Treat AI-generated JavaScript as untrusted input. Read the complete source and its dependency graph, identify the exact capabilities the task needs, then run it in a disposable process, container, VM, or microVM with no ambient secrets and only narrowly granted permissions. Static inspection can expose suspicious behavior, but it cannot prove that every runtime path is safe. A JavaScript context such as Node.js node:vm is not, by itself, a security boundary.
What sandboxing is—and what it is not
Sandboxing limits what a program can do if it is buggy, compromised, or deliberately malicious. For generated JavaScript, the relevant assets are usually your files, environment variables, credentials, network access, source repositories, operating-system interfaces, and the host itself.
Inspection and isolation solve different problems:
- Inspection is a reasoning task. You read the entry point, imports, package scripts, and data flow to predict behavior.
- Permission restriction removes capabilities the program does not need, such as broad filesystem or network access.
- Isolation puts execution behind an operating-system, container, virtual-machine, or hypervisor boundary so a runtime escape does not immediately expose the host.
- Observation records what the program attempted and changed, allowing you to reject suspicious output instead of trusting a successful exit code.
None of these is a proof of safety. A program can hide behavior in a dependency, take a code path your test did not exercise, or exploit a vulnerability in the runtime or isolation layer. Use several layers.

- Save the response as text. Put it in a disposable project or a review-only directory. Do not paste production credentials, private keys, customer data, or an entire home directory into the project.
- Record the intended job. Write down the input files, output format, permitted destinations, and whether network access is genuinely required. This becomes your least-privilege checklist.
- Separate review from execution. Open the source in an editor or plain-text viewer. Do not install packages or run lifecycle scripts merely to inspect them.
- Pin the artifact. Preserve the exact generated files and dependency lockfile you reviewed. If the code changes, repeat the review.
2. Read the complete code and dependency graph
Start at every entry point
Read the main script, imported modules, package metadata, and scripts such as preinstall, install, postinstall, prepare, and custom build commands. A harmless-looking entry point can trigger code before your function runs.

Search for capability requests
Use these as review prompts, not as an exhaustive malware detector:
eval, new Function, dynamicimport(), WebAssembly loading, or code assembled from strings.- Process and shell interfaces such as Node’s process-spawning APIs, command interpreters, and child-process wrappers.
- Filesystem reads and writes, directory traversal, archive extraction, symlink handling, and deletion.
- Network clients, raw sockets, DNS lookups, remote module imports, webhooks, and upload code.
- Environment-variable access, token files, cloud metadata endpoints, SSH material, browser profiles, and credential stores.
- Persistence mechanisms such as startup files, scheduled jobs, modified package scripts, hidden caches, or changes outside the project directory.
- Obfuscation, encoded blobs, unexpectedly minified code, large generated sections unrelated to the task, or comments that do not match the implementation.
Trace data and control flow
Ask what values cross trust boundaries. A transformation script that receives one JSON fixture should not need a shell, arbitrary URL fetching, or access to the user’s home directory. Check error paths as well as the happy path: cleanup handlers, retries, fallback imports, and logging code often perform additional I/O.
Review every dependency
Prefer a small, known dependency set and a committed lockfile. Inspect package names, versions, install scripts, transitive dependencies, and any remote or URL-based imports. A lockfile makes resolution reproducible; it does not prove that each package is trustworthy or free of vulnerabilities. Runtime permission controls also do not replace dependency vulnerability auditing.

