The fastest improvements are usually physical, not electronic: confirm each earbud is on the correct ear, aim its speaker outlet toward the ear canal, secure the clip, and keep the microphone aimed toward your mouth. Then clean the speaker and microphone openings, verify call routing, and adjust the supported equalizer. Open-style earbuds cannot create the bass, isolation, or privacy of a sealed in-ear design, but careful positioning and realistic settings can make a substantial difference.
The exact procedure depends on the model. The fit guidance below uses manufacturer instructions for several products as examples; an ear grip, microphone location, cleaning method, or app control documented for one model should not be assumed to apply to another.
What open-style clip-on earbuds can—and cannot—do
Clip-on earbuds suspend a speaker near the ear rather than sealing the ear canal with an eartip. That makes them comfortable for many people and lets you hear traffic, conversations, and other surroundings. The same construction also explains the common complaints: bass can sound lighter, outside noise remains audible, and someone nearby may hear part of your playback.
Moving the outlet closer to the canal and choosing a suitable equalizer profile can improve clarity and perceived bass. Neither change creates a seal. If you need strong isolation or private listening in a quiet room, an open design has a physical limitation rather than a setting that can be fixed.

Soundcore Support summarizes the importance of fit in its AeroClip guidance: “Proper wearing enhances comfort and audio performance, so it’s important to wear the earbuds correctly.” Treat that as a practical starting point for any clip-on design, while following the instructions for your own model.
Sound leakage is also a normal consequence of the open construction. Soundcore advises keeping volume at 50% or lower in quiet environments to reduce what nearby people hear. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation for its open-ear products, not a universal safe-listening threshold; use the lowest level that lets you hear clearly and take listening breaks.
Improve music and video sound in the right order
Use a familiar recording, spoken podcast, or video while making one change at a time. Moderate volume makes it easier to hear tonal changes and prevents a louder setting from disguising a poor fit.
1. Confirm left and right orientation
- Remove both earbuds and find the L and R markings or the model’s orientation indicators.
- Put each side on the matching ear. A reversed clip can place the speaker and microphone behind the ear or point them away from the canal.
- Start the familiar audio at a moderate level before making adjustments.
Do not judge the sound until each side is on the correct ear. If only one channel sounds weak, orientation is one of the first things to check.
2. Aim the speaker outlet toward the canal
Open earbuds are position-sensitive because a small change in angle changes how much sound reaches the ear. Shift or rotate each clip while the audio plays, stopping when the speaker opening faces the entrance of the ear canal without pressing painfully on the ear.
For AeroClip, soundcore says to put the speaker toward the front of the ear—not the battery compartment—and to clip at the thinnest part of the outer ear. Its instructions recommend trying different positions while listening (soundcore AeroClip fit guidance). Huawei gives a similar instruction for FreeClip: make the acoustic balls fit the auricle and face the outlets toward the canals (Huawei call and fit guidance).

Use the same principle on another model, but do not assume its speaker is located in the same housing. The visible side, charging contact, and battery enclosure are not reliable substitutes for the product’s own diagram.
3. Secure a loose clip with the correct accessory
A clip that moves when you walk will repeatedly change the acoustic angle. Re-seat it before increasing volume. If the model supplies stabilizers, use only parts made for that exact model.
Soundcore includes M and L ear grips with AeroClip for users who need a more secure fit. They are model-specific; the documentation does not establish that they fit competing earbuds or that replacement grips are sold separately. Do not improvise with adhesive, tape, or a third-party part that could block the speaker or microphone.
4. Check the speaker mesh
If output has gradually become quiet, muffled, or uneven, inspect the speaker mesh under good light. Skin oils, dust, and pocket lint can obstruct an opening even when the earbud appears clean.
Follow the exact care procedure in your manual. Soundcore’s AeroClip instructions say to check the mesh every three months or whenever volume drops and describe a soft-brush method, along with other model-specific cleaning approaches (AeroClip cleaning instructions). Other products may prohibit liquids, solvents, compressed air, or adhesive cleaning tools. Unless your manual explicitly permits them, keep those away from the mesh and do not push a sharp object into it.
5. Adjust the equalizer after the fit is right
EQ changes the balance of frequencies; it cannot compensate for an outlet that is pointing away from your ear or restore the isolation of a sealed earbud. Start with the manufacturer’s default profile, then make small changes and listen to familiar tracks.

