To install a custom CurseForge modpack on a Minecraft server, use the pack’s own server files when they are available, install the exact Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric version named by the pack, upload the files to the server, accept the Minecraft EULA, and start the server with the correct loader jar. Every player must then use the same modpack platform, pack version, Minecraft version, and loader.
The most common causes of failure are mixing Minecraft versions, downloading the client profile instead of a server pack, starting vanilla minecraft_server.jar instead of the loader jar, and leaving client-only mods in a manually assembled server. The procedure below separates the reliable server-pack method from the fallback method for packs that publish no server download.
Check the pack before downloading anything
Open the modpack’s page on CurseForge and select the exact release you intend to run. Do not begin with the newest Minecraft server jar and try to fit the pack around it. The pack determines the server version, loader, and required files.

Also prepare administrative access to the server, a way to upload files (SFTP or the host’s file manager), and a backup location. Stop an existing server before replacing its files. Installing a pack into a live world without a backup can make it difficult to recover from a failed startup or a changed mod set.

Method 1: Install the published server pack
This is the preferred method because the pack author has already separated server files from the client profile and can include the correct scripts, configuration, and dependencies.
Download the server files for the exact release
- Open the modpack’s page on CurseForge.
- Open the Files tab.
- Select the precise release you want to run, including its Minecraft version and loader.
- Look for a download named Server Files. It may appear under Additional Files rather than beside the main client download.
- Save the archive locally and extract it into a new, empty folder. Keep the original archive until the server has started successfully.
Server-file titles commonly identify the pack and release, for example a name ending in “Server-Files-0.31” or “Server Files – v11.0.2.” Treat the release number in that filename as significant. Do not assume that the main modpack download is a server archive; client profiles often contain launcher metadata and client-only components that are not suitable for a dedicated server.

Inspect the extracted folder
A usable server pack may contain a manifest.json, mods and config directories, a Forge or NeoForge installer, a Fabric launcher, and a Windows or Linux start script. Some packs ship a script that downloads the loader and required mods on its first run. If the author supplied such a script, use it instead of inventing a different launch command.
Keep the directory structure intact. The files in config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, scripts, datapack folders, and similar directories can be as important as the jar files in mods. Upload the contents of the extracted server-pack folder, not an extra parent folder that leaves the server looking in the wrong path.

Install the matching server loader
Forge or NeoForge
- Read the loader version recorded by the selected pack release or its
manifest.json. - Download the corresponding Forge or NeoForge installer from the loader project’s official site.
- Run the installer and choose the server installation option.
- When prompted for a directory, select the extracted server-pack folder. Installing into a different directory creates a second, incomplete server.
- Allow the installer to place the loader files and libraries in that folder.
Use the graphical installer route when possible. The exact command-line flags for unattended installation vary by loader release; relying on an unverified flag can leave the server without its libraries. If the pack already includes an installer or a start script, follow that pack-provided process and do not install a second loader version over it.
Fabric
- Confirm the Fabric loader version and Minecraft version required by the pack.
- Use the Fabric project’s server launcher for that Minecraft version.
- Place the launcher in the server-pack directory and complete the server installation there.
- Keep the pack’s supplied
mods, configuration folders, and startup script together with the Fabric launcher.
Fabric packs can have additional libraries or launch-time requirements. A successful loader installation does not prove that every mod is present, so keep the pack’s file set intact and read the first startup log for missing dependencies.
Upload the files and set the server panel correctly
Create or select the Minecraft instance in your hosting panel. Before uploading, stop the instance and choose the Minecraft version, loader family, and Java version that match the pack. Panel labels differ, but the settings normally appear under a startup, version, or server-type section.

- Stop the server.
- Connect with SFTP or open the host’s file manager.
- Upload the extracted server-pack contents into the instance’s root directory.
- Merge folders only when you are certain they belong to the same pack release. Do not leave an old
modsorconfigfolder mixed with a new release unless you intentionally want to preserve and test those changes. - Set the startup entry to the loader jar or script created by the installation. A Forge or NeoForge server generally has a loader-specific jar or generated launch files; a Fabric server uses its Fabric launcher.
If the panel has a built-in modpack installer, you can use its Modpacks or similar tab instead. Paste the CurseForge pack link or select the pack, then choose the exact loader and version. Treat the operation as a reinstall: export or back up any existing world and configuration first, because an installer may replace files.

Accept the EULA, allocate memory, and start
- Start the server once, if necessary, so it can create its initial files, then stop it when the console indicates that an EULA file has been generated.
- Open
eula.txt, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and change only the acceptance line toeula=trueif you agree to it. - Set the memory allocation in the host panel or startup script. Allocate enough memory for the pack and player count while leaving the operating system and panel enough memory to function. There is no single safe value for every pack; large packs and heavily explored worlds need more headroom than small packs.
- Start the server with the loader entry you configured.
- Watch the console from the first line through the world-load message. A process that remains running but never reaches world loading is not ready for players.
On the first successful run, the loader may create additional libraries, cache files, or generated configuration. Stop the server cleanly before making changes. Keep the console log from a failed run; the first clear error often identifies the missing mod, wrong Java runtime, or version mismatch.
Connect players with an identical client setup
Each player should install the same modpack name, platform, and exact release through their chosen launcher, then launch that profile. “The same mods” is not precise enough: a different build of one mod, a different loader, or a changed configuration can cause a registry, handshake, or missing-mod error.

