The fastest way to improve a TV picture is to choose an appropriate picture mode, then adjust sharpness and motion processing for the content you actually watch. Start with Filmmaker Mode or Movie/Cinema, keep sharpness near the television’s neutral baseline, and use only as much motion smoothing as looks natural to you. Make changes while viewing the relevant SDR, HDR, or game signal, because televisions can save separate settings for each format.

There is no universal “best” number for sharpness or motion. Menus, scales, panel behavior, and processing differ by model. Use the instructions below as a controlled way to find a clean, comfortable image without clipping detail, creating edge halos, or adding distracting motion artifacts.

Use this order for a better picture

Changing several sliders at once makes it difficult to know what helped or caused a problem. Use a familiar, high-quality source and work through the controls in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a picture preset. Begin with Filmmaker Mode, Movie, Cinema, or the closest accuracy-oriented option.
  2. Select the signal format you are watching. Adjust SDR while an SDR program is playing and HDR while an HDR program is active. Enter Game mode for gaming if you need lower latency.
  3. Set the room-appropriate light level. Adjust the display’s backlight, OLED light, or equivalent panel-light control for the room, not the black-level control.
  4. Check sharpness. Return it to the model’s neutral-looking baseline and reduce it if you see bright outlines or ringing around objects.
  5. Test motion processing. Use a familiar moving scene, begin with Off or Low, and add only enough interpolation to suit your preference.
  6. Compare and keep notes. Change one setting at a time, compare with the original value, and undo any change that removes detail or introduces artifacts.

RTINGS identifies the picture preset as the setting that usually has the largest overall effect because it can change color temperature, white balance, and motion processing together. Its general calibration guide is a useful reference for the sequence, but a preset is a starting point rather than a guarantee that every television will be accurate. RTINGS’ TV calibration guide was updated April 22, 2026.

Pick the right picture mode first

Filmmaker Mode

Filmmaker Mode is designed to preserve the creator’s intended presentation by disabling or reducing extra picture and motion processing. The UHD Alliance introduced the mode in 2019. On a compatible TV it is usually the best first choice for films and scripted television when you want original frame cadence and a less processed image.

Filmmaker Mode can still look too dim, too warm, or otherwise unsuitable in a bright room, and some televisions restrict controls in that preset. If you dislike the result, switch to Movie, Cinema, or the maker’s equivalent rather than forcing every control to match a recipe from another model.

Movie or Cinema

Movie/Cinema presets are generally designed to be closer to reference color and gamma than Standard or Vivid. They can provide a practical alternative when Filmmaker Mode is unavailable, changes brightness unexpectedly, or removes a control you need. Check the same scene in both modes and keep the one that preserves skin tones, shadow detail, and highlights in your room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard, Vivid, and Dynamic

Brighter presets are useful for a sunlit room or a retail-style display, but their extra contrast, color intensity, sharpening, or motion processing can hide detail and make video look artificial. They are not inherently defective; they simply prioritize impact over a reference presentation. If faces look oversaturated, whites lose texture, or objects have obvious outlines, move to an accuracy-oriented preset before trying to correct each symptom with individual sliders.

Game mode

Game mode is a separate trade-off. It typically reduces processing to lower input latency, which can make controls feel more responsive, while changing the image and disabling some adjustments. Use it when responsiveness matters, then verify that the picture remains acceptable with the exact console, PC, resolution, and HDR signal you use. Model-specific guidance matters because available controls and processing behavior are not universal.

Set sharpness without creating halos

Sharpness controls usually add edge enhancement rather than recovering detail that is absent from the source. Excessive enhancement can produce a bright or dark fringe around text, faces, buildings, and high-contrast objects; fine textures may look noisy or brittle. Lowering sharpness too far can soften the image, but maximizing it is not a reliable way to make a 4K picture clearer.

Do not copy a single sharpness number from a different television. Numeric scales and neutral values vary by brand and model, and even two televisions with the same resolution can use different processing. RTINGS’ model guides illustrate this: their recommended values differ between the Samsung Q80D and Sony BRAVIA 7 pages, so the number is a model-specific reference rather than a universal target. See the Q80D calibration page and the BRAVIA 7 calibration page for examples.

A practical sharpness check

  1. Pause a clean 4K scene containing fine lines, small text, hair, or distant architecture.
  2. Move sharpness through a wide range while watching the edges of objects, not just the overall impression of clarity.
  3. Stop at the lowest setting that preserves natural fine detail without a visible outline or ringing.
  4. Check a lower-quality source afterward. If HD or broadcast video looks too soft, a small increase may be preferable, but do not use sharpening to disguise compression noise.

Use the television’s own reset or default value as your reference point. If the menu has separate controls for different inputs or formats, repeat the check for each one rather than assuming a change carries over.

