ownCloud accepts an upload only when every layer in the request path allows it. Raise PHP-FPM’s upload_max_filesize and post_max_size to at least the intended file size, then check the Nginx or Apache request limit, temporary space, destination storage, and timeout settings. Restart PHP-FPM and the web server, verify the values from the web-serving PHP context—not just the command-line PHP installation—and test with a file slightly larger than the previous ceiling.

How ownCloud’s effective upload limit is calculated

There is no single ownCloud switch that overrides every limit. The practical ceiling is the smallest limit enforced along the request path:

Layer Typical control What happens when it is lower than the file size What to change
PHP-FPM upload_max_filesize PHP rejects an individual uploaded file. Set it at or above the largest permitted file.
PHP-FPM request body post_max_size The complete multipart request is rejected, even if the individual-file limit is high enough. Set it no lower than upload_max_filesize; allow additional room for request overhead when appropriate.
Nginx client_max_body_size Nginx refuses the request before PHP receives it. Raise it so it is not lower than the PHP limit.
Apache LimitRequestBody Apache stops a request that exceeds the configured body size. Review the directive in the active virtual host or directory context.
Apache request timing mod_reqtimeout A slow transfer can be terminated before the file finishes. Review request-timeout settings for large or slow uploads.
Temporary filesystem upload_tmp_dir and its filesystem The upload runs out of temporary space, often appearing as a generic upload failure. Provide enough space for simultaneous temporary uploads.
Destination ownCloud data volume and user quota The request may reach ownCloud but cannot be committed. Check free space and the applicable quota or policy.

For a predictable result, choose a target size first and make every relevant limit compatible with it. A larger PHP value cannot compensate for a smaller proxy, web-server, quota, or filesystem limit.

Choose a target size before editing configuration

Do not copy a large value without deciding what your installation should permit. The correct number depends on storage capacity, user policy, the number of concurrent uploads, and how long your network connections are allowed to remain open.

  • Define the largest legitimate file. This may be a media archive, database export, virtual-machine image, or another known workload. The setting should reflect your policy rather than an arbitrary maximum.
  • Check destination capacity. A successful HTTP transfer still needs enough free space in the ownCloud data volume, and the user or group quota must accommodate the file.
  • Budget temporary space. PHP may hold an upload in the temporary directory before ownCloud stores it. Several simultaneous transfers can consume several times the size of one file.
  • Plan for transfer time. A high byte limit does not help if PHP, Apache, Nginx, a proxy, or a load balancer times out while a slow connection is still sending data.
  • Preserve a deliberate policy. Raising limits changes what clients can submit. Review authentication, quotas, monitoring, and operational procedures at the same time.

ownCloud’s documentation sometimes uses 16G for both PHP settings as an example. That figure is an example configuration, not a universal ownCloud maximum or a requirement for every server.

Find the PHP-FPM configuration that serves ownCloud

The PHP configuration used by a shell command is not necessarily the configuration used by the web request. A server can have several PHP versions, pools, and php.ini files. Edit the FPM instance and pool that ownCloud actually uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the PHP version behind the web site. Check the PHP-FPM pool referenced by the active Nginx or Apache virtual host. Record the version and the pool name before changing anything.
  2. Separate CLI and web contexts. A value displayed by php --ini or another command-line check describes CLI PHP. It does not prove that the FPM worker serving ownCloud has the same values.
  3. Inspect the web-serving context. Use your normal administrative diagnostic method to display the active PHP values through the ownCloud virtual host, or inspect the FPM pool and included configuration files directly. Remove or protect any temporary diagnostic page after checking it.
  4. Check for per-directory overrides. ownCloud can use an .user.ini file for PHP settings. Confirm whether one exists in the ownCloud document root and whether the FPM configuration permits user-level overrides.
  5. Back up the files you will edit. Keep a copy of the current FPM configuration, pool settings, and web-server configuration so a syntax error or unwanted policy change can be reversed.

PHP-FPM does not read these upload settings from .htaccess. Put them in the active FPM configuration or, where supported by the installation, in owncloud/.user.ini.

