The quickest route depends on what you need to know: use View Page Source for the document originally delivered, Elements (Chrome) or Page Inspector (Firefox) for the page as it is currently represented, Sources to browse files the browser made available, and Network to see the requests and responses that actually occurred. These are different views, not interchangeable names for one tool.
Choose the browser view that answers your question
A modern page can have at least three relevant states: the HTML response that arrived first, the live document after scripts and user actions changed it, and the collection of resources requested during the session. Choosing the wrong panel is the main reason a source-code inspection seems contradictory.
| Question | Use this view | What it shows | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| What HTML document did the server initially deliver? | View Page Source | The source document, with syntax highlighting and links to lines in browsers that provide those features. | It is not a live view of later DOM changes. Firefox says its error highlighting covers parsing errors, not every HTML validity error. |
| What element exists now, and which styles affect it? | Elements in Chrome or Page Inspector in Firefox | The current DOM, layout, and CSS rules as represented in the browser. | The view reflects this browser session after scripts, interactions, and state changes. |
| Which page files can I open? | Sources in Chrome | Resources grouped by page or domain, including stylesheets and scripts that the page made available to DevTools; images can be previewed. | A browser-facing list is not a directory listing of every file stored on the site’s server. |
| Which files were actually requested, and what did they return? | Network | Requests, resource type, headers, response, initiator, and timing. | Chrome records activity while DevTools is open, so an earlier load may not be in the log. |
If a script inserts a product list, changes a class, or fetches JSON after the initial response, do not expect View Page Source to contain the final result. Inspect the live element in Elements or Inspector, then use Network to identify the request that supplied new data.

Chrome
- Right-click the element you want to investigate and choose Inspect. DevTools opens with that node selected in Elements.
- If you need the full tool rather than a particular element, open Chrome’s developer-tools command from the browser menu. Menu names and keyboard shortcuts can change between versions, so the menu is the reliable fallback.
- To read the original document instead, use the page context menu’s View page source command. This opens the source in a separate browser view rather than the live DevTools DOM.
Firefox
- Right-click a page element and choose Inspect to open Page Inspector with that node selected.
- Firefox documents
F12orCtrl+Shift+Ion Windows and Linux, andCmd+Option+Ion macOS, for opening developer tools. - Use the browser’s View Page Source command when you need the delivered document. If a shortcut or menu label differs in your release, use the menu rather than relying on an old shortcut list.
Developer tools are built into these browsers; no extension or separate purchase is required. You can dock DevTools to the side, bottom, or a separate window. Docking changes only the workspace, not what the page requests.

Read the original HTML with View Page Source
View Page Source is the right first stop for questions such as “What markup was sent in the initial response?” or “Is this metadata present in the document at all?” Search within the source for a title, heading, link, form field, script reference, or stylesheet reference. Use the line links and syntax coloring when your browser provides them.
What this view is good for
- Finding the initial document structure and text that arrived before client-side changes.
- Locating references to external stylesheets, scripts, images, and other resources.
- Checking whether an element or metadata field was server-rendered rather than added later.
- Comparing the delivered markup with what you eventually see in the live page.
What it cannot prove
Source view does not become a complete audit of the site’s backend. It exposes the response delivered to your browser, not server-side templates, databases, private files, or code that never ran in the client. It also is not a complete HTML validator. Mozilla Firefox Source Docs states: “View Source only reports parsing errors, not HTML validity errors.” Treat a clean source view as evidence about parsing, not certification that the markup meets every conformance rule.
When a page is generated or modified after load, the same text may be absent from View Page Source but present in Elements. That difference is expected: one panel preserves the original response, while the other represents the current document.

Inspect the current DOM and CSS
Use Elements in Chrome or Page Inspector in Firefox when your question concerns what the browser is displaying now: a visible button, an unexpected wrapper, a hidden panel, a class added by a script, or the rule responsible for a color or spacing value.

Select the element
- Open DevTools and activate the element picker, or start by right-clicking the element and selecting Inspect.
- Move through the DOM tree to understand the selected node’s parent, children, attributes, and position in the document.
- Check the styles view for declarations affecting the node. Use the rule’s location information to see which stylesheet supplied it when the browser exposes that detail.
- Expand neighboring nodes if the visible result is produced by a wrapper, pseudo-element, or nested child rather than the node you first selected.
Use the live view for dynamic pages
Click a menu, submit a form, open a modal, or wait for content to load, then inspect the result. The DOM shown in Elements or Inspector is the state after those actions. This makes it the appropriate place to answer “Why is this element here now?” It also explains why copying a snippet from the live DOM may not reproduce the initial server response.
Changes made in DevTools are useful for diagnosis and experimentation in your session. They do not automatically edit the website for other visitors or change the site’s server files. Reloading normally discards such temporary edits unless you have separately configured a persistence feature.
Browse available files in Chrome Sources
When you need to open a stylesheet, script, or image rather than inspect a single node, open Sources. In the Sources page pane, choose Page and browse the resources grouped by page or domain. Select a resource to open it in the editor; image files can be previewed.

Find a stylesheet or script
- Open DevTools and select Sources.
- In the left-hand Page tree, expand the relevant page or domain.
- Open the stylesheet or script that appears in the tree and use the editor’s search facility to locate a selector, function name, URL, or text fragment.
- Return to Elements to connect a rule or script reference with the node you are examining.
The Page tab lists stylesheets that are loaded or deployed for the page as exposed to DevTools. Do not describe this as a complete inventory of the web server. A file that exists on a server but was never referenced or requested may not appear, and a resource can also be generated, redirected, or supplied by another origin.