Decide how much motion smoothing to use

Motion smoothing, also called motion interpolation, creates intermediate frames between the frames supplied by a film, show, or game. This can reduce visible judder and make movement look smoother, but it can also introduce warped edges, trails, double images, or the “soap-opera” appearance that makes film look like live video.

For films and scripted television

Start with motion processing Off or the lowest setting. Films and many dramas use a deliberate frame cadence; interpolation changes that cadence even when the picture looks technically smoother. Watch a familiar pan, conversation, or action shot. If movement feels distracting, try Low rather than jumping to the strongest setting. Reduce it again if faces deform, objects bend as they move, or the scene loses its cinematic quality.

For live sports and other video

Some viewers prefer more smoothing for sports, news, and live camera footage because camera pans and scrolling text can appear clearer. Increase the control gradually and watch for trails around players, a ball, rink boards, or ticker text. A high setting is not automatically better: artifacts become more noticeable when the source contains fast cuts, complex backgrounds, or compression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand separate motion controls

Many televisions divide motion processing into controls for lower-frame-rate film content and higher-frame-rate video. Names such as Judder Reduction, Blur Reduction, Cinemotion, Motion Clarity, or their equivalents do not behave identically across brands. Some controls insert frames, while others alter the panel’s scanning or black-frame behavior and may reduce brightness. Change one control at a time and test the type of content it is intended to affect.

Use the same scene for every comparison

Streaming apps, broadcast channels, and discs can use different frame rates and compression. Compare motion settings on the same source and scene, with the same playback resolution. Evaluate natural movement, edge stability, and whether the result suits your preference; do not judge only by a menu demo or a different clip.

Keep SDR and HDR settings separate

Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) use different brightness, contrast, and tone-mapping behavior. A television may store separate values or automatically switch to another picture mode when HDR begins. Adjusting SDR while an HDR signal is absent may therefore tell you nothing about the HDR picture you will actually see.

How to verify the active format

  • Start known SDR content and open the TV’s picture menu. Record the active mode and any label indicating SDR.
  • Play a verified HDR title or game and wait for the TV’s HDR indicator or mode change.
  • Set the HDR picture mode and processing while the HDR signal is active. Check highlights, shadow detail, and color in that format.
  • Return to SDR and confirm that its settings were not unintentionally changed.

Do not copy every slider from SDR to HDR. Tone mapping and peak brightness can make an identical number produce a different visual result. Likewise, a setting that looks comfortable in a dark room may be too bright at night or too dim in daylight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust the picture step by step

1. Prepare a reliable source

Use a disc, high-bitrate stream, or other familiar source with clear faces, shadowed areas, bright highlights, and camera movement. Avoid judging the television from a heavily compressed clip, a low-resolution channel, or a paused menu screen. Disable temporary store-demo effects if the TV has them.

2. Reset only the relevant picture mode

Picture settings are often stored per input, mode, and signal format. Reset the mode you intend to tune rather than wiping every input. Write down current values if you may want to restore them.

3. Choose the preset

Select Filmmaker Mode, Movie, Cinema, or Game according to the content and the latency requirement. Let the television settle for a moment after changing modes; some sets alter brightness or processing immediately.

4. Set panel light for the room

Use the control that changes the light output of the panel—often Backlight, OLED Light, or a similar label—to match the room. This is separate from Brightness or Black Level, which determine how near-black signal information is displayed. Raising a black-level control to compensate for a dim room can make blacks gray and wash out contrast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check contrast and highlight detail

Use clouds, white clothing, snow, or specular reflections as references. If bright areas merge into a blank patch, reduce the control that is clipping highlights or check whether HDR tone mapping is active. Do not sacrifice all peak brightness just to retain a tiny amount of detail; the goal is a balanced image in the format you are watching.

6. Set sharpness

Use the edge-halo test described above. Stop at the neutral-looking baseline for your model, then verify that fine texture remains natural on both high-quality and ordinary sources.

8. Save and recheck

Confirm that the television saved the values for the correct input and format. Switch between a few scenes, then revisit the first scene to make sure the improvement was not caused by a temporary mode or a different source.

Room lighting changes what looks correct

Human vision adapts to ambient light, so a picture that looks balanced in a dark room can appear dull in daylight. Adjust panel light output for the room and viewing time, but avoid treating brightness, backlight, and black level as interchangeable. A useful comparison keeps the content, viewing angle, and room lighting constant; otherwise you may blame a setting for a change caused by the environment.

  • Bright room: Increase panel light output only as needed to overcome ambient light. Check that highlights still retain texture.
  • Dark room: Reduce panel light output if bright scenes cause eye strain. Keep black-level behavior correct so shadows do not become gray.
  • Changing rooms: Use separate day and night profiles if your television supports them, or adjust only the panel-light control rather than rebuilding the entire calibration.

