The fastest way to improve a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server is to lower the settings that create the most work: view-distance and tick-distance. View distance increases the chunks the server must load and send, while tick distance increases the chunks it must simulate every game tick. Start with a conservative view distance, keep tick distance lower than it, restart the server after editing the configuration, and adjust only after checking your server’s TPS and player experience.

What causes lag on a Bedrock server?

Bedrock server lag usually comes from one of three bottlenecks: CPU time spent simulating active chunks, memory and network work required to keep distant chunks available, or an excessive number of entities and block updates. A server can have plenty of bandwidth but still lag when too many mobs and redstone machines are ticking. It can also have a capable CPU yet struggle when a very large view distance forces it to load and transmit more chunks for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server properties reference warns that higher values of both tick-distance and view-distance have a performance impact. Those settings are the safest first changes because they are explicit server controls with documented limits.

View distance and tick distance: what each setting does

Setting Default Allowed values Main resource cost What players notice
view-distance 32 chunks Positive integers of 5 or greater Memory and network, plus chunk-loading work How far terrain remains visible and available around a player
tick-distance 4 chunks Integers from 4 through 12 CPU, because active chunks are simulated every tick How far crops, mobs, redstone and other game logic continue running

View distance

view-distance is the maximum view distance in chunks that the server allows. Raising it gives players a larger loaded horizon, but the server has to load and send more chunk data. That increases memory pressure and network traffic, especially when several players are spread across different areas.

The official default is 32. The documented minimum is 5. A value below 5 is not valid for the Bedrock Dedicated Server property.

Tick distance

tick-distance controls how many chunks away from each player the world is ticked. Ticking means calculating ongoing game behavior such as mob AI, crop growth, fluids and redstone updates. A larger value therefore increases CPU work even when players are not looking directly at those chunks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official default is 4, and the allowed range is 4 to 12. Because it controls simulation rather than visibility, it should normally remain lower than view-distance.

How the settings relate to Java terminology

Guides that cover both editions commonly describe Bedrock’s tick-distance as the equivalent of Java Edition’s simulation distance. The terms are useful for comparison, but the exact setting names, limits and server behavior are edition-specific. Use the Bedrock property names in a Bedrock server’s configuration file.

Before changing anything

  1. Confirm that you are editing the active server. If you run more than one world or instance, identify the Bedrock Dedicated Server directory that the running process actually uses.
  2. Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit a file while the process is writing it. Use your hosting panel’s Stop control or the server console’s normal shutdown command.
  3. Back up the configuration and world. Copy server.properties and make a current world backup so you can restore the previous values if a change causes unexpected behavior.
  4. Record a baseline. Note the current player count, whether lag happens during exploration or at a base, and the TPS or performance metric exposed by your host or monitoring system.

Step-by-step: tune the Bedrock server properties

1. Open server.properties

In a standard Bedrock Dedicated Server installation, the file is in the server’s main directory. Managed hosts usually expose it through a file manager or a configuration editor. Open it as plain text and preserve the existing key names and formatting.

2. Set a conservative view distance

Find the line beginning with view-distance= and enter a whole number of at least 5. If the server is currently using the default 32 and players report lag while exploring, lowering this value is the most direct way to reduce chunk-loading, memory and network pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosting guides often suggest a view distance around 6 to 8 for general play and 4 to 6 for very large servers, but those are practical recommendations rather than official Bedrock requirements. Because Bedrock’s documented minimum is 5, use 5 or higher; select the highest value your hardware and player count can sustain.

3. Set tick distance below view distance

Find tick-distance= and choose an integer from 4 to 12. Keeping it below the view distance lets players see a broader area without asking the CPU to simulate every visible chunk. A commonly suggested starting point for a normal survival server is tick distance 6 with view distance 10, but this is secondary guidance, not a guaranteed optimum.

If the server is CPU-bound, leave tick distance at the default 4 or use another low value within the allowed range. Raising it should be justified by a need for farms, mobs or redstone to remain active farther from players.

4. Save, then perform a full restart

Save the file, close the editor and start the server again. A full stop-and-start is preferable to a reload: one operational guide reports that a reload may not apply these settings correctly. Treat restart as part of the change procedure rather than assuming the running process has picked up the new values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test one change at a time

Let players perform the activity that normally causes lag, such as exploring new terrain, visiting a large farm or traveling between bases. Watch TPS or the equivalent server performance measure while noting player count and location. If performance improves, keep the change; if the visual range is unacceptable, raise view-distance gradually. Change tick-distance separately so you can tell whether CPU simulation or chunk delivery is the limiting factor.

