There is no single shiny-hunting rate or method for every Pokémon game. First identify your title, then use the method supported by that game: SOS chaining in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Catch Combos plus Lures in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, or qualifying mass-outbreak events in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. A Shiny Charm can improve encounter chances in games that offer it, but its requirements and effect are title-specific.

Identify the game before choosing a method

“Shiny Pokémon” describes the alternate-color Pokémon found through a game’s own encounter system. The odds, bonuses, unlocks and event rules are not a franchise-wide standard. Applying a method from one title to another can waste hours or cause you to miss a time-limited opportunity.

Game context Officially described approach What you must establish first Availability
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon SOS chaining, with longer chains improving the chance of a shiny appearing Whether you have completed the Alola Pokédex and can receive the Shiny Charm Ongoing in normal wild encounters
Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! Catch Combos, supported by Lures and the Shiny Charm The species you intend to catch and whether your combo is still active Ongoing while playing and maintaining the combo
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Special mass outbreaks announced through official events The event dates, eligible game version and required update data Event-limited; dates and bonuses change

The table is a decision aid, not a universal odds chart. Official sources do not define the denominators consistently enough to compare a percentage from one game with a chain bonus from another.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: build an SOS chain

What the official guidance establishes

Pokémon.com’s strategy guidance for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon recommends SOS chaining. In this system, you extend a sequence of wild encounters rather than treating every encounter as an isolated roll. The guidance says that building a longer chain increases the chance that a shiny will appear.

The same guidance gives an approximate normal-encounter rate of about 4,000 to 1 without the Shiny Charm. That figure belongs to these two games and to the stated normal-encounter situation; it is not a rate for every Pokémon title, every encounter type or every hunting method.

Practical SOS-chain workflow

  1. Choose the target and location. Decide which species you are hunting and use a location where that species can appear. This prevents you from building a long sequence around the wrong encounter.
  2. Start a wild encounter. Enter the encounter normally and use the game’s SOS interaction to have the sequence continue.
  3. Continue the sequence deliberately. Each successful continuation makes the chain longer. Keep your attention on the current encounter so you do not accidentally end the sequence or defeat the wrong Pokémon.
  4. Check your supplies and status between encounters. A chain is useful only while you can keep hunting. Restock before beginning a serious session and pause if your team can no longer continue safely.
  5. Stop only when you have the result you want or intentionally abandon the hunt. A long chain improves the chance; it does not promise that the next encounter will be shiny.

The official material does not provide one cross-title percentage for each chain length, so avoid calculators that present an SOS number as a universal Pokémon probability. Treat chain length as a way to improve your odds within this game’s system, not as a timer or guarantee.

Use the Shiny Charm when this game makes it available

Pokémon.com recommends completing the Alola Pokédex to receive the Shiny Charm in these games. The charm increases shiny encounter chances, so it is a worthwhile preparation step before committing to a long SOS session. Confirm that the Pokédex requirement is met on the save file you are using; a charm obtained in a different title or profile does not automatically apply here.

How to interpret the 4,000-to-1 baseline

The quoted baseline is an approximation, not a promise that one out of every 4,000 encounters will be shiny. Random results can arrive much earlier or much later. SOS chaining and the Shiny Charm change the situation described by the baseline, which is why you should not multiply the figure by assumptions from another game.

Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!: maintain a Catch Combo

What a Catch Combo does

In the Let’s Go games, the official strategy is to catch the same species repeatedly and build a Catch Combo. Pokémon.com states that a Catch Combo of more than 30 maximizes the potential bonuses relevant to shiny hunting. The guidance also recommends using a Lure and having the Shiny Charm, when available, to further increase shiny chances.

A combo is an investment in continuity. If the sequence ends, you may have to rebuild it before receiving the same bonus conditions. Read the game’s on-screen messages carefully and avoid actions that you know will terminate your current combo.

