Bitcoin is not anonymous by default. Every confirmed transaction, address balance and address history is public and permanent. Before you press Send, you can still reduce unnecessary exposure: use a fresh receiving address, understand who can see your wallet queries, route network traffic through Tor where appropriate, choose inputs deliberately, and treat CoinJoin as an optional technique rather than a guarantee. These steps reduce particular kinds of linkability; they cannot erase information that is recorded on-chain.
What Bitcoin privacy actually means
Bitcoin addresses are pseudonymous, not inherently anonymous. An address does not contain your name, but an exchange account, merchant, public post, wallet provider or other record can connect that address to you. Once a connection is made, the address’s visible history can be examined and related activity may become easier to associate with the same person or organization. Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin as probably “the most transparent payment network in the world.” (Bitcoin.org privacy guidance)
Privacy therefore means limiting unnecessary links between four kinds of information:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identity: your name, account, phone number, email address or other customer records.
- Addresses and transaction history: the public on-chain record of inputs, outputs and amounts.
- Network metadata: information such as the IP address associated with a wallet request.
- Service records: data retained by a custodial exchange, wallet server, payment processor or block-explorer service.
Each privacy measure addresses a different link. Tor can make IP association harder, while fresh addresses limit address reuse. Neither changes the public transaction graph after a transaction is broadcast.

Use this pre-send privacy checklist
Run these checks immediately before sending. They are ordered from the easiest disclosure to overlook to the choices that require a different wallet workflow.
- Confirm the recipient address. Verify it through a trusted channel and check whether it has been used for another payment. Bitcoin.org recommends a new Bitcoin address each time you receive a new payment. Do not publish a personal address on a profile, forum or invoice unless you deliberately want all activity to be associated with that public identity.
- Decide whether the recipient should be able to connect this payment to your other activity. A recipient can see the transaction and the address receiving funds. Use separate wallets or clearly separated address groups for genuinely different purposes, such as household spending and a public donation project.
- Identify who can see your wallet’s addresses. Determine whether your wallet is custodial, relies on a third-party server, or processes blockchain data locally. A provider that receives address queries can learn which addresses or payments your wallet is checking, even when it does not control your private keys.
- Check your network route. If your wallet supports Tor, enable and verify it before synchronizing or broadcasting. Tor can reduce the chance that wallet activity is associated with your ordinary IP address, but it does not hide transaction details from the public blockchain.
- Review the selected inputs. If coin control is available, inspect which unspent outputs will be spent together. Combining outputs can create a visible relationship between their previous histories. Avoid assuming that a wallet’s automatic selection is privacy-neutral.
- Evaluate CoinJoin only if you understand the workflow. CoinJoin combines transaction activity from multiple users to make attribution more difficult. It is not a promise of anonymity, and later spending, wallet implementation and service records can affect the result.
- Separate signing security from privacy. A hardware signing device can keep keys away from an internet-connected computer. It does not by itself provide private address lookups or private transaction construction; those functions come from the companion wallet software.
- Recheck the amount, fee and change destination. Make sure the wallet is not sending change to an address you have publicly associated with another activity. If your wallet exposes a change-address option, understand what it does before changing defaults.
Choose a wallet architecture that matches your privacy needs
The most important architectural question is who downloads and processes blockchain information. Different designs make different trade-offs among privacy, storage, maintenance and convenience.
| Approach | Who can learn address activity? | Network privacy | Transaction controls | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-node wallet such as Bitcoin Core | Blockchain data is processed locally; a wallet provider does not need to receive every address query. | Bitcoin.org lists Tor as a supported option. | Capabilities depend on the wallet interface and configuration; review its current documentation. | Downloads and maintains the blockchain and requires more storage, bandwidth and administration than a lightweight client. |
| Lightweight wallet or client using a server | The server may see the addresses or transactions the client asks about. Exact exposure depends on the design. | Tor support and configuration vary. | Coin control and related features vary by wallet. | Usually faster to set up and less demanding, but convenience can require more trust in the server’s privacy practices. |
| Custodial exchange or hosted wallet | The service can associate account identity with deposits, withdrawals and internal records. | Tor support, logging and account policies are service-specific. | Often limited compared with a self-custodied wallet; exact controls are not stated in the cited sources. | Simple recovery and account access, but you depend on the provider and its records. |
| Privacy-focused non-custodial software | Exposure depends on the wallet’s server model and configuration. | The Wasabi listing identifies built-in Tor; verify current support before relying on it. | The listing identifies CoinJoin and coin control; implementation and availability can change. | Non-custodial means you control keys, not that activity is anonymous. More advanced controls require careful operation. |
Bitcoin.org’s directory describes Wasabi as non-custodial and identifies Tor, CoinJoin and coin-control features, while its Bitcoin Core privacy page describes local blockchain processing and Tor support. Feature lists and wallet versions change, so consult the current official documentation before selecting software (Bitcoin Core privacy features; Wasabi wallet listing).