Raise PHP-FPM’s file and request limits

In the active PHP-FPM configuration, or in owncloud/.user.ini when that method is enabled, set both values. The following is the 16-gigabyte example used in ownCloud documentation:

upload_max_filesize = 16G
post_max_size = 16G

Replace the example with the target appropriate for your installation. upload_max_filesize governs one file; post_max_size governs the complete POST body. Therefore, post_max_size must not be lower than upload_max_filesize. If a multipart request includes additional form data or more than one file, leave suitable headroom rather than making the two values barely equal.

Use PHP’s supported size notation consistently, and avoid editing a different version’s php.ini by mistake. After saving, validate the PHP configuration if your platform provides a syntax check. A malformed directive can prevent FPM from starting, so keep the previous working file available for rollback.

Allow enough time and temporary storage

Increase input and execution time when transfers are slow

Large files sent over a slow connection can exceed the default processing window even when the byte limits are correct. Review max_input_time for the time PHP is allowed to receive request data and max_execution_time for the time allowed to process the request. Set values that match your network conditions and operational policy; there is no single safe number for every installation.

Timeouts can exist at more than one layer. A reverse proxy, load balancer, Nginx, Apache, PHP-FPM, or client may end the connection first. If failures occur at a consistent elapsed time rather than at a consistent file size, investigate timeout behavior before raising size limits further.

Provide space for temporary uploads

Check the filesystem used by upload_tmp_dir. It must have enough capacity for uploads arriving at the same time, not merely for one file. Verify ownership and permissions as well as free space so the FPM worker can create and write temporary files.

Also check the ownCloud data volume, because the completed file still needs room after temporary handling. A transfer can therefore fail in two different places: while PHP is staging the request, or when ownCloud is writing the final object.

Check the front-end web server

Nginx

Nginx can reject a request before it reaches PHP-FPM. Review the active server or location configuration for client_max_body_size. Set it to a value that is not lower than the permitted PHP upload size, while still enforcing your intended policy. Confirm that you are editing the virtual host that serves ownCloud rather than an unused site definition.

After changing the directive, apply the configuration using your platform’s normal Nginx reload or restart procedure. A successful configuration test followed by a reload is preferable to restarting blindly, because it catches syntax errors before the existing workers are replaced.

Apache

With Apache, inspect LimitRequestBody in the active virtual host, directory, or other applicable context. A value lower than PHP’s limits remains the effective ceiling. Apache’s mod_reqtimeout can also terminate slow large requests, so review it when failures depend on transfer speed or elapsed time.

Apply the Apache configuration through the service-management method used by your operating system, and verify that the intended virtual host is enabled. If Apache forwards requests to PHP-FPM, both the Apache request limit and the FPM values must permit the upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand chunked uploads

ownCloud supports chunk storage through the OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR configuration variable. Its environment-variable reference also documents OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD, which maps to the PHP size settings. These options are particularly relevant in containerized deployments, where environment variables may be the supported way to supply PHP-related values.

Chunking changes request behavior by splitting a logical file into smaller requests. That can help a client or intermediary handle a very large transfer, but it does not remove the need for adequate temporary and destination storage. It also does not override user quotas, server policy, PHP limits, or a web server that rejects each request.

When comparing a direct web upload with a chunked client upload, evaluate four separate questions:

Question Direct upload Chunked upload
Request size One request carries the file and must pass the front-end and PHP body limits. Each request is smaller, but the client and server must support the chunk workflow.
Storage Needs temporary and final storage for the transfer. Still needs chunk storage, final storage, and capacity for concurrent transfers.
Quota and policy Applied by ownCloud and the configured account or installation policy. Still applied to the completed logical file; chunking is not a quota bypass.
Failure diagnosis Often points directly to a body-size or timeout limit. May involve chunk-directory permissions, cleanup, or client support in addition to those limits.

Restart services and verify the web-serving values

Configuration changes do not become reliable until the processes that cache them have been reloaded or restarted. Restart or reload the active PHP-FPM service after changing PHP values, and apply the Nginx or Apache configuration after changing the front end. Use the service names and commands appropriate to your operating system and installed PHP version; do not assume that a command for one version controls another.