Choosing values for different server situations

Situation First adjustment Reasoning What to monitor
Small private world with few players Keep tick distance near 4; increase view distance only if performance remains stable A small player count creates less total chunk demand, but one player can still generate expensive exploration or entity activity TPS during exploration and memory usage while new terrain loads
Typical survival server Try the secondary starting combination of tick distance 6 and view distance 10, then adjust It provides a modest visual range while keeping simulation smaller than visibility CPU utilization, TPS and network traffic as players spread out
Large or highly populated server Use a lower view distance, commonly around 4 to 6 in hosting guidance, while keeping tick distance at the low end Every additional player can create another active area; lower visibility limits chunk delivery and memory pressure TPS during peak concurrency and chunk-loading delays
Redstone- or farm-heavy world Reduce tick distance before reducing view distance further Simulation distance determines how far machines, mobs and crops continue to run, so it directly affects CPU work TPS near farms and CPU saturation

These are starting strategies, not specifications. Microsoft documents defaults and limits, but does not publish a universal performance preset. The best value depends on CPU capacity, available memory, network conditions, world size, entity count and how many players are online at once.

How player count changes the trade-off

Distance settings apply around players, so the same value can behave very differently on a private world and a busy community server. One player standing still may leave most of the world untouched. Ten players spread across ten bases can create ten separate areas that require chunk loading, sending and simulation. Exploration is especially demanding because newly discovered terrain must be generated or loaded and then transmitted.

Measure during the busiest realistic scenario rather than during an empty-server test. If peak concurrency causes lag, lower view-distance first when chunk delivery, memory or network usage is the problem. Lower tick-distance first when CPU usage and TPS collapse around farms, mobs or machines. A setting that works for two players is not automatically suitable for twenty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce entities and block-update load

Distance settings cannot compensate for an overloaded area. Secondary performance guidance identifies mobs, dropped items, armor stands and redstone contraptions as common sources of excessive work.

Control mob populations

  • Remove abandoned animal pens and duplicate breeding systems.
  • Check mob farms for collection failures that leave large numbers of entities alive.
  • Clear hostile mobs and other accumulated entities in areas where players report the worst TPS.
  • Design farms so entities are separated, processed and removed rather than allowed to accumulate indefinitely.

Clean up dropped items

Dropped blocks and items are entities too. A broken storage system, quarry or large building project can create hundreds of item entities in one place. Collect them, move them into containers, or remove the source of the drops. If lag disappears when an area is cleared, the entity load—not the global view distance—was probably the immediate cause.

Audit armor stands and decorative entities

Armor stands and similar decorative objects are easy to overlook because they do not behave like hostile mobs. Large shopping districts, event areas and spawn builds can contain enough of them to add measurable overhead. Remove unused objects and avoid duplicating decorative entities when blocks or other static designs will work.

Inspect redstone machines

Rapid clocks, constantly powered components, item sorters and farms that run when nobody is using them can consume CPU continuously. Add switches, operating schedules or player-activated controls so machines are idle when their output is not needed. When diagnosing a lag spike, compare TPS with the machine’s location and temporarily disable the suspected circuit.

Diagnose the type of bottleneck

Symptoms of CPU pressure

  • TPS falls when players approach farms, redstone systems or dense mob areas.
  • Blocks take longer to break or place even though terrain is already visible.
  • Reducing tick distance produces a clear improvement.

Address CPU pressure by lowering tick-distance, disabling unnecessary machines and reducing entity populations. Increasing memory alone will not fix a workload that requires more CPU time per tick.

Symptoms of memory or network pressure

  • Lag appears while several players explore different directions.
  • New terrain arrives slowly or players see delayed chunk updates.
  • Lowering view-distance helps more than lowering tick distance.

Use a smaller view distance and avoid setting it far above what players need. Because view distance is measured in chunks, a seemingly modest increase can require many more chunks around every player.

Symptoms of a local hotspot

If only one base or farm causes trouble, global distance settings may not be the primary issue. Compare TPS near the area with TPS in an empty region, then inspect entities, redstone and continuously running farms there. Fixing the hotspot preserves the rest of the world’s visual range.

Why keeping tick distance below view distance works

Players generally want to see terrain beyond the area where game logic must run. A lower tick distance allows the server to simulate a compact ring around each player while showing a wider visual area. This separates two costs: visibility and chunk transmission on one side, continuous CPU simulation on the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The arrangement is not magic. If view distance is still too high for the available memory or network, players can experience chunk delays even with a low tick distance. Conversely, a large tick distance can overload the CPU despite a modest view distance. Tune both values independently, with tick distance normally lower.

