Install the custom track on the server and on every player’s computer, preserve the mod’s original folder structure, select the exact layout, apply the change, and restart only after processing finishes. A reliable first test is a join from a client that has the identical track archive and layout. If the files, layout, or required Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) version differ, players can receive checksum errors, missing-content messages, or a server that appears to load the old circuit.
What must match before anyone joins
Assetto Corsa does not send a complete track installation to a client simply because the server has it. The server needs its own copy, and each player needs a compatible local copy. Treat the track archive as the release to reproduce on every machine.
- Track files: Use the same archive or extracted release on the server and clients. Do not combine a layout folder from one release with data or texture files from another.
- Track identifier and layout: A package may contain GP, short, drift, endurance, or other layouts. One session activates one track and one layout, so select the layout the players installed.
- Original structure: Keep the map folder,
data, layout directories, models, textures, and any author-supplied support files where the package puts them. Repacking or flattening folders can make the map invisible or incomplete. - Cars and pit boxes: The server must have at least one compatible car entry. The selected layout may provide fewer pit boxes than the player slots advertised by a hosting plan.
- Required CSP: If the track depends on a specific CSP release or server-side CSP configuration, the server and all joining clients must meet that requirement.
Verify the downloaded track locally in Content Manager or the Assetto Corsa launcher first. Load the intended layout, drive a lap, and check that scenery, timing sectors, pits, and weather effects behave as expected before uploading anything.
Install a track through Content Manager
AssettoServer can be operated inside Content Manager as well as from a dedicated folder. In the Content Manager mode, install and verify the track in your local content library, then use the server-preset controls to select the same track and layout. The exact buttons depend on the installed Content Manager and server configuration, but the important values remain the same: the track identifier, one explicit layout, at least one car, and the required CSP version.

- Install the author’s complete archive in Content Manager. Let it preserve the package’s track and layout folders instead of manually copying individual textures or data files.
- Open the server preset and select the installed circuit. If multiple layouts are exposed, choose the precise layout used in your client test.
- Save the preset, wait for any content operation to finish, and restart the server process.
- Join from a second installation or a clean test profile. This confirms that the server’s configured identifier matches the files that clients actually have.
Content Manager is convenient for browsing and validating content, while a dedicated folder is more portable and gives advanced administrators direct control over the server tree and configuration files.
Install a track through a hosted dashboard
Dashboard labels differ, but the sequence is consistent: upload the content, choose a map and layout, add a car, save, wait for processing, and restart. The archive-versus-folder requirement is provider-specific.

1. Prepare and verify the package
- Download the author’s complete track release. Keep the original ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file as your reference copy.
- Install that release locally through Content Manager and open the exact layout you intend to host.
- Record the track’s folder name and layout name or identifier. These are useful when a dashboard shows several similarly named entries.
2. Upload using the provider’s Content area
Open the server provider’s Content tab or equivalent asset library.
- Some dashboards accept a track ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive directly. Upload the complete archive rather than selected files.
- Other workflows require the already extracted track folder. For the managed workflow documented by AssettoHosting, select the folder from
Assetto Corsa > Content > Tracksand drag it into the upload area; do not submit a compressed archive in that workflow. - If the provider imposes a batch limit, respect it. The AssettoHosting guide specifies no more than 10 items at once.
Wait for the dashboard to finish unpacking and indexing the upload. Navigating away or restarting during processing can leave an incomplete map entry.