Step-by-step Catch Combo plan

  1. Pick one species. Start with the species you actually want, because catching a different species does not serve the same combo objective.
  2. Catch that species repeatedly. Keep the chain focused on one species and verify the displayed combo count after each catch.
  3. Continue past 30. The official guidance identifies a combo above 30 as the point where the potential combo bonuses are maximized. Reaching that threshold improves the setup, but it does not create a guaranteed shiny encounter.
  4. Activate a Lure. A Lure is one of the additional tools Pokémon.com names for increasing shiny chances in these games. Use it according to the item’s in-game instructions and monitor its remaining duration.
  5. Add the Shiny Charm if your save has one. The charm is a separate bonus from the Catch Combo and Lure. Its availability and acquisition requirements should be checked for the specific title.
  6. Continue checking encounters while preserving the combo. The objective is to keep the favorable conditions active long enough for a shiny to appear, not to assume that reaching the threshold ends the hunt.

Why a large combo can still take time

Pokémon.com explicitly warns: “But you shouldn’t expect to find a Shiny Pokémon quickly even with a large Catch Combo!” That warning matters because a favorable setup changes probability, not certainty. A player can do everything correctly and still experience a long run without a shiny.

Plan your session around the possibility of an extended hunt. Keep enough time, healing items and capture resources for the species you are targeting, and decide in advance when you will stop rather than breaking the combo impulsively out of frustration.

Scarlet and Violet: verify mass-outbreak events before hunting

What is established about event outbreaks

Official event notices for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have described special mass outbreaks in which shiny Pokémon were more likely to appear. These are event rules, not a permanent guarantee for every outbreak in the games.

The cited notice was published on July 22, 2025 and covered scheduled events running from July through September 2025. Those dates have passed. Do not describe that event as active now; consult the current official notices for a new schedule and its exact conditions.

How to check an event before you travel or start a hunt

  1. Read the current official event notice. Confirm the start and end time, the Pokémon or outbreak type covered, and whether the notice applies to both Scarlet and Violet.
  2. Update the game’s event information. The cited notice required the latest Poké Portal News and update data to participate. Follow the notice’s current instructions rather than relying on an old event announcement.
  3. Confirm that your version is eligible. An event may name both games but still impose different conditions for access, distribution or timing.
  4. Hunt only while the event is active. Once the stated dates end, its increased shiny likelihood should not be assumed to remain in ordinary gameplay.
  5. Keep the notice available while playing. If the event has a special requirement, the official wording is the authoritative reference for what counts as participation.

What cannot be safely generalized

The cited official material does not supply a comprehensive current odds table for all Scarlet and Violet shiny methods, nor does it establish one permanent standard method that applies to every outbreak. Therefore, do not import the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon baseline into these games or present an expired event as a current shortcut. If no active official notice gives a bonus, treat the event advantage as unconfirmed rather than guessing a rate.

The Shiny Charm: a useful bonus with title-specific requirements

The Shiny Charm is an item that official Pokémon guidance describes as increasing shiny encounter chances in games that provide it. It is not a universal account-wide upgrade. You must obtain it in each title according to that title’s rules, and some games tie it to completing a Pokédex.

  • Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: the official guidance recommends completing the Alola Pokédex to receive the charm.
  • Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!: the charm is named as an additional way to increase shiny chances, but the supplied official summary does not state its exact acquisition path.
  • Scarlet and Violet: check the current game’s official instructions for availability and requirements; the event notice alone does not establish a permanent charm procedure.

Do not delay a hunt indefinitely while assuming the charm is mandatory. It is a probability improvement, not a prerequisite for seeing a shiny. If the Pokédex task is practical for your save, completing it before a long hunt can make the time investment more efficient.

