A shiny classic can still hide serious corrosion, filler, accident repairs, or water damage. Inspect it in a deliberate order: research the exact model first, examine the dry body in natural light, check cavities and structural mounting points, then arrange a lift inspection by a knowledgeable mechanic when anything is inaccessible or uncertain. Never treat fresh paint, thick underseal, or a clean cabin as proof that the metal underneath is sound.

1. Prepare before you see the car

Learn the exact model’s weak points

Read model-specific restoration references before arranging a viewing. Note the normal panel joins, factory seams, suspension layout, known corrosion areas, and the degree of unevenness that was typical when the car was new. Hagerty advises learning a vehicle’s particular strengths, weaknesses, and oddities because visual appearance can be deceptive. A panel gap that looks alarming on one model may be within its original tolerances; on another, it may indicate a repair.

Ask the seller whether the car can be viewed dry and outside. Water can hide bubbling, waviness, and color differences, while a dark garage makes it difficult to read the bodywork. Bring a bright flashlight, clean gloves, a small inspection mirror, paper towels, and a phone or camera for notes. An illuminated inspection borescope is useful only if an accessible opening lets you look into a sill or other cavity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan a safe inspection

Do not reach under a car supported only by a jack. A lift or correctly placed, rated stands are required for an underneath inspection. If the seller will not permit safe access to the underside, treat the unverified structure as a major uncertainty rather than assuming it is sound.

2. Start with a dry, natural-light walk-around

Read the body from a shallow angle

Stand several feet away and look along each side at a low, shallow angle. Straight reflections should remain straight. Ripples, waviness, bulges, dull patches, or abrupt changes in reflection can indicate filler, panel distortion, or a previous repair. Compare the left and right sides, but remember that a classic may have hand-finished panels and imperfect original tolerances.

Check every opening panel and seam

Inspect the gaps around doors, bonnet, boot lid, and other opening panels. Look for a consistent width, matching panel height, and latches that close without lifting or forcing the panel. Altered panel lines or one corner sitting higher than its opposite can point to collision repair or corrosion at a mounting edge. These clues call for closer investigation; they do not by themselves prove a crash or establish the quality of the repair.

Look for corrosion signatures in exposed areas

Examine wheel arches, door bottoms, folded seams, and windscreen scuttles for bubbles, lifting paint, or cracks. Where the edge is accessible, feel for swelling or a soft, uneven lip. Rust often begins on the back of a seam or inside a folded flange, so a small paint blister can represent more metal loss than its size suggests.

Identify repaint clues

Check for overspray on wheel arches, tires, exhaust and suspension parts, window rubbers, weather strips, and labels that should have been masked. Compare color, gloss, and texture from panel to panel. A fresh, uniform exterior can conceal filler and corrosion beneath new paint; paint quality is evidence about the work performed, not a certificate of the underlying metal.

What you see What it may mean What to do next
Ripples or wavy reflections Filler, reshaped metal, or a distorted panel Compare both sides and inspect the panel edges and inner surfaces.
Bubbles at an arch, seam, or door bottom Corrosion beneath the coating Trace the entire seam and inspect from behind where possible.
Uneven gaps or a changed panel line Previous repair, movement at a mounting point, or model-specific factory variation Check model references and look for matching evidence on the structure.
Overspray on rubber, tires, or suspension A repaint or repair carried out without complete disassembly Look for color differences, filler, and corrosion hidden under the coating.
Thick, fresh black coating underneath New underseal that may conceal rust or repair work Ask when it was applied and require a lift inspection of the metal.

3. Inspect the underside and structural metal

Sills and their ends

Prioritize the sills, especially the sections ending near the front and rear wheel arches. Inspect the outer sill, seams, drain points, and the junction with the floor. The inner sill can rust from inside while the exterior still appears presentable. Probe only where it is safe and appropriate, and do not damage sound paint merely to create a test hole.

If an access hole already exists, an illuminated borescope can show part of the cavity. It cannot see around every corner, quantify metal thickness, or replace a lift inspection; visibility depends on the opening, lighting, and the cavity’s shape.

Floors and box sections

Look across floor pans, crossmembers, chassis rails, and other box sections for perforation, layered repairs, distorted metal, or seams that do not match the model’s construction. Mud, oil, and underseal can hide evidence. Fresh material that is much thicker or cleaner than the surrounding underside deserves an explanation and a closer look at its edges.

Suspension and strut mounting points

Inspect suspension mounting points and, where the car uses them, McPherson strut towers and their surrounding seams. Corrosion at a mount can affect a load-bearing area. Damp mud packed around a mount or inside a wheel-arch pocket can retain moisture and warn that more serious corrosion is hidden behind it. This is a model-dependent check; not every classic has the same suspension arrangement.

Distinguish dirt from deliberate concealment

Older cars can legitimately carry road grime, but a sharp boundary between old dirt and newly applied underseal, glossy black coating over only repaired sections, or coating that bridges seams is a reason to ask questions. Photograph suspicious areas before anyone cleans or scrapes them. Do not assume that an attractive, continuous coating is factory-applied.

