To install a custom Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR, stop the server, back up its world and settings, upload the software that matches your Minecraft version, select its exact filename in your startup command or hosting panel, and launch it with the Java version that software requires. Paper can replace a compatible vanilla server JAR; Fabric uses a launcher and, for manual installations, additional files. Always test the resulting world and log before allowing players to join.
What a custom server JAR changes
A server JAR is the executable software that runs a Minecraft: Java Edition server. Vanilla Minecraft, Paper, and Fabric are different server implementations or launchers. Changing the JAR can change plugin or mod support, performance characteristics, configuration files, startup requirements, and whether an existing world can be loaded safely.

Players connecting from outside your local network may also need firewall and router port-forwarding configuration after the software itself is working.
A custom JAR is not simply a renamed file. The filename referenced by the start command or panel must match the uploaded file exactly, and some loaders require a coordinated set of libraries, properties, and a vanilla server JAR.

Choose the software before touching the server
Vanilla
Use the official Mojang server JAR when you want the standard game server and do not need a plugin or mod loader. Download the file for the exact Minecraft release you intend to run. A world created with a newer release should not be opened by an older server release without a deliberate downgrade plan and a verified backup.
Paper
Paper publishes runnable server JARs intended as a replacement for a compatible vanilla JAR. It supports the Bukkit/Spigot-style plugin ecosystem, so it is the relevant choice when your required extensions are plugins rather than Fabric mods. Paper documents Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1 and newer. Use the table for the Paper build you actually downloaded, because the required runtime follows the documented Minecraft/Paper version.
Fabric
Fabric is a mod loader. Its simple installation method produces an executable server launcher with the selected Minecraft and loader versions built into that file. Fabric recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. The launcher can be used as a drop-in replacement for a vanilla JAR on supported Minecraft hosts, administration panels, and start scripts.
A manual Fabric installation is different from a single-file Paper replacement. The launcher can expect a vanilla server.jar and may create or require a libraries directory and a server.properties file. Upload the complete set generated by the installer instead of renaming the launcher and deleting the supporting files.
Do not mix incompatible world data
Paper cannot load Fabric or Forge worlds that contain mod-added blocks, items, entities, or other game data. If a world depends on those additions, switching to Paper can produce missing content, errors, or permanent save changes. Keep a backup and continue using the original loader unless you have a documented conversion path for every modded feature.

Compatibility and requirements checklist
- Record the exact Minecraft version, such as the release shown by your existing server and the software download.
- Identify whether the target is vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, or another loader.
- List the plugins or mods the world requires and confirm that they support the target version and loader.
- Check the software’s Java requirement. A JAR compiled for a newer Java release will not start on an older runtime.
- Confirm how your host handles custom JARs: a filename field, a startup command editor, a dedicated upload action, or a restricted list of supported software.
- Make sure you can access the server directory, either through the host’s file manager, SFTP, or a local filesystem.
- Have enough disk space for the new JAR, backups, libraries, logs, and any generated world files.
Back up and stop the server
Do not replace an executable while the server is running. Paper’s update guidance explicitly warns that replacing a JAR in a running server is unsafe. A running process can keep the old file open, write a partially migrated world, or leave configuration and library files out of sync.

- Copy the entire world directory, including every dimension folder. Also copy
server.properties, the allowlist, operator list, bans, plugin or mod directories, and any startup script. - Save the panel’s current JAR selection, memory flags, Java selector, and other startup settings in a note or screenshot.
- Record the current JAR filename so you can restore it quickly if the new software fails.
- Keep the backup outside the live server directory or download it from the host. A backup stored beside a failing world can be lost with the same disk or account problem.
Download the correct server software
Official vanilla server
Use Mojang’s official Java server download for the exact release. Keep the downloaded filename unchanged until you have decided how it will be referenced. If you rename it, use the new name consistently in the panel or command.
Paper JAR
Download the Paper build that states the Minecraft version you need. Paper’s files are runnable JARs. If the downloaded file is named something like paper-1.21.x-build-number.jar, either enter that full name in the panel or rename it to a simple name such as paper.jar while the server is stopped. The command and the file must agree character for character, including capitalization.
Fabric server launcher
Download Fabric’s executable server launcher with the selected Minecraft and loader versions. The launcher itself contains that selection; choosing a different Minecraft release means downloading a different launcher. For a remote server, upload the launcher to the server directory before selecting it in the panel.
For a manual installation, follow Fabric’s generated file set. The launcher, vanilla server.jar, server.properties, and the libraries directory can all be required. Treat them as one installation rather than trying to make the launcher work as an isolated renamed JAR.

Upload the file and configure the startup method
Using a hosting panel
- Open the panel’s file manager or upload tool and enter the server’s main directory—the directory containing the existing JAR and world folders.
- Upload the new JAR. Wait for the transfer to finish before changing the startup setting.
- Open the panel’s server-type, startup, or JAR-selection page. The label varies by provider; look for Custom JAR, JAR file, or an equivalent option.
- Select or type the exact uploaded filename. Do not enter a shortened name unless you actually renamed the file.
- Set the Java version and memory options required by the software. Preserve working memory values unless the new software’s documentation says otherwise.
- Save the setting, then verify that the panel’s previewed command points to the same directory and filename you uploaded.
Some managed hosts restrict executable files or only expose approved server types. If the panel has no custom-JAR option, use its documented SFTP/startup mechanism or ask the host whether custom software is supported; do not overwrite an internal file whose location the host does not document.
Using a local or remote shell
Change to the server directory before running the command. The filename after -jar is relative to the current working directory unless you provide a full path.
cd /path/to/minecraft-server
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --noguiReplace paper.jar with the exact Paper filename. The -Xms4G and -Xmx4G values are example heap settings from Paper’s short command; they are not a universal memory recommendation. Use values appropriate for the host and leave memory for the operating system and other services.
Fabric’s documented form is:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> noguiReplace the angle-bracketed text with the real launcher filename; do not type the brackets. The difference between --nogui and nogui follows the project’s example. If your startup script uses variables, make sure the variable expands to the same case-sensitive filename that exists on disk.

