To enlarge the buildable area in Enshrouded, upgrade the Flame Altar at your base. Select Upgrade Altar and pay the displayed Shroud Core cost; the highest reported tier uses Shroud Nexus. There is no separate “building-range” tool or character stat.
Each altar has its own area upgrade, while your world’s Flame level is shared. For a base larger than one altar’s footprint, place additional upgraded altars so their borders overlap. Treat the tier sizes and costs below as current community-reported values rather than permanent guarantees: the fan wiki and guides disagree about the top tier, and no official patch note confirming these area costs is published.

Construction is permitted inside the protected build volume around a Flame Altar. The altar’s upgrade level determines the size of that volume. Upgrading your character, unlocking recipes, or raising the world Flame level does not independently expand an altar’s construction boundaries.
The reported dimensions are cubic: a value such as 80×80×80 means approximately 80 units across each of the width, length and height axes. It is not an 80-unit radius measured from the altar, so moving the altar toward one edge of a planned base changes how much room remains on the other sides. Check the visible boundary in build mode rather than relying only on a number, especially on uneven terrain.

How to upgrade a Flame Altar
- Return to the altar you want to enlarge. Upgrades belong to that individual altar. Visiting another altar, even in the same world, does not automatically give it the same build volume.
- Interact with the Flame Altar. Open its management interface and choose Upgrade Altar. The exact menu wording can change with patches, but the upgrade command is presented from the altar interface rather than from the crafting menu.
- Review the next tier’s requirement. Confirm the item and quantity shown on screen before committing. Community references report Shroud Cores for the first two expansions and Shroud Nexus for the reported top expansion.
- Provide the required material and confirm. If the button is unavailable, leave the menu, gather the missing item, and reopen the altar interface. The game should show the resulting level and expanded boundary after a successful upgrade.
- Test the new edge. Enter build mode and attempt to place a temporary block or foundation near each side and at the intended upper and lower heights. Remove test pieces after confirming the boundary.
Reported altar levels, dimensions and costs
The following progression is reported by enshrouded.wiki.gg, a fan-maintained wiki describing itself as the Official Enshrouded Wiki. A Steam discussion repeats the same cost sequence. Because no developer patch note confirms these values and game values can change, use the altar’s current in-game prompt as the final authority.

The sequence increases the reported span by about 40 units on every axis at each step. A guide from Deltia’s Gaming lists only the 40, 80 and 120 volumes, which is why older walkthroughs may tell you that three upgrades or only three area sizes exist. The newer tier listing and a Steam post both include a 160×160×160 level, but you should inspect your own altar before spending rare materials.
Where to get the materials
Shroud Cores
Guides and player reports consistently describe bosses as dropping Shroud Cores. No reliable universal number of cores per boss is published, so plan around the drop you actually receive rather than assuming a fixed yield. If you are short of cores, identify the next accessible boss encounter and keep the cores in storage until you are ready to upgrade the specific altar that needs them.

Shroud Nexus
The reported fourth-level cost is five Shroud Nexus. No complete acquisition route is published, and whether every current edition uses this item remains unconfirmed, so do not substitute Shroud Cores unless your altar interface explicitly permits it. If your game shows a different material, follow that live requirement and treat the table as historical guidance.
Expanding a base beyond one altar
One fully upgraded altar still leaves a finite cube. Community Steam posts say that area upgrades apply separately to each altar, while the Flame level is shared across the world. You can therefore build a larger settlement by creating a chain of altars.
Overlap is essential
Place the next altar close enough that its build boundary intersects the previous altar’s boundary. Players report that a chain with a gap does not link into one continuous construction area. Overlap also gives you a practical place to stand while placing foundations, roads or walls across the transition.