4. Check the cabin for water-damage clues

Lift carpets where the seller permits it and inspect the floor, seat mounting areas, and lower door interiors for rust, staining, or a persistent damp smell. Texas DMV guidance identifies rust inside the vehicle and under carpeting, fading or unusual condition in upholstery and door panels, and unusual undercarriage rust or flaking metal as clues that merit investigation.

These signs are not proof of flood history by themselves. A leaking windscreen, blocked drain, long-term condensation, or storage outside can produce similar evidence. Follow the moisture trail: compare front and rear floors, inspect the underside of carpeting, check wiring and fasteners for corrosion, and ask for repair and storage records. Record exactly where the signs occur rather than labeling the car as flood-damaged without corroboration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Separate rust clues from collision-repair clues

Use the same body survey to look for possible prior impact repairs. Misaligned panels, waviness, filler, changed panel joins, paint differences, and overspray are all reasons to investigate. Compare seams and fasteners on both sides, look behind trim where accessible, and check whether a repaired area transitions naturally into original metal.

Classic cars may have uneven factory gaps, replacement panels, or hand-finished surfaces even when they have never crashed. Therefore, a single irregular gap is not a verdict. Stronger evidence comes from several related clues in one area—for example, a changed gap combined with a ripple, overspray, and a nonstandard seam—followed by an inspection of the adjacent structure.

6. Follow a repeatable inspection sequence

  1. Research the car. Bring model-specific information about weak points, original joins, and suspension mounting locations.
  2. Confirm conditions. View the car dry, outdoors, and in natural light. Photograph each side before touching anything.
  3. Walk the exterior. Read reflections, compare panel gaps, operate each opening panel, and inspect arches, door bottoms, seams, and the windscreen scuttle.
  4. Trace paint evidence. Record bubbles, lifting, filler indications, color changes, and overspray on rubber, tires, exhaust, suspension, and labels.
  5. Inspect the cabin. Lift removable carpets, examine floors and door interiors, and note rust, dampness, staining, upholstery fading, or corroded fittings.
  6. View the underside safely. Use a lift or properly supported stands. Check sills and their ends, inner sill and floor joints, floors, box sections, crossmembers, suspension mounts, and strut towers where applicable.
  7. Investigate coatings. Compare the age and texture of underseal across the underside. Follow coating edges and inspect any area where fresh material hides seams or repairs.
  8. Use a borescope only where useful. Insert it through an existing sill access hole or other safe opening, understanding that it shows only the portion within its line of sight.
  9. Pause on unresolved structural questions. Do not negotiate a final condition judgment from surface appearance. Arrange an independent specialist inspection before committing.

7. Decide when a professional inspection is warranted

Arrange an independent classic-car pre-purchase inspection when you cannot see the structure, when thick coatings hide the metal, when suspected repairs involve suspension or load-bearing points, or when you cannot tell a model-specific factory feature from a later repair. Hagerty recommends putting a prospective purchase on a lift for a certified mechanic’s once-over and notes that some shops specialize in particular makes or models.

Choose the right inspector

  • Use a mechanic or marque specialist who regularly works on the car’s construction and suspension design.
  • Confirm that the inspection includes a lift, not only a road test and visual walk-around.
  • Ask the inspector to examine concealed sills, floors, box sections, and mounting points, not just visible paint.
  • Request photographs and a written description of corrosion, repairs, accessibility limits, and safety-critical findings.

The inspector’s role is to describe condition and uncertainty, not to apply a universal cosmetic-versus-structural pass/fail grade. Repair cost, originality, and acceptable condition depend on the model, intended use, and the buyer’s tolerance for restoration work.

8. Compare multiple cars on evidence, not shine

When two cars look similar, compare the quality and completeness of what you can verify. A car with more visible blemishes may be the safer choice if its structure is accessible and documented, while a freshly painted example may carry greater uncertainty.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Structural condition Are sills, floors, box sections, and suspension mounts visible, solid, and free of unexplained coating?
Rust or collision repairs Are repairs documented, does the metal transition look consistent, and are there signs of filler or overspray?
Access to evidence Could you inspect the relevant cavities and underside safely, or are they blocked by trim, mud, or new underseal?
Model-specific risks Does the car’s condition match the known weak points and original construction for its year and body style?
Supporting records Are there invoices, restoration photographs, maintenance records, or a recent independent inspection?

Do not assign a universal numerical threshold to cosmetic rust or panel gaps. The meaningful question is whether corrosion affects structure, whether repairs are understandable and accessible, and whether an independent professional agrees with the assessment.

9. Common inspection mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistaking clean paint for sound metal

Fresh paint can hide filler and corrosion. Always pair the exterior survey with an underside and cavity inspection.

