What is superscript used for?
Superscript is text positioned above the normal baseline, often with a different visual size or alignment. Common examples include the 2 in x2, ordinal indicators such as 1st, trademark and registered symbols such as TM and ®, footnote markers, and scientific notation.
Superscript is a formatting effect rather than necessarily a separate character. Formatting a normal 2 as superscript is different from inserting the Unicode character 2. Formatted text generally remains ordinary editable text, while a Unicode superscript is a standalone character with its own font, search, copying, conversion, and accessibility behavior.

How do you insert superscript in Word from the Home tab?
The Ribbon is the most dependable method in desktop Word and Word for the web.
- Type the text normally, or open the document containing the existing text.
- Select the character, number, word, or short phrase that should be raised.
- Open the Home tab.
- In the Font group, select Superscript, usually identified by an X2 icon.
- Check that only the intended selection appears above the baseline.

The desktop Word shortcut toggles superscript for selected text or for text typed at the cursor.

On many keyboards, the plus sign is produced by holding Shift while pressing the = key. In practice, the Windows sequence is usually Ctrl + Shift + =, and the Mac sequence is usually Command + Shift + =. The important part is the documented Plus-key shortcut, not an unshifted key that may not exist on your keyboard.
Keyboard layouts, browser shortcuts, and operating-system settings can affect how the shortcut behaves. If the shortcut does not work, select the text and use Home > Superscript instead. Microsoft lists the desktop shortcuts in its current superscript and subscript instructions.
How do you type new superscript text in Word?
Turn superscript on before typing the character, then turn it off immediately afterward.

For example, to type x2, type x, turn superscript on, type 2, turn superscript off, and continue typing. Superscript remains active until you toggle it off, so failing to switch it off can cause the rest of a sentence to appear raised.

How do you turn superscript off in Word?
If superscript is active, select the Superscript button again or press the same keyboard shortcut again. For text that is already formatted, select the superscripted text before toggling the effect off.
If the mistake happened immediately, Ctrl + Z on Windows or Command + Z on Mac is usually the least destructive fix. Undo reverses the recent action without intentionally removing unrelated formatting.
Ctrl + Spacebar removes character formatting in Word, but it is a broader reset rather than a superscript-only command. It can also remove direct formatting such as bold, italic, font changes, or color. Use it only when removing those other character-formatting changes is acceptable. How do you use the Font dialog for superscript?
The Font dialog applies superscript through the Effects options and is useful when the Ribbon button is difficult to find or when you need more detailed character controls.
- Select the text.
- Open the Home tab.
- In the Font group, select the small Font dialog box launcher.
- Under Effects, select Superscript.
- Select OK.
The Font dialog can also provide vertical positioning or offset controls in versions that expose them. A higher offset raises text and a lower offset moves text downward without necessarily changing the font size. Use offset adjustments sparingly: excessive positioning can make text look inconsistent or reduce readability.
Should you use superscript formatting, a symbol, or an equation?
Use ordinary superscript formatting for short text in a normal sentence, a simple exponent, a trademark, an ordinal indicator, or a footnote marker. Use a symbol when the required standalone Unicode character already exists. Use an equation object for complex mathematical notation.

Superscript is not automatically the same thing as an exponent. Superscript describes visual placement; an exponent describes a mathematical relationship. A simple exponent can be displayed with superscript formatting, but complex mathematics should be built as an equation.

- Open Insert > Symbol > More Symbols.
- Choose an appropriate font, commonly (normal text).
- If available, open the Subset menu and choose Superscripts and Subscripts.
- Select the required character.
- Select Insert, then Close.
Microsoft’s Word symbol instructions explain that the selected font affects which characters are available. If a symbol is missing, try (normal text) or a symbol-rich font such as Segoe UI Symbol, then inspect the appropriate subset.
Ready-made symbols are convenient, but superscript characters do not exist for every letter or number. A Unicode character can have a different appearance from formatted text, may not match the surrounding typeface, and can behave differently when copied, searched, converted, or read by assistive technology. For ordinary document formatting, the Superscript command is usually the more flexible choice.

- Choose an equation structure containing a superscript or script placeholder.
- Replace the placeholders with the required base and exponent.
- Continue using equation structures for fractions, radicals, subscripts, matrices, or other components.

Do not build a complicated formula by manually raising individual characters if alignment matters. Mixing ordinary text formatting with equation formatting can produce uneven spacing and positioning. Build the complete expression inside the equation editor instead.
Can you insert superscript in Word for the web?
Yes. Word for the web supports ordinary superscript formatting through the Ribbon: select the text, open Home, and choose Superscript from the Font controls.
The Ribbon is the safest Word-for-the-web method because desktop keyboard shortcuts may behave differently depending on the browser, keyboard layout, and operating system. Microsoft distinguishes ordinary formatting from equations: Word for the web can display existing equations, but creating or editing mathematical equations requires desktop Word.
Therefore, Word for the web is sufficient for a footnote marker, trademark, ordinal indicator, or simple exponent. Open the document in desktop Word when you need to create or modify a complex equation.

How do you insert superscript in Word on a phone or tablet?
In the Word mobile app, select the text, open the formatting menu or Font options, and choose Superscript. The control may be inside an expanded formatting menu, particularly on a smaller screen or in portrait orientation.
- Select the character or text.
- Open the formatting controls.

Why is the superscript shortcut not working?
When the shortcut fails, the quickest recovery is to select the text and use Home > Superscript. The most common causes are an incorrectly entered Plus key, no text selection, an inactive editable document, a browser intercepting the shortcut, or a nonstandard keyboard layout.
Use this troubleshooting sequence:
- Select only the character that should be raised.
- Apply Home > Superscript.
- If the button is unavailable or difficult to locate, open the Font dialog box launcher and select Superscript under Effects.
- Try the shortcut again after confirming that Word, rather than another application or browser control, has focus.
Why did too much text become superscript?
Too much text becomes superscript when the toggle was turned on before typing and was not turned off afterward, or when a larger selection was highlighted than intended.
To fix the problem, select only the text that should return to normal and toggle Superscript off. If the error was the most recent action, use Ctrl + Z or Command + Z. If an entire word rose when only one character was intended, select the individual character and apply superscript again after restoring the rest of the word.
Why is a superscript symbol missing from the Symbol menu?
A superscript symbol may be missing because the selected font does not contain that character, the wrong subset is selected, or no Unicode superscript version exists for the requested character.
Try (normal text) or a symbol-rich font such as Segoe UI Symbol, and inspect the Superscripts and Subscripts subset. If the character still is not available, type the ordinary character and apply Word’s Superscript formatting instead.
Do you need desktop Word for superscript?
You do not need paid desktop Word for basic superscript formatting: Word for the web and mobile Word can handle ordinary short superscript text.
