phpMyAdmin normally does not set the upload ceiling itself; PHP does. Increase PHP’s upload_max_filesize and set post_max_size to a still larger value, then allow enough input time, execution time and memory for the dump. Restart the PHP handler or web server and verify the effective settings before importing again.
What actually limits a phpMyAdmin import?
The Import page is a web upload, so the request must pass PHP’s configuration before phpMyAdmin can read the SQL file. The phpMyAdmin FAQ entry “I cannot upload big dump files” points administrators to max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size. It also requires post_max_size to be larger than upload_max_filesize.

Those are PHP defaults, not a universal phpMyAdmin limit; a hosting provider, operating-system package or administrator may already have different values. A dump only slightly larger than the effective limit can therefore fail even when phpMyAdmin itself is working normally.
If the request exceeds post_max_size, PHP can empty $_POST and $_FILES rather than returning a normal upload error code. The visible result may be an unchanged Import page, a generic failure or no useful message. Check the PHP settings instead of assuming that the SQL file is corrupt.

Use a little headroom rather than matching the file byte-for-byte. For example, if the largest uncompressed dump is 200 MB, an illustrative starting point could be upload_max_filesize = 256M and post_max_size = 280M, with suitable time and memory values. These numbers are an example of the required ordering, not a PHP or phpMyAdmin recommendation. Choose limits that fit your dump, server capacity and policy.
Before editing PHP
Measure the file you really intend to import
Check the uncompressed size of the SQL dump, not only the size of a ZIP or gzip archive. If you upload a compressed archive, the upload limit applies to the archive; the import process still needs enough time and memory to decompress and execute its contents. Keep a margin for multipart form overhead and for a future dump that is somewhat larger.
Identify the PHP configuration used by the web request
The command-line PHP installation and the PHP instance serving phpMyAdmin are not necessarily the same. Running php -i (or php -i | grep "Loaded Configuration File" on systems with grep) is a common way to find the CLI configuration file, but it does not prove that the web server uses that file. Confirm the web SAPI’s effective values with your hosting control panel or a temporary, access-restricted PHP information page, and remove that page afterwards because it reveals server details.
Confirm that you can change the setting
PHP classifies these directives as PHP_INI_PERDIR settings. They can be set in php.ini, an Apache directory configuration such as .htaccess, or server configuration, subject to the PHP handler and the host’s permissions. Shared hosting may lock them. If you cannot edit the active configuration, use the server-side alternatives described below or ask the host to change the values for the site.

Method 1: edit the active php.ini
- Locate the file used by the web SAPI. Use the server’s PHP information or hosting panel, rather than assuming the CLI path is the web path. On a machine you administer, compare the reported configuration with the PHP-FPM, CGI or Apache service configuration.
- Make a backup. Copy the existing
php.inibefore changing it so that you can restore a known-good configuration if the service fails to start. - Set the upload and request ceilings. Edit the directives so that
post_max_sizeis strictly larger thanupload_max_filesize. An example block for a site expecting a dump around 200 MB is:
upload_max_filesize = 256M
post_max_size = 280M
max_input_time = 600
max_execution_time = 600
memory_limit = 512MKeep the example values proportional to your workload. A larger memory limit does not make a dump smaller and can let concurrent requests consume the server’s RAM. If your provider specifies a maximum value, stay within it.
- Save the file and restart the component that loads PHP. Depending on the handler, this may mean restarting PHP-FPM, restarting Apache, restarting another web service, or using the host’s “Restart PHP” control. A restart is generally required because long-running workers keep the old configuration in memory; the exact command and service name are installation-specific.
- Verify from the web context. Recheck the effective values in the hosting panel or a protected PHP information page. Then open phpMyAdmin’s Import page. Many installations display a “Maximum size” note that reflects the current upload setting; treat that display as a practical check rather than a behavior guaranteed by every phpMyAdmin version.
- Run a controlled import. Use a copy of the dump first, watch the PHP and web-server logs, and avoid starting several large imports at once. Once the test succeeds, remove any diagnostic PHP information file.
Method 2: per-directory or server configuration
When the host allows per-directory overrides, the same PHP_INI_PERDIR directives can be applied to the directory or virtual host that serves phpMyAdmin. This limits the larger values to the application instead of changing every site on the server. The exact syntax depends on the PHP handler.
Apache module handler
Under Apache’s module-based PHP handler, administrators commonly use php_value lines in an allowed directory configuration or .htaccess. A representative pattern is:
php_value upload_max_filesize 256M
php_value post_max_size 280M
php_value max_input_time 600
php_value max_execution_time 600
php_value memory_limit 512MThis pattern is not portable to every Apache setup. In particular, php_value lines intended for the module handler can produce an HTTP 500 error when PHP is running through PHP-FPM or CGI. If that happens, remove the override, inspect the web-server error log, and apply the values through the PHP-FPM pool, virtual-host configuration or hosting panel instead.

