The safest way to improve a Steam Machine game’s performance is to measure first, then reduce only the settings that are creating a bottleneck. Start from the system’s 1080p default, install SteamOS updates, use the in-game performance monitor during a repeatable scene, and change one game setting at a time. Keep the image-quality options that do not address the bottleneck, and lower resolution only after less visible compromises have been tested.
There is no universal Steam Machine graphics preset. A game’s defaults, its rendering engine, your display and the scene on screen all affect the result. The procedure below gives you a repeatable way to trade detail for steadier frame delivery without blindly selecting a low preset.
What Steam Machine uses by default
Steam Machine uses 1080p as the system default game resolution. Steam describes 1080p as the resolution selected as Default in the Display dropdown and as the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes it a sensible starting point, not a guarantee that every game will run best at 1080p on every display.

Before changing graphics: establish a baseline
A baseline tells you whether a change actually helped. Without one, it is easy to mistake a quieter scene, a different camera angle or a one-time hitch for an improvement.
Use a repeatable section
- Choose a level, save point or route that you can repeat. Prefer a busy area with the effects that normally cause slowdowns rather than an empty corridor.
- Play the same section for long enough to encounter the problem. Record whether motion feels steady, whether controls respond consistently and when any hitch occurs.
- Open Steam’s in-game performance monitor and note the frame-rate behavior together with the CPU, GPU and memory indicators. Look at consistency and the lowest moments, not only the displayed average.
- Take a screenshot or write down the current preset, resolution and important custom options so you can revert a change.
An average frame rate can look acceptable while individual frames arrive irregularly. That uneven delivery is perceived as judder or stutter, so a stable result with a slightly lower average can feel better than a higher but erratic number.
What the performance monitor can tell you
The monitor exposes frame-rate and hardware-load information intended to help identify whether the GPU, CPU or memory is under pressure. Treat it as a diagnostic aid rather than a promise of a particular frame rate. Some metrics may not be available on every operating system or hardware configuration.

- GPU pressure: If GPU utilization is consistently high during the slow section while CPU activity is comparatively less constrained, rendering effects, resolution or scene detail are likely limiting performance.
- CPU pressure: If one or more CPU indicators remain heavily loaded while the GPU is not fully occupied, simulation, artificial intelligence, physics, draw-call submission or a busy game world may be the limiting factor. Lowering texture quality alone is unlikely to solve this type of limit.
- Memory pressure: A memory indicator that rises during traversal or when new assets load can accompany hitching. Texture and asset-streaming options may matter more than shadow quality in that case.
- Inconsistent frame delivery: A reasonable average with sudden drops or uneven pacing points to a consistency problem. Keep testing the same sequence after each change instead of judging from the average shown after a short run.
These are practical interpretations, not a Steam-published ranking of settings. Confirm each diagnosis by changing one relevant option and repeating the same test.
Update SteamOS and restart before tuning
Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance starts with installing available system updates and restarting. Do this before spending time on graphics adjustments: a software update can change compatibility or stability, and a restart clears a temporary state that could otherwise distort your comparison.
- Open the Steam Machine’s system update controls and install any pending SteamOS or Steam software update.
- Restart the machine after the update completes.
- Launch the game again and repeat the baseline section with the same display mode and settings.
If the behavior changes after an update, record the new baseline. Do not assume a setting change caused an improvement when the software version changed at the same time.
Check the game’s compatibility context
Review the game’s Steam compatibility information before interpreting a graphics problem as a tuning problem. Steam’s cited software guidance discusses Deck Verified classifications and notes that the information may also apply to some SteamOS-compatible third-party AMD devices. It also directs owners of non-Deck hardware to the device manufacturer for hardware-specific support.

Do not treat a Deck rating as a Steam Machine-specific certification. A compatibility label can provide useful context about controls, text readability or expected behavior, but it does not establish a universal Steam Machine graphics preset or a guaranteed frame rate.
A measured graphics-setting sequence
After updating and recording the baseline, change one variable at a time. The order below is a practical way to preserve visible quality; it is not an official Steam ranking of which setting always gives the biggest gain. A particular game may behave differently.
1. Try the game’s lower preset as a diagnostic
Select the next lower graphics preset and repeat the same scene. This quickly shows whether the game has meaningful headroom at the current resolution. If the result is smooth but visibly worse, return to the original preset and make individual changes instead.
Presets often alter several options at once, so they are useful for finding the direction of the problem but poor for identifying the least visible compromise. Keep a note of every option the preset changed if the game provides a summary.
2. Change individual demanding options
Restore the original preset and reduce one option that is plausibly related to the monitor reading. Test, record the result and then decide whether to keep it. Common examples include shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, foliage or view distance, but the exact cost and visual effect are game-specific. Steam’s official guidance supports reducing the graphics preset or adjusting individual settings; it does not publish a universal per-setting gain.
Use the game’s preview or description where available. A setting that affects distant shadows may be difficult to notice during normal play, while a setting that controls texture detail can make surfaces look immediately softer. Keep the latter higher if memory and GPU readings remain comfortable.
3. Preserve textures when memory and GPU headroom allow
Texture quality primarily changes surface detail and memory use. If the memory indicator is not showing pressure and the GPU is not saturated, lowering textures may deliver little benefit while making walls, characters and objects look blurrier. Keep texture quality at the highest level that does not create streaming hitches or memory-related problems.

If the monitor points to memory pressure or hitching as new assets load, test a lower texture or asset-streaming option. Use the same traversal route because the problem may appear only when the game loads a new area.