| Task need | Minimum useful grant | Do not grant by default |
|---|---|---|
| Pure calculation or text transformation | No filesystem, network, subprocess, or environment access | Home-directory mounts, ambient environment variables, package installation |
| Read a fixture | Read-only access to one disposable input directory | Write access, parent-directory traversal, device files |
| Write a result | Write-only access to a fresh output directory | Overwriting source, configuration, or user files |
| Call an API | Outbound access to named hosts and required ports, with test credentials or none | Unrestricted internet, inbound listeners, production tokens |
| Compile or invoke a tool | A dedicated tool image with fixed binaries and strict limits | General shell access, package managers, host sockets |
If you cannot describe a capability in one sentence, do not grant it yet. For networked tasks, use a test endpoint and credentials scoped to that endpoint. For secret-dependent tasks, inject a short-lived, narrowly scoped secret only inside the isolated run; never expose your normal shell environment.
4. Choose an execution boundary that matches the risk
Why Node.js node:vm is not enough
Node’s official documentation states: “The node:vm module is not a security mechanism. Do not use it to run untrusted code.” It creates a separate V8 context, but that context is not an operating-system boundary. Do not treat it as protection for a host containing secrets or sensitive files.
Why a worker is only one layer
A reduced-permission worker can help organize a job and limit the APIs you expose. It does not automatically change the process’s privilege level. Code on the same thread or within the same privilege domain can still reach whatever that domain can reach. Use workers alongside, not instead of, a stronger boundary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNode’s Permission Model is a seat belt, not a hostile-code barrier
Node documents its Permission Model as a safety aid for trusted code and warns that malicious code can bypass it. It can reduce accidental access, but it should not be your only defense when the input may be hostile.

Process, container, VM, and microVM options
| Approach | Filesystem and secrets | Network and loading | Native or subprocess risk | Limits and auditability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Language context such as node:vm |
Often shares process resources unless carefully wrapped | Not a complete import or network boundary | Host APIs may remain reachable | Weak isolation; limited independent cleanup | Testing trusted snippets, not untrusted code |
| Worker with reduced permissions | Depends on the parent process and runtime policy | Can narrow exposed APIs | Still shares the broader privilege domain | Useful logs and cancellation, but not a host boundary | One layer inside a larger design |
| Disposable process or container | Use no sensitive mounts and a dedicated user | Disable or allowlist egress; pin code loading | Drop privileges and remove unnecessary tools | Apply CPU, memory, disk, and time limits; capture logs | Routine untrusted jobs with a hardened host |
| VM or microVM | Strong separation when configured without secret mounts | Explicit egress policy and controlled imports | Additional barrier against runtime escapes | Ephemeral disks, quotas, snapshots, and centralized audit | Higher-risk or multi-tenant execution |
Deno’s security guidance recommends layered defenses: restricted permissions, reduced-permission workers where useful, and OS mechanisms such as chroot, cgroups, and seccomp, or a VM/microVM for arbitrary untrusted code. The exact configuration depends on your operating system and workload; a container with a privileged host socket or broad mounts is not a meaningful sandbox.
5. Apply Deno’s default-deny permissions when Deno is the runtime
Deno denies most sensitive system I/O unless you grant it. Start with no permissions and add only the paths and hosts the policy requires. For example, a read-only fixture run can be structured as:
deno run --deny-all --allow-read=./fixtures/input.json script.ts
If a task must contact one service, add only that destination rather than broad network access:
deno run --deny-all --allow-read=./fixtures --allow-net=api.example.com script.ts
These examples illustrate the policy shape; verify the flags against the Deno version you deploy. Keep module loading constrained. Deno documents --frozen and --cached-only as ways to prevent resolution from changing or fetching additional code in the relevant workflow:

