On Android, the most reliable starting point is Gboard’s Glide typing setup: enable it, confirm that the correct language and layout are active, keep only one or two languages enabled while testing, and separate swipe-recognition problems from unwanted autocorrections. If the keyboard also lags or registers the wrong keys, update Gboard and clear its cache. Google does not publish a measured percentage improvement for these steps, so treat them as configuration and troubleshooting measures rather than a guaranteed accuracy boost.
Start with the direct fix
Gboard calls swipe typing Glide typing. Open a text field, display Gboard’s settings, and make sure Glide typing is enabled. To enter a word, slide across the letters in sequence and lift your finger when the word is complete. Google documents this gesture and notes that it is unavailable in some languages, so language support must be checked before you assume the feature is malfunctioning. See Google’s slide-to-type instructions.
When the result is wrong, work through the checks in this order: verify the active language and layout, reduce the keyboard to one or two active languages, inspect Text correction settings, then update Gboard. Clear the cache only when you also have lag or incorrect key presses. Clearing Gboard’s data or storage is a later, more disruptive reset because it returns the keyboard to its default state.

- Tap a text field to open Gboard.
- Open the keyboard’s feature menu and choose Settings. If you do not see a settings button, press and hold the comma key, then drag your finger to the Settings icon. Google describes both access methods in its Gboard setup guide.
- Remain in Gboard settings while you test each change. Reopen the keyboard in the same text field after changing an option so you can compare the result consistently.
If your phone uses a manufacturer keyboard rather than Gboard, these labels may not exist. The instructions below apply specifically to Gboard; other keyboards have their own gesture and language controls.
Turn on Glide typing
- In Gboard settings, open Glide typing.
- Turn on the Glide typing switch.
- Return to a text field and test a familiar, short word.
- Place your finger on the first letter, move across each letter in the word without lifting, and lift at the final letter. Gboard then proposes or enters the word.
For a wrong result, use the displayed suggestion when it contains the intended word, or edit the word manually. Google documents replacing a word by selecting a suggestion. A glide trace is not committed until you lift your finger, so lifting too early can end the word before the final letters are included.
Use the documented gesture consistently
Gboard’s support material specifies the movement, not a particular speed, pressure, screen size, or practice schedule. There is no controlled accuracy figure in Google’s help pages for slowing down, pressing harder, changing your finger angle, or buying an accessory. Use the same basic motion while troubleshooting so that settings, rather than a changing technique, are the variable.

Begin on the first character, trace through the spelling in order, and release after the last character. Do not lift between letters; a lift signals the end of that word. After the word appears, check the suggestion strip before continuing if the sentence is important.
For a sentence
Complete one word, lift, and then begin the next word. Gboard uses the lift as the boundary between words. If a word is misrecognized, correct it from the suggestion strip or with ordinary tap typing before proceeding.

When the keyboard seems to ignore a trace
First confirm that Glide typing is enabled and that the selected language supports it. Google explicitly warns that glide typing does not work in every language. A missing or inconsistent glide feature can therefore be a language-support limitation rather than a hardware fault.
Check the language and layout
Language selection is one of the most important accuracy checks because Gboard interprets a gesture against the active dictionary and keyboard layout. In Gboard settings, open Languages and select the language and layout you actually use. Google’s keyboard-use instructions explain language and layout management.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Gboard settings, then choose Languages.
- Confirm that the intended language is installed and that its selected layout matches the letters shown on your keyboard.
- Return to the keyboard and hold the space bar to switch between enabled languages.
- Check the language indicator before testing a swipe. A gesture evaluated under a different language can produce a plausible but unwanted word.
Google does not support glide typing in every language. If the language you need is not supported, changing speed or clearing the cache cannot add that capability. You can still use tap typing for that language or switch to a supported language when glide entry is required.
Reduce language ambiguity while testing
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying one or two active languages for smoother typing. This is setup advice, not a measured promise that recognition accuracy will rise by a specific amount. Multiple active languages can make it harder to tell whether a wrong word came from the gesture itself, the selected dictionary, or an unintended language switch.
- Open Languages in Gboard settings.
- Temporarily leave only the language or two languages you use most often.
- Test the same words in the same text field.
- If the result improves, add other languages back one at a time and test after each addition.
When you need several languages, use the space bar to switch deliberately rather than assuming Gboard is still using the previous language. Record which language is active when a word is wrong; that observation is more useful than changing several settings at once.

Tell recognition errors apart from correction errors
A swipe can be recognized correctly and then altered by prediction or automatic correction. If the letters you traced seem to produce the right word briefly but a different word is accepted, inspect Text correction rather than treating the event as a glide-recognition failure. Google lists Text correction, the suggestion strip, Smart Compose, and auto-capitalization among the settings to review in its Gboard troubleshooting guidance.
Review the suggestion strip
Keep the suggestion strip visible while testing so you can see alternatives Gboard offers for the same gesture. If the intended word is present, tap it instead of repeatedly tracing the word. This confirms that Gboard generated the word but selected a different suggestion.
Review automatic changes
Open Gboard settings > Text correction and examine the correction options that affect your workflow. Settings such as Smart Compose and auto-capitalization change suggestions or text edits; they are not documented as changes to the underlying glide-recognition engine. Turn an option off only when its automatic edits are the problem, then test again.
Use a controlled comparison
Type the same short list of words three ways: glide them with the suggestion strip visible, glide them and accept the first result, and tap-type them. If tap typing is correct but glide typing is not, focus on Glide typing, language support, and active-language selection. If both methods produce unwanted substitutions, Text correction or the selected language is a more likely explanation.
Update Gboard before deeper troubleshooting
When glide entry is accompanied by lag, missed touches, or incorrect key presses outside the swipe itself, Google recommends updating Gboard. Install the available Gboard update through your phone’s app-update mechanism, then test again in a text field. An update can change menus and behavior, so the setting names you see may not exactly match an older screenshot or guide.

