To speed up a Logic Pro project, show the tempo in the control-bar LCD and raise its BPM: drag the tempo value upward, or double-click it and type a number. Use the Tempo track or Tempo List for changes over time, and check audio-region Flex & Follow settings if recordings or loops should follow the new tempo.

Raise the project tempo

  1. Show the tempo control. In the control-bar LCD display menu, choose Beats & Project if the tempo value is not visible.
  2. Change the BPM. Click and hold the tempo value, then drag upward to increase it. For a specific number, double-click the value and enter the target BPM.
  3. Audition the result. Play the project and listen to audio, software instruments, Drummer regions, and Apple Loops. Their response depends on the material and its settings.

Tempo is measured in beats per minute. Apple documents a project tempo range of 5 to 990 bpm; new projects default to 120 bpm. These are documented Logic Pro values, not recommended creative targets. Apple’s project-properties guide explains project tempo, and its tempo-control guide covers the LCD and other tempo controls.

Choose the right method for the change

Goal Use What it changes
Set one faster tempo for the project Tempo value in the LCD The project’s constant tempo
Tap in a pulse by ear Tap Tempo key command The tempo based on your taps
Accelerate, slow down, or use different tempos in sections Tempo track or Tempo List Tempo events over time
Make the project follow a performance Smart Tempo in Adapt or Automatic mode The project tempo or map, according to mode and conditions
Match a project or section to a loop’s musical length Edit > Tempo > Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators Global tempo or a local tempo change

Tap Tempo

Assign the Tap Tempo command in Logic Pro’s key-command configuration, then tap the desired pulse. Apple’s guide notes that an alert appears the first time to ask whether to enable Tap Tempo. It does not establish a universal default key binding, so use the command configuration rather than assuming a shortcut. Apple’s tempo guide documents Tap Tempo.

Tempo changes across a song

Use the Tempo track or Tempo List to create and edit tempo events when the song should change speed by section or accelerate gradually. This is different from entering one new BPM in the LCD: it creates a tempo map rather than replacing the project’s single constant tempo. Apple’s tempo guide and Smart Tempo overview describe project-tempo controls.

Decide whether audio should follow the new tempo

Changing project tempo can affect playback speed of audio and software-instrument recordings, Drummer regions, and Apple Loops. For audio regions, the Flex & Follow setting controls whether and how the region follows project-tempo changes. If a recording shifts in timing or sound unexpectedly after raising BPM, inspect that region’s setting rather than assuming every audio file will behave alike. Apple’s project-properties guide describes the effects of changing tempo; its Smart Tempo guide covers following behavior.

Use Smart Tempo when a performance should set the pace

Smart Tempo offers three modes. Choose according to whether the project should stay fixed or adapt to recorded or imported material.

Mode Behavior Best suited to
Keep Project Tempo Retains the project tempo; audio follows it when its Flex & Follow setting is enabled Preserving an established tempo while aligning audio to it
Adapt Project Tempo Adapts the project tempo to a recording or imported region Building a tempo map from a free performance
Automatic Chooses Keep or Adapt behavior depending on whether a tempo reference is present and other project conditions Letting Logic Pro choose how to handle the material

Adapt can change the project tempo map, so use Keep when preserving the existing tempo is the priority. After recording in Adapt mode, Apple advises switching to Auto or Keep if subsequent recordings should not change the original map. If beat detection needs correction, review and refine it in Smart Tempo Editor. Apple’s Smart Tempo guide, Smart Tempo overview, and Smart Tempo Editor guide explain these options.

Match a loop to the project tempo

If an audio loop has a known musical length, Logic Pro can calculate a tempo from the region and the bar-length locators. This is useful when the loop should define the project’s pace, rather than merely stretching the loop to a tempo you chose.

  3. Choose Edit > Tempo > Adjust Tempo using Region Length and Locators.
  4. In the dialog, choose Globally to adjust the whole project, or Create to add a local tempo change for the section occupied by the region.

The region’s length remains constant while Logic Pro recalculates project tempo. See Apple’s instructions for matching project tempo to an audio region.

Check the tempo map after recording

When a performance recorded without a metronome is intended to define the song’s timing, Adapt or Automatic can create a tempo map from it. Afterward, inspect the detected beats and refine them in Smart Tempo Editor if needed. If the project should not keep adapting to later recordings, return to Auto or Keep after recording in Adapt mode. Apple’s guide to matching tempo automatically in Logic Pro explains the automatic workflow.

Why the tempo change may not sound as expected

  • The tempo number is hidden: change the LCD display to Beats & Project.
  • An audio region does not move with the project tempo: check its Flex & Follow setting.
  • The project tempo changes during recording or import: review Smart Tempo mode; Adapt is designed to change project tempo to match material.
  • A loop does not align to the intended bars: reset the locators to the region’s musical length before using the region-length command.
  • The available controls differ: Apple’s cited Logic Pro guide pages include version 10.7 for macOS 11.0, and interface labels can vary by release. Check the guide for your installed version.