deno run --frozen --cached-only --deny-all script.ts
Enable permission audit logging and retain the log with the run record. A denied access is useful evidence: either the policy is too narrow for the declared job or the program attempted an undeclared capability. Permission control does not scan dependencies for known vulnerabilities, so perform dependency auditing separately.
6. Build the disposable runtime
- Use a fresh identity. Run as a non-root, non-administrator account with no access to personal files, SSH agents, cloud credentials, container sockets, or host devices.
- Mount only fixtures. Prefer read-only input and a separate output directory. Do not mount the source tree’s parent, the home directory, or production configuration.
- Control code loading. Use the reviewed lockfile and cached modules. Disable package installation and remote imports unless they are an explicit, allowlisted requirement.
- Set resource ceilings. Bound wall-clock time, CPU, memory, process count, output size, and temporary disk. These limits reduce denial-of-service impact from infinite loops, fork storms, decompression bombs, or huge generated files.
- Set network policy. Prefer no outbound network. If required, allowlist destinations and ports, block inbound connections, and log DNS and connection attempts.
- Make state ephemeral. Destroy the process and disposable filesystem after collecting the evidence you need. Reuse neither the writable layer nor credentials for a later job.
7. Run once, observe everything, then inspect the result
Capture standard output, standard error, exit status, start and end times, resource consumption, permission denials, attempted network destinations, loaded modules, and files created or modified. Keep the generated source, lockfile, policy, runtime version, and logs together so another reviewer can reproduce the decision.
A normal exit means only that the tested path completed. Before using the output elsewhere, inspect:

- Every file created, including hidden files and changes to metadata.
- Network destinations and payloads, especially uploads that were not part of the task.
- Dependency or lockfile changes and any newly downloaded code.
- Output for embedded scripts, unexpected links, secrets, or data copied from the input.
- Resource behavior: a job that finishes after exhausting its limits may still be unsafe to repeat.
Destroy the writable sandbox, revoke temporary credentials, and preserve only the review record and approved output. If the program attempted an undeclared action, stop and investigate rather than widening permissions automatically.

8. Recognize common failure modes
The script needs one file but requests the whole home directory
Move the needed file into a fixture directory and grant read access only to that path. If the code cannot work without broad access, rewrite it or reject it; convenience is not a security requirement.
A dependency fetches code during execution
Pin and prefetch the reviewed dependency set, then run in cached-only or equivalent offline mode. If a remote import is essential, allowlist its exact origin, record the retrieved artifact, and review it as code.
The job fails after permissions are denied
Use the audit log to identify the denied operation. Decide whether it is genuinely required by the written task. Grant the smallest additional path or host, rerun in a fresh sandbox, and record the policy change.

Someone proposes wrapping the code in node:vm
Reject that as the sole control. Keep the context only as an organizational layer inside a process, container, or VM boundary that has no sensitive mounts and has strict resource and network controls.
The result looks correct, so the code is trusted
Correct output is not a security verdict. Review side effects and logs, then use a fresh sandbox for any subsequent run with newly generated code or changed dependencies.
9. Put browser-targeted code in a separate threat model
Browser iframes and Web Workers have browser-specific origin, messaging, and permission behavior. Do not assume that a token such as an iframe sandbox attribute or the use of a worker automatically provides the isolation you need. Check the current documentation for the browser, origin model, and APIs in question, and keep browser execution separate from server-side access to credentials and local files.
10. What the vm2 history teaches
A 2023 USENIX Security Symposium study, SandDriller, catalogued 15 known vm2 breakouts and reported zero unfixed at the time of its study. Its npm download snapshot was dated 2022-10-09. That table is a historical study result, not a current vulnerability count and not a guarantee that a patched release is safe for every threat model. The practical lesson is to avoid treating a JavaScript-only wrapper as equivalent to an operating-system or hypervisor boundary.

A compact pre-run checklist
- The exact source, imports, package scripts, and lockfile have been read.
- Dynamic code loading, shell calls, filesystem, network, environment, persistence, and obfuscation have been examined.
- The task’s required capabilities are written down and all others are denied.
- No production secrets, personal files, host sockets, or broad mounts are present.
- Dependencies are pinned, reviewed, and loaded from an approved cache where possible.
- Execution occurs in a disposable process, container, VM, or microVM—not only a language context.
- CPU, memory, process, disk, time, and output limits are active.
- Network access is disabled or explicitly allowlisted and logged.
- Logs, exit status, permission events, files, and destinations are captured.
- The sandbox and temporary credentials will be destroyed after review.