Do not describe an update as a proven accuracy increase: Google’s troubleshooting page presents it as a way to address keyboard problems, not as a quantified swipe-recognition improvement.
Clear the cache only for broader input problems
Google’s troubleshooting steps include clearing Gboard’s cache when the keyboard lags or registers incorrect key presses. Use your Android system’s app settings to open Gboard’s storage controls and choose Clear cache; the exact path and labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Use cache clearing when: the keyboard is slow, freezes briefly, or produces incorrect key presses beyond a single misrecognized word.
- Do not treat it as proof of an accuracy gain: Google does not publish a test showing that cache clearing improves glide-word recognition by a particular amount.
- Test after clearing: reopen a text field and repeat the same words so you can tell whether the broader input problem changed.
Understand the more disruptive data reset
Android may offer both Clear cache and Clear data or Clear storage for Gboard. Google warns that clearing Gboard’s data or storage resets it to its default state. That makes it a substantially more disruptive step than clearing temporary cache files.
- Try the Glide typing, language, correction, update, and cache checks first.
- If you still have persistent keyboard faults, open Gboard’s app storage controls and read the warning attached to the data or storage reset.
- Proceed only if you are prepared to configure Gboard again, including languages and personal preferences.
- Re-enable Glide typing and your preferred language after the reset, then test before changing additional options.
A data reset is troubleshooting for a damaged or misbehaving keyboard state. It is not an evidence-based way to make a healthy glide engine more accurate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose personalization settings deliberately
Google says Gboard can adapt to your usage patterns and provides controls to turn personalization off. Its troubleshooting guidance says turning personalization off can reduce input lag. That makes personalization a preference and performance choice, not a guaranteed accuracy setting.

If lag is your main complaint
Try the personalization control described in Gboard’s settings and compare typing responsiveness. Keep the change only if it addresses the lag you experience; do not assume that a faster-feeling keyboard has a higher word-recognition rate.
If privacy is your main concern
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting and privacy information describes what Gboard sends and provides controls for learned data. Google says saved words are not sent and can be deleted. Its separate explanation of how Gboard gets better covers personalization and optional audio-donation controls. Review those controls based on your privacy preference rather than expecting them to repair a particular swipe error.
Use a symptom-based troubleshooting path
The following sequence avoids changing unrelated settings and ties each action to the problem it is intended to address.
| What you observe | First check | Why this check fits |
|---|---|---|
| Glide typing is missing or never starts | Enable Glide typing and verify language support | Google documents the feature as a Gboard setting and warns that not every language supports it. |
| The wrong language seems to interpret the gesture | Check the language indicator and hold the space bar to switch | Gboard can have multiple enabled languages, and the space bar switches among them. |
| Suggestions are plausible but the accepted word is wrong | Review the suggestion strip and Text correction options | Prediction and automatic edits can change text after a gesture is recognized. |
| The keyboard lags or registers incorrect key presses generally | Update Gboard, then clear its cache | These are Google’s documented troubleshooting steps for broader keyboard input problems. |
| You are considering Clear data or Clear storage | Read the reset warning and treat it as a last-resort configuration reset | Google says the action returns Gboard to its default state. |
Account for Android and manufacturer differences
Google’s help pages are written for Gboard, but menu locations can change on custom Android versions. A phone maker may place keyboard settings under a system Settings app, rename a storage menu, or ship a different default keyboard. If a path above does not match your screen, open the keyboard while a text field is active and look for its feature menu or settings shortcut, then locate the equivalent Glide typing, Languages, Text correction, and storage controls.
Do not infer that a missing option is a hardware defect. First determine which keyboard is active and whether the selected language supports glide typing. Only then investigate lag, touch registration, or app-state problems.
What these steps can and cannot establish
These settings can make sure Gboard is configured for the intended language, reduce confusion from multiple active languages, prevent unwanted automatic edits, and address general keyboard lag. They cannot guarantee that every gesture will be recognized correctly, and Google does not provide a published accuracy rate or percentage improvement for the sequence.
The available guidance also does not establish that a particular swipe speed, finger pressure, phone size, screen protector, stylus, or paid keyboard improves recognition. Avoid spending money on those items as a proven fix. Start with the free Gboard controls and troubleshooting steps documented by Google.
A practical final check
- Confirm that Gboard, rather than another keyboard, is active.
- Enable Glide typing in Gboard settings.
- Use a language and layout that match the words you are entering, and verify that the language supports glide typing.
- Temporarily limit active languages to one or two while diagnosing errors.
- Watch the suggestion strip and inspect Text correction before blaming the gesture engine.
- Update Gboard if lag or incorrect key presses affect ordinary typing.
- Clear the cache for those broader input problems, but reserve Clear data or Clear storage for a full reset because it returns Gboard to defaults.
- Review personalization controls according to your lag and privacy priorities.
With those checks complete, any remaining errors are easier to classify: an unsupported language, an unintended language switch, an automatic correction, or a general keyboard-input fault. That classification tells you which setting to change instead of repeatedly retracing the same word.