Compare the methods without mixing their odds

Method Game Setup or unlock Evidence for increased chances Effort and chain risk Ongoing or limited
SOS chain Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon Begin a wild encounter and continue the SOS sequence; Shiny Charm is an optional additional bonus after the applicable Pokédex requirement Longer chains increase the chance; the normal no-charm baseline is stated only for these games Requires sustained attention and preserving the sequence Ongoing in normal encounters
Catch Combo Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee! Catch the same species repeatedly; a combo above 30 maximizes potential bonuses; Lure and Shiny Charm add support Official guidance describes a bonus increase but warns that a shiny may still take time Repeated captures and avoiding actions that end the combo Ongoing while the combo remains active
Special mass outbreak Scarlet, Violet Current event notice, eligible version, latest Poké Portal News and update data Specific official events make shiny Pokémon more likely Low setup if eligible, but the opportunity disappears when the event ends Time-limited and schedule-dependent

This comparison deliberately avoids ranking the methods by a single percentage. The games describe different systems and conditions, so a numeric comparison would imply precision that the official material does not provide.

A reliable planning checklist for any shiny hunt

1. Write down the exact title and target species

Record the game version, the species and the location or event in which you intend to hunt. This simple note prevents a common mistake: following a guide written for a different title because its terminology sounds familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Separate confirmed bonuses from assumptions

Mark each bonus as one of three things: explicitly described by the game’s official guidance, available only after an unlock, or not established for your situation. A Shiny Charm, a Catch Combo and an event outbreak are separate conditions; having one does not imply that the others are active.

3. Complete unlocks before starting the long session

If your game offers a Shiny Charm after a Pokédex task, finish that task first when feasible. In an event-based game, download the required news and update data before the event window closes. Starting preparation after the hunt has begun can cost more time than doing it beforehand.

4. Protect the method’s continuity

SOS chains and Catch Combos reward a sequence, so treat every interruption as a potential reset. Keep your team and capture supplies ready, read prompts instead of rushing through them, and avoid experimenting with unfamiliar actions during the active chain.

5. Track attempts without turning the count into a promise

A written count can show how long you have hunted and help you plan breaks. It cannot predict the next result. Probability improvements make a shiny more likely over many attempts; they do not schedule one at a particular number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Recheck event information on the day

For Scarlet and Violet, an old calendar entry is not proof that an outbreak bonus is still live. Confirm current dates and participation requirements through the latest official notice immediately before you begin.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using one rate for every Pokémon game

Problem: Treating the approximately 4,000-to-1 normal-encounter figure as a franchise-wide rule.

Correction: Keep that figure attached to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and to the no-Shiny-Charm normal-encounter context in which it was stated. Use the relevant game’s own guidance for every other title.

Assuming a threshold guarantees a shiny

Problem: Stopping research after reaching a 30-plus Catch Combo because the next encounter is expected to be shiny.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Treat the threshold as the point where the potential combo bonuses are maximized, then continue while preserving the combo. The official warning says a large combo can still require patience.

Playing an expired outbreak

Problem: Following a July–September 2025 event notice as though its bonus were permanent.

Correction: Check the current official schedule, update data and eligibility. If the dates have ended, wait for a new notice rather than assuming the same outbreak advantage remains.

Assuming the Shiny Charm transfers between games

Problem: Expecting a charm obtained in one title to improve encounters in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Verify the item and its unlock requirements separately for the title on the screen. Pokédex completion and other prerequisites are game-specific.

Breaking a chain through rushed inputs

Problem: Losing an SOS sequence or Catch Combo because the next action was chosen without reading the prompt.

Correction: Slow down, keep supplies ready and treat continuity as part of the method. If the sequence ends, decide calmly whether rebuilding it is worth the remaining time.

What to expect from the hunt

A shiny hunt is a probability exercise, not a guaranteed reward for completing a checklist. The strongest evidence available for these titles supports a game-specific approach: use the SOS system in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, combine a sustained Catch Combo with named bonuses in Let’s Go, and use only currently announced mass-outbreak advantages in Scarlet and Violet. The Shiny Charm can improve the situation where the game offers it, but it does not remove randomness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a hunt runs longer than expected, verify the title, method, unlocks and event dates before changing strategies. That check is more useful than importing an attractive number from another game.
