Set ItemStackSizeMultiplier in the server’s SandboxSettings.ini file. A value of 1.0 is the default; hosting guides commonly document values from 1.0 through 30.0. For example, ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0 doubles the configured stack allowance, while 10.0 is a much more permissive setting. The exact result is item-dependent.
Stop the server before editing, make a copy of the save and configuration, then restart after saving. The file location and whether a change affects an already-created world vary by hosting provider, so confirm the path and world-loading method on your installation rather than assuming one universal location.

What the stack-size multiplier does
ItemStackSizeMultiplier controls how many units of an item can occupy one inventory slot. It changes stack capacity; it does not create items, increase player inventory slots, alter item weight, or change storage containers that use a separate rule. The multiplier’s effect also depends on the item, so two items may not display identical final capacities after the same value is applied.
Third-party server guides generally list 1.0 as the default and a supported range of 1.0 to 30.0. Those figures are not confirmed in an official developer or publisher reference, so treat them as the range your host’s current configuration accepts and verify after a restart. Values should be written as plain numbers, such as 2.0, not with a percent sign or a multiplication symbol.

The setting belongs in the [SandboxSettings] section of SandboxSettings.ini. A minimal entry is:

ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0Keep the section header and the key spelling exactly as shown. A typo in either can leave the server running with its previous value.

Prepare the server before changing the file
Do the maintenance work while the server is offline. Several hosting instructions warn that editing a live configuration can be overwritten when the process stops or restarts, which can make a correct change appear to have failed.
- Schedule a short outage: tell connected players to log out and wait until the server process is fully stopped.
- Back up the world: download or snapshot the complete save directory, not just the text file. Keep the backup outside the live server folder.
- Preserve the original configuration: copy the existing
SandboxSettings.iniand give the copy a date-based name so you can restore it. - Record the current value: if the key already exists, note its old number before changing it.
- Use the host’s editor or FTP/SFTP access: avoid editing a local copy and forgetting to upload it to the active instance.
If you cannot stop the server yourself, use the provider’s Stop or Restart control and wait for the status to show that the process is offline before opening the file.
Find the active SandboxSettings.ini
There is no single path used by every Abiotic Factor dedicated-server installation. The location can depend on the host, operating system, world name, and whether the provider stores settings in a control panel. Check the host’s file browser or FTP root first, then look for the path that matches your installation.

Search by filename rather than by guessing folders. If more than one copy exists, identify which one is loaded by the launch configuration or the provider’s documentation. Editing an unused copy produces no in-game change.

Put the header immediately above the key unless your host supplies a different generated format. If the panel regenerates the file, make the change through that panel instead of fighting an automated template.
Change the value through FTP or a file manager
Use this sequence when your host provides direct access to the server files.
- Stop the server. In the host panel, choose Stop and wait until the console and status page confirm that the process has exited.
- Create backups. Download the complete world folder and the current configuration file. Do not overwrite your only backup with the edited version.
- Open the active world or configuration directory. Start with the per-world path shown above. If it is absent, check the provider’s documented general configuration directory.
- Open or create
SandboxSettings.ini. If the provider supplies a generated file, edit that file rather than creating a second file elsewhere. - Ensure the section exists. Add
[SandboxSettings]on its own line if the file does not already contain it. - Add or replace the key. Enter one line in this exact form:
ItemStackSizeMultiplier=2.0. Use a decimal number and do not add spaces around the equals sign unless the host’s template already requires a specific style. - Save and upload. Confirm that the remote timestamp and file size change. With FTP, make sure the editor actually uploaded the saved file rather than leaving it in a temporary local directory.
- Start the server. Use the host panel’s Start command and wait for the server to finish loading the world.
- Test in game. Pick up or move enough of one item to exceed its former stack limit. Check the displayed quantity in an inventory slot and test a second item, because the multiplier is item-dependent.
Use a conservative first value such as 2.0 when you are validating the process. Once the server demonstrably loads the file, stop it again, make a new backup, and adjust the number if your community wants a larger change.
Use a hosting control panel when available
A panel is preferable to manual editing when it exposes the setting because it normally writes the correct file and preserves the provider’s expected format. Open the server’s configuration or Settings page, locate the sandbox or gameplay settings, find the item-stack multiplier, enter the number, save, and restart.