When the GPU is the clear limit, test options that add secondary lighting, reflections, volumetric fog, heavy post-processing or distant detail. The best candidate is the one whose visual contribution you notice least in ordinary play. Compare the result in motion, not only in a static screenshot: some effects are costly mainly when the camera moves or many objects are visible.
Do not lower every effect at once. If the first change produces stable frame delivery, restore other options and keep the higher-quality image. This prevents an unnecessarily flat or empty-looking scene.
5. Test anti-aliasing and upscaling carefully
Games that offer anti-aliasing modes or an internal resolution scale can provide a middle ground between native 1080p and a visibly lower output resolution. The names and behavior differ by game. Compare thin geometry, foliage, motion and distant text in the same scene. A mode that looks sharp in a still image may shimmer while moving; another may soften the picture but remove distracting jagged edges.
Keep the option that produces the more convincing moving image at the steadiness you need. Do not assume that a particular upscaling mode or percentage has the same cost or quality in every title.

When and how to lower resolution
If individual options do not provide enough headroom, compare the game’s current resolution with lower choices. Resolution is often an effective way to reduce GPU work, but it has the most obvious effect on fine detail and text, especially on a large external display.
- Confirm the game’s current resolution and whether it is using a separate internal-resolution scale.
- Change the game’s resolution one step at a time rather than changing the system setting immediately.
- Repeat the baseline route and inspect both motion and readable text.
- Keep the lowest change that solves the demanding scene without making the image unacceptably soft.
Steam Machine’s 1080p default is intended to provide a good out-of-the-box experience and is used for Verified testing, but neither fact means every title must remain at 1080p. A lower resolution may be appropriate for a particularly demanding game or display, while another game may need only a shadow or effects adjustment.

The table describes a decision framework, not guaranteed gains. Steam’s official material does not provide quantified improvements for these individual changes.
Separate display quality from game performance
Steam Machine’s display controls include HDR, SDR brightness, native color temperature and RGB output range under Display > Advanced. These options can materially change how the final picture looks, but the cited guidance does not claim that they increase frame rate.
HDR and SDR brightness
Use HDR when the display and game support it and the result is visually correct. If highlights are clipped, shadows are crushed or the game looks washed out, compare the game’s own HDR calibration with the system setting. For an SDR game or desktop, adjust SDR brightness so the image is comfortable without mistaking a brighter picture for better performance.
Color temperature
Native color temperature affects the warmth or coolness of the image. Choose the mode that matches your preference or a calibrated workflow; it is a picture decision, not a way to reduce GPU load.
RGB output range
Set the RGB range to match the display’s expected signal. A mismatch can make blacks look gray or crush shadow detail. Correcting it can make a game appear better without changing any rendering setting, but it does not remove the work the game is doing.
Because the right picture depends on the Steam Machine, the display and the individual game, calibrate these controls after performance tuning or when diagnosing a display mismatch. Do not use them as automatic performance fixes.

Diagnose common symptoms
The average frame rate looks fine, but movement stutters
Return to the repeatable route and watch frame-rate consistency in the performance monitor. Note whether the hitch occurs when entering a new area, during a particular effect or at a predictable CPU-heavy moment. Test one setting associated with that event, then repeat the route. If the average remains similar but the worst moments improve, the change may still be worthwhile.

GPU usage is high and the image is already soft
Do not immediately lower every quality option. First test a less noticeable effects or distant-detail option. If the game offers an internal resolution scale or anti-aliasing alternative, compare it in motion. Only move to a lower output resolution when those options do not provide enough headroom.
CPU activity is high while GPU activity is not
Focus on options that affect simulation or the number of objects the game processes, if the title exposes them. A lower texture setting is unlikely to fix a CPU limit. Test crowd, foliage, view-distance or physics-related controls only when the game provides them, and validate in the same busy scene.
Memory pressure appears during traversal
Test texture, asset-streaming or related memory options and repeat a route that loads new environments. Keep higher texture quality if the monitor remains comfortable and the hitch does not return; otherwise accept the smallest texture reduction that removes the interruption.

Undo the last HDR, brightness, color-temperature or RGB-range change and compare again. Check the display’s input configuration and the game’s own HDR calibration. A picture mismatch is separate from a frame-rate bottleneck, so solve it without lowering game detail unless the monitor also shows a rendering limit.
External-display problems are a separate branch
If performance seems normal on the built-in or primary display but an external screen has an image or mode problem, treat it as a display-connection issue first. Steam’s docking guidance for external-display problems includes trying an in-game adjustment or changing the cable or display input, depending on the scenario.
This conditional troubleshooting advice does not establish that a premium cable, adapter or dock increases Steam Machine frame rates. Change the cable or input when the symptom is a missing signal, incorrect mode, flicker or compatibility problem—not as a general graphics-performance upgrade.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you updated SteamOS and restarted before comparing settings?
- Did you record the original resolution, preset and custom options?
- Did you test the same demanding scene each time?
- Did you check frame-rate consistency instead of relying only on the average?
- Does the monitor point mainly to GPU, CPU or memory pressure?
- Did you change one game setting at a time?
- Did you preserve textures and other visible detail when they were not causing the bottleneck?
- Did you test lower resolution only after less visible adjustments?
- Are you treating HDR, brightness, color temperature and RGB range as image controls rather than performance controls?
- If an external display is involved, are you troubleshooting its connection separately from game rendering?
What a good final configuration looks like
A successful configuration is not necessarily the lowest preset or the highest displayed average. It is the combination that remains consistent in the scenes you actually play, keeps important detail readable and avoids a compromise you notice constantly. Save the final per-game settings, including resolution, so a later update or display change can be compared against a known configuration.
Because Steam provides no quantified, universal setting recipe for an unspecified title, keep your conclusion game-specific: measure the bottleneck, make the smallest relevant change, and retain higher-quality options everywhere the monitor shows headroom.