  1. Validate the edited PHP and web-server configuration using the checks provided by your platform.
  2. Reload or restart the PHP-FPM instance serving ownCloud.
  3. Reload or restart the Nginx or Apache instance serving the ownCloud virtual host.
  4. Read the values again through the web-serving PHP context. Confirm upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, and any relevant timeout values there.
  5. Upload a test file just above the old limit but comfortably below the new policy limit. A controlled test distinguishes a changed limit from a storage or timeout problem.
  6. Inspect ownCloud, PHP-FPM, and web-server logs immediately if the test fails. Identify which component returned the error before changing another setting.

Checking only the command-line PHP output can give a false sense that the change worked. The web request is the authority for ownCloud uploads.

Troubleshoot by failure pattern

Observed symptom Most likely layer Next check
The same size fails immediately, and the error appears before ownCloud processes the request. Nginx or Apache request-body limit. Compare client_max_body_size or LimitRequestBody with the intended PHP value in the active virtual host.
PHP reports that the uploaded file exceeds the allowed size. upload_max_filesize. Read the value from web-serving PHP and confirm the correct FPM pool was restarted.
The request is rejected even though the file limit looks high enough. post_max_size. Ensure it is at least as high as upload_max_filesize and allows the complete request body.
Small files work, but large transfers fail after a similar number of seconds. Input, execution, proxy, or web-server timeout. Review max_input_time, max_execution_time, Apache request timing, and any intermediary timeout.
Failure occurs after substantial data has transferred, with a temporary-file or disk-space message. Temporary filesystem. Check upload_tmp_dir capacity, permissions, and concurrent uploads.
The transfer completes but ownCloud cannot save the file. Destination volume, quota, or policy. Check free space in the ownCloud data volume and the account’s remaining quota.
Changes appear in CLI PHP but not in the browser. Different PHP configuration or FPM pool. Inspect and restart the PHP-FPM context used by the web virtual host.
Chunked transfers fail while ordinary requests work. Chunk directory or client workflow. Review OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR, permissions, available space, and whether the client supports ownCloud chunking.

PHP-FPM settings versus container environment variables

The right configuration method depends on how ownCloud is deployed. A traditional installation normally uses the active FPM configuration or owncloud/.user.ini. A container image may expose environment variables instead, in which case editing a file inside a running container can be lost when the container is replaced.

Deployment approach Where to configure What to verify
Host-installed PHP-FPM Active FPM configuration and pool, or supported owncloud/.user.ini. The web-serving PHP context shows the new values after the FPM restart.
Containerized ownCloud The image’s documented environment-variable mechanism, including OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD where applicable. The generated PHP configuration inside the running container reflects the requested values after redeployment.
Nginx front end Active Nginx server or location configuration. client_max_body_size is not lower than the permitted upload size.
Apache front end Active virtual-host or directory configuration. LimitRequestBody and request-timeout behavior permit the transfer.

Regardless of deployment style, the effective limit is still the lowest active value. Container variables do not eliminate web-server limits, storage requirements, quotas, or timeouts.

Operational safeguards after raising the limit

  • Monitor both filesystems. Watch the temporary-upload filesystem and the ownCloud data volume during a test with realistic concurrency.
  • Keep limits consistent. Document the intended maximum and record the PHP, web-server, proxy, and container settings that enforce it.
  • Test the slow path. A fast internal test may pass while remote users still hit timeout limits. Include a transfer that reflects the slowest expected connection.
  • Review cleanup behavior. Chunked and interrupted uploads can leave temporary data; ensure the configured chunk location has appropriate capacity and maintenance procedures.
  • Use logs for attribution. The first component to reject the request is the one whose limit needs attention. Raising every limit at once makes failures harder to diagnose.

What ownCloud’s documentation requires

“If you want to increase the maximum upload size, you will also have to modify your php-fpm configuration and increase the upload_max_filesize and post_max_size values.”

ownCloud Documentation, Configuration Notes and Tips

“The following PHP keys are affected and need to be reconfigured.”

ownCloud Documentation, Big File Upload Configuration

Those statements explain why changing only an ownCloud screen or only the command-line php.ini does not reliably raise the browser upload ceiling. The web-serving PHP-FPM configuration, front-end request limits, storage, and timing settings must agree.
