The safest way to install a ColorOS update on a OnePlus phone is to use the update offered by the phone’s own software updater—only when OnePlus has made that release available for your exact model and region. Back up important data, connect to a reliable network, maintain adequate battery, and let the installation finish without pressing buttons or shutting the phone down.
ColorOS is not a universal package for every OnePlus phone. Eligibility depends on the model, country or region, carrier, and the particular release. A package intended for another OnePlus model, market, or beta program can fail or create compatibility problems, so do not use an arbitrary download to bypass a staged rollout.
Can you update your OnePlus phone to ColorOS?
Only if OnePlus has officially included your device in an eligible ColorOS release for your market. OnePlus software availability is model-, country-, region-, and sometimes carrier-specific. A ColorOS announcement for one phone does not establish eligibility for every OnePlus device, and an India-only beta does not automatically apply to phones sold elsewhere.
OnePlus has also described a conditional path in its US business-adjustment notice: existing devices within an eligible upgrade scope may voluntarily update to ColorOS after its official release. That notice says users who update will have an option to roll back to OxygenOS, but the exact rollback versions depend on later official announcements. Treat that information as time-sensitive; confirm that your model and region are still covered and read the current instructions before changing software.

Before downloading anything, identify three details:
- The exact model name and variant shown in Settings > About device.
- The current OxygenOS version and build number.
- The country or region where the phone is being used, plus the carrier if it is a carrier-sold model.
Check the update notice displayed on the phone and the current OnePlus support information for that exact combination. Rollouts can be released in batches, so two identical phones in different countries—or on different carriers—may receive the same update at different times.
Prepare the phone before installing
A few minutes of preparation reduces the chance of data loss or an interrupted installation. Complete these checks before selecting Install.

OnePlus recommends backing up your important data before a software update. The ColorOS 17 open-beta notice repeats that advice even though that particular beta is designed not to clear user data. A beta’s stated design is not a substitute for a backup: preserve photos, contacts, messages, authenticator information, documents, and any app data that would be difficult to recreate.
Use the backup method you already trust—such as your normal cloud or computer backup—and verify that it completed. Keep the backup available until you have restarted the phone and confirmed that your essential data and apps work.
Provide power and free storage
General OnePlus software-update support advises plugging in the phone or keeping the battery above 60 percent. It also advises using a stable network. The OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 open beta has narrower, release-specific requirements: battery above 30 percent and at least 4 GB of free storage. Those figures apply to that India beta notice, not every ColorOS or OxygenOS update.

For a normal stable update, follow the threshold shown by your phone’s updater and connect the charger if there is any doubt. Free enough internal storage for the download and installation; if the updater reports a required amount, treat that value as authoritative for your build.
Use a reliable connection
Download over stable Wi-Fi when possible. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual recommends Wi-Fi for downloading an update. A reliable mobile-data connection can be appropriate when the updater permits it, but avoid starting a large download while moving between weak signals or switching networks.
Plan uninterrupted installation time
Do not begin immediately before a meeting, flight, or other situation in which you might need the phone. Installation can include reboots and background optimization. Slight warmth can be normal during installation, but do not place the phone where heat cannot dissipate.
Install through the phone’s official updater (recommended)
The over-the-air (OTA) route is the default for most owners because the phone checks the release against its software channel and presents the applicable instructions. Menu wording varies by OxygenOS version, so use the path that appears on your device.
- Open the update screen. Depending on the software version, go to Settings > System & update > Software Update or Settings > System & update > System Update. Some OnePlus manuals instead describe Settings > About device, then tapping the version number or the Official version widget.
- Read the release information. Confirm that the notice names your model and the intended region or channel. Check whether it identifies the build as stable, open beta, or another preview. Do not proceed if the package description belongs to a different model.
- Finish the preparation checks. Confirm the backup, battery or charger, network, and available storage. If the updater requires a different threshold, follow its on-screen requirement rather than a generic figure.
- Start the download. Keep the connection stable until it completes. Avoid repeatedly cancelling and restarting a large download on an unreliable network.
- Start installation when prompted. Close anything you do not want interrupted and accept the restart prompt. During installation, do not press the Power button, operate the phone, or attempt to force a shutdown.
- Wait for the phone to finish. Reboots, a progress screen, and temporary warmth can occur. Leave the phone connected to power and untouched until the normal lock screen or setup screen returns.
- Verify the result. After the phone starts, return to Settings > About device and confirm the new version. Open a few essential apps, check mobile service and Wi-Fi, and make sure critical data is present.
OnePlus’s manual gives the same operational warning in substance: use Wi-Fi for the download, do not touch the Power button or perform other operations during the update, and wait for completion. Interrupting an installation is a greater risk than a brief delay in applying it.
Why the menu path may look different
OnePlus has used more than one label for the same updater function. The following paths are documented examples, not a guarantee that every model uses the same wording.

