Start by increasing text size with your phone’s or app’s built-in controls. If you are designing a site or app, make its text resize and reflow on a narrow screen without hiding content or forcing horizontal scrolling. Then check contrast and make sure readers can adjust spacing; use screen magnification if those changes are not enough.
If you’re reading on a phone
Increase the text size first
Look for text-size or display-size controls in your phone’s accessibility or display settings, or in the app you are using. Labels and locations vary by device, operating-system version, and app, so use the settings search if you cannot find them. Increase the size until reading feels comfortable, then check that the app still shows the words and controls you need.
Some apps do not follow the phone’s text-size setting, and some provide their own controls. If larger system text has no effect, check the app’s settings or try another way of viewing the content. On Apple platforms, Dynamic Type is a systemwide setting for adjusting text size for comfort and legibility; Apple’s guidance for interface designers is to support larger text, ideally up to 200%. Apple’s accessibility guidance describes the feature and the design goal.

Make adjustments gradually and try reading a normal paragraph, not just a large heading. The goal is a size that lets you follow a line comfortably while keeping the page usable. Check whether you can still read labels, captions, menu items, and button text. If increasing text causes a control label to disappear or a line to be cut off, try the app’s own text-size option or a different reading view rather than assuming the larger setting is unusable everywhere.

Adjust the display and appearance
Text that seems clear in one setting may become difficult to distinguish in bright light or when screen brightness is low. If changing text size is not enough, try adjusting display brightness and, where available, text or display contrast and light or dark appearance. Recheck the actual page after each change: an appearance option can affect text, backgrounds, icons, and controls differently.
Contrast is a measurable design property, but meeting a ratio does not guarantee comfortable reading for every person or display. Google’s Android accessibility guidance cites WCAG-style minimum contrast ratios of 4.5:1 for small text and 3:1 for large text. These are text-to-background contrast thresholds, not recommended font sizes. Google explains the contrast ratios.
When you assess contrast, look at the text as it appears against its actual background, including text placed on a colored panel or over an image. A nominally high-contrast design can still be difficult to read if the chosen typeface is thin, the text is very small, or the display conditions make the letters hard to distinguish. Likewise, changing to dark appearance does not automatically improve every page: inspect the words and controls after making the change.
Use magnification when enlargement is not enough
A phone’s screen magnification feature or another visual reading aid can help when larger text and display adjustments still do not make content comfortable to read. Unlike increasing the text size in an app, magnification may enlarge a view without causing the page’s layout to reflow. W3C notes that magnifiers can adjust text size, spacing, and color. W3C’s web-accessibility tips discuss visual aids and designing for people with different needs.
Magnification can make only part of a page visible at once, so check whether you can still find links, controls, and the next part of the text. Built-in enlargement is a better first step when it works because a responsive app or page can rearrange its content around the larger text.
Think of enlargement and magnification as different tools. A text-size setting asks the app or page to render larger letters, which may cause lines to wrap and layout elements to move. A magnifier enlarges what is on screen and may require you to move around the enlarged view. If the words grow but the page remains easy to navigate, text resizing is usually the more convenient option. If it is still too small, magnification can provide another level of help. No particular physical phone magnifier is a universal solution; fit and handling depend on the person and device.

If you’re designing a site or app
Make content fit a narrow screen—and enlarged text
Design for the smallest screen your audience is likely to use, and test with text enlarged as well as at its default size. At narrow widths, a single-column reading layout is often easier to follow than multiple columns. Let words wrap, and allow content and controls to move or stack when the viewport narrows or text grows.
Ordinary text should not require readers to zoom or scroll horizontally to follow a line. Apple’s design tips say primary content should fit the device screen without zooming or horizontal scrolling. W3C also recommends text size and line width that support readability on small screens. Apple’s UI design tips and W3C’s web-accessibility tips offer guidance for these layouts.
Check more than the main paragraph. Navigation, buttons, forms, captions, and dialogs can overflow or overlap when text grows. A page that looks fine at its default size may still cut off a button label, hide an action, or make a form unusable at a larger setting.
Reflow means the content adjusts to the available width and text size: lines wrap, columns can become one column, and controls may move below or beside related content rather than being clipped. A responsive layout should preserve the order and relationships people need to understand and operate the page. Review long words, addresses, headings, and labels as well as ordinary body copy, since these can expose a fixed-width element that looks fine with shorter text.
Test the smallest intended viewport and enlarged text together, not just as separate checks. A layout that fits a phone at the default size may stop fitting once letters grow. Look for two-dimensional scrolling in ordinary reading content, hidden lines, truncated controls, and actions that become difficult to locate. If a control needs more room, let it expand or wrap instead of shrinking its text until it is difficult to read.

