Move your existing router toward the center of your home, raise it into an open space, and reduce obstacles between it and the rooms with weak Wi-Fi. Then test the available Wi-Fi bands and channels, changing one thing at a time and checking whether it helps. If internet speeds are still poor beside the router, the problem may be your service or device—not the signal in the room.
First, find out where the problem is
A slow speed test does not measure Wi-Fi signal alone. Results can also depend on your internet service, the device doing the test, the distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, interference, and how busy the network is. Comparing the problem room with a spot near the router helps separate a weak in-home wireless connection from a broader slowdown. Microsoft recommends recording results in multiple locations before and after adjustments; Google also identifies provider speed, device capability, distance, building materials, and interference as factors that can affect performance.
Use the same device and the same test method each time if you can. Record the result, the location, and whether you were connected to 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz, if that is visible. Repeat the test after each change rather than moving the router, switching bands, and changing channels all at once. That way, you can tell which adjustment made a difference.
Recommended Free Tools
- Test in the room with the problem. Note the result and any obvious symptoms, such as a connection that drops or pages that take a long time to load.
- Test near the router. Keep the same device and test method. Stay close enough that distance and walls are no longer major parts of the path.
- Repeat with another device if available. If one device struggles while another works well in the same place, the issue may be specific to that device or its Wi-Fi capabilities. If multiple devices have trouble, look at the router, its location, interference, or the internet service.
Run each comparison under broadly similar conditions. A busy household can make one test look worse simply because someone is streaming or downloading. You do not need laboratory precision; a short record of location, device, band, time, and result is enough to reveal a pattern.

A much better result near the router points toward the wireless path or layout as a likely factor, although it does not prove a single cause. Poor results near the router and across devices make it more useful to investigate the provider connection, the modem/router connection, and device limitations than to keep relocating the router. These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees.
Move the router to a better position
Router placement is usually the most useful change to try first because it costs nothing and is easy to reverse. A router tucked into a corner, under a desk, behind furniture, or on the floor has more obstacles between it and many devices. Microsoft recommends a central location, off the floor, with space around the router and away from walls and metal objects. Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout also explains why walls and other obstructions matter.
- Choose a more central spot. If the router is at one edge of the home, try a position nearer the middle, or nearer the area where coverage matters most. The best position depends on the layout, so treat this as a test rather than a universal rule.
- Raise it off the floor. Put it on a stable shelf or similar surface, rather than directly on the floor or behind low furniture.
- Give it open space. Move it out from inside a cabinet or behind large objects when practical. Avoid placing it against a wall or beside metal furniture if you have another convenient option.
- Reduce obstacles along the path. Look at what lies between the router and the problem room, especially walls and large objects. You may not be able to change the home’s structure, but a different router position can sometimes reduce the number of obstacles.
- Retest using the same locations. Compare the new results with your baseline. If coverage improves in one room but worsens in another, decide which area needs the stronger connection and try a nearby position that balances the two.
Think in terms of the whole path, not just the router. A position that is technically central may put the signal through several dense walls, while a slightly off-center shelf may give a clearer path to the room where you work. Compare distance to the problem area, the number and type of intervening walls or objects, and nearby electronics at each candidate position.

Choose the band that fits the room and device
Many routers use more than one Wi-Fi frequency band. The practical choice is often between wider reach and potential throughput: lower-frequency 2.4 GHz generally travels farther and passes obstacles better, while 5 GHz can offer faster throughput at shorter range and is more affected by walls. 6 GHz is available only when both the router and device support it, and it also has shorter range. Google explains band behavior and compatibility for its systems in its guide to 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands.
| Band | Useful when | Trade-off | Compatibility to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | The device is farther from the router or separated by several obstacles. | It generally reaches farther and passes obstacles better than 5 GHz, but nearby Wi-Fi networks and some electronics can contribute to congestion or interference. | Some devices support only 2.4 GHz. |
| 5 GHz | The device is nearer the router and higher throughput matters. | It can provide faster throughput, but range is shorter and walls affect it more than 2.4 GHz. | The router and device both need to support the band. |
| 6 GHz | A compatible device is relatively near a compatible router. | It has shorter range than 2.4 GHz. | Both the router and device need 6 GHz support. |
Try 2.4 GHz in a far room or where several obstacles separate the device from the router. Try 5 GHz nearer the router when throughput matters. A device may not let you choose the band directly, and the router may present one network name rather than separate names. Some systems automatically steer compatible devices between bands; Google says Nest Wifi systems use band steering. Other routers may show separate networks. Do not split network names or change router settings just because a device has trouble: first check what options your router and device actually provide, and remember that a smart-home device may support only 2.4 GHz.
If two network names are visible, connect the test device to one band at a time and keep the location unchanged. If there is only one name, the router may be choosing the band automatically. In that case, you can compare locations or temporarily use a router option that exposes bands only if your model documents that setting; it is not necessary for every household. A phone, laptop, television, and smart-home sensor may make different band choices even when they are in the same room.