Plan the chain before spending materials
- Mark the intended centerline of the settlement and decide where each altar will sit.
- Leave visible overlap between neighboring boundaries instead of placing them edge-to-edge; terrain, camera angle and boundary visualization can make a nominal edge difficult to judge.
- Upgrade the altar that will support the most important structures first. Every altar has its own upgrade state according to community reports.
- Test a build piece across the proposed join before decorating the area. If placement fails, move the second altar closer or upgrade it.
A player post describes a multi-altar base roughly 320 units wide, 320 units long and 160 units high. That is an individual report, not a documented game limit or guaranteed maximum. The practical maximum depends on how many altars you place, how much their borders overlap, terrain, and any limits introduced by later patches.
Moving an altar to extend or reposition a base
One guide suggests picking up an altar and placing it farther away to extend a settlement, and players say an altar can be moved at any time. This is useful when your original placement leaves too little room on one side or when a planned chain needs better alignment.
- Remove or secure nearby construction that could obstruct the new location.
- Use the altar’s pickup or move interaction and select a new position where the boundary covers the next section of the base.
- Check the visible build volume in the new position before rebuilding around it.
- Place a second altar instead if you need the old area and the new area simultaneously.
Whether an altar keeps every core-funded area upgrade after being extinguished or moved is unresolved. One player post claims an upgrade can be lost, but that report is unverified. If the altar contains a valuable expansion, test the move with a spare or low-level altar first and confirm the displayed level afterward. Do not assume that relocation preserves the upgrade until your game shows it.

Choosing an efficient layout
Compact workshop or starter shelter
Keep a single altar near the center of the rooms that need building access. Upgrade it when the current boundary blocks a planned addition. A central position wastes less of the cube on empty terrain than placing the altar at an outside wall.

Use a line of overlapping altars along the settlement’s long axis. Upgrade the altars near the workshop, storage and main traffic routes first, then expand the chain toward farms or decorative districts. Check both horizontal axes: a chain that solves length may still leave the settlement too narrow.
Large town or vertical build
Use a grid or staggered arrangement of overlapping altars rather than a single line. Because the reported volume includes height, test the lowest foundation and highest planned roof or tower floor. A horizontal overlap does not guarantee that a structure is within the shared vertical range.

Remote outpost
Place a separate altar at the outpost and upgrade it independently. The shared world Flame level may help with global progression, but it does not remove the need to expand the outpost’s own build volume according to community reports.
Troubleshooting a blocked building area
The upgrade button is unavailable
- Check that you are interacting with the altar itself, not a nearby crafting station.
- Read the requirement shown for the next level; the needed item may be a Shroud Core or Shroud Nexus.
- Verify that the material is in the inventory or storage location accepted by your current interface.
- Leave and reopen the altar menu if the display appears stale, then confirm the level shown after any successful purchase.
A piece will not place near an altar
- Move toward the altar and retry to distinguish a boundary problem from terrain, collision or support rules.
- Test at the same height as the altar, then at the planned upper and lower elevations; the build area is three-dimensional.
- For a multi-altar project, check that the borders visibly overlap. A gap between altars is reported to prevent the areas from linking.
- Confirm that you upgraded the altar covering that location. Upgrading a different altar does not necessarily enlarge this one.
The map has gaps after adding altars
Do not assume that nearby altars automatically combine. Pick a point in the suspected gap, inspect which altar’s boundary reaches it, and move or add an altar so the neighboring volumes intersect. Keep a small overlap margin rather than relying on a single boundary line.
The area changed after moving or extinguishing an altar
The available evidence is contradictory. Reopen the altar interface and check its displayed level and required materials. If the level reverted, treat the change as a game-state issue and avoid moving additional upgraded altars until you have confirmed the behavior in your version.
Patch and version cautions
The figures above were collected on October 14, 2026, but no published material confirms that a 2026 patch changed build-area values. One guide discusses Update 7 and a Flame Level 9 focus, not a verified change to altar dimensions or costs. Since Enshrouded can change through updates, the live altar screen supersedes any older guide.
When a patch changes the interface or materials, record the level, volume and cost shown by your own altar before planning a large base. Community pages may retain older numbers, and a guide that stops at 120×120×120 may simply predate the reported fourth tier rather than describe your current version.

A practical expansion checklist
- Choose the altar that actually covers the construction area you want to enlarge.
- Open its interface and select Upgrade Altar.
- Verify the live material requirement and collect the required Shroud Core or Shroud Nexus.
- Confirm the upgrade, then test the new boundary on all three axes.
- For a larger settlement, place the next altar with a clear overlap and test a piece across the join.
- Before moving an upgraded altar, verify its retained level in a low-risk test because preservation after moving or extinguishing is not confirmed.
- Recheck values after major patches instead of treating community tables as permanent game rules.

Upgrade each Flame Altar through its own Upgrade Altar menu, using the material and cost shown in your current game. Community data reports 40, 80, 120 and possibly 160 units per axis, with Shroud Cores for the early expansions and Shroud Nexus for the top tier.