3. Choose the map and exact layout
- Open Change Map (or the provider’s equivalent picker).
- Find the uploaded circuit. If several layouts are listed, choose the one your clients installed: for example, GP rather than short or drift.
- Confirm at least one compatible car entry. An empty car list can prevent the selection from being applied.
- Check the layout’s pit-box count against the number of intended participants. A server may offer more nominal slots than this layout can safely host.
4. Apply, restart, and verify
- Press Apply Selection, Save, or the dashboard’s equivalent and wait until the operation reports completion.
- Restart the server from the provider panel. Restarting before the save or content-processing job finishes can keep the previous circuit active.
- Inspect the console or session details for the expected track identifier and layout. Do not rely only on the human-readable display name.
- On a test computer, install the identical archive and join the server. Confirm that the track loads, the checksum passes, the intended pit positions exist, and timing sectors appear before inviting the rest of the group.
Install a track in a dedicated AssettoServer folder
AssettoServer documents two operating modes: running inside Content Manager or running from a dedicated folder. The dedicated-folder mode is more portable and gives advanced administrators direct control over files and configuration.
Place the extracted track
- Extract the complete release without changing its internal directory names.
- Copy the resulting track folder below the server’s
content/tracksdirectory. A typical location iscontent/tracks/<trackname>. - Keep layout-specific files in their original layout subdirectories. Do not move a layout’s
data, models, or surfaces files into the parent folder merely to make the path look simpler.
Select it in the server preset
- Open the server preset or configuration that controls the session.
- Set the track and layout to the extracted folder and intended layout identifier.
- Save the configuration, then restart the server.
- Read the startup output to confirm that the configured identifier and layout are the ones being loaded.
If the map is absent from the picker or the server reports a missing directory, inspect the directory one level at a time. A common mistake is an extra nested folder such as content/tracks/trackname/trackname created when an archive is extracted into a folder that already has the same name.
Tracks requiring a minimum CSP version
For the minimum-CSP pattern documented by AssettoServer, use the following structure and configuration exactly:
- Create
content/tracks/csp. - Move the track folder into that
cspdirectory. - Set the track value in
server_cfg.initoTRACK=csp/<CSPversionID>/../<trackname>. - In the track’s
data/surfaces.ini, change only the firstSURFACE_0entry toCSPFACE_0. - Enable the matching minimum CSP version, save, and restart.
Do not change additional surface entries to CSPFACE_* unless the track’s documentation specifically requires it. AssettoServer warns that changing more than the first surface entry can produce client checksum errors. Every client must also run a CSP version that satisfies the configured minimum; otherwise rain, lighting, or other CSP-dependent effects may be missing even when the circuit itself loads.

Self-hosted management with Assetto Server Manager
Assetto Server Manager can work from an existing Assetto Corsa server folder or files obtained through SteamCMD. Its documented Docker deployment uses persistent server volumes, so the content directory survives container recreation.
When importing content into the manager, upload the complete content/tracks directory rather than only a single layout. That preserves track images, all layouts, and installed mod tracks for the manager’s browser and configuration screens. After the import, select the map and layout in the manager, save the server configuration, restart the service, and perform the same client join test used for a hosted dashboard.

Automatic downloads are an optional convenience, not a replacement for matching installations. The Content Manager server-details mechanism uses a cm_content/content.json file and requires EnableServerDetails: true in extra_cfg.yml.
- Use download links supplied by the track author or distributor when enabling this feature. Confirm that redistribution is allowed; do not publish a mirror merely because the server needs a file.
- Set the content version to the version shown in the server’s content tab. If the mod has no version, omit the version field rather than inventing one.
- After changing the metadata, restart and test from a client that does not already have the track. Verify that Content Manager presents the expected download and that the downloaded files produce the same checksum as the server.
If automatic delivery is unavailable, give players the author-provided archive and the exact layout name. They should install it locally, not extract only a single visible folder from the package.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect custom track

A repeatable pre-event checklist
- The local installation opens the intended layout without errors.
- The server contains the complete track package under its content tree or in the provider’s processed library.
- The selected map, layout, and at least one car are saved in the active preset.
- The layout’s pit-box capacity is sufficient for the planned grid.
- The server has been restarted after processing completed.
- Console or session details show the expected track identifier and layout.
- A clean test client with the identical archive can join and pass checksum validation.
- Timing sectors, pits, weather, and any required CSP effects work during a test lap.
- If downloads are enabled, the metadata points to an authorized author-provided archive and the version field is correct.
Key operating rules
Use one immutable track release as the source for the server and all clients. Select one explicit layout for each session, and never assume that a track’s folder name is the same as its layout identifier. Save and let content processing finish before restarting. Finally, test a real join with the exact client files: that single check catches wrong layouts, incomplete uploads, pit-box limits, checksum mismatches, and CSP incompatibilities before they interrupt an event.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I put a custom track on an Assetto Corsa server?
For a dedicated AssettoServer installation, place the extracted track folder under content/tracks/<trackname> and select its track and layout in the server preset. Hosted providers may instead require an archive upload or an extracted folder in their Content tab.
Why does the server keep loading the old track?
The new map may not have been applied, content processing may still be running, or the restart happened too early. Apply the map and exact layout again, wait for the success state, then restart and check the console identifier.

Can players automatically download the missing track?
Yes, when the server supports Content Manager server details. Configure cm_content/content.json, enable EnableServerDetails: true in extra_cfg.yml, use an authorized author-provided link, and match the content-tab version or omit the version when none exists.
Why is a layout missing from the map picker?
