You can usually extend a smartwatch’s time between charges without giving up the alerts, health measurements, or workout tracking you actually use. Start by removing unnecessary screen wakeups and app notifications, then reduce display and background activity. Keep Bluetooth and other connections available when they are useful, and reserve full Battery Saver or Power Saving modes for emergencies because they can delay notifications, stop sensors, or disconnect radios.

There is no honest, universal promise of a certain number of extra hours: battery capacity, software version, signal strength, watch face, sensors, and usage differ by model. Use the sequence below, checking the effect after each change.

Start with the changes least likely to remove an essential feature

Battery use is a trade-off among convenience, connectivity, display activity, and measurement detail. Make one reversible change at a time so you know which setting helped and what it disabled.

Change What it saves What you give up Best use
Curate notifications Fewer vibration, display and wireless wakeups Alerts from apps you exclude Everyday use
Stop automatic screen wake for notifications Display power and repeated wake cycles Seeing an alert immediately without raising the watch When you need alerts but not a lit screen for each one
Turn off Always On Display Continuous display power The time is not continuously visible Daily use when a wrist raise or tap is acceptable
Shorten screen and wrist-raise timeouts Unnecessary display-on seconds Less time to read without another gesture Daily use
Reduce background refresh Periodic app work and data transfers Some complications or apps update less often When only a few live data tiles matter
Reduce GPS or heart-rate sampling during long workouts Sensor and location power Less detailed tracks and estimates Long hikes, runs or walks
Battery Saver or Power Saving Multiple systems at once Potentially delayed alerts, disabled sensors, location and radios Low-battery or unusually long days

Keep your watch’s battery-usage screen open while testing. If the model provides a list of apps or functions, record whether the drain occurs while idle, during a workout, in poor cellular coverage, or after an update.

1. Stop avoidable notification wakeups

A notification can use power in several ways: the watch receives data, vibrates, lights the display and may maintain a wireless exchange. Keeping every phone notification on the wrist therefore wastes more than the vibration alone.

Keep only alerts that require immediate attention

  1. Open the watch’s notification settings or the companion phone app.
  2. Review the per-app list rather than using an all-or-nothing switch.
  3. Keep calls, messages, calendar reminders, authentication codes and safety alerts that you genuinely need.
  4. Disable shopping, social, promotional, game and duplicate alerts that can wait for the phone.
  5. Send yourself a test alert from each retained app and confirm that it still arrives.

Samsung’s guidance specifically supports choosing which apps can notify a Galaxy Watch. Names and locations vary by model, but the control is commonly under the companion app’s watch settings and Notifications, followed by App notifications.

Keep notifications but prevent every alert from lighting the screen

Many watches separate notification delivery from automatic screen wake. Leave vibration or a silent banner enabled, but disable “wake screen,” “turn on display,” or an equivalent option for incoming notifications. You can then raise the watch or tap it when the alert matters. If your model does not offer this split, use a shorter vibration or notification preview instead of disabling the notification entirely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check duplicated phone and watch alerts

If a phone and watch both make sound or vibrate for the same low-priority event, silence the watch copy. Keep the watch channel for alerts you may miss when the phone is in a bag, and leave the phone as the full notification archive.

2. Reduce display power before disabling health features

The display is one of the safest places to save power because changing it does not inherently stop heart-rate, sleep or workout recording.

Turn off Always On Display when continuous visibility is not essential

Always On Display keeps a clock or simplified face visible continuously. Apple documents turning off Always On separately from Low Power Mode; Samsung notes that Always On Display uses battery continuously on Galaxy Watch. With it off, the display activates when you raise your wrist, tap the screen or press a button, depending on the watch.

On Apple Watch, look under Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On, or use the corresponding setting in the Watch app. On Galaxy Watch, look under the display settings for Always On Display. Wear OS and other platforms use similar wording, but the exact path depends on the manufacturer and software version.

