The most dependable way to use less fuel is to combine smooth driving, sensible speeds, less idling, correct tire pressure, a lighter and less-draggy car, and better trip planning. The improvement you see will depend on your vehicle, its condition, traffic, weather, route and how consistently you apply each habit; a fuel-economy rating is not a promise for every trip.

What everyday habits can change

Fuel economy is the amount of distance your car travels for a given amount of fuel. Your result on a particular journey can differ substantially from the number on a window sticker or in an owner’s manual. Those ratings are standardized comparison figures, not fixed outcomes for every driver. A cold engine, hills, wind, heavy traffic, air-conditioning use, tire pressure, cargo and driving style all change the result.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) summarizes the potential of ordinary behavior changes rather than promising a guaranteed percentage for every car. Its 2021 Consumer Guide says aggressive driving can reduce mileage by roughly 15%–30% at highway speeds and 10%–40% in stop-and-go traffic. These are estimates, and the range is attributed in DOE material to analysis by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A driver who already accelerates gently and anticipates traffic will have less unused efficiency to recover than someone who repeatedly rushes between red lights.

1. Drive smoothly and look farther ahead

Accelerate moderately

Use the accelerator to build speed steadily instead of flooring it. You do not need to crawl or obstruct traffic; the goal is to avoid demanding more power than the situation requires. Once you reach the desired, legal speed, ease off rather than continuing to accelerate.

Anticipate traffic

Look several vehicles ahead for brake lights, merging traffic, signals, queues and changing speed limits. Leaving a sensible following gap gives you time to lift off the accelerator and let the car slow gradually. That prevents the cycle of hard braking followed by a hard acceleration to regain the lost speed.

Brake only as much as necessary

Braking turns motion into heat. It is sometimes unavoidable, but many unnecessary braking events come from following too closely or failing to read the road ahead. Coasting toward a known stop can reduce the energy you later have to replace with fuel. Never coast in a way that compromises control, and follow the vehicle manual for any restrictions on neutral or engine-braking techniques.

Keep the habit safe

Smooth driving does not mean driving slowly below a safe flow of traffic, delaying a needed maneuver or ignoring a hazard. Maintain a legal speed, leave room for an emergency stop and use the controls required for the road and weather. Fuel savings are never a reason to increase collision risk.

2. Choose a reasonable cruising speed

Air resistance rises as speed rises, so fuel economy generally declines at higher speeds. The best cruising speed is different for every vehicle, but reducing an unnecessarily high speed can make a measurable difference while also giving you more time to react.

DOE reported in 2022 on an Oak Ridge National Laboratory study of 74 light-duty vehicles: fuel economy was about 27% lower at 80 mph than at 60 mph. That is a study result across the tested vehicles, not a prediction that every car will show exactly a 27% change. Use it to understand the direction and possible scale of the effect, not to select a speed that conflicts with posted limits or safe conditions.

On a suitable, open highway, cruise control can help maintain a steady speed and avoid small, repeated accelerator movements. DOE qualifies this advice with “in most cases.” Avoid using cruise control where hills, heavy congestion, slippery surfaces, poor visibility or local rules make continuous automatic speed control unsuitable. You remain responsible for the vehicle at all times.

3. Stop wasting fuel while idling

An idling engine moves the car zero miles while still consuming fuel. DOE estimates that a personal vehicle can use about one-quarter to one-half gallon per hour while idling, depending on engine size and whether the air conditioner is running.

The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center’s primary strategy for personal vehicles is to turn the engine off when parked or stopped for more than 10 seconds, except in traffic. Apply that guidance with common sense: obey local anti-idling rules, keep the vehicle safe and secure, and follow the owner’s manual. Do not shut down where doing so would interfere with steering, braking, visibility, emergency response or the operation of required equipment.

Practical idle decisions

  • Turn the engine off while waiting in a permitted parking space rather than leaving it running for comfort.
  • Do not use a drive-through queue as a reason to idle indefinitely; parking and entering may avoid both idle time and a long queue.
  • In traffic, follow the exception in the DOE guidance and the instructions for your vehicle; repeated shutdowns in moving traffic are not the objective.
  • Use remote-start and warm-up features only as directed by the manufacturer and local law. A long stationary warm-up is usually fuel use without travel.

