To install a custom car on an Assetto Corsa server, put the author’s original car archive on the server, preserve its internal folder structure, add the detected model to the active entry list, assign skins and enough slots, select a compatible track, apply the configuration, and restart. Every driver must install the identical car release locally. A different archive, missing skin, changed folder, or incompatible required extension can produce a checksum error even when the car’s displayed name is unchanged.
You can do this through a managed hosting panel or by running your own AssettoServer instance. The panel is simpler and may generate Content Manager download manifests; self-hosting gives you direct control over files and configuration. The procedures below cover both routes, including Content Manager’s optional missing-content links and the most common join failures.
What has to match before anyone can join
Assetto Corsa verifies the car content presented by the server against the files installed by each client. The important match is not merely the model name shown in a list. It is the actual release, folder name, data files, meshes, textures, physics, and skins used by the entry.
- Use one exact release: record the archive version or release date you install and distribute that same archive to every driver.
- Keep the original structure: the car’s folder belongs under
content/cars; do not flatten nested folders, rename the model directory, or remove files. - Match skins: a server entry references a skin folder. The client needs that skin in the same car installation.
- Meet feature requirements: a server using a required Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) feature must be joined with a compatible CSP and Content Manager version.
- Have an available entry: a driver still needs a free player slot assigned to the car and skin.
Automatic downloading can help a client obtain a missing archive, but it cannot turn two different releases into the same release or repair a damaged download.

Choose a managed panel or self-hosted AssettoServer
AssettoServer is an open-source custom game server for Assetto Corsa developed with freeroam in mind. Its version 0.0.55 introduction, updated March 23, 2026, documents Windows and Linux packages and supports either a dedicated server folder or integration with Content Manager.

Whichever route you choose, obtain the car from its author or an authorized distribution source. Do not re-upload an archive unless its author explicitly permits redistribution.
Prepare and verify the car archive
Do this before changing the server entry list. A malformed archive is easier to fix at the source than after it has been partially installed.
- Download the author’s original archive. Keep the ZIP, RAR, or 7Z file unchanged and note its exact release, version field, or publication date.
- Check the top-level folder. A normal car package contains a model folder intended for
content/cars, with the car’s data and graphics files beneath it. Do not move files out of that hierarchy. - Inspect the package for completeness. If extraction reports errors, files are missing, or the archive contains only part of the mod, download it again from the author instead of trying to reconstruct it.
- Identify available skins. Record the skin-directory names you intend to use. Those names are what the entry list must reference.
- Check dependencies. Read the author’s notes for required CSP features or official downloadable content. A server cannot grant DLC ownership to a driver who does not own it.
Do not rename internal data files or the model folder to make it look tidier. The folder name is used by the entry list and by the client’s installed content; changing it on one side creates a mismatch.

Install through a managed hosting panel
The following sequence reflects the workflow documented by Assetto Servers for custom-car hosting. Labels can vary slightly by provider, but the order matters because the panel must finish processing the archive before the model can be selected.
Upload and process the archive
- Open the server’s Content page.
- Upload the original ZIP, RAR, or 7Z car archive. Do not upload a manually flattened folder when the panel accepts the original archive.
- Wait until metadata processing finishes. The car may not appear in the picker while processing is still running.
- Confirm that the detected car count increases and that the model appears as a selectable car.
Build the active entry list
- Add the recognized model to Current Entry List.
- Set the number of player entries. Use enough entries for the drivers you expect; an entry that is not present cannot be selected at join time.
- Assign one or more skins, using the skin names provided by the archive.
- Choose the track and, where applicable, the track layout. The selected track must also be installed and available to the server.
- Click Apply Selection and wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart the server after the selection has been applied. A restart is required when the panel still shows an older car list or entry configuration.
Test the server with the same car archive installed locally. If the car picker remains empty, return to archive processing rather than repeatedly applying an incomplete entry list.
Install with a self-managed AssettoServer
Keep the server outside the Assetto Corsa installation
AssettoServer’s introduction warns not to extract the server into the Assetto Corsa game folder because of Steam SDK conflicts. Use a separate server directory with its own configuration and content tree.

