow the repository setup procedure in the documentation for the exact Percona release and OS. Then use the platform’s package manager to install the server and client packages. Package names and repository components vary by release, so copy them from that release’s guide rather than reusing a command from an older article.

Binary, source or Docker deployment
Binary packages are useful when the distribution repository is unsupported. A source build gives maximum control but transfers responsibility for build dependencies, service integration, upgrades and security updates to your team. Docker is practical when your organization already manages persistent volumes, secrets, networking and database backups as containers; it does not remove the need to validate storage durability or recovery.
Install a fresh Percona instance
Use this path when you want a clean data directory and an explicit restore or logical-load test before production traffic moves.

- Provision the target. Install a supported 64-bit OS, apply security updates, configure time synchronization and allocate storage sized for the restored data plus growth, logs and temporary files.
- Configure access. Permit only the administration and application networks that need database access. Establish TLS and secret handling before importing production data.
- Add Percona’s repository. Select the repository instructions for the target OS and chosen Percona release. Do not enable multiple server-release repositories at once.
- Install the packages. Install the server and client components with APT on Debian/Ubuntu or YUM/DNF on Red Hat-family systems, using the package names in the current release guide.
- Review the generated configuration. Set the data directory, listen addresses, authentication, character set, SQL mode, InnoDB settings, binary logging and replication parameters deliberately. Do not copy an old
my.cnfwholesale. - Initialize and start the service. Use the service-management procedure documented for the distribution. Check the error log immediately after startup.
- Load a test copy. Restore the verified physical backup or import a logical export into the new instance. Validate representative schemas, views, routines, events, accounts and grants.
- Exercise the application. Run reads and writes through the real connection path, including pooling, failover and TLS. Compare errors and latency with the source under a representative workload.
- Schedule cutover. Quiesce writes, perform the final backup or replication catch-up, record the final position or GTID state, switch the application endpoint and monitor continuously.
Replace MySQL in place
An in-place replacement keeps the existing data directory while the server packages and binaries change. It is operationally shorter but less isolated, so take an image or independently restorable backup before touching packages.
- Freeze the change set. Record package versions, configuration files, enabled plugins, service overrides, users, grants, replication status and GTID state.
- Quiesce the database. Stop application writes or stop the application tier. Confirm that no scheduled job, replica or administrative session can modify data during the replacement.
- Stop the service. The service may be named
mysqlormysqlddepending on the distribution. Verify the actual unit before stopping it. - Preserve configuration and packages. Copy configuration files, custom systemd overrides, certificates and repository definitions. Keep the previous package versions available for rollback.
- Install the Percona packages. Use the current repository instructions for your OS and release. Do not force-install packages across unsupported distributions or architectures.
- Review configuration compatibility. Remove or revise obsolete variables, plugin references and paths. A setting accepted by one MySQL or Percona release may be rejected by another.
- Perform documented upgrade work. Some older procedures require running
mysql_upgrademanually when the installer does not do so. Do not assume that command is required—or even available—in a current release; follow the target release guide for system-table and metadata upgrades. - Start Percona and inspect logs. Look for data-dictionary errors, failed plugins, permission problems, incompatible options and recovery messages before allowing clients to reconnect.
- Check replication and GTIDs. Confirm source and replica roles, binary logging, executed and retrieved GTID sets, replication filters and channel status.
- Run application smoke tests. Test authentication, reads, writes, transactions, background jobs and any feature that depends on a plugin or stored program.
If startup fails, stop the service, preserve the error log, avoid repeated destructive initialization attempts and use the tested backup or the preserved original installation to return to a known state.

Logical migration from MySQL to a fresh server
A logical migration exports SQL and loads it into a new Percona instance. It is slower than moving files, but it gives you a clean target and a useful opportunity to detect incompatible definitions.
Export scope
Export application schemas, routines, triggers, events and the grants or account definitions your application needs. Record server-level settings separately. Treat the mysql system database with special care.
GTID warning
Percona’s 9.7 upgrade guidance warns that a dump containing the mysql system database must not be loaded when gtid_mode=ON. Follow the release-specific dump and import rules, and recreate or migrate accounts using the documented method instead of blindly importing system tables.
Load and validate
- Import into an isolated target with production-like SQL modes, character sets and time-zone settings.
- Check that every schema, table, view, routine, trigger and event expected by the application exists.
- Compare row counts and selected checksums for critical tables.
- Verify indexes, foreign keys, generated columns and collations.
- Recreate users and grants, then test connections using the same authentication method as production.
- Run application integration and write-path tests before scheduling the final export and cutover.
Cutover checklist
- Approved Percona release and supported OS/architecture confirmed
- Full backup completed and restored successfully elsewhere
- Rollback owner, decision deadline and traffic-switch mechanism documented
- Application writes paused or replication caught up
- Final binary-log position or GTID state recorded
- Percona service started with reviewed configuration
- Error logs, replication channels and GTID state clean
- Application smoke tests passed, including writes and background workers
- Monitoring, alerting and backup jobs pointed at the new instance
- Original server retained until the rollback window expires
Common failure modes and recovery
The package manager selects the wrong server version
Disable conflicting repositories, verify the enabled Percona repository and inspect the candidate package version before installation. Never mix packages from an unsupported OS release.

Percona will not start after the replacement
Read the first fatal error in the service log. Common causes include an obsolete configuration variable, an unavailable plugin, incorrect ownership of the data directory or a changed path. Restore the previous package and configuration only through the rollback procedure you tested; do not initialize a new empty data directory over the original.
Replication does not resume
Compare server IDs, binary-log settings, executed and retrieved GTID sets, credentials, TLS and replication filters. Do not reset GTIDs or skip transactions until you understand the data consequence and have a verified backup.

The application connects but behaves differently
Compare SQL mode, authentication plugin, collation, time zone, transaction isolation and prepared-statement behavior. Check server and application logs together, then reproduce the failing query on both versions.
The logical dump fails around system tables
Revisit the target release’s migration guidance. In particular, do not load a dump containing the mysql system database while gtid_mode=ON when the release guide prohibits it. Export application data separately and recreate accounts through supported procedures.
Which path should you use?
Choose an in-place replacement when the existing data directory is healthy, the version change is supported, you have a tested image or backup, and a short maintenance window matters more than isolation. Choose a fresh logical or physical migration when you need a clean rollback boundary, are crossing a large version gap, want to test configuration and restore behavior, or can provide parallel storage. In either case, the decision is incomplete until the backup restore and application smoke test have passed.
