To install an FTB modpack server, download the Server Installer from FTB’s official server-files page, select the exact modpack and version your players will use, and run the installer in a dedicated folder. On Windows, launch the downloaded executable and then use the generated run.bat. On macOS or Linux, make the installer executable and run it from a terminal. The installer downloads and extracts the correct server files and can obtain the required Java version automatically.

The most important detail is version discipline: the server pack, every player’s FTB App installation, and the Minecraft/mod-loader version must match. Do not rename the installer, because its filename tells FTB which pack and release to install.

What you need before installing

An FTB server is a collection of Minecraft server files, mods, configuration files, and a launch script for one specific modpack release. It is not installed by copying the contents of a player’s instance. FTB’s documented workflow uses a separate Server Installer that selects and retrieves the server package for you.

  • A Minecraft account for each person who will play. Installation itself does not require signing in, but Minecraft authentication is required when connecting to play.
  • A computer or server running Windows, macOS, or Linux, with permission to create files and execute programs in the chosen directory.
  • Enough memory for the selected pack. FTB’s current guide says most packs recommend at least 4–6 GB of RAM, while some require more. Use the Requirements section for the exact pack rather than treating that range as a universal setting.
  • Storage for the installer, libraries, mods, configuration files, logs, and the generated world. Keep the server in its own folder so updates, backups, and permissions are easier to manage.
  • The same modpack name and release number that your players intend to install in the FTB App.

FTB’s guide is specifically about creating the server files. It does not provide a universal recipe for router port forwarding, firewall rules, backups, permissions, or performance tuning. Those are separate operating tasks and depend on your network, operating system, and hosting arrangement.

Choose the exact FTB pack and version

Use the live server-files listing

Open FTB’s official server-files page and first choose the operating system on which the server will run. Locate the modpack, then select the release required by the players. FTB generally presents the newest release as the normal choice, but selecting deliberately is safer when an existing world, tutorial, or client installation depends on an older version.

Pack releases change over time. For example, the current Direwolf20 1.21 server-files listing includes releases such as 1.22.0 and 1.21.0. That is why an old article, a copied filename, or a remembered version number is not a reliable selection method. Read the current listing each time you create or migrate a server.

Match the client and server

Write down the complete pack name and version before downloading. Every player should install that same combination in the FTB App. A client on a different pack release can fail during login, reject the server’s mod list, or load a different set of blocks and items. “The same pack” is not sufficient if one person is on an earlier or later release.

Download the official Server Installer

Keep the original filename

Download the installer offered for the selected pack and operating system. FTB distributes a single executable that downloads, updates, and extracts the server files. Place it directly in the folder that will contain the server, such as a new directory dedicated to this world.

Do not rename the downloaded file. The filename identifies the pack and version. If you change it, the installer loses that filename-based selection and asks you to supply pack and version IDs manually. Renaming also makes copied instructions and support logs harder to interpret.

Use the desktop download or a server command

The server-files page provides a normal desktop download and platform-specific commands. The desktop download is usually simplest for a one-time setup. A command-line download is useful on a headless machine, over SSH, or when you are documenting a repeatable deployment. Whichever method you use, verify that the file is in the intended server folder before executing it.

Install the server on Windows

  1. Create a dedicated folder. Make a new directory for this server, for example a folder under your chosen data drive. Avoid placing it inside a synchronized cloud folder or a location where antivirus software routinely quarantines newly downloaded executables.
  2. Move the unchanged installer into that folder. Confirm that the filename still includes the pack and release information supplied by FTB.
  3. Run the installer. Double-click the downloaded .exe. Answer the prompts for the selected pack and version, if prompted, and allow the installer to download the required files. The initial run can take time because libraries, mods, and the mod loader must be extracted.
  4. Wait for extraction to finish. Do not close the installer while it is downloading or unpacking. A partially populated folder is not a usable server and may require you to run the installer again.
  5. Start the generated server script. When the installer completes, use the run.bat file it created in the same folder. This script supplies the launch command expected by that pack.
  6. Read the first console output. Leave the console open while the server starts. Watch for a normal completion message, a request to accept Minecraft’s EULA, or an error identifying a missing file, Java problem, or insufficient memory. Do not guess at a launch command from another pack; use the generated script unless the pack’s own README says otherwise.

If Windows blocks the executable

Windows security software can prevent an unfamiliar installer from running. Check the file’s properties and your antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine. Only restore or allow a file that you intentionally downloaded from FTB’s official server-files page. If the installer itself stops unexpectedly after you have confirmed the download, FTB directs users to its GitHub issue tracker for installer-specific reports.

Install the server on macOS or Linux

On Unix-like systems, the installer must have execute permission. Open a terminal and change to the directory containing the unchanged installer before running it.

