To reduce Minecraft server lag, first determine whether the delay is on the server (low TPS, delayed block breaks, rubber-banding and slow mob AI) or on a player’s device (low FPS and visual stutter). Capture a Spark profile while the problem is happening, then adjust view distance, simulation distance and heavy entity or plugin workloads one change at a time. Add RAM or buy faster hardware only when measurements show a real memory, CPU, storage or network bottleneck.

Server lag and client lag are different problems

Minecraft uses a client-server split. The server processes game rules, world updates, entity behavior and game ticks; each player’s client renders frames, audio and graphics. Treating every complaint as “the server needs more RAM” often wastes money and can leave the real cause untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signs of server-side lag

  • Blocks break late, then appear to pop several seconds afterward.
  • Players rubber-band or are moved back after walking or jumping.
  • Mobs pause, react slowly or take unusually long to find paths.
  • Redstone, crops, fluids or command-driven systems update late.
  • The server console reports “Can’t keep up,” or tick time rises above the normal 50-millisecond target (20 ticks per second).

Signs of client-side FPS lag

  • The world looks visually choppy while actions still register promptly.
  • One player’s screen stutters but other players report normal movement.
  • Lowering graphics settings, particles or client render distance improves the experience.

Ask affected players whether interactions are delayed or merely difficult to render. A server profile cannot repair a laptop that cannot render the chosen shader pack, and a graphics upgrade cannot fix a server that is missing ticks.

Measure an active incident before changing settings

Optimization presets copied from another server are risky because a setting that helps one workload can break a farm, redstone machine or plugin on another. Paper’s documentation says profiling is effective only while the problem is actively occurring. Reproduce the normal lag first: record the player count, dimensions in use, recent activity, and whether the symptom is TPS or FPS related.

Back up and shut down safely

Make a complete backup and stop the server before editing configuration files. Paper warns that editing files while the process is running can corrupt them; only a full shutdown guarantees that pending writes are complete. Keep the original file so every change can be reverted.

  1. Warn players and save the world normally.
  2. Use the server panel’s stop command or send the console stop command.
  3. Wait until the process exits; do not merely close the terminal window.
  4. Copy the world, plugin or mod configuration and server-properties files to a dated backup location.
  5. Record the current Java options, Paper build, player count and distance settings.

Profile with Spark while the lag is happening

On Paper 1.21 and later, Spark is bundled and is the preferred profiler. Start it from the server console or as an operator:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/spark profiler start --timeout 600

This collects a ten-minute profile and returns a report URL. For a shorter incident, use the five-minute example from Paper’s troubleshooting guidance:

/spark profiler start --timeout 300

If the problem is a brief tick spike, focus on ticks over 100 milliseconds:

/spark profiler start --only-ticks-over 100 --timeout 300

Save the report URL with the date, player count and activity that was occurring. A profile taken during an idle period can look healthy even when a farm or exploration trip causes severe lag.

What to look for in the report

  • Entity ticking: large groups of mobs, villagers, dropped items, minecarts or hidden entities.
  • Chunk generation and loading: exploration, teleportation and pregeneration work.
  • Plugin or mod tasks: scheduled jobs, scans, database calls and event handlers.
  • Block entities and redstone: hoppers, moving contraptions, storage networks and constantly changing blocks.
  • Garbage collection: long pauses or frequent collections rather than merely a high heap percentage.
  • Disk stalls: slow saves, region-file access or overloaded network storage.

Change one suspected cause, reproduce the same workload and run another profile. This gives you a before-and-after comparison instead of guessing which of several simultaneous edits helped.

Set view distance and simulation distance deliberately

Paper documents both values in chunks, with an allowed range of 3–32 and a documented default of 10. They control different work, so lowering one does not produce the same result as lowering the other.

Setting What it controls Documented range/default Performance effect and trade-off
view-distance Server-side radius of world data sent to clients 3–32 chunks; default 10 Lower values reduce chunk sending and client rendering work, but players see less distant terrain.
simulation-distance Radius in which living entities and game mechanics are updated 3–32 chunks; default 10 Lower values reduce entity and mechanic processing, but farms, mob behavior and crop activity can change outside the active radius.
entity-broadcast-range-percentage How far entities are sent to clients Paper does not state a universal performance default in the cited guidance Reducing it can lower network traffic and client work; players may not see entities until they are closer.
use-native-transport Native network transport implementation true is documented as a Linux performance option May improve Linux server networking; validate the result with a profile rather than assuming a gain on every platform.

A practical distance test

  1. Stop the server and back up server.properties.
  2. Reduce view-distance modestly, for example from 10 to 8, while keeping the setting within 3–32.
  3. Leave simulation-distance unchanged for the first test so you can identify which workload changed.
  4. Restart, repeat the same player activity and compare Spark tick times, chunk-loading time and player reports.
  5. If entity or farm processing is the problem, test a lower simulation-distance separately and verify that required farms still function.
  6. Restore the backup if visibility, mob behavior or redstone timing becomes unacceptable.