4. Remove weight and external drag you do not need

Unload the cabin and trunk

DOE estimates that an extra 100 pounds can reduce fuel economy by around 1%, with a larger relative effect on smaller vehicles. The exact effect depends on the car and the route, but the principle is simple: do not carry tools, sports equipment, boxes or supplies every day if you need them only occasionally. Remove the load when the trip is over.

Take off roof equipment when it is not in use

Roof boxes, bike racks and other roof-mounted equipment disturb airflow and increase aerodynamic drag, especially at highway speed. Remove them when you are not carrying anything. DOE guidance reports smaller effects for rear-mounted cargo than for roof cargo, but a rear rack can still add weight and drag; use the equipment only when needed and install it as the manufacturer specifies.

Do not sacrifice safety equipment

Never remove a spare tire, emergency kit, child seat or other equipment that your circumstances require merely to chase a small efficiency gain. The useful target is unnecessary cargo, not essential protection.

5. Keep tires at the vehicle’s specified pressure

Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance. DOE reports that correctly inflated tires improve fuel economy by an average of about 0.6%, potentially as much as 3%. Those figures are estimates across conditions, not a guarantee for a particular set of tires.

Use the right pressure

Set pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification on the driver-door placard, fuel-door label or owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle’s target; that number describes the tire’s limit under specified conditions, not necessarily the car’s recommended setting.

Check when tires are cold

Measure pressure before driving, or after the car has been parked long enough for the tires to cool, because heat from driving raises the reading. Check all four tires and the spare if the vehicle has one. Replace missing valve caps and inspect for visible damage or a tire that repeatedly loses pressure. A recurring loss needs professional attention rather than repeated inflation alone.

Make checking easy

A digital tire-pressure gauge is an optional, practical tool. Choose one that is compatible with your valve stems and use it according to its instructions; the important result is matching the vehicle specification, not owning a particular model. An inflator can make corrections convenient, but it does not replace checking the pressure with a gauge.

6. Follow the maintenance instructions that affect efficiency

Use the specified motor oil

Use the oil viscosity and performance grade listed in the owner’s manual. A different grade can affect lubrication and efficiency, especially in conditions for which the engine was designed around a particular specification. Follow the service interval and the requirements for your engine and climate.

Repair significant engine problems

DOE identifies significant engine problems as an efficiency issue. A warning lamp, rough running, persistent misfire, unusual smoke, poor starting or a sudden, unexplained drop in fuel economy warrants diagnosis rather than a driving-style experiment. The correct repair depends on the vehicle; use the manual and a qualified technician.

Do not confuse maintenance with a magic additive

Routine maintenance means keeping the vehicle in the condition its manufacturer specifies. It does not mean buying an unverified fuel-saving product. If a proposed treatment changes oil, tire pressure or another safety-related setting, verify compatibility and instructions before using it.

7. Plan trips to avoid wasted distance and time

Combine errands

Group stops by area and sequence them to avoid crossing the same roads repeatedly. A single planned outing can replace several cold starts and duplicate detours. Keep the plan flexible when a safer or shorter route appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid predictable stop-and-go periods when practical

If your schedule allows, travel outside the worst peak congestion. A shorter route is not always the fastest or most efficient if it involves long queues and repeated acceleration. Compare the complete trip, including time spent stationary, rather than judging a road by distance alone.

Choose another mode for suitable trips

Walking, cycling, public transit or carpooling can eliminate fuel use for an individual car trip when the route, weather, accessibility and personal circumstances make them appropriate. This is a trip-planning choice, not a demand that every journey use the same mode.

Which actions matter in which conditions?