  1. Open the server directory. Use your file manager’s “Open in Terminal” action where available, or change directories with cd. The command must run in the directory where the installer should create the server files.
  2. Grant execute permission. Run chmod +x serverinstaller_{id}_{versionid}, replacing the brace-form name with the exact filename downloaded from FTB. Keep the filename unchanged; the braces here describe the installer’s pack and version identifiers.
  3. Run the installer. Execute the file from the current directory. A typical invocation is ./serverinstaller_{id}_{versionid}. Follow any prompts and wait for downloads and extraction to complete.
  4. Use explicit IDs when necessary. If the filename is unavailable, renamed, or being used in automation, the installer README documents ./serverinstaller -pack <pack_id> -version <version_id>. Supply the IDs for the exact pack and release you selected on the server-files page.
  5. Start the generated server command. After extraction, inspect the generated files and README for that pack’s launch script or command. Keep the terminal attached for the first start so you can see EULA prompts, Java errors, and other diagnostics.

Common macOS and Linux permission problems

“Permission denied” normally means the execute bit was not set or the command was run against a different filename. List the directory, copy the exact name, run chmod +x again, and invoke it with the ./ prefix. If the installer was downloaded to a temporary directory, move it into the permanent server folder before repeating the command.

Java: what the installer does and when you intervene

For the documented FTB path, a separate Java installation is not required before you begin. The installer can download the Java version required by the selected pack. This reduces one of the most common causes of failed modded-server starts: using a Java release that the pack or its mod loader does not support.

The installer README includes a -no-java option. That flag tells the installer not to obtain Java automatically, so use it only when you deliberately provide and maintain a compatible Java installation yourself. If a script, hosting image, or system policy already supplies Java, verify its version against the pack’s Requirements information before disabling automatic Java handling.

Allocate memory based on the pack’s requirements

Memory needs vary with the modpack, world size, view distance, number of loaded chunks, and player activity. FTB states that most packs recommend at least 4–6 GB of RAM, but some require more. Treat that figure as a starting point, not a promise of a particular player count or frame rate.

  1. Open the selected pack’s Requirements section on FTB’s listing.
  2. Record the stated server-memory recommendation and any Java or operating-system notes.
  3. Reserve memory for the operating system and other services. Do not give the Minecraft process all of the machine’s physical RAM.
  4. Start with the pack’s recommendation, then observe the server console and system memory while players explore and generate terrain.
  5. Increase the allocation only when the host has available memory and logs or monitoring show memory pressure. More allocated RAM does not fix a bad mod, a slow disk, or a network problem.

The generated launch script is the safest starting point because it contains the pack’s expected command. Change its memory arguments only after checking the pack’s documentation and understanding which Java executable the script uses. Keep a copy of the original script so you can revert a failed change.

Complete the first server start

Accept the EULA if prompted

Many Minecraft servers create an EULA file on their first launch and stop until you accept it. Read that file, change the acceptance value only if you agree to Minecraft’s terms, and start the generated script again. The exact prompt and filename can differ by pack, so use what appears in your server directory rather than copying a path from an unrelated tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the world and mod list load

On a successful start, the console should progress through mod loading and world preparation instead of repeatedly exiting. Check that the expected pack files, configuration directory, libraries, and world directory exist. Stop the server using its console command rather than closing the window abruptly; this gives Minecraft a chance to save the world cleanly.

Connect locally before opening the server publicly

If the server and a test client are on the same machine or local network, test that path first. The client must use the exact FTB pack and version selected for the server. A local test separates installation errors from later router, firewall, or internet-access problems.

Install and update the matching client

Players use the FTB App to install the same modpack release selected for the server. The app handles pack installation, updates, and Java management. Have each player compare the displayed pack name and version with the server’s selection before attempting to join.

Installing a newer client “because it is available” can be just as incompatible as installing an older one. If the server is intentionally kept on an earlier release for an existing world, pin every client to that release until you plan and test an upgrade.

Installer command-line options

The installer README documents switches for scripted or headless deployments. Use the exact spelling shown by the version you downloaded; options can be meaningful only in particular combinations.

Option Purpose When it helps
-dir Chooses the directory used for installation or server files. Useful when a script must place several servers in separate directories.
-auto Runs the installer with automated behavior rather than interactive prompts. Useful for repeatable deployments after you have verified the selected IDs and paths.
-latest Selects the latest available release for the chosen pack. Use only when automatically following the newest release is intentional; fixed versions are safer for an existing world.
-validate Validates the installation or downloaded files. Helpful after an interrupted download or when diagnosing corrupted files.
-threads Controls download or processing concurrency. Can be adjusted on machines where default parallelism is too aggressive or too slow.
-skip-modloader Skips automatic mod-loader handling. Use only when the pack’s instructions explicitly require it; otherwise the normal installer should manage the loader.
-no-java Prevents the installer from downloading Java. Appropriate only when you have verified and will maintain a compatible Java installation.

For automation, combine an explicit pack and version with a fixed destination instead of relying on a renamed file or an implicit “latest” selection. Keep the command in your deployment notes so another administrator can reproduce the same server.

