Rust’s vanilla server does not provide a server.cfg setting for larger item stacks. The documented route is to install the Oxide (uMod) mod framework, add the community StackSizeController plugin, let it create its configuration, set stack multipliers in oxide/config/StackSizeController.json (or use its console commands), and reload the plugin.
What you need before changing stack limits
Stack sizes are hardcoded in an unmodified Rust server. Adding a line to server.cfg will not change how many items a stack can hold. The method described here requires server-side mod support and administrative access.
- A running Rust dedicated server that you control.
- Oxide (uMod) installed and loading correctly.
- The StackSizeController plugin downloaded into the server’s
oxide/pluginsdirectory. - Shell, file-manager or hosting-panel access to the server files if you plan to edit JSON.
- Administrator access to the server console if you plan to use commands.
- A current backup of the plugin configuration and, preferably, the complete server configuration.
StackSizeController is a community plugin listed on uMod and attributed there to AnExiledDev. Its exact version and compatibility with a particular Rust or Oxide build should be checked in the listing and against your server before deployment; those details are not established here.
Install Oxide and StackSizeController
1. Install Oxide (uMod)
Install the Oxide build intended for your Rust server through your host’s supported mod-install process or the official Oxide distribution process. Restart the server after installation and check the startup output for Oxide loading messages. If the server starts as a completely vanilla instance, the plugin cannot load and no stack setting will take effect.

2. Add the plugin file
Download the StackSizeController plugin from its uMod listing and place its plugin file in the server’s oxide/plugins directory. Keep the filename supplied by the plugin; do not put it in oxide/data. The data directory is not the location used for stack-size configuration.
3. Start the server once
Start or restart the server after copying the plugin. The first successful load generates the plugin’s configuration file at:

oxide/config/StackSizeController.jsonIf that file does not appear, inspect the server console for an Oxide error, a missing dependency, a permissions problem or a plugin-load failure before attempting to edit anything.
Choose configuration-file editing or console commands

The configuration file offers finer granularity because it includes per-item settings. The cited commands are broader: one applies to every category and the other applies to a named category.
Set multipliers in StackSizeController.json
1. Stop or quiesce changes before editing
Use your host’s normal maintenance procedure before editing a live JSON file. Make a copy of StackSizeController.json so you can restore the previous working version if the server rejects the file. JSON syntax is strict: an extra comma, missing quote or unmatched brace can prevent the plugin from reading the configuration.
2. Open the generated file
Open oxide/config/StackSizeController.json with a text editor that preserves plain text and UTF-8 formatting. The generated file contains the plugin’s global, category and per-item settings. Keep the keys created by the plugin and change only the values you understand. Do not search for or edit a similarly named file under oxide/data; that is not the documented stack-size configuration location.

3. Enter a numeric multiplier
Multipliers are plain numbers. For a five-times policy, enter 5, not 5x. A value of 2 represents a two-times multiplier, while 1 leaves the normal limit unchanged. Use the global setting when one policy should apply broadly, category settings when a group needs a different limit, and per-item settings when an individual item must be treated differently.
The plugin’s documentation describes 2,147,483,647 as the maximum stack size, citing a hardcoded Rust limitation. That is an upper bound, not a recommendation: extremely large stacks can change the game’s economy and storage balance, so select values that match your server rules.
4. Save valid JSON and reload
Save the file without changing its name or location. Start the server if it was stopped, then reload the plugin from the server console:
oxide.reload StackSizeControllerWatch the console for a successful reload or a parse error. A parse error means the previous backup should be restored and the JSON corrected before trying again.

The plugin listing and hosting guides cite two commands. They were reported in a command snippet rather than verified on a live server, so confirm the syntax against the plugin’s current help output or documentation for your installed version.
Apply one multiplier to all stacks
stacksizecontroller.setallstacks 2This example requests a multiplier of 2 for all categories. Replace 2 with the plain numeric multiplier you want; do not append an “x”. Because this command affects all categories, use it only when a uniform policy is intended.

Apply a multiplier to one category
stacksizecontroller.setstackcat [category name] [multiplier]Replace [category name] with the category name recognized by your plugin configuration and [multiplier] with a number such as 5. The square-bracket notation is explanatory syntax, not text to paste literally. Category names must match the plugin’s available names; if the command is rejected, inspect the generated configuration or the plugin’s current command help rather than guessing.
Reload after command changes when required
If the command changes values but the game does not immediately display the new limits, run:

How precedence and granularity should be planned
StackSizeController exposes three useful scopes:
- Global: a broad default for the server.
- Category: a different multiplier for a group of items.
- Per item: an override for a specific item.
A practical policy is to establish the global value first, then adjust categories that have deliberately small vanilla limits, and finally add per-item exceptions. The cited guides specifically note that some vanilla categories have intentionally small limits and suggest customizing those categories afterward. Keep a written record of each exception so later edits do not accidentally erase the intended balance.

