Outlook does not use one setting for every part of its window. The Folder Pane (folder tree), Reading Pane (message body), and message list each have different controls—and the available options depend on whether you use New Outlook, Classic Outlook, Outlook for Mac, or Outlook.com.
Use the section for your Outlook version below. If you are unsure which Windows version you have, check whether the app has a File tab. The File tab indicates Classic Outlook. New Outlook uses a simplified interface with a View settings command.
Quick answer
| Outlook version | Increase Folder Pane text | Increase Reading Pane text |
|---|---|---|
| New Outlook for Windows | View > View settings > Mail > Layout > Text size and spacing > Large | View > Zoom |
| Classic Outlook for Windows | Use Windows Text size or Display scaling; there is no current Folder Pane font control | Use the zoom control, or save a default zoom from an opened message |
| Outlook for Mac | Outlook > Settings > Fonts > display-size slider | Use the display-size setting or the Reading settings for preview text |
| Outlook.com | Use your browser’s zoom control | Use your browser’s zoom control |
New Outlook for Windows
Increase the Folder Pane and surrounding interface text
- Open Outlook and select View.
- Select View settings.
- Choose Mail, then select Layout.
- Under Text size and spacing, choose Large.
- Select Save.
The available choices are Small, Medium, and Large. This setting is documented mainly as a message-list setting, but in New Outlook it also changes the text presentation and spacing in the folder tree.

- Select an email so it appears in the Reading Pane.
- Select View.
- Select Zoom.
- Use the + control to enlarge the message. New Outlook supports values from 50% to 200%.
If Zoom is unavailable, select a message first. Outlook cannot zoom an empty Reading Pane. The zoom applies to the message currently being read; selecting another message can return the body to its default size.

Do not confuse the two settings: Text size and spacing enlarges Outlook’s interface, including the folder and message-list areas. Zoom enlarges the body of the selected email only.
Classic Outlook for Windows
Increase the Folder Pane font
Current Classic Outlook for Windows does not provide a normal built-in font-size setting for the Folder Pane. The old advice to use View > Navigation Pane > Options > Font applies to older Outlook versions, not current releases.
Also, changing Row Font or Column Font does not enlarge the folder tree. Those controls affect the message list only.
To make the Folder Pane easier to read, change Windows’ text size or display scaling.
Option 1: Enlarge Windows interface text
- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text size.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Display > Make text bigger.
Move the slider to the right and apply the change. This enlarges Windows interface text, including menu and icon text, and may affect other applications as well as Outlook.

Option 2: Scale the entire display
- Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Scale.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Scale and layout.
Select a larger percentage, such as 125% or 150%, if available. Display scaling enlarges more than text: buttons, icons, application controls, and other screen elements also become larger. It is usually the better choice when the Folder Pane, ribbon, and Outlook controls all look too small.
Increase the message-list font
If it is the list of messages—not the folder tree—that is too small, Classic Outlook has dedicated controls:
- Select Mail.
- Open View > View Settings.
- Select Other Settings.
- Select Column Font to change headings such as From and Subject.
- Select Row Font to change the subject lines and other text in message rows.
- Choose the font and size, confirm the dialogs, and select OK.
For preview text displayed beneath the sender or subject, use the Font button under Message Preview, where that option is available.
Increase the Reading Pane text temporarily
- Select an email in the message list.
- Click inside the Reading Pane.
- Drag the zoom control at the bottom of the Outlook window to the right.
Another method is to hold Ctrl while rolling the mouse wheel. Roll away from you to enlarge the message and toward you to reduce it.
This is a temporary, item-level zoom. When you select another message or folder, Outlook may return the Reading Pane to its default 100% zoom.

Save a default Reading Pane zoom preference
To make a larger size persist for messages opened in their own windows:

- On the ribbon, select Zoom. If it is hidden, select the More commands ellipsis (…) and then choose Zoom.
- Choose the required percentage.
- Select Remember my preference.
- Select OK.
This saved preference is different from dragging the temporary zoom control in the main Outlook window.
Moving the Reading Pane does not enlarge text
The command View > Reading Pane > Right, Bottom, or Off changes only the pane’s position or visibility. It does not change the font size. Use the zoom controls for message text instead.
Outlook for Mac
Change the main display size
- Open the Outlook menu in the macOS menu bar.
- Select Settings.
- Select Fonts.
- Move the display-size slider to the right.
This control is available in current Outlook for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Outlook 2024 for Mac, and Outlook 2021 for Mac. It changes the main Outlook display size and can make the folder and message areas easier to read.
Change message preview text
- Open Outlook > Settings.
- Select Reading.
- Under Preview font for message, choose the required font setting.
The preview-font setting controls how messages are displayed. It is separate from the font used when composing new messages or replies.

Outlook.com in a browser
Outlook.com does not provide a dedicated control that enlarges only the folder tree or received-message body. Use your browser’s page zoom instead.
In Microsoft Edge:
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Zoom.
- Choose a percentage larger than 100%, such as 110%, 125%, or 150%.
Browser zoom enlarges the Outlook.com page, including the folder list, message list, controls, and message body. It is not the same as changing the font used to compose a message.
To change the font size for a new message or reply, create or reply to an email, select Change the size of your text in the compose pane, and choose a size. That setting affects composed messages, not the folder tree or the display of received mail.
Why common Outlook font-size fixes fail
- “Use View > Navigation Pane > Options > Font.” This is outdated guidance from older Outlook versions. Current Classic Outlook does not expose that Folder Pane font selector.
- “Row Font changes the folder list.” Row Font changes message rows. Column Font changes headings in the message list. Neither controls the Folder Pane.
- “Reading Pane zoom enlarges all of Outlook.” It enlarges the selected message body only. The folder tree and message list retain their own sizes.
- “Change the default compose font to enlarge received email.” Compose settings apply to new, replied-to, or forwarded messages. Incoming HTML email can contain its own formatting.
- “Change the Reading Pane position to make text larger.” Right, Bottom, and Off are layout choices, not font controls.
Choose the right fix
| What looks too small? | Use this control |
|---|---|
| Folder tree in New Outlook | View > View settings > Mail > Layout > Text size and spacing |
| Folder tree in Classic Outlook | Windows Accessibility > Text size, or Windows Display > Scale |
| Message list in Classic Outlook | View > View Settings > Other Settings > Row Font or Column Font |
| Selected message in New Outlook | View > Zoom |
| Selected message in Classic Outlook | Bottom zoom control or Ctrl + mouse wheel |
| Entire Outlook.com page | Browser menu > Zoom |

Does Row Font change the Outlook folder list?
No. Row Font changes text in message-list rows. Column Font changes message-list headings. Neither setting changes the Folder Pane.
Can Reading Pane zoom be made permanent?
In Classic Outlook, open a message in its own window, select Zoom, choose a percentage, enable Remember my preference, and select OK. Zoom used directly in the main Reading Pane can remain temporary and may reset when you select another item.
How do I enlarge Outlook.com folders and messages together?
Use the browser’s zoom control. In Microsoft Edge, select Settings and more (…), choose Zoom, and select a larger percentage. This enlarges the complete Outlook.com page.
The Bottom Line
For New Outlook for Windows, use View > View settings > Mail > Layout > Text size and spacing > Large for the interface and View > Zoom for the selected message. In Classic Outlook, the Folder Pane has no current native font-size setting, so use Windows text size or display scaling. For Mac, use Outlook > Settings > Fonts; for Outlook.com, use your browser’s zoom.