Situation Most useful action Evidence and limits
Stop-and-go city traffic Look ahead, leave space, accelerate moderately and avoid unnecessary idling. DOE estimates aggressive driving can lower mileage 10%–40% in stop-and-go traffic; the range is not an individual guarantee.
Open highway Use a legal, moderate speed; keep speed steady when conditions suit cruise control. DOE’s 2022 summary of an Oak Ridge study found about 27% lower economy at 80 mph than at 60 mph across 74 light-duty vehicles.
Long parking or waiting period Turn the engine off when appropriate and permitted. DOE estimates roughly 0.25–0.5 gallon per hour of idling, varying with engine size and air-conditioning use; the AFDC says to shut off after more than 10 seconds except in traffic.
Any route with a loaded car Remove unnecessary cargo and take off unused roof equipment. DOE estimates about 1% lower economy per additional 100 pounds; roof-drag effects vary by vehicle and equipment.
Any driving condition Set tires to the placard or manual specification and maintain the vehicle. DOE reports about 0.6% average improvement from correct inflation, potentially up to 3%; results vary.

Build a routine you can repeat

Before leaving

  1. Remove items you do not need for the trip.
  2. Check the dashboard for warning lights and confirm that tires appear normal; measure pressure when a scheduled check is due.
  3. Combine nearby errands and select a route that avoids predictable queues when practical.
  4. Secure any required cargo. Remove an unused roof carrier or rack.

During the drive

  1. Scan beyond the vehicle immediately ahead and anticipate changes in traffic.
  2. Accelerate smoothly to the legal speed and avoid repeated surges.
  3. Maintain a safe following distance so you can lift off the accelerator before braking.
  4. Use cruise control only on a suitable, stable highway stretch and disengage it when conditions change.
  5. Turn the engine off for an appropriate parked or stopped wait longer than 10 seconds, except in traffic and subject to safety, local rules and the manual.

At regular service intervals

  1. Check all tire pressures against the manufacturer’s specification, preferably when cold.
  2. Confirm that the oil grade and service schedule match the owner’s manual.
  3. Have warning lights, rough running or a persistent economy drop diagnosed.
  4. Review what you routinely carry and remove items that have become permanent by habit.

How to tell whether a change helped

Judge a habit over several comparable trips rather than one tank. Record the distance and fuel added at each fill-up, and note unusual conditions such as a long traffic jam, strong wind, extreme temperatures, a trailer, a roof box or a different route. Compare like with like: highway trips with highway trips and urban stop-and-go with similar urban driving.

Use the car’s trip computer as feedback, not as an unquestionable measurement. Reset it consistently if you use it, and remember that its estimate can differ from a calculation based on fuel purchased. A change that produces a small result on one vehicle may be larger on another, while weather and traffic can hide an improvement temporarily.

Optional feedback tools

Digital tire-pressure gauge

A gauge is a low-complexity way to perform the tire check that supports the manufacturer’s pressure recommendation. It is useful only when you read it correctly and adjust pressure to the placard or manual. No particular brand or model is required.

OBD-II fuel-economy or driver-feedback device

DOE says feedback devices can help users drive more efficiently and may improve fuel economy by up to 10%. That figure describes possible behavior change, not a guarantee from a device. Before buying one, verify compatibility with your vehicle, what data it actually displays, how it is powered and whether its claims are substantiated. A device cannot compensate for unsafe driving, incorrect tire pressure or an unresolved mechanical fault.

When fuel economy suddenly gets worse

Start with the changes that are easiest to verify: tire pressure, new cargo, a roof rack, unusually high speeds, more idling, heavier traffic and a different route. Then consider weather and air-conditioning use. If the decline persists under similar conditions, check the service schedule and warning lights and arrange a diagnosis for significant engine or vehicle problems. Avoid resetting the trip computer or changing several variables at once if you want to identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pressure repeatedly falls: inspect for a puncture, valve problem or other leak.
  • The car runs roughly or a warning lamp appears: follow the manual’s warning guidance and seek qualified service.
  • Only highway economy changed: review speed, wind, roof cargo and route before assuming a mechanical fault.
  • Only urban economy changed: examine congestion, idle time, short trips and acceleration patterns.

Safety and regional qualifications

The figures above come from U.S. Department of Energy consumer and transportation guidance. Road rules, fuel formulations, weather, vehicle versions and service requirements differ elsewhere. Follow the speed limits and anti-idling rules where you drive, and use the pressure, oil and maintenance specifications for your exact vehicle. Fuel economy is valuable, but control, visibility, occupant protection and legal compliance always take priority.