Reduce nearby interference
Wi-Fi uses radio signals, and nearby wireless networks or electronics can affect a connection. Possible sources include microwaves, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, wireless cameras, power cables, and dense clusters of electronics. The effect depends on the devices and their placement; a nearby appliance is not automatically the cause of every slowdown. Apple’s guide to wireless interference affecting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Google’s Wi-Fi performance guidance describe interference as one factor to investigate.
- Move the router away from electronics that are packed close to it when a practical alternative exists.
- If the problem happens only when a particular appliance or device is in use, temporarily switch off nearby electronics one at a time and retest. A change that repeats when the device is off and on is a stronger clue than a one-time difference.
- Keep the router and the device you are testing away from dense electronics or power cables where possible.
- Consider nearby Wi-Fi networks as well as household electronics. In a crowded area, other networks may be competing for wireless channels.
Test one suspected source at a time so you can identify whether it matters. You do not need to permanently disable a useful device based on a single speed test. Also distinguish radio interference from ordinary network load: if every device slows whenever several people stream or download, the shared connection may simply be busy.
Check the Wi-Fi channel and channel width
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can crowd the same channel. If your router has automatic channel selection, leave it as a reasonable starting point. If performance remains poor and the router allows manual selection, inspect nearby networks and compare channel conditions rather than choosing a channel at random. The settings menu and available options vary by router.
For 2.4 GHz, Microsoft recommends comparing channels 1, 6, and 11 based on observed congestion and signal conditions. On 5 GHz, consider the number of nearby access points when choosing a channel. A channel number is not a guaranteed fix: the least crowded option in one home or at one time may not be best elsewhere. Microsoft’s home Wi-Fi guidance covers channel selection and layout considerations.
- Check whether your router has automatic channel selection and note the current setting before changing it.
- If you can see nearby Wi-Fi networks or channel conditions, compare them with the choices available in your router’s settings.
- Change only the channel, if you have a clear reason to test a different one, then repeat the same tests in the problem room and near the router.
- If performance becomes worse or unreliable, restore the previous setting or return to automatic selection.
Channel width is a separate setting from channel number. Microsoft notes that on 2.4 GHz, trying 20 MHz may help some older adapters when a connection is unreliable despite a strong signal and a clear channel. Treat this as a later troubleshooting test, not a routine first change: record the original setting, change one option, and compare results before deciding whether to keep it.
Do not assume that a manual channel remains optimal forever. Neighboring networks can change, and a setting that helps one room may make another less reliable. If automatic selection performs as well as or better than a manual choice, there is no benefit in keeping the more complicated setting.
Use a room-by-room troubleshooting plan
When only one area has trouble, walk through the home with the same test device. Start near the router, then test the hallway, the problem room, and any location where a wall or large object changes the path. Mark where performance drops rather than describing the entire home as “bad.” This can show whether one particular wall, floor, cabinet, or nearby appliance is associated with the change.

For a device that moves around, test it in the same orientation and at roughly the same height where practical. A laptop on a desk and a phone inside a bag are not identical test conditions. The goal is not to create a perfect measurement, but to avoid mistaking a change in the test setup for an improvement in Wi-Fi.
If the router has removable antennas or adjustable controls, leave those settings alone unless the manufacturer’s instructions explain them. The no-cost improvements supported here come from placement, obstacles, bands, interference, and channel settings; unnecessary hardware changes can introduce a new variable.
Interpret the results and choose the next step
Once you have tested placement, bands, and any relevant interference or channel changes, use the pattern of results to decide what to investigate next. A useful comparison is not simply “fast” versus “slow”: ask whether the problem follows a location, a device, or the whole connection.
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Results are much better near the router than in the problem room. | The wireless path, distance, obstacles, or local interference may be contributing. | Keep testing router positions, the available band, and nearby sources of interference. |
| One device struggles, while another works better in the same location. | The devices may differ in Wi-Fi capability or in how they connect to the router. | Check which bands the affected device supports and whether it is using the same network as the other device. |
| Several devices perform poorly even near the router. | The problem may extend beyond room coverage; provider speed, the modem/router connection, or device limits are possibilities. | Check service performance and connectivity rather than making repeated placement changes. |
| Performance changes when a nearby electronic device is switched off. | That device’s placement or operation may be contributing interference. | Repeat the on/off comparison and, if it is consistent, try separating the devices. |
| Wi-Fi is unreliable despite a strong signal and a clear channel on 2.4 GHz. | Channel width may be relevant, particularly with some older adapters. | If the router exposes the option, test 20 MHz and compare with the original setting. |
Google’s guide to improving Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wi-Fi speed and performance likewise identifies several possible influences on speed, including distance, building materials, provider speed, client capability, and interference. The point of the tests is to narrow down the likely category, not to assume a result identifies the cause with certainty.
Common situations and the free fix to try
“The bedroom is slow, but the living room is fine.”
Test 2.4 GHz in the bedroom, then try moving the router higher and closer to the center of the home. Look for the walls, furniture, metal objects, and electronics between the two rooms. Retest after each move. If the living room becomes worse when the bedroom improves, choose a position that balances the areas you actually use.
“My laptop is fine, but a smart-home device will not connect.”
The smart-home device may support only 2.4 GHz, while the laptop can use several bands. Check the device and router options rather than assuming a fault. If the router uses one network name and automatic band steering, follow the router maker’s setup guidance; do not create separate names unless the router supports and requires that approach.
“5 GHz is fast next to the router but disappears down the hall.”
That behavior is consistent with the shorter range and greater wall sensitivity of 5 GHz. Compare 2.4 GHz in the hall or farther room, and keep 5 GHz for nearby devices where its potential throughput is useful.