Common tuning mistakes

  • Changing several variables at once. If view distance, tick distance and entity counts all change together, you cannot identify which action helped or hurt.
  • Testing only when nobody is online. The important workload is the normal peak player count, especially when people explore in different directions.
  • Assuming visible chunks must all tick. A wider horizon does not require the same simulation radius; that is the reason to keep tick distance lower.
  • Ignoring local causes. A single runaway farm or pile of dropped items can create severe lag even when global settings are reasonable.
  • Editing the wrong instance or skipping the restart. Confirm the active directory and perform a full stop-and-start after saving.
  • Chasing an arbitrary preset. Values such as 6/10 are starting points, not guarantees. Hardware, world activity and player distribution determine the result.

Settings that need caution

entity-broadcast-range-percentage

Some server guides discuss entity-broadcast-range-percentage as a way to reduce the distance at which entities are sent to clients. The available references do not establish a Bedrock-specific default or a reliable allowed range: published figures conflict, and one reference is a general Java-era entry. Do not apply a claimed range to Bedrock without confirming it against the documentation for your exact server version.

Maintenance checklist

  • Keep a backup of server.properties and the world before major tuning.
  • Record the current values, player count and TPS before each change.
  • Change one distance setting or one entity source at a time.
  • Keep tick-distance within 4–12 and view-distance at 5 or higher.
  • Keep tick distance below view distance unless you have a specific, tested reason not to.
  • Restart the server after changing the properties.
  • Test during the same activity and player load that normally produces lag.
  • Recheck mob farms, dropped items, armor stands and redstone whenever a local area becomes slow.
  • Prefer the lowest settings that meet your players’ visual and simulation requirements, then raise them gradually.

When hardware changes are necessary

Configuration is the first step because it costs nothing and reveals which resource is limiting the server. If a low tick distance, conservative view distance and controlled entity load still produce poor TPS at the target player count, the remaining constraint may be the host’s CPU, memory or network capacity. The available guidance does not specify a universal hardware upgrade, so select hardware only after monitoring identifies the saturated resource.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No physical product is required to apply these fixes. You need access to the active Bedrock Dedicated Server files or hosting panel, permission to stop and start the instance, a reliable world backup, and a way to observe TPS or an equivalent performance metric. Hardware upgrades should follow that diagnosis rather than precede it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bedrock server performance setting?

There is no universal best value. Microsoft documents a default of 32 for view-distance and 4 for tick-distance, with allowed values of at least 5 and 4–12 respectively. Start lower than the defaults when lag is present, then raise values gradually while watching TPS.

Should view distance be higher than tick distance?

Usually, yes. A higher view distance can preserve a useful visual horizon while the lower tick distance limits CPU-heavy simulation. Keep both within their documented limits and test the combination under real player load.

Does lowering view distance improve TPS?

It can, particularly when chunk loading, memory or network work is the bottleneck. If TPS falls near redstone machines or farms instead, lowering tick distance and reducing entities is more likely to help.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Can I set Bedrock tick distance below 4?

No. The documented Bedrock Dedicated Server range is 4 through 12. Use 4 as the lowest value and reduce entity or redstone activity if CPU pressure remains.

Can I use Java server-property values on Bedrock?

No. Java and Bedrock use different property names and limits. Bedrock uses view-distance and tick-distance in its own server.properties file; Java-oriented ranges may not apply.

Do these changes require buying new hardware?

No. Distance tuning, entity cleanup, monitoring and a full restart require no physical product. If performance remains poor after those steps, identify whether CPU, memory or network capacity is saturated before choosing an upgrade.

Bottom line

Start with the controls Microsoft documents: lower view-distance when chunk delivery, memory or network work is excessive, lower tick-distance when CPU simulation is excessive, and keep tick distance below view distance. Remove runaway entities and redstone workloads, restart after editing, and test one change at a time at realistic player counts. The right settings are the lowest values that preserve the visual range and active farms your players actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to reduce Minecraft Bedrock server lag?

Lower view-distance and, when CPU simulation is the problem, lower tick-distance. Restart the server, then verify the result during the activity and player count that normally cause lag.

What are the official Bedrock distance limits?

tick-distance accepts integers from 4 through 12, with a default of 4. view-distance accepts positive integers of 5 or greater, with a default of 32.

Why is my Bedrock server lagging near one farm?

A local concentration of mobs, dropped items, armor stands or redstone may be overwhelming the area. Inspect and disable that workload before reducing global distance settings further.

Do I need to restart after editing server.properties?

Yes. Stop the server cleanly, save the file, and perform a full restart. A reload may not apply these distance settings reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most Bedrock servers, reduce the documented distance settings first: keep tick-distance lower than view-distance, watch TPS under real load, and remove entity or redstone hotspots. Tune gradually instead of relying on an arbitrary preset, and upgrade hardware only after monitoring shows which resource is saturated.