Do not edit the file and the panel at the same time. Many panels regenerate configuration files on save or startup; a manual change can disappear if the panel’s stored value is still different. After saving through the panel, reopen the setting and verify that the number remains present before starting the server.
If the panel has no item-stack field, use its file manager or FTP access. If it offers an import, custom INI, or launch-parameter field, follow that provider’s method and keep a copy of the resulting configuration for rollback.
Existing worlds: why the change may not appear
Guides disagree about when sandbox settings are read. Some hosting documentation describes the settings as global and autosaved; another guide says sandbox values are set when a world is created and stored inside the world save, with no automatically generated INI. Because those models conflict, changing the file on an existing world is host-specific.
After restarting, test the current world before creating a replacement. If the inventory still uses the old capacities, ask the host which of these mechanisms it uses:
- Live global configuration: the server reads the INI at startup and applies the new value to the existing world.
- World-embedded settings: the value is stored in the save and may require the host’s supported migration or world-setting workflow.
- Explicit custom path: the server reads an INI only when a launch option points to it.
XGamingServer’s guidance specifically suggests creating the file and loading it with the -SandboxIniPath launch parameter when an automatic INI is not generated. That parameter is not a universal guarantee: use it only if your host permits custom launch arguments and tells you where the executable expects the file. A typical provider workflow is to place the file in an accessible configuration directory, add the parameter in the startup command, stop the server, and start it again; the exact argument syntax and path must match the host’s panel.

Never test this on the only copy of a long-running world. Keep the original save untouched until you have confirmed that players can connect and that the desired stack behavior persists through another stop and start.
Choose a multiplier without surprising players
The right number depends on how much inventory management your group wants to retain. The values below are practical starting points, not measured performance guarantees.

Change one variable at a time. If you alter several sandbox options together, you will not know which entry caused an unexpected result. Tell players the chosen value before they reorganize storage, and keep the previous configuration so you can return to it without guessing.

The setting reverts after restart
The most common explanation is that the server was still running when the file was edited, or that a panel regenerated the file. Stop the process, edit the remote file, save, confirm its timestamp, and start the server only after the change is complete. If the panel has a separate saved-settings page, update that page as well.
Nothing changes in the game
- Confirm the key is spelled
ItemStackSizeMultiplier, including capitalization. - Confirm the key is under
[SandboxSettings], not under a different section. - Check that the number is a plain decimal such as
2.0. - Verify that you edited the world or configuration directory used by the running instance.
- Stop and start the server rather than relying on a live reload.
- Test more than one item; the effect is not identical for every item.
The file is missing
Some installations do not generate an INI automatically. Search the entire server tree, check the provider’s custom-configuration instructions, and ask whether the world stores sandbox values internally. If the host supports it, use its documented -SandboxIniPath launch option to point the server at a file you created. Do not add a launch argument when the panel does not allow custom startup parameters.

The server fails to load after editing
Stop the server and restore the backed-up file immediately. A malformed section, accidental extra characters, or an unsupported value can prevent the configuration from being parsed. Start with only the original file, then add the single multiplier line again. If the server still fails, provide the host with the exact file and console error rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Players report different results
Make sure everyone reconnects after the restart and is looking at the same server world. Client-side inventory displays can be stale until a relog. Also check whether a particular item has its own stack rule; the multiplier changes the server’s stack calculation but does not promise one universal quantity for every item.
Verify, document, and roll back
Keep a short change record containing the date, world name, old value, new value, file path, and whether the test survived a full restart. This makes later troubleshooting much faster, especially when a provider moves a world or restores a backup.
To roll back, stop the server, replace the edited file with the preserved copy (or set the previous panel value), and start the server. If the setting is embedded in the world or supplied through a launch parameter, reverse that host-specific mechanism as well. Test one inventory item after the rollback before declaring the old behavior restored.
As of October 14, 2026, public guidance on this setting comes from hosting-provider tutorials, a Steam community guide, and a community dedicated-server repository rather than an official Abiotic Factor configuration reference. Treat the key name and common range as strong practical guidance, but treat the file path and existing-world behavior as installation details that your host must confirm.