- For thin or light bass, try a modest low-frequency increase after confirming the outlet is close to the canal.
- For harsh speech or cymbals, reduce treble slightly rather than raising overall volume.
- For muddy vocals, reduce excess low-mid energy and recheck the clip position.
- Save a profile for quiet rooms and another for noisy areas if the app supports multiple presets.
AeroClip’s app lists six sound effects, including its default Signature sound, and a custom EQ. JBL’s Soundgear Clips specification lists six presets and a customizable 10-band equalizer (soundcore feature guidance; JBL Soundgear Clips specification sheet). Those are feature descriptions, not independent measurements of sound quality.
6. Control volume and the environment
In a quiet room, lower the volume first. Raising it to overcome a poor angle increases leakage and can make the sound seem more aggressive without improving detail. In a busy place, move to a quieter position when possible instead of continually increasing the level.
If people nearby can hear your program, bring the outlets closer to the canals and lower the volume. Open-ear leakage may remain even after a good adjustment; it is not proof that the earbuds are defective.

Improve microphone and call quality
1. Verify the call is using the earbuds
Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that a phone or meeting app selected the earbuds as its call device. During a call, open the audio-output or speaker menu and select the connected earbuds. If they are absent, disconnect and reconnect them in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then reselect them in the call app.
Huawei specifically notes that a phone can remain selected as the calling device after the earbuds connect and advises changing the audio device on the call screen or reconnecting through Bluetooth (Huawei support).
2. Aim the microphone toward your mouth
Identify the microphone opening from the model’s diagram and rotate the clip so it faces the mouth as much as the construction allows. A loose fit can move the microphone away from your voice. Huawei recommends adjusting the earbuds during a call if pickup is weak. Raycon’s open-ear manual tells users to face its microphone port toward the mouth side (Raycon open-ear manual).

That direction is model guidance, not a universal rule: some earbuds place microphones on the front, top, or underside of the housing. Do not cover an opening with a finger, hair, hat, or an ear grip.

3. Test in a quiet location
Make a short test call before changing advanced settings. Wind and nearby voices can overwhelm a small microphone, and open earbuds lack the passive isolation that a sealed earbud provides. Huawei cautions that strong wind and high noise reduce call quality and that a helmet or mask can interfere with pickup (Huawei support). Raycon likewise recommends a quieter environment and notes that open earbuds pick up more ambient sound because they do not block it passively (Raycon manual).
For outdoor calls, turn your body or a shoulder away from the wind, pause near a wall or sheltered doorway, and avoid placing a helmet strap or mask edge over the microphone. These are environmental changes, not replacements for the model’s noise-processing features.
4. Clean the microphone opening carefully
A blocked microphone port or mesh can make your voice faint or muffled. Inspect it under good light and clean only as the manual directs. Huawei identifies a blocked microphone or mesh as a possible cause of poor call quality (Huawei support).
Use a gentle, model-approved method. Do not poke a sharp pin into a microphone port unless the product instructions explicitly permit it; the opening may lead directly to a delicate microphone.