Use a new receiving address for each payment
Address reuse lets anyone inspecting the chain group otherwise separate incoming payments under one visible identifier. Generate a fresh receiving address for each expected payment when your wallet supports it. This is a receiving-side practice, but it matters before a later send because spending from a reused address can expose a larger, easier-to-recognize history.
Do not publish personal addresses casually
Posting an address on a social profile, public invoice, support page or forum creates an intentional identity-to-address link. If public transparency is the goal, publish a dedicated address or wallet rather than an address used for private spending. Remove the assumption that deleting a post removes the blockchain association; the on-chain history remains public and permanent.

Keep purposes separate
Separate wallets or clearly separated accounts can prevent a donation project, business receipts and personal spending from being treated as one activity set. Separation is a way to reduce accidental links, not a guarantee that an observer cannot connect the wallets through other information such as a common exchange account or public disclosure.
Limit what wallet servers and services learn
A wallet can be non-custodial and still disclose substantial information to a server. If a lightweight client asks a server for the history of several addresses, that server may be able to infer which addresses belong together or when they are active. A custodial service can additionally hold account information and withdrawal records. Bitcoin.org’s privacy guidance distinguishes these service-level disclosures from the public ledger itself (Some things you need to know about Bitcoin).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before sending, look for the wallet’s documented server model and answer:
- Does the wallet query a provider for every address balance and transaction?
- Can you connect to your own full node instead?
- Are addresses sent individually, in batches, or through a privacy-preserving protocol?
- Does the provider retain logs, and is an account required?
- Can the wallet operate over Tor, and does Tor cover synchronization as well as broadcast?
If the answers are unclear, treat the provider as able to observe the queries it receives. Do not assume that encrypting the connection prevents the service from reading the addresses inside that connection.
Use a full node when local verification and query privacy justify the cost
A full node downloads and processes blockchain data locally. This avoids sending every address lookup to a wallet server and lets the wallet verify the chain using its own local data. The trade-off is practical: initial synchronization, storage, bandwidth, backups and software maintenance become your responsibility. A full node does not hide a transaction after broadcast, and it does not automatically prevent an exchange, recipient or other party from linking an address to you.

For a privacy-oriented setup, connect the wallet to the node you operate, confirm that synchronization is complete, and check which network interface the wallet uses. Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin Core documentation describes Tor as an available way to reduce IP association. Follow the current Bitcoin Core and Tor documentation for installation and configuration because operating-system paths and settings change (Bitcoin Core privacy features).
Understand what Tor protects—and what it cannot
Tor routes supported network traffic through the Tor network so the destination is less likely to see your ordinary IP address. In a Bitcoin workflow, that can reduce the association between a wallet’s network activity and your home or mobile connection. It addresses network metadata, not the identity links embedded in addresses, exchange records or public posts.
- Tor can help with: reducing direct IP association for wallet queries and broadcasts when the wallet is correctly configured to use it.
- Tor cannot help with: hiding the amount, inputs, outputs or address history written to the public blockchain.
- Tor cannot undo: a previously reused address, a public identity disclosure or a service’s existing account records.
- Tor requires verification: a browser running through Tor does not prove that your Bitcoin wallet is using Tor. Check the wallet’s own network status and logs.
Use Tor as one layer alongside address hygiene and an appropriate wallet architecture. Treat it as a way to reduce one class of metadata, not as an anonymity switch.
Use coin control to make deliberate input choices
Bitcoin transactions spend unspent outputs. When several outputs are spent together, observers may infer that their histories are related or controlled by the same wallet. Coin control exposes the wallet’s available outputs so you can decide which ones to use rather than accepting an opaque automatic selection.
A practical coin-control review
- Open the wallet’s send screen and enable its coin-control or input-selection view, if available.
- List the candidate outputs, including their amounts, labels, confirmation status and known source.
- Exclude outputs whose history you do not want associated with the payment, provided the remaining amount can cover the payment and fee.
- Check whether the transaction will create change and where that change will go.
- Review the final input list before signing; do not infer that a smaller number of inputs is always more private, because the right choice depends on what each output already reveals.
Coin control is a decision aid, not an unlinkability guarantee. Wallet interfaces differ, and some wallets do not expose this control at all. If you cannot identify the inputs being spent, assume the wallet’s selection may create links you did not intend.

