On many Samsung laptops, hold Fn and press F3 to increase screen brightness; use Fn + F2 to lower it. If the shortcut does nothing, adjust brightness in Windows or check whether your model needs Samsung Settings for its function keys.
Increase brightness with the keyboard
- Hold down Fn and press F3 until the screen is bright enough. On many Samsung notebooks, Fn + F2 lowers brightness. Samsung notes that shortcut behavior and available features vary by model and software version. Samsung’s laptop brightness guide was last updated June 18, 2026.
- If the shortcut does not respond, check whether your laptop requires the appropriate Samsung Settings app for Fn hotkeys. Some models also support Fn Lock, which lets function-key shortcuts work without holding Fn. See Samsung’s function-key instructions for the controls available on your PC.
Use the Windows brightness slider
The slider is a useful alternative when the keyboard shortcut is unavailable or inconvenient. Its location depends on your Windows version:
- Windows 11: Select the network, volume, or battery icon on the taskbar to open Quick Settings, then move the brightness slider.
- Windows 10: Open Action Center from the taskbar and use its brightness slider.
Samsung notes that the built-in brightness adjustment may not be available while an external monitor is connected. If you do not see the slider, disconnect the external display and check again. For more detail, see Samsung’s Action Center guidance.

Adjust display appearance in Samsung Settings
To review display modes, open Start, search for Samsung Settings, and select Display. Samsung’s US guide describes modes including Auto, Vivid, Natural, Photo Editing, and Movie, though the choices depend on the laptop and installed software. These modes change the screen’s appearance; they are not a substitute for raising the brightness level. See Samsung’s display and brightness guide.

Troubleshoot a Samsung laptop screen that stays dim
Check power and automatic brightness
Brightness may change with power state: Samsung says it can rise when the PC is charging, and compatible PCs may adjust brightness automatically to conserve battery. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display and look for automatic brightness controls if they are available on your device. Their presence and labels can vary. Samsung’s brightness guidance explains the power-related behavior.
Update Windows and calibrate the display
If the brightness control works but the screen still looks wrong, install available Windows updates and consider calibrating display color. These steps can help with display problems, but calibration changes color presentation rather than increasing the screen’s brightness setting.

If the screen remains unexpectedly dark after checking brightness controls and power-related settings, follow Samsung’s dim-screen troubleshooting or contact Samsung service for help with your model.