Reducing both values at once may produce a larger improvement, but it hides which setting solved the bottleneck and makes gameplay side effects harder to diagnose.

Reduce entity, redstone and command workloads

Loaded chunks are the unit that turns world content into ongoing work. A compact area containing thousands of entities, constantly changing blocks and per-tick commands can lag even when the machine’s average CPU and memory graphs look comfortable.

Entities and pathfinding

Microsoft’s Bedrock guidance recommends limiting entities in loaded chunks, especially entities hidden from players. Pathfinding and artificial intelligence consume server time, while rendering the same entities consumes client time. Look for villager halls, animal breeders, item piles, minecart collections and mobs trapped in water streams. Remove unnecessary entities, spread farms across areas that are not active simultaneously, or redesign systems so they operate in batches rather than continuously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redstone and block entities

Hoppers, large storage systems, moving machines and rapidly changing blocks can dominate a profile. Disable clocks that run when no one needs them, add shutoff switches to farms and avoid thousands of constantly scanned inventories. Make changes with the owner of each build present; a performance fix that silently changes a machine’s timing is a compatibility failure.

Commands, scripts and plugins

Microsoft advises limiting per-tick commands and scripts and splitting long operations across intervals. Replace one huge scan with smaller batches scheduled over several ticks. In Spark, inspect scheduled plugin tasks and event handlers rather than assuming the plugin name alone identifies the problem. Update or remove a task only after confirming that it occupies a significant share of tick time during the incident.

Particles, sounds and add-on content

Excessive particles and sounds increase client work and can add network traffic. Bedrock worlds also pay for add-on file counts and pack sizes. Keep effects proportional to the number of players who can see them, and test resource or behavior packs individually when only some clients experience stutter.

Understand “Can’t keep up,” TPS and the watchdog

Paper describes “Can’t keep up” as a warning that the server has taken 10 or more seconds to finish the current tick. It is not itself a crash, but it signals severe lag that can eventually lead to one. Treat the message as an incident marker: note what players were doing and inspect a profile from that interval.

A healthy target is about 0.05 seconds (50 milliseconds) per tick, equivalent to 20 ticks per second. The server-properties reference documents max-tick-time=60000 by default; a single tick lasting 60 seconds is considered crashed by the watchdog. Raising or disabling the watchdog does not make a slow tick faster. It only allows the server to remain unresponsive longer, so change it only for a specific recovery policy and after addressing the workload.

Interpret Java memory correctly

A heap graph that appears nearly full is not proof of a memory leak. Paper explains that Java’s heap commonly grows toward the -Xmx limit and that garbage collection rarely returns all unused memory to the operating system. Focus on evidence:

  • Out-of-memory errors or process termination indicate an actual capacity problem.
  • Long or frequent garbage-collection pauses indicate a memory-management problem even when the process has not crashed.
  • A container or hosting-panel limit lower than the Java allocation can terminate the process before Java reaches its nominal maximum.
  • Stable tick times with a high but stable heap are not, by themselves, a reason to add RAM.

When a panel limit is too close to -Xmx, Paper gives reducing -Xmx by 1–2 GB as an initial rule of thumb, or increasing or disabling the panel limit when you control it. Leave headroom for the operating system, native libraries and the panel itself. Change one allocation at a time and watch garbage-collection times and crash logs.

Paper settings and JVM flags: apply only after profiling

Paper’s how-to index identifies Aikar’s flags as JVM options designed for Paper performance. They are not a universal cure. Check that the Java version and Paper build are compatible with the flag set, keep a copy of the previous launch command and validate the result with Spark under the same workload. If tick time, collection pauses or stability worsens, revert the flags rather than stacking additional presets.

Similarly, do not copy a large “optimized” configuration without recording each change. Paper cautions that broad presets can cause strange farm, entity or redstone behavior. A configuration is successful only when it improves the measured workload while preserving the mechanics your players rely on.

Choose hardware from the measured bottleneck

Upgrade hardware only when the profile and operating-system metrics show a sustained limit. The relevant bottlenecks are different:

Observed bottleneck Upgrade or change that can help What it will not fix
Sustained tick-bound CPU time on one busy thread A faster single-thread CPU, fewer expensive entities or better plugin logic Client FPS problems or a world stalled on slow storage
Out-of-memory crashes or excessive garbage collection More RAM, a compatible heap allocation and removal of memory-heavy workloads High tick cost caused by redstone, pathfinding or chunk generation
Chunk generation, loading or save stalls Faster storage and reduced simultaneous generation AI-heavy farms or a saturated network connection
Network latency or packet loss Better network path, adequate upload capacity and a geographically suitable server location Ticks already delayed by CPU work

The available guidance does not establish a universal CPU model, RAM amount or guaranteed TPS increase. Player count, chunk-generation rate, distances, entities, plugins or mods, storage, network latency and gameplay compatibility must be evaluated together.

