When Steam downloads slow down during busy hours, first check that you are comparing the same speed units, then test Steam’s download region and reduce competition for your home connection. If those do not explain the slowdown, check Wi-Fi, your PC or Steam Deck’s installation activity, and whether the problem appears only at certain times.
Check what Steam’s speed number means
Internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second, while Steam may show downloads in bytes per second. One byte equals eight bits, so the displayed numbers can look very different even when they describe the same rate. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6144 Kb/s = 6 megabits per second; it is a unit conversion, not a benchmark or expected download speed. See Steam’s slow-download and content-server guidance.
Do not use the speed shown in your system tray or network connection properties as your internet speed. Steam explains that this typically describes the connection between your device and local network, not actual internet throughput. Compare Steam’s rate with your plan or a current internet speed test, making sure the units match.

Test Steam’s download region
Steam selects content servers based on your location, but the regional server may be slow or overloaded. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and check Download Region. Start with your home region or the closest one, then test a few nearby alternatives.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Compare regions under similar conditions—for example, one after another while other household internet use remains steady. A distant region is not automatically faster, and changing regions is a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed fix. Steam recommends trying a different nearby region when its servers are unavailable or too busy; see its server availability guidance.
Reduce competition for your household connection
Set a bandwidth limit when others need capacity
In Steam > Settings > Downloads, set a download bandwidth limit if Steam is crowding out video calls, streaming, or other household activity. This does not increase Steam’s maximum speed; it reserves some capacity for other uses. Check the client’s selected units before choosing a limit so you do not confuse bytes with bits. Steam describes the available client-rate controls in Setting Client Rates.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Move automatic updates to a quieter time
If Steam updates repeatedly coincide with busy household hours, use the downloads settings to schedule automatic updates for a quieter window. The Download Manager also lets you reorder queued downloads and updates. Steam’s instructions for managing these options are in Managing Steam Downloads & Updates.
Separate Wi-Fi problems from internet congestion
A busy or interference-prone wireless connection can slow downloads even when your internet plan has spare capacity. Steam’s network guidance for Steam Deck recommends testing available Wi-Fi bands—6 GHz, 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz—and trying a less congested router channel. The best option depends on your router, device, distance, and nearby networks.
Rank #3
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Where possible, test with a direct wired connection. On Steam Deck, a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter is needed for that test. A wired comparison helps identify trouble on the wireless link; it will not fix an overloaded Steam region or a saturated internet connection. If you change router settings, follow the router manufacturer’s instructions and revert changes that do not help. See Steam’s network and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether installation work is the bottleneck
Steam may be downloading and installing at the same time. CPU work, disk writes, and—on Steam Deck—SD card write speed can affect the installation process and total time. Steam notes that download rate may be throttled to match other installation tasks, so a low rate in the Download Manager does not by itself prove that your internet connection is slow.
Rank #4
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Watch whether the rate changes as the device unpacks, patches, or writes files. If installation activity is heavy, the device may be the limiting factor; buying faster storage is not a guaranteed improvement when the actual bottleneck is the network. Steam covers these considerations in its Steam hardware network troubleshooting.
Fix client problems and check when the slowdown happens
Restart Steam, then clear its download cache if needed
If downloads or installations behave inconsistently, restart Steam and your computer. If the problem continues, clearing the download cache can address client-side download issues. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose the option to clear the download cache. Steam says this removes locally cached configuration data, does not affect installed games, and requires you to sign in again. It is a troubleshooting step, not a way to boost a healthy connection’s throughput. Follow Steam’s instructions for clearing the download cache.

Also check whether security, monitoring, or other software is modifying or inspecting disk or network activity; Steam lists such software among possible causes of download or installation trouble. Its broader update and installation troubleshooting covers these checks.
Compare busy and quiet hours
If Steam slows consistently at particular times, test again at another time of day. A recurring time-based pattern may point to household contention or ISP traffic shaping; Steam says ISP blocking or shaping is possible and recommends contacting your provider if you suspect it. Check Steam’s network connectivity guidance for that possibility.
If multiple Steam services are failing or timing out, check Steam’s network status before changing your home setup. A wider service issue can look like a local speed problem; Steam includes status guidance in its server availability troubleshooting.