Consider CoinJoin without treating it as a promise
CoinJoin combines transaction activity from multiple users in one transaction to make straightforward attribution more difficult. Bitcoin.org’s developer documentation discusses the transaction-linkability problem, and the Wasabi listing identifies a CoinJoin workflow (Bitcoin developer guide: Transactions; Wasabi wallet listing).
CoinJoin has important limits:
- The wallet’s implementation, coordinator model and current version affect how the process works.
- Participation does not remove the public transaction; it changes how easily an observer can attribute parts of it.
- Spending joined and unjoined outputs together later can create new links.
- Counterparties, exchanges and other records outside the chain can still identify activity.
- Fees, waiting time, minimum amounts and available liquidity depend on the wallet and service and are not fixed by the cited sources.
If you use CoinJoin, read the wallet’s current documentation, understand which outputs are considered joined, keep those outputs separated when the wallet recommends it, and do not advertise the result as anonymous.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep hardware signing in its proper role
A hardware wallet or signing device protects private keys by keeping signing operations in a dedicated device. That is valuable for key security, but it does not determine how addresses are queried, which node is used, whether Tor is enabled or how inputs are selected. Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 listing explicitly says privacy features are provided by the software wallet used with the device (BitBox02 wallet listing).
When pairing a signing device with a wallet, evaluate the companion software using the same questions as any other wallet: who receives address queries, whether it supports Tor, whether it offers coin control, and whether it can use your own node. Never buy a signing device on the assumption that the hardware alone makes a transaction private.

- Define the separation you need. Decide whether the payment should be associated with a public project, a business activity or your personal wallet.
- Create or select the receiving address carefully. Confirm the recipient and avoid reusing an address for unrelated incoming payments.
- Check the wallet’s data path. Prefer local node processing when the maintenance burden is acceptable; otherwise understand what the wallet server can observe.
- Enable the wallet’s Tor connection if appropriate. Verify the wallet—not merely another application—is using Tor.
- Inspect inputs and change. Use coin control where available and avoid combining outputs whose histories should remain separate.
- Review external records. Remember that an exchange withdrawal, invoice, email thread or public post can identify a transaction even when your network route is private.
- Sign only after the final review. Confirm the destination, amount, fee, inputs and change address on the wallet and, for a hardware device, on the device’s own screen.
- After broadcast, preserve separation. Do not immediately combine the resulting output with unrelated funds if doing so would recreate the link you were trying to avoid.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I used a new address, so I am anonymous.”
A fresh address limits reuse, but an exchange withdrawal, a public post or a recipient’s records can still identify it. Keep the address practice, then review the service and network layers as well.
“Tor hides my transaction.”
Tor can reduce IP association; it does not hide the on-chain transaction. Verify Tor for the wallet’s own traffic and continue using fresh addresses and deliberate input selection.
“Non-custodial means the wallet cannot see anything.”
Control of private keys and privacy from the wallet server are different properties. A non-custodial lightweight wallet may still send address queries to a provider. Check the server model or connect to your own node.
“CoinJoin permanently breaks every link.”
CoinJoin can complicate attribution, but later spending and outside records can restore links. Follow the wallet’s separation guidance and avoid describing the result as guaranteed anonymity.
“My hardware wallet handles privacy.”
The signing device protects keys. The companion wallet determines address discovery, node use, Tor support and transaction controls. Evaluate both components.
“Selecting fewer inputs is always better.”
Input count alone does not determine privacy. The histories and ownership clues attached to those inputs matter. Use coin control to avoid an unintended combination, then inspect the resulting change.
What a realistic privacy goal looks like
A defensible goal is to minimize avoidable disclosures before sending: do not reuse addresses, do not publish personal addresses without intending the link, reduce unnecessary wallet-server queries, separate purposes, protect network metadata with Tor when suitable, and choose inputs consciously. The public ledger remains transparent and permanent, so no combination of wallet features can promise complete anonymity. Bitcoin.org’s guidance treats these practices as privacy protection, not as a way to make Bitcoin transactions disappear from public view (Protect your privacy).