“The signal looks strong, but the connection is unreliable.”
Signal strength alone does not explain every failure. Check nearby networks and electronics, test another channel if the router permits it, and consider 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz if the adapter is older and the connection remains unreliable despite a clear channel.
Make changes safely and keep what works
Router menus differ, so there is no reliable universal path for channel, band, or channel-width settings. Look for the wireless or Wi-Fi settings in the router’s own controls, and check its instructions if an option is unclear. Before changing a setting, note its original value. Change one setting at a time, repeat the same tests, and restore the original value if connections become less reliable or a device can no longer connect.
- Keep a short record of test location, device, band if known, and result.
- Prefer reversible changes: move the router, create more open space around it, or test a band already offered by the router.
- Do not assume that every connected device can choose a band or use 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
- Do not treat one speed test as proof. Repeat a comparison under similar conditions before settling on a change.
- If results remain poor near the router across devices, shift the investigation to the service connection or device capabilities.
Frequently asked questions
How can I get better Wi-Fi in another room without buying anything?
Measure the room and a spot near the router, then move the router toward the center, raise it off the floor, and clear space around it. Test 2.4 GHz in the farther room and compare the result with 5 GHz near the router. Check nearby electronics and crowded channels before making more changes.
Why is my Wi-Fi signal weak in one part of my house?
Distance, walls, building materials, furniture, metal objects, nearby networks, and electronics can all affect the wireless path. Compare the problem area with several locations and inspect what lies between the router and that room. A different router position may reduce the obstacles, but no single placement works in every home.
Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?
Use 2.4 GHz when range and obstacle penetration matter most, especially in a farther room. Use 5 GHz when the device is nearer the router and higher throughput matters. Both the router and client must support the chosen band, and some devices support only 2.4 GHz.
What about 6 GHz?
6 GHz requires compatible newer router and client hardware. It generally has shorter range than 2.4 GHz, so it is most useful relatively near the router when a compatible device can use it.

Should I manually choose a Wi-Fi channel?
Automatic channel selection is a reasonable starting point. If performance remains poor and your router allows manual choices, compare nearby network congestion. On 2.4 GHz, test channels 1, 6, and 11 based on what you observe; on 5 GHz, consider nearby access points. Restore automatic selection if the change does not help.
Why is my internet slow even near the router?
If several devices perform poorly near the router, the issue may be the provider connection, modem/router connection, network traffic, or device capability rather than room coverage. Compare devices and check service performance before repeatedly moving the router.
Can changing channel width help?
On 2.4 GHz, Microsoft notes that testing 20 MHz can help some older adapters when the connection is unreliable despite a strong signal and clear channel. Treat it as a later, reversible troubleshooting step and compare it with the original setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest free way to improve home Wi-Fi?
Measure first, then move the existing router toward the center of the home, raise it off the floor, and leave open space around it. Retest before changing bands or channels.
Is a weak signal the same as slow internet?
No. Speed can also be limited by the provider, modem/router connection, device capability, interference, distance, building materials, or network traffic. Compare a problem room with a location near the router.
Why does 2.4 GHz work farther than 5 GHz?
2.4 GHz generally travels farther and passes obstacles better. 5 GHz can offer higher throughput at shorter range and is more affected by walls.
Do all devices let me select Wi-Fi bands?
No. Some devices support only 2.4 GHz, and some routers use one network name with automatic band steering. The available choices depend on both the router and device.

How do I know whether interference is the problem?
Temporarily switch off nearby electronics one at a time and repeat the same test. A consistent change when a microwave, cordless phone, Bluetooth device, camera, or other source is off is stronger evidence than a one-time difference.
The Bottom Line
Measure the problem room and a spot near the router, then make the free changes in order: move the router centrally and higher, clear obstacles and nearby electronics, test 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz (or compatible 6 GHz), and review channels only when needed. Change one thing at a time and keep the setting that repeatedly improves the rooms and devices you actually use. If results remain poor beside the router, investigate the service or device rather than treating it as a coverage problem.