Preview images and identify their origin
Opening an image resource in Sources lets you preview what the browser received. To understand how it was fetched, select the corresponding request in Network as well; Sources answers “Can I open this resource in the page’s file view?” while Network answers “What request delivered it, from where, and when?”
Use Network to see actual requests
Network is the evidence panel for resource activity. It can show document, stylesheet, script, image, font, and data requests along with details for a selected item. Chrome’s documentation says network activity is logged only while DevTools is open, so open Network before reloading.
- Open DevTools and select Network.
- Reload the page. The resulting activity is recorded in the request list.
- Filter or sort the list by the resource type relevant to your question.
- Select a request and inspect its Headers, Response, Initiator, and Timing information.
- Record the request URL, status information shown by the browser, and the relationship between the initiator and the resource before drawing conclusions.
What the main details mean
- Headers show request and response metadata exposed by the browser, such as content information and caching-related fields.
- Response shows the payload the browser received when it is available for inspection.
- Initiator helps connect a request to the document, script, stylesheet, or other action that caused it.
- Timing breaks the request into stages so you can see where this particular transaction spent time.
Network is not limited to files visible as static links in the initial HTML. A script can request JSON or another resource after a click, scroll, timer, or form submission. Those requests appear only when the action occurs while the panel is recording.

- Open Network and clear the existing log if you need an unambiguous before-and-after comparison.
- Reload while Network is open so the initial requests are recorded.
- Perform exactly one interaction, such as clicking a button that expands a list.
- Look for the new request generated by that action. The response may be JSON or another data format.
- Select it and read the response, initiator, headers, and timing details.
- Inspect the newly visible element in Elements or Page Inspector and compare its current DOM with the original source.
Chrome’s Network tutorial demonstrates this pattern with a button that causes a new JSON request. The important practice is to correlate one user action with one new request rather than assuming every visible change came from the original HTML.
Match common tasks to the right panel
| If you want to… | Start here | Then use |
|---|---|---|
| Find the initial heading or metadata | View Page Source | Elements, if the text may have been inserted or changed after load. |
| Find which CSS rule controls a visible element | Elements or Page Inspector | Sources to open the referenced stylesheet. |
| Open a page script or image | Sources | Network to confirm the request and response details. |
| Discover data fetched after a click | Network open before the action | Elements to inspect the resulting DOM. |
| Understand why a resource is slow | Network for that request’s timing | Lighthouse for broader load-performance guidance. |
| Check whether the browser requested a file at all | Network | Sources, if you also want to open the available resource. |
Troubleshoot an apparently missing file or element
The item is in Elements but not in View Source
The page was probably changed after the initial response. Keep the live DOM as your evidence for the current state and use Network to find a script or data request associated with the change.
The item is in View Source but not in Elements
The browser may have removed it, replaced it, hidden it, or failed to create the expected structure after parsing or script execution. Inspect nearby nodes and check for parsing errors. Remember that source-view error reporting is not the same as full HTML validity checking.
The stylesheet is referenced but does not appear in the expected place
Check Network while reloading. A failed, redirected, blocked, or conditionally loaded request can explain why a reference in the document does not produce the expected live style. Then inspect the node in Elements to see which declarations actually apply.

The request is missing from Network
Reload with Network already open, repeat the interaction that should trigger the request, and compare the log before and after. If the action happened before DevTools began recording, that earlier activity will not be reconstructed automatically.
The page’s file tree is incomplete
Sources is a browser-facing resource view, not a server file browser. Confirm availability in Network and inspect the document or initiator that references the resource. A file that was never delivered to this session is outside what these panels can show.
Understand the limits and stay within scope
These tools reveal what the page delivered, rendered, or requested in your browser session. They do not, by themselves, reveal the complete server-side source code, private APIs, database contents, deployment history, or files that were never sent to the browser. A request visible in Network proves that this session made that request; it does not establish how the server generated the response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect only systems and data you are authorized to examine. Avoid submitting credentials or personal information merely to test a request, and do not treat a visible endpoint as permission to access unrelated records. The panels are diagnostic views, not a license to bypass access controls.
Do not use Network as the only performance diagnosis
Network is valuable for a particular request’s headers, response, initiator, and timing, but a slow page can have causes unrelated to network activity. Kayce Basques, author of a Chrome for Developers Network tutorial, advises: “If you’re looking for ways to improve page load performance, don’t start with the Network panel. There are many types of load performance issues that aren’t related to network activity. Start with the Lighthouse panel because it gives you targeted suggestions on how to improve your page.” Use Network to investigate a concrete transfer or request; start with Lighthouse when the question is broad page-load performance.
A practical inspection workflow
- Define the question. Decide whether you need the delivered document, the current DOM and styles, available resources, or actual request activity.
- Open the matching panel first. For Network work, open it before the reload or interaction that matters.
- Capture the initial state. Save the relevant source view, DOM location, or request list before changing the page.
- Perform one controlled action. Click, submit, scroll, or wait for the event you are investigating.
- Correlate evidence. Match a changed DOM node with its stylesheet, script, or Network request instead of inferring from a single panel.
- State the scope of your conclusion. Say whether you observed the initial response, this browser’s rendered state, or a request made during this session.
Bottom line
View Page Source answers what document arrived first. Elements or Page Inspector answers what the browser represents now. Sources lets you open page resources exposed to DevTools, and Network shows what was actually requested and returned. Open the panel before the event you need to observe, reload when recording a page load, and combine the views whenever scripts or asynchronous data change the page.