Do not assume that one font size or spacing setting will suit everyone. Apple recommends Dynamic Type for Apple-platform interfaces and says designs should ideally support enlargement up to 200%. Its Human Interface Guidelines also give 17 pt as a default and 11 pt as a minimum for custom text sizes on iOS and iPadOS. Those figures describe that platform guidance; they are not universal web-font rules or a substitute for testing at enlarged settings. Apple’s accessibility guidelines provide the platform context.

For web content, WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.12 tests whether content remains readable and operable when a user overrides text spacing. The test values are:
- Line height of at least 1.5 times the font size.
- Paragraph spacing of at least 2 times the font size.
- Letter spacing of at least 0.12 times the font size.
- Word spacing of at least 0.16 times the font size.
These are resilience-test values, not settings every page must use by default. The key is that the user’s override should not clip text, overlap content, hide controls, or make an action impossible. W3C’s explanation of WCAG 2.2 text spacing describes the intent and the test.
In practical terms, spacing overrides may make lines and paragraphs taller and longer. A fixed-height text box or a control that assumes a short label can break even when the font size itself has not changed. Let containers grow with their contents, and check that readers can still reach every link and action after applying the spacing changes. The test is not whether the page keeps precisely the same visual appearance; it is whether the information and functionality remain available.
Choose type that holds up at small sizes
Typeface, weight, and spacing affect how distinguishable characters are, but there is no universally best font or size for every person, script, and reading context. Avoid relying on very thin strokes for small text: Apple says thicker weights are easier to read at smaller sizes and that thin custom fonts may need to be larger. Test the actual typeface and text you plan to use rather than judging legibility from a headline alone.
Digital.gov advises that mobile text smaller than 12 pt may be challenging to read. Treat that as general guidance, not a universal pass/fail accessibility standard; platform conventions and user needs differ. Digital.gov’s mobile guidance includes its note on font size.
Small type can be especially hard to read when the strokes are faint or letters crowd together. If compact text is difficult to distinguish, consider a heavier weight or a larger size and test the result on a real narrow layout. Do not compensate for a hard-to-read typeface only by increasing contrast or bolding every element: inspect whether the actual characters remain distinct in context. A size that works for one script or use case may not work for another.

Check contrast in realistic conditions
Use sufficient contrast between text and its background, then inspect it in the light and dark appearances your product offers. Android’s cited WCAG-style thresholds are 4.5:1 for small text and 3:1 for large text. They are useful checks, but actual legibility also depends on the font, size, background, display, brightness, and whether text has been enlarged. Do not treat a ratio alone as proof that a page is comfortable to read.
Contrast checks should cover the full interface, not just the main body text. Inspect labels, captions, links, and text in buttons against the surfaces behind them. If colors or backgrounds change in another appearance mode, verify those combinations too. Recheck at larger text settings because a font’s weight or appearance may change and the surrounding layout may expose new text or backgrounds.
Keep spacing overrides from breaking the page
A common design mistake is to check only the default line spacing and then use fixed dimensions that cannot accommodate user preferences. WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.12 is specifically about what happens when a reader changes spacing to improve their experience. W3C describes its intent as ensuring that content remains readable and operable when people override author-specified text spacing. Build and test with that outcome in mind: all words should remain visible, and all functions should remain usable.
Do not interpret the WCAG values as the one ideal spacing recipe for every default design. They are a test for whether a user’s spacing choices can be applied without loss of content or functionality. A design may choose its own initial typography, but should not prevent the reader from overriding line height, paragraph gaps, letter spacing, or word spacing. After applying the override, inspect both a long paragraph and dense interface elements such as menus or forms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical legibility check
- Test a narrow viewport. Open the page or app at a phone-sized width. Confirm that ordinary text wraps and primary content does not require horizontal scrolling or zooming.
- Enlarge the text. Use the platform’s text-size controls or the app’s text control. Check that words, navigation, forms, and actions remain visible and usable.
- Increase spacing. For web content, apply the WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.12 override values for line height, paragraph spacing, letter spacing, and word spacing. Look for clipping, overlap, or lost functionality.
- Inspect contrast and appearance. Check text against its real background in light and dark modes where offered, and consider how it looks at lower brightness. Verify contrast ratios, then assess the rendered text itself.
- Try the reading aid. If resizing and layout adjustments are insufficient, test the phone’s magnification option and confirm that content and controls remain findable.
Run through the check on more than one kind of content. A long article can reveal line-length or wrapping problems; a form can expose labels and buttons that no longer fit; and a menu can show whether actions remain easy to find. Test both a normal text setting and the largest enlargement your interface is intended to support. On Apple platforms, that design target is ideally up to 200%.