Looking only at the outer sill

The inner sill and its floor junction may rust from inside. Check the complete sill assembly and use a borescope only when an access opening makes it practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accepting underseal without checking its age

Thick or newly applied underseal can obscure mud, perforation, and repairs. Examine coating edges and require safe access to the underlying metal.

Calling every irregular gap accident damage

Factory tolerances vary on classic cars. Use model references and seek corroborating clues such as waviness, filler, overspray, or altered seams.

Declaring flood damage from one rusty part

Interior and undercarriage rust should trigger a water-intrusion investigation, not a definitive history claim. Look for a pattern across carpets, upholstery, door panels, wiring, and underside components.

Working beneath an unsupported car

A jack is for lifting, not for supporting a person underneath. Use a lift or correctly rated stands, or have the inspection performed by a professional facility.

10. Make the purchase decision

After the inspection, separate findings into three categories: structural safety, repair quality and extent, and cosmetic or originality concerns. Obtain clarification for every area that could not be seen. If a load-bearing point is corroded, inaccessible, or covered by unexplained material, treat that uncertainty as significant until a qualified specialist resolves it.

Keep the photographs, written findings, and seller explanations together. They let you compare cars on verifiable condition rather than on paint gloss or the seller’s description. Vehicle title, inspection, and roadworthiness requirements vary by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply where you will register and operate the car.

11. Questions to ask the seller

Ask when the car was last painted, undersealed, or repaired, and whether the work involved cutting out metal or applying filler. Request invoices, restoration photographs, and the names of shops that performed structural or body repairs. Ask specifically whether the sills, floors, suspension mounts, or strut towers have ever been replaced. A vague answer is not proof of a bad car, but it tells you which areas deserve extra scrutiny.

Also ask how the car was stored and whether it has been exposed to rain, flooding, coastal air, or long periods on damp ground. Confirm whether carpets, sound deadening, trim, or wheel-arch liners were removed during restoration. These questions help explain missing fasteners, fresh coating, mismatched materials, or areas that cannot be viewed during a casual walk-around.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Judge the quality of a claimed repair

A seller’s statement that a panel was “done” does not describe the result. Look for a repair that follows the original seam and shape, uses consistent metal thickness, leaves accessible drain paths, and transitions cleanly into surrounding factory construction. A patch welded over weakened metal, a seam sealed under heavy coating, or a repair that changes panel alignment deserves a specialist’s opinion.

Compare both sides of the car and inspect the back of repaired areas where trim or wheel-arch liners can be removed without damage. Photograph the area before and after any removable covering is taken off. If access is refused, record that limitation in your notes rather than assuming the hidden work is either excellent or defective.

13. Organize findings before negotiating

Make a location-by-location list: left and right sills, each sill end, floor sections, box members, suspension mounts, arches, door bottoms, scuttle, cabin floors, and any repaired panel. Mark each item as visible and sound, showing a surface clue, covered or inaccessible, or requiring professional confirmation. This prevents an attractive paint finish from overshadowing one serious structural unknown.

Use the list to request targeted answers and a written inspection. There is no single universal cosmetic-versus-structural threshold for every classic, and the acceptable amount of originality loss depends on the model and your intended use. The practical decision is whether you understand the condition well enough to accept the repair work, risk, and further inspection needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can fresh paint prove that a classic car is rust-free?

No. Fresh paint may cover filler, corrosion, or an earlier repair. Inspect reflections, seams, panel edges, the cabin, and the underside, and obtain a lift inspection when the metal is not visible.

Where does hidden rust most often matter structurally?

Check sills and their ends, inner sill-to-floor joints, floor pans, box sections, crossmembers, suspension mounting points, and strut mounts where applicable. Model-specific references should guide the order.

Is an inspection borescope enough to check a sill?

No. An illuminated borescope can help through an existing access hole, but it shows only part of the cavity and cannot measure all metal or replace a properly supported lift inspection.

Should one rusty interior area be treated as proof of flood damage?

No. Rust under carpet, unusual upholstery fading, corroded fittings, or undercarriage flaking should prompt investigation. Leaks, condensation, and outdoor storage can create similar clues.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I hire a marque specialist?

Use one when structural areas are inaccessible, fresh underseal hides the metal, repairs affect suspension or load-bearing points, or you cannot distinguish a factory feature from later work. Request a lift inspection with photographs and written findings.

How should I compare two apparently similar classic cars?

Compare structural visibility and condition, repair evidence and quality, model-specific weak points, access to concealed areas, and supporting records. Do not choose solely by paint gloss or a cosmetic grade.

The Bottom Line

Inspect a classic car from the outside in and from the roofline down: dry natural light, reflections and gaps, seams and arches, cabin floors, then safely supported sills, floors, box sections, and mounting points. Treat fresh paint, thick underseal, damp mud, and isolated rust as clues rather than conclusions. When structure is hidden or uncertain, pay for an independent marque specialist’s lift inspection before you commit.