PHP-FPM, CGI and managed hosting
For PHP-FPM or CGI, use the pool or server configuration mechanism provided by the administrator or host. The setting must be applied to the PHP workers that serve phpMyAdmin, not merely to an unrelated command-line installation. Some providers expose per-site PHP version and INI controls; others require a support request. Do not assume that a file placed in the phpMyAdmin directory will be read.
Why all five values matter
upload_max_filesize and post_max_size
Both limits must clear the dump size, and the request limit must be the larger of the two. If upload_max_filesize is 256M but post_max_size is 128M, the request still fails at 128M. If the request crosses post_max_size, PHP may discard the uploaded data without setting a normal file-upload error, which explains why the failure can look silent.
max_input_time
This timer covers receiving request input, including the upload itself. A fast local connection may finish within the default 60 seconds, while a remote or congested connection may not. Increase it when the upload stops partway through even though the size values are high enough. Set a finite value appropriate to the site rather than disabling the timer indiscriminately.
max_execution_time
After the file arrives, phpMyAdmin and PHP still have to parse the request and send SQL to MySQL. A large dump with many statements, indexes or triggers can exceed the execution allowance. Increase this value when logs or the user-facing error indicate a timeout during processing, not merely during transfer.

memory_limit
Memory is separate from upload size. A 200 MB file does not necessarily require 200 MB of PHP memory, but parsing, decompression, form handling and phpMyAdmin overhead can raise the peak. Increase the limit cautiously and leave RAM for the database server, web server and other users. If the host has a fixed memory quota, a higher PHP value may simply cause the process to be killed by the operating system.
Security and capacity considerations
Large request limits expand the amount of data an unauthenticated or authenticated endpoint may ask PHP to receive and process. The PHP common-pitfalls guidance warns that setting large limits across an entire server or virtual host can increase security risk and recommends restricting changes to the directories that need them where possible.

- Keep phpMyAdmin protected by authentication, network restrictions and current access controls.
- Use a finite timeout and memory value; do not make every PHP request unlimited.
- Monitor free disk space, PHP worker memory and database capacity before importing.
- Restore ordinary limits after a one-time migration if the larger values are no longer required.
When you cannot raise the upload limit
Use phpMyAdmin’s server-side upload directory
phpMyAdmin supports an upload directory configured with $cfg['UploadDir']. Place the dump on the server through an approved administrative transfer method, then select it from the Import page. The browser no longer has to transfer the file in the same request, so this route is useful when browser uploads are restricted. The directory must be protected from public downloads and writable/readable permissions must match the web server’s requirements.
The import documentation also covers drag-and-drop and compressed gzip, ZIP and bzip2 uploads. Compression can reduce transfer time and disk use, but it does not remove the need for sufficient processing time and memory after the file is received.

Run the import with the MySQL client
The phpMyAdmin FAQ suggests moving the file to the database server with a controlled method such as SCP or FTP and running it through the MySQL client’s SQL source command. This avoids the browser and PHP request limits entirely. It requires shell access, database credentials, correct character-set and connection options, and a backup or rollback plan. Use the database server’s client version and permissions appropriate to the installation.
Troubleshooting by symptom

A repeatable checklist for a large dump
- Record the dump’s compressed and uncompressed sizes and decide which files must be imported.
- Confirm which PHP handler and configuration serve the phpMyAdmin request.
- Set
upload_max_filesizeabove the dump size. - Set
post_max_sizehigher thanupload_max_filesize, with additional headroom. - Set
max_input_timefor the expected upload duration. - Set
max_execution_timefor SQL parsing and execution. - Set

- Verify the values through the web context and check phpMyAdmin’s displayed maximum when available.
- Protect the dump, monitor logs and resources, and remove temporary diagnostic files after the import.
Version and scope notes
The guidance applies to phpMyAdmin documentation surfaced for the 4.9.x and 5.x lines, including 5.2 development documentation, although labels and wording can differ by release. The PHP defaults quoted above are version-dependent manual values, not promises about every distribution. The configuration principle is not country-specific; it depends on the PHP handler, server policy and hosting permissions in your installation.