Bedrock-specific simulation and ticking areas

Microsoft describes Bedrock simulation distance as the range that controls entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth and fluid movement. It costs more than render distance because it affects both the server and the client. Lower it when game-mechanics work is the bottleneck, but check farms and contraptions afterward.

Ticking areas remain active without a nearby player, so keep them minimal. Microsoft’s current guidance allows up to 10 ticking areas per world and up to 100 chunks per area; those are limits, not targets. Remove unused areas and avoid covering large automated builds when a player-triggered activation system can provide the same gameplay.

A controlled optimization procedure

  1. Classify the symptom. Confirm whether players have delayed actions and low TPS, or only low FPS. Record player count, dimensions and the activity that triggers the issue.
  2. Capture a baseline. During the incident, run Spark for 600 seconds, or use the 300-second and over-100-millisecond variants for shorter events. Save the report URL and console timing.
  3. Secure the rollback. Stop the server completely and back up the world and configuration before editing.
  4. Test distance settings. Change only view-distance or only simulation-distance, staying within 3–32, then reproduce the same workload.
  5. Remove confirmed workload. Cap or disperse entities, disable unnecessary redstone clocks, batch commands and investigate plugin tasks identified by Spark.
  6. Check memory and limits. Review garbage-collection pauses, -Xmx, panel limits, crash logs and operating-system memory rather than relying on a single usage meter.
  7. Check storage and network evidence. Correlate save or chunk stalls with disk latency and correlate rubber-banding with packet loss or upload saturation.
  8. Apply compatible software changes. Consider Paper or JVM changes, including documented Aikar flags, only after checking compatibility and retaining the old launch configuration.
  9. Re-profile. Run Spark during the same scenario. Keep a change only when tick time, stability and required gameplay improve together.

Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Lag begins when players explore new terrain

Profile chunk generation and loading. Lower view distance temporarily, limit simultaneous exploration or pregenerate required areas during a maintenance window. Faster storage can help when disk latency is the measured limit, but it will not remove entity or plugin costs.

Only a crowded farm causes the slowdown

Inspect entity ticking, pathfinding and block entities. Reduce the number of active mobs and item entities, add an on/off control and keep the farm outside areas that every player loads. Retest with the same number of players and the same collection cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players see delayed actions but CPU and RAM graphs look normal

Average utilization can hide a single tick-bound thread, short spikes, disk waits or a network problem. Use Spark during the delay, inspect tick length rather than total CPU percentage, and compare server logs with packet and storage metrics.

The server crashes after long freezes

Check for the 10-second “Can’t keep up” warnings, watchdog output at the 60,000-millisecond default, garbage-collection pauses and out-of-memory messages. Do not simply disable the watchdog; remove the workload or correct the resource limit that caused the freeze.

Lowering simulation distance breaks a farm

That is an expected trade-off: entities and mechanics outside the active radius are not updated. Restore the previous value or relocate the farm so players remain within its required simulation range, then address the farm’s entity or redstone cost directly.

One player reports stutter while everyone else is fine

Treat it as client FPS or network troubleshooting first. Have the player test lower graphics, particles and client render distance, and compare the result with another network connection. Server-side distance changes are unlikely to solve an isolated rendering limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When panel access is limited

If a hosting panel does not provide shell access, Spark controls or useful logs, ask the provider whether it supports current Paper builds, Spark report access, documented CPU and RAM limits, storage performance information and a clear backup process. Request the panel’s actual Java memory ceiling and whether it is separate from -Xmx. A provider cannot diagnose a tick problem responsibly from a generic “more RAM” recommendation alone.

Keep your own dated backups and configuration history even when the host performs backups. If support applies an optimization preset, ask for the exact files and settings changed so you can correlate the change with a new profile and revert it if farms, entities or redstone behave differently.

How to compare two server setups fairly

Compare configurations under the same world, player count and activity. Record:

  • Median and worst tick time or TPS during the incident.
  • Player count and the rate of new chunk generation.
  • View distance and simulation distance.
  • Entity counts, plugin or mod workload and redstone activity.
  • Heap allocation, garbage-collection pauses and any container limit.
  • Storage latency during chunk access and saves.
  • Network latency, packet loss and upload capacity.
  • Gameplay compatibility, administrative control and recurring cost.

A setup that posts a higher headline TPS while changing distances, reducing entities or using a smaller test workload is not an apples-to-apples improvement. Keep those variables visible in the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision rule

Profile first, then make the smallest reversible change that addresses the measured cause. Lower view distance when chunk transmission or rendering is expensive; lower simulation distance when entity and mechanic ticking is expensive; remove or batch workloads that consume tick time; correct heap and panel limits when memory evidence supports it; and buy faster CPU, storage or network capacity only when the corresponding bottleneck is sustained. Repeat the same test after every change so a smoother server is a measured result rather than a lucky side effect.