Match Java to the server software
Java compatibility is determined by the server software and Minecraft version, not by the name of the JAR alone. Install or select the required runtime in the host panel, then verify which executable the startup process actually uses.

If several Java versions are installed, an interactive shell may use a different one from the panel service. Check the runtime selected by the host or run java -version in the same environment as the startup script. A version mismatch commonly appears as UnsupportedClassVersionError.
Complete the first launch and EULA step
- Start the server from its main directory with the configured command or panel control.
- Watch the console until the process stops or reports that an EULA must be accepted. A first launch normally creates initial configuration files and may create a world directory.
- Open the generated EULA file, read the license terms, and complete the acceptance setting required by Mojang’s setup instructions. Do not copy a file from an unrelated server because it can hide a path or version mistake.
- Start the server again and wait for a normal startup message indicating that it is listening and ready. A process that remains open while repeatedly printing errors is not a successful launch.
Never test a new loader against your only copy of an important world. Let the first run generate files in the backed-up server copy or keep the original backup untouched until validation is complete.

Validate the installation before players join
Read the startup log
- Confirm that the expected Minecraft version and software name appear.
- Look for Java class-version, missing-library, dependency, or permission errors.
- Check that the intended world is selected and loads without conversion or corruption warnings.
- For Paper, verify that required plugins are discovered and enabled.
- For Fabric, verify that the loader and required mods load, and that their versions match the selected Minecraft release.
Test locally first
Connect from the same machine or local network using the server address and configured port. Join with a client running the matching Minecraft version. Test movement, inventory, a representative modded block or plugin command, and a clean shutdown. If the local test fails, fix the server before changing router settings.
Configure outside access
When local connections work but remote players cannot connect, check the server bind address, operating-system firewall, host firewall, and router port-forwarding rules. Mojang notes that outside connections can require firewall or port-forwarding configuration. Confirm that the forwarded port reaches the machine running the server and that the server is listening on the expected interface.

Troubleshoot the common failures
UnsupportedClassVersionError
The runtime is too old for the classes in the server software, or the panel selected a different Java executable than expected. Compare the Minecraft/software version with the documented Java table, select the required runtime, and restart. Do not try to solve a class-version error by renaming the JAR.

Unable to access jarfile
The command is running in the wrong directory or the filename does not match. List the directory contents, copy the exact case-sensitive name, and compare it with the text after -jar or the panel’s custom-JAR field. Spaces and punctuation in a filename must also match.
EULA or immediate first-run exit
Complete the EULA requirement in the file generated by that installation, then start again. If the file is not created, check that the process has write permission in the server directory and that you are launching from the directory you backed up.
Missing mods, libraries, or plugins
Check that you selected the correct loader and uploaded the complete file set. Fabric manual installations can require the launcher, vanilla server JAR, server.properties, and libraries directory. A Paper installation will not load Fabric mods, and a plugin built for another Minecraft or server API version may fail even when Paper itself starts.
World fails after switching software
Stop the server immediately if the log reports missing mod content or the world opens with absent blocks and items. Restore the backup and run the world with its original loader. Paper is not a conversion tool for Fabric or Forge worlds that contain loader-specific data.
Players cannot connect
First test locally. Then verify the server address, listening port, bind setting, operating-system firewall, host firewall, and router forwarding. A successful console startup does not by itself make a server reachable from the internet.
Safe update and rollback routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world and all loader-specific files before replacing anything.
- Keep the previous JAR in a separate backup location and record its Java requirement.
- Upload the new file, update the exact filename in the panel or command, and select the matching Java runtime.
- Start without players, review the complete log, and perform a local connection test.
- If the world, plugins, or mods fail, stop the server, restore the previous JAR and backup, and undo the startup-setting change.
- Only after validation should you reopen remote access and invite players.
This process lets you distinguish a bad download, an incorrect filename, an incompatible Java runtime, and a genuine world-format problem instead of treating every startup failure as the same issue.
Practical decision guide
- Choose vanilla when you need the unmodified game and no loader-specific extensions.
- Choose Paper when your required extensions are plugins and your world does not contain Fabric- or Forge-added content.
- Choose Fabric when the world or feature set depends on Fabric mods, and install its launcher plus every supporting file the selected method generates.
- Use the host’s custom-JAR option only after confirming that the host permits the software and that its startup command points to the uploaded filename.
- Regardless of software, stop first, back up first, match Java, and validate the log before exposing the server to players.
Final verdict
Installing a custom server JAR is a controlled replacement of the server software, not a file-swap shortcut. The reliable sequence is to identify a compatible loader and Minecraft release, back up and stop the server, upload the complete required files, reference the exact filename, select the documented Java version, complete the first-run EULA step, and test the world and network path. Paper is the straightforward vanilla replacement for compatible plugin servers; Fabric is the correct route for Fabric mods and may require a launcher, vanilla JAR, libraries, and properties file together.