- Use the exact CurseForge pack release used for the server files.
- Do not add, remove, or update individual mods unless everyone, including the server, receives the same compatible change.
- Connect to the server address and port supplied by the host after the console reports that the world has loaded.
If a player receives a mismatch message, compare the client’s installed profile with the server’s selected release before changing server files. Reinstalling the client profile is often safer than manually replacing a single jar.
Method 2: Build a server when no server pack exists
Some CurseForge projects publish only a client download. In that case, you must assemble a server from the pack’s manifest and test it carefully. This route takes longer because client-only mods must be identified and removed, while server-required configuration must be preserved.

Install the loader first
Create an empty server directory and install the Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric server that matches the pack’s Minecraft and loader versions. Complete the initial launch, accept the EULA, and stop the server before copying pack files. This gives you a known loader installation instead of combining a client launcher profile with an unrelated server jar.
Copy the pack’s server-relevant files
- Open the client pack archive or its installed profile and locate the
mods,config,defaultconfigs, scripts, datapacks, and other content supplied by the pack. - Copy the configuration and content folders into the server directory, preserving their names and relative paths.
- Copy the mod jars into the server’s
modsdirectory. - Use the pack’s
manifest.jsonto verify the intended Minecraft version, loader, and mod file list. - Remove mods that are explicitly client-only, such as features that provide only a graphical interface, local key controls, or rendering enhancements. If a mod’s documentation does not identify its side, test it and remove it only when the server log shows that it cannot run on a dedicated server.
- Start the server and resolve missing dependencies one at a time. Do not download random “latest” versions; use the versions associated with the selected pack release.
Client-only removal is the main risk in this method. Removing a mod that actually supplies gameplay content can make the server and clients disagree, while leaving a rendering-only mod can stop the server during class loading. Keep a written list of every change so you can reproduce the installation for another administrator or a later backup.

Many Minecraft hosts provide a built-in CurseForge installer. In a panel’s Modpacks tab, you may be able to search for the pack or paste its CurseForge link, select the release and loader, and let the panel download and configure the instance.
- Back up the existing world and server files.
- Open the host’s Modpacks installer.
- Select the exact CurseForge project and release, not just the project’s current default.
- Confirm the Minecraft version, loader, and Java selection shown by the panel.
- Run the installation or reinstall operation.
- Review the generated startup entry, EULA state, memory setting, and file list before starting.
One-click installation saves upload time but does not remove compatibility checks. If the panel offers only a different loader or a newer release than the one your players installed, stop and align the client profiles first.

Troubleshooting common startup and connection failures
The server exits immediately
Read the first exception in the console rather than the final “server stopped” line. Check that the Java runtime selected in the panel is supported by the Minecraft and loader versions, that the loader was installed in the directory being started, and that the startup entry is not vanilla minecraft_server.jar. Restore the original server-pack archive if you accidentally replaced loader files with a second installation.
Missing mod or dependency errors
Compare the server’s mods directory with the exact pack release. A client download may omit a server dependency, or a manual installation may contain the wrong build. Add the required dependency at the version associated with the pack and restart; do not solve the error by copying an unrelated mod from another Minecraft version.
Players receive a mod-list or registry mismatch
Confirm that the server and every client use the same pack release, loader, and Minecraft version. Check for an extra jar in the server’s mods directory or a client-side update that was not applied to the server. If you intentionally changed a mod, distribute the complete tested set to all players rather than asking them to guess which file differs.
The server hangs during world loading
Allow extra time on the first start while libraries and generated files are created, but inspect the console for a repeating error or a stalled mod initialization step. Verify memory allocation, remove only the mod named in the error, and restore the previous backup if the world or configuration was changed during an unsuccessful attempt.
The server starts but a feature is missing
Check whether the feature’s mod or configuration was omitted during a manual installation. Compare config, defaultconfigs, scripts, datapacks, and the mod list with the server-pack archive. A successful world-load message confirms that the process started; it does not confirm that every optional pack feature was copied.
Updating, backing up, and changing a pack safely
Handle a modpack update as a separate deployment. Record the currently running pack release, stop the server, back up the world and configuration, and download the new release’s server files if available. Do not overwrite only the mods folder while keeping an older configuration unless the pack author’s instructions explicitly call for that process.
For a major Minecraft or loader change, create a new server directory and test a copy of the world first. Keep the old directory untouched until players have connected successfully and you have confirmed that dimensions, inventories, scripts, and permissions work. Never test an unverified update on the only copy of an established world.