- Dedicated setup: create the server configuration in Content Manager, click Pack, and extract the resulting archive into the server root.
- Content Manager integration: rename the original
acServer.exe, place AssettoServer in the server directory, then renameAssettoServer.exetoacServer.exeso the existing integration launches it.
Follow one method consistently. Mixing files from separate server roots makes it difficult to know which configuration and content the running process is actually using.
Copy the car into the server content tree
- Stop the server process before changing content.
- Place the car’s model folder under
content/carsin the server root. - Preserve the expected folder name and all files from the author’s archive.
- Confirm that the track and layout you plan to use are present in the server’s content as well.
Reference the model and skin in entry_list.ini
The file cfg/entry_list.ini defines each car’s model, skin, and related AI-slot settings. A minimal entry has this shape:

Use the actual folder names, not the car’s marketing name. Keep entry indices contiguous (for example, CAR_0, CAR_1, CAR_2) and add enough entries for the intended player count. If you use AI slots, retain the additional settings required by your server configuration rather than deleting them while adding the model.
Save the file, verify the selected track and layout in the server configuration, and restart AssettoServer. Review the startup log for a successful car and track load before asking drivers to connect.

Install the identical car for every driver
- Give drivers the author’s original archive and the exact release identifier you recorded.
- Have each driver install it in the local Assetto Corsa or Content Manager content library without changing the model folder.
- Ensure each client has the skin named by the server entry and any required CSP feature enabled.
- Ask one driver to join while the server is running the new entry list. If that test succeeds, test a second client before opening the server publicly.
A checksum error means the client’s car content does not match what the server is advertising. Reinstall the exact archive on both sides, compare extracted folders and skins, and remove older copies that use a different model directory. Changing only the display name or enabling automatic download does not solve a release mismatch.
Offer Content Manager downloads (optional)
AssettoServer can publish missing-car and missing-track links through cfg/cm_content/content.json. Content Manager reads this manifest when the server advertises its details, allowing a player to follow a download link before joining.
Create a valid manifest
For each car or track, provide the author’s download URL and, when one exists, the version shown in Content Manager’s Author field. Omit the version property when the mod has no version value. Use the links supplied by the content authors unless you have explicit permission to re-upload the files yourself.
Enable server details in extra_cfg.yml:
EnableServerDetails: trueAfter editing the manifest, verify that the JSON is valid and that every URL points to a complete, downloadable archive. A link to an expired page or an incomplete file leaves the player with the same missing-content problem.

Configure CM Auto Download in a hosting panel
- Select at least one car in the active entry list.
- Select a track and layout.
- Enable CM Auto Download.
- Click Apply Selection and wait for processing.
- Inspect
cfg/cm_content/content.jsonto confirm that the expected car, track, version (when applicable), and source URL were written. - Restart the server.
- From a computer that does not already have the mod installed, open the server’s Join in CM link and test the complete download-and-join path.
Rebuild the manifest whenever you change a car archive, car list, track, layout, or source URL. A stale manifest can continue offering an old release even after the server has been updated.

These versions apply to specific AssettoServer features rather than to every basic custom-car server:

Official DLC is a separate matter from a community car archive. If the custom car or track requires DLC, every participating account must own that DLC.

Pre-launch checklist
- The server uses a separate, known AssettoServer root and the intended configuration.
- The original car archive was recorded and installed without flattening or renaming its internal structure.
- The model appears in the server content and in the active entry list.
- Each entry has a valid skin, sufficient player slots, and a compatible track/layout.
- The server and every client use the same car release and extracted folders.
- Any CSP, Content Manager, or DLC dependency is documented for drivers.
- If downloads are offered,
EnableServerDetails: trueis set, the manifest URLs are authorized and complete, and the clean-client Join in CM test succeeds. - The server was restarted after applying the final selection or changing the manifest.