Verify that the new limits actually work
Do not treat a successful reload message as proof that every item changed. Verify in game with a controlled test:
- Join the server with an account that can access the relevant inventory or container.
- Use a test item whose vanilla limit is known to be lower than your selected multiplier.
- Collect or move enough of that item to force a stack split or merge.
- Confirm that the resulting stack accepts the intended quantity and that an excess amount creates a separate stack rather than disappearing.
- Test at least one item from each category you customized, including any per-item exception.
- Restart the server and repeat a small test if you used console commands, because command persistence has not been established.
Testing should be done with ordinary player permissions as well as administrator tools when possible. Administrative inventory commands can mask a configuration problem that a normal pickup or crafting action would reveal.

Troubleshoot common failures
The server ignores a value in server.cfg
This is expected for vanilla Rust. Stack-size limits are hardcoded there, and the cited guides state that changes require Oxide rather than a server.cfg entry. Install and verify Oxide, then use StackSizeController.
No StackSizeController.json file is created
- Confirm the plugin file is in
oxide/plugins, notoxide/dataor another directory. - Confirm Oxide itself loaded during startup.
- Check the console for the plugin’s load error and correct the reported dependency, permission or syntax issue.
- Restart once after correcting the problem so the plugin gets an opportunity to generate its configuration.
The plugin reload reports a JSON error
Restore the backup, then reapply one change at a time. Check every quote, brace, bracket and comma. Keep numeric multipliers as numbers, not strings with an “x” suffix. If the generated file uses a particular key structure, preserve that structure instead of replacing it with a hand-written schema.
A category command does nothing
Check the category name exactly as the plugin recognizes it. The command’s category argument is not a free-form description. Also verify that the multiplier is a plain number and that you have administrator console access. Since the cited command syntax has not been independently verified on a live server, consult the current plugin help or listing for your installed release if the command remains unavailable.
Some items retain small limits
Vanilla categories can have deliberately small limits. A global multiplier may not produce the policy you want for those groups, so add a category setting or a per-item override in the generated configuration. Test the affected category after reloading.

Determine whether the change was made in the JSON file or only through a console command. File edits are intended to persist across restarts. Persistence for the cited console commands has not been verified, so inspect oxide/config/StackSizeController.json after restarting and keep durable settings there when necessary.
Players still see the old stack size
Confirm that the reload completed without an error, then reconnect a test player and try a fresh pickup or transfer. Existing stacks may not visibly change until they are moved or merged. If a newly created stack still uses the old limit, review the active global, category and per-item values and check the console for a later plugin error.

Operational and gameplay considerations
Back up before every policy change
Keep dated copies of StackSizeController.json and note which multiplier each copy represents. A backup makes it possible to return to the last known-good configuration when a malformed edit prevents loading.
Change one scope at a time
Do not simultaneously alter global, category and per-item values while diagnosing a problem. Set a global baseline, reload and test; then add category exceptions; finally add individual overrides. This makes it possible to identify which scope produced an unexpected result.
Consider balance, storage and wipes
Larger stacks reduce the number of inventory slots and storage containers needed for the same resources. They can also change hauling risk, building-material logistics and the value of storage upgrades. Decide whether the multiplier should apply to every item or only selected categories, and document the policy for players before a wipe or major rule change.
Stay within the documented limit
StackSizeController documents 2,147,483,647 as the maximum stack size because of a hardcoded Rust limitation. Values above that documented maximum should not be used. The practical value for a server is usually much lower and depends on the balance you want to preserve.
Configuration versus commands: a decision checklist
- Choose the JSON file when settings must survive restarts, when you need per-item control, or when you want a versioned record of the server policy.
- Choose console commands for a quick all-stack or category experiment when you have admin-console access and can verify the result.
- Use a combination when you want to test a broad multiplier quickly, then record the final policy in the generated configuration.
- Always reload with
oxide.reload StackSizeControllerafter a file edit or whenever the plugin does not reflect a confirmed configuration change.
What is and is not established about compatibility
The available documentation identifies the Oxide/uMod framework, the StackSizeController plugin and the configuration path, commands and maximum value described above. It does not establish a specific plugin release, Oxide build, Rust build or compatibility date. Before installing on a production server, check the current plugin listing and your host’s mod framework support. If a Rust update causes loading errors, treat compatibility as a version-specific problem rather than assuming that an older configuration or command will continue to work unchanged.