If a label is missing, do not assume the feature was removed or substitute a menu from a different model’s guide. Search the current manual for your exact device or contact OnePlus support.
Manual installation: when it is appropriate and how to reduce the risk
Manual installation is a conditional option, not a workaround for an unavailable rollout. It can make sense when OnePlus has published a package and device-specific local-install instructions for your exact model, region, and software channel. The package source, model match, and instructions must all be official.
Use only a matching official package
- Confirm the model and regional variant in the package description, not just the product family name.
- Confirm whether the package is stable, beta, or intended for another testing channel.
- Obtain it through an official OnePlus channel. Do not rely on third-party firmware mirrors, modified archives, or a file shared for a different model.
- Read the model’s current manual for prerequisites, storage requirements, and the exact local-install procedure.
A file that has a similar name can still be incompatible. Do not rename, modify, extract, or combine packages unless the official instructions explicitly require it; the available instructions do not establish a general recovery method for arbitrary files.

The OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual describes this sequence: Settings > About device > Official version widget > menu > Local install. Select the official package only after confirming that it is for your phone and region, then follow the prompts exactly. Other models can use different labels or restrict local installation, so do not treat this path as universal.
Apply the same preparation rules as an OTA update: back up data, use adequate power, keep a stable connection if the package still needs to be downloaded, and leave enough storage for the installation. Once installation starts, do not operate or power off the phone.
When not to use manual installation
- The update is not listed for your model or country.
- You found the file on an unofficial mirror or in a forum post without an official device match.
- You are trying to bypass a staged rollout or carrier approval.
- You cannot confirm whether the build is stable or pre-release.
- The current manual for your phone does not document local installation.
In those cases, wait for the official rollout or ask OnePlus support. Installing an unrelated package is not a safe solution to an update that has not reached your phone.

Stable ColorOS release versus ColorOS beta
A beta is not simply an early delivery of the same risk-free update. It is pre-release software offered to people who knowingly accept compatibility and performance issues.

What the OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 beta notice covers
The cited ColorOS 17 open-beta announcement is specifically for the OnePlus 13 in India. It requires a battery above 30 percent and at least 4 GB of free storage, and it tells participants to back up their data. The notice also warns that some third-party apps may be incompatible. Temporary heating, lag, and higher power consumption can occur while background optimization runs.
Those requirements and effects should not be generalized to every OnePlus phone or every country. If your phone is not the India OnePlus 13 covered by that announcement, do not enroll on the assumption that the same package applies.
Decide whether a beta fits your goal
Choose a beta only if you want to test unreleased software and can tolerate app failures, reduced battery life, performance changes, and support limitations. A reader who simply wants a stable ColorOS update should wait for the official stable channel and use the built-in updater. What to do when the ColorOS update is not showing
An absent update does not prove that your phone is ineligible, and it is not a reason to install a random package. OnePlus says rollout timing can vary by device, country, and carrier, with releases delivered in batches.

- Recheck identity and region. Confirm the exact model, current build, country, and carrier. Make sure you are checking the support information for that combination.
- Install any prerequisite official update. If the updater offers an intermediate release, apply it through the normal OTA route before expecting a later platform change.
- Check again on a stable connection. Open the software-update screen after connecting to reliable Wi-Fi or another dependable network.
- Allow for staged rollout timing. A friend’s phone or a screenshot online is not proof that your device should already have the package.
- Contact OnePlus support if the official window has passed. Provide the model, region, current build, and the exact message shown by the updater.
Do not unlock the installation path with a package from another model, country, carrier, or beta channel. That can create a problem that would not have existed if you had waited for the eligible release.

What to do if installation fails
If the updater reports a failure, freezes at an error screen, or repeatedly refuses a package, stop trying random files and preserve the phone’s current state.
- Do not force repeated installations from unofficial packages.
- If the phone still starts, back up your data immediately.
- Record the model, current software version, package name shown by the updater, and any error message.
- Contact an official OnePlus service center or OnePlus support for model-specific assistance.
The OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual’s documented escalation is to back up the phone’s data and go to an official service center if an update fails. It does not establish a universal button combination, sideloading command, or factory-reset procedure, so do not improvise one from instructions written for another model.