Use test patterns when you need more precision

Real programs are best for judging preference, but test patterns reveal clipping, black crush, tint, and oversharpening more consistently. The general calibration guidance from RTINGS points to the downloadable AVS HD 709 calibration package for this purpose. It does not require a particular retail disc or accessory.

Patterns can help you identify whether a control is hiding detail, but they do not turn a television into a measured reference display. True calibration uses measurement equipment and a controlled environment. If you need color accuracy for professional work, have the exact model measured rather than applying a generic internet recipe.

What to look for in common patterns

  • Black-level pattern: The darkest bars should remain distinct where the display can reproduce them, without lifting the entire shadow range.
  • White-level pattern: Bright bars should remain distinguishable until the display’s practical limit; merged bars indicate clipping.
  • Sharpness pattern: Fine lines should remain clean, with no bright ringing or false edges.
  • Color pattern: Large color fields should look even, without obvious tint shifts caused by an overaggressive preset.

Compare modes with a consistent checklist

When two presets or motion settings both seem plausible, compare them on the same scene and source. The following checklist keeps subjective preference separate from visible errors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to inspect Questions to ask Warning signs
Skin tones Do faces look natural under different lighting? Orange, pink, gray, or excessively smooth faces
Shadow detail Can you distinguish dark clothing, hair, and background objects? Large areas merging into black or looking washed out
Highlight detail Do clouds, white fabric, and reflections retain texture? Blank white patches or flashing clipped areas
Edges Are text and object boundaries clean? Halos, ringing, double outlines, or crunchy texture
Motion Does movement remain stable and natural? Warping, trails, tearing, or an unwanted live-video look
Gaming response Do controls feel immediate? Perceptible delay after enabling extra processing

Accuracy-oriented modes usually preserve original intent more closely, while brighter or more processed modes may be preferable for a particular room or viewer. Neither preference is universal; the important distinction is knowing which trade-off you are choosing.

Why model-specific settings matter

Online calibration pages are references for a particular television, firmware context, and measurement method. They are not universal recipes. RTINGS’ separate pages for the Samsung Q80D and Sony BRAVIA 7 demonstrate that recommended sharpness and motion values can differ, and that controls may be named or exposed differently. Use those pages only when you own the exact model and treat their values as a starting point, not proof that your panel will behave identically.

Even within one model family, screen size, regional edition, firmware, input, and signal format can change available options. If a control is missing or grayed out, check the active source and picture mode first; some televisions expose it only for certain formats or disable it in Game or Filmmaker Mode.

Troubleshoot common picture problems

The picture looks too soft

Confirm that the source is outputting the expected resolution and that the TV is not applying a low-quality streaming mode. Check sharpness for softness, but increase it gradually and stop before halos appear. A soft, heavily compressed source cannot be restored by sharpening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edges have bright outlines

Lower sharpness and disable any separate edge-enhancement or clarity control. Recheck with text and high-contrast objects. If the outline persists at the neutral baseline, another processing feature or the source itself may be responsible.

Films look like live video

Reduce or disable motion interpolation, then replay a familiar pan. If the television has separate film and video motion controls, change the film/judder-related control first. Keep a low setting only if it solves visible judder without creating artifacts.

Moving objects warp or leave trails

Lower motion smoothing one step at a time. Test a different scene to distinguish a processing artifact from a problem in the source. Some motion-clarity features alter brightness or insert black frames, so disable those independently if the image flickers or becomes dim.

HDR looks too dark or too bright

Verify that HDR is active and that you are changing the HDR mode, not the stored SDR mode. Check tone-mapping and panel-light controls in that mode. Do not assume that copying SDR contrast or brightness values will produce the same result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Games feel delayed

Enable the TV’s Game preset and compare responsiveness before adding processing. Game mode may change color and disable controls, so tune the resulting image separately from your movie preset.

Controls keep changing

Look for automatic picture modes, ambient-light sensors, app-specific settings, or per-input storage. Disable automation only if you prefer a fixed image, and confirm settings with the exact source and format that trigger the change.

A simple decision guide

Your priority Starting choice What to adjust next
Film-like presentation Filmmaker Mode Panel light for the room, then verify sharpness and motion are not adding artifacts
Balanced everyday viewing Movie or Cinema Sharpness baseline, room light, and modest motion only if needed
Bright daytime viewing Movie/Cinema or a restrained brighter mode Panel light first; check that highlights and skin tones remain natural
Sports and live video Movie/Cinema or your preferred neutral mode Test low-to-moderate motion smoothing on the same broadcast scene
Console or PC gaming Game mode Confirm input response, then tune the game image while the correct SDR/HDR signal is active

When to stop adjusting

Stop when the image remains detailed in shadows and highlights, edges look clean, movement is free of distracting artifacts, and the result is comfortable in your room. Chasing a perfect number can make the picture worse when the number came from another model, format, or viewing environment. Save the working settings, keep a note of the mode and input they belong to, and revisit them only when the source, room, or firmware changes.