- In the same room and calling app, call a cooperative person or record a short voice message with both earbuds connected.
- Repeat with only the left earbud, then only the right, if the product supports single-ear use.
- Repeat using the phone’s built-in microphone while standing in the same position.
- Ask the listener which sample is clearer and note whether wind, clothing, or one side changes the result.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Most useful checks | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Music is quiet on both sides | Confirm orientation; move both outlets toward the canals; inspect and clean the speaker mesh; check the phone’s volume and EQ. | If output returns after repositioning, fit was the main variable. If it remains muffled, follow the model’s service guidance after cleaning. |
| One side is much quieter | Swap attention between left and right, verify L/R labels, reseat the quiet side, and inspect its mesh. | A channel or fit problem is more likely than an open-ear limitation that affects both sides equally. |
| Bass is weak but speech is clear | Move the outlets closer to the canals and try a modest low-frequency EQ change. | Some bass reduction is inherent to the unsealed design; EQ cannot create an acoustic seal. |
| Nearby people hear the program | Lower volume, bring the outlets closer, and move to a quieter setting. | Some leakage is normal for open earbuds and may not be fully removable. |
| The other caller hears a faint voice | Check call routing, aim microphones toward the mouth, remove wind or a mask obstruction, and clean the mic opening. | If the phone microphone works in the same place but both earbuds do not, inspect the earbuds’ settings and model support. |
| Voice sounds acceptable indoors but poor outside | Repeat the call away from wind; shield the microphones; check whether a helmet or mask covers them. | Ambient noise or airflow is probably overwhelming the open-ear microphones. |
| Quality changed after months of use | Inspect speaker and microphone meshes, clean according to the manual, and check whether the clip has loosened. | Debris or changed positioning can reduce performance without an electronic failure. |
Use model documentation instead of assuming features
Clip-on earbuds that look similar can expose very different controls. Before changing hardware, check the product’s support page or manual for the exact app name, EQ controls, microphone layout, fit parts, and cleaning restrictions.
| Documented example | Fit or sound controls | Call-related information | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| soundcore AeroClip | Speaker positioned toward the front; reposition while audio plays; M and L ear grips included; six sound effects and custom EQ. | Follow the model’s mesh-care and fit instructions. | Use its documented placement and included grips only for AeroClip; do not generalize them to another clip-on. |
| JBL Soundgear Clips | Six EQ presets and a customizable 10-band equalizer. | Its specification sheet describes selectable use of one or both beamforming microphones per earbud through the app. | Confirm that the app exposes the control on your regional model and firmware; the feature statement is not a comparative call test. |
| Huawei FreeClip guidance | Fit the acoustic balls to the auricles and face outlets toward the canals. | Check call-device selection, microphone direction, wind, masks, helmets, and blocked openings. | Apply these instructions to FreeClip as documented, not automatically to another brand’s housing. |
| Raycon open-ear manual | Follow the manual’s orientation and fit diagrams. | Face the microphone port toward the mouth side and use a quieter environment because there is no passive isolation. | Use the port direction only when your model has the same documented layout. |
Manufacturer specifications tell you what a product is designed to offer; they do not establish that one model sounds or calls better than another in every ear. No objective “best” clip-on follows from these feature lists.
When replacing or comparing a model makes sense
Consider another model only after you have ruled out orientation, fit, debris, routing, and environment. Compare the things that directly affect your use rather than relying on a generic microphone or bass claim.
- Fit and stabilizers: Check whether the package includes model-specific grips or other retention parts, and whether the clip can stay in position during walking.
- Speaker direction: Look for a housing that lets you aim the outlet toward the canal without forcing the ear into an uncomfortable angle.
- EQ controls: Confirm the companion app’s actual presets and whether it provides custom bands. “EQ support” alone does not reveal how much control you get.
- Microphone system: Count the microphones only from the official specification and check whether beamforming, per-ear selection, or other controls are available.
- Support documentation: Prefer a manual that clearly explains call routing, microphone orientation, cleaning, and fit adjustments.
Use the documentation for the exact regional edition and firmware where possible. App labels and available controls can change, so a feature listed on a specification sheet may not appear identically on every phone or software version.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Weekly or whenever sound changes: Inspect both speaker meshes, microphone openings, clips, and grips under good light.
- Before an important call: Confirm Bluetooth call routing, make a brief test recording, and check that a mask, helmet, hat, hair, or wind is not covering the microphones.
- Every three months for AeroClip: Soundcore says to check its mesh on that schedule, or sooner if volume drops. Other models may specify a different interval, so follow their manuals.
- After cleaning: Let the earbuds be fully dry if the manufacturer permits any damp method, then test at moderate volume before returning to normal use.
Do not use a liquid, solvent, adhesive, compressed air blast, or sharp tool unless the exact product instructions authorize it. A cleaning method that is safe for one model can damage another.
The practical decision
Start with the reversible sequence: correct the L/R orientation, aim each outlet toward the canal, secure the clip with only its supplied fit parts, inspect and clean the speaker mesh, then adjust EQ and volume. For calls, confirm the selected audio device, aim the microphones toward your mouth, remove wind and obstructions, and clean the microphone openings according to the manual. If those steps do not resolve the problem, compare the earbuds with the phone microphone in the same environment and consult the exact model’s support documentation. Persistent limitations such as lighter bass, audible surroundings, and some leakage are inherent to the open-style design rather than defects.