Common fixes that backfire
- Making everything larger without testing layout: Bigger type can expose fixed-width containers, clipped labels, or overlapping controls. Let the layout adapt and retest after resizing.
- Choosing a thin typeface for compact text: Delicate strokes can be harder to distinguish at small sizes. Test a heavier weight or larger size rather than assuming one font works everywhere.
- Using contrast ratios as the only test: A threshold does not guarantee that actual text is comfortable under every display condition. Review the rendered page at multiple sizes and appearances.
- Hard-coding extra spacing that breaks the page: WCAG’s spacing values test whether user overrides are supported; they are not a mandate to apply those exact values as the default. Make the layout resilient to the overrides.
- Relying on magnification before trying reflow: Magnification can enlarge a view without rearranging the page. First make text resizable and content reflow; offer magnification as an additional aid.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make text easier to read on my phone?
Start with the phone’s text-size setting or the app’s own text control, then adjust brightness or appearance if needed. Check that larger text has not hidden labels or controls. If enlargement still is not enough, try the phone’s screen magnification or another visual reading aid.
What is a good minimum font size for mobile text?
There is no universal size that works for every person, platform, typeface, script, and situation. Digital.gov says mobile text smaller than 12 pt may be challenging to read, but that is general guidance rather than a universal accessibility pass/fail standard. Apple’s cited 17 pt default and 11 pt minimum are specific to custom text sizes on iOS and iPadOS.
What contrast ratio should small text have?
Google’s Android accessibility guidance cites WCAG-style minimum text contrast ratios of 4.5:1 for small text and 3:1 for large text. Those thresholds are useful checks, but a ratio alone cannot guarantee comfortable reading across all fonts, displays, brightness levels, and appearances.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does WCAG require every page to use extra-wide letter and line spacing?
No. WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.12 tests whether content remains readable and operable when a user overrides text spacing. Its test values are line height of at least 1.5 times font size, paragraph spacing of 2 times font size, letter spacing of 0.12 times font size, and word spacing of 0.16 times font size. The design should tolerate those overrides; they are not mandatory default settings.
Is text enlargement better than screen magnification?
They work differently. Text enlargement can make an app or page reflow around larger letters, while magnification may enlarge the current view without rearranging the layout. Try built-in text-size controls first when they work; use magnification as an additional aid if you need more enlargement, and check that you can still find your place and operate controls.
How can I check whether a website is readable at larger text sizes?
Open it at a narrow phone-sized width, enlarge the text, and apply the WCAG 2.2 text-spacing override values. Confirm that text wraps, content is not clipped or overlapped, and links, buttons, forms, and other actions remain visible and usable. Repeat in light and dark appearances if the site offers them.
The Bottom Line
For readers, try built-in text enlargement first, then adjust the display and use magnification if needed. For designers, make narrow layouts reflow, support enlarged text and spacing overrides, and test real content against its backgrounds. The page should remain readable and operable as people adjust it to suit themselves.