Troubleshoot the problems most likely to occur

The installer asks for pack or version IDs

This usually happens because the installer was renamed, copied without its original name, or launched through a script that hides the filename. Download the file again or use the explicit -pack and -version arguments documented in the README. Confirm the IDs against the live FTB server-files listing before proceeding.

The installer cannot download files

Check that the host has internet access, that the destination directory is writable, and that firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the installer. A partial directory can be left behind after a failed run; use the installer’s validation option where appropriate, or remove only the incomplete installation after preserving any world you need. If the installer continues to stop, FTB directs users to its GitHub issue tracker.

The FTB App cannot download the client pack

Check the client’s firewall and antivirus controls first. Security software can block the app’s download or extraction process. If those checks do not resolve the problem, FTB’s getting-started guidance points users to the FTB Discord support community.

The server starts and immediately exits

  • Read the final console lines rather than the first warning. They normally identify the missing dependency or invalid setting.
  • Verify that the generated launch script is being used and that its Java executable exists.
  • Check the pack’s Requirements section for a required Java version or greater memory allocation.
  • Run the installer’s validation procedure if files may be incomplete.
  • Undo recent manual edits to scripts or configuration files, then test the untouched generated files.

Players receive a mod-list or version mismatch

Compare the server’s selected release with the version shown in each player’s FTB App instance. Update or roll back clients as a group. Do not add or remove individual mods casually: a seemingly harmless change can alter the server’s required mod list or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players cannot connect from outside the home network

If local connections work but remote connections fail, the installation itself is probably complete. The remaining work is network administration: the host firewall, router port forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, and the server’s listening address may all matter. FTB’s creation guide does not prescribe one port-forwarding or firewall configuration, so follow documentation for your router and operating system and expose only the service you intend to run.

Self-hosting versus a managed server

Running the files on your own computer gives you direct control over worlds, configuration, backups, and mod updates, but you are responsible for uptime, operating-system updates, network access, and recovery. A managed FTB host can reduce setup effort and provide a web control panel, but it adds recurring cost and limits you to the provider’s supported packs, locations, backup policy, and file access.

Decision factor Self-hosted machine Managed FTB hosting
Initial setup Download the Server Installer, configure the machine, and handle networking yourself. Often provides a preconfigured instance or one-click pack selection.
Ongoing cost Uses hardware, electricity, and your existing internet connection; no universal price is established by FTB’s installation guide. Requires a recurring plan whose price and limits vary by provider.
Control Full access to files, scripts, Java, backups, and operating-system settings. Control depends on the host’s panel, permissions, and policies.
Location and latency Determined by your own network and physical location. Choose among the provider’s available data-center regions.
Backups and recovery You must design, schedule, and test backups. Backup frequency, retention, and restoration options depend on the plan.
Pack support You can use any pack that the machine can run, subject to its requirements. Confirm that the host supports the exact FTB pack and version before paying.

Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable administering a computer and want unrestricted file access. Choose managed hosting when reducing maintenance is more important than minimizing recurring cost or retaining complete control. In either case, verify current terms, supported versions, storage limits, and backup behavior before moving an established world.

Updating an existing FTB server safely

  1. Stop the server cleanly and wait for the console to confirm that the process has ended.
  2. Back up the world and configuration. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory so a failed update cannot overwrite every copy.
  3. Record the current pack and version. This lets you return to the known-good release if the new one changes mods or world behavior.
  4. Read the target release notes and Requirements section. Check for Java, memory, or migration requirements before downloading.
  5. Install the target server files in a new directory when practical. This preserves the old installation for rollback and makes it clear which launch script belongs to which release.
  6. Test a copy of the world first. Confirm that the server starts, the expected mods load, and players can connect before replacing the production directory.
  7. Update every client together. Players should move to the same target pack version only after the server test succeeds.

Never use the -latest option for a production world unless you have accepted automatic movement to newer releases and have a tested rollback plan. Fixed pack and version IDs make scheduled maintenance more predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a successful installation includes

  • The unchanged FTB installer has completed without download or extraction errors.
  • The server directory contains the generated launch script, libraries, mods, configuration files, and the pack’s README or supporting metadata.
  • Java is available either through the installer’s automatic download or through a verified system installation.
  • The server starts from the generated script and remains running after world creation.
  • A client using the identical FTB pack and version can connect on the local network.
  • You have separately planned firewall, remote-access, backup, and maintenance procedures before inviting players over the internet.

The Bottom Line

Download the exact FTB Server Installer from the live server-files page, leave its filename unchanged, and run it in a dedicated folder. Windows uses the executable and generated run.bat; macOS and Linux require chmod +x and terminal execution. Let the installer manage Java unless you have a verified alternative, follow the selected pack’s memory requirement, and keep every client on the same pack version. Networking, backups, and long-term administration remain separate tasks after the files are created.