Shorten wrist-raise and screen timeout behavior

If you keep wrist raise enabled, reduce how long the screen remains lit after the gesture. Avoid repeated exaggerated wrist movements, which can trigger wakeups while you work or exercise. A tap or button press may be a better compromise if automatic raising regularly activates the display by mistake.

Lower brightness only as far as readability allows

Use the lowest brightness that remains legible in your normal lighting. A very dim setting can cause repeated wakeups or longer viewing time as you struggle to read, cancelling the saving. Outdoor workouts may require a brighter setting temporarily; change it back afterward rather than leaving maximum brightness enabled all day.

3. Keep connectivity efficient instead of switching everything off

Wireless settings are situational. Disconnecting Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or cellular service can save radio power in one circumstance but break calls, syncing, location assistance or remote features in another.

Prefer the paired phone over a distant cellular connection

Apple recommends keeping Apple Watch near its paired iPhone when practical. A Bluetooth connection to the phone is generally more efficient for the watch than using mobile data. Do not turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone as a generic battery tip: Apple says that can increase Apple Watch drain.

Use Wi-Fi when the phone is away and coverage is good

When an Apple Watch is away from its iPhone, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks. On any platform, a stable known network is preferable to repeatedly searching for networks. Samsung warns that searching for nearby Wi-Fi or maintaining a weak connection can consume significant power.

Avoid weak cellular or Wi-Fi coverage

A watch working hard to maintain a marginal signal can use more power than one connected to a strong network. If you are in a basement, rural area or building with poor coverage, use airplane mode only if you do not need calls, messages, location assistance or syncing. Otherwise, move to a stronger-signal area or let the watch reconnect later.

Understand what a radio switch breaks

  • Turning off Bluetooth can stop phone pairing, call routing and synchronized notifications.
  • Turning off Wi-Fi can prevent network access when the phone is out of range.
  • Turning off mobile service can disable standalone calls, messages and data on cellular models.
  • Turning off location can affect navigation, route recording and location-based features.

Use these switches for a known period, such as a flight or a night in a poor-coverage location, not as a blanket daily prescription.

4. Preserve essential health tracking while reducing expensive sampling

Continuous sensors and GPS can dominate battery use during long workouts. Decide which data you need before reducing them: a route map, pace, heart-rate zones, elevation, calories and emergency location do not all have identical requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use reduced GPS and heart-rate readings for long outdoor workouts

On supported Apple Watch models running watchOS 9.1 or later, Low Power Mode can use fewer GPS and heart-rate readings during specified outdoor walking, running and hiking workouts. This can lengthen a long session, but the route and heart-rate record will be less detailed. Check the workout settings on your exact model before relying on it for training analysis or safety.

Consider a Bluetooth chest strap when the optical sensor is the problem

Apple describes turning off the optical heart-rate sensor for longer running or walking workouts and using a Bluetooth chest strap instead. With the optical sensor disabled, calorie-burn calculations may be less accurate. A chest strap can preserve heart-rate data while avoiding some wrist-sensor activity, but it adds another device that must be charged and paired.

Disable only measurements you do not use

If you never review blood-oxygen readings, continuous stress measurements or automatic workout detection, check whether your watch lets you reduce those features individually. Do not disable fall detection, irregular-rhythm warnings, medication reminders or emergency functions merely to chase battery time if you rely on them. The menu label and available controls vary by model.

Use a workout-specific profile

Create a repeatable long-workout routine: start with normal health tracking, enable the platform’s reduced-sampling or workout power-saving option, and restore normal settings after the session. Verify that the watch still records the route, elapsed time and the measurements you consider essential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Limit background work without breaking useful complications

Apps can refresh in the background even when you are not opening them. On Apple Watch, Apple allows Background App Refresh to be disabled for all apps or selected apps. Complications on the current watch face continue to refresh, so removing unused apps from the face can reduce background demand as well as visual clutter.

  1. List the complications and tiles you actually check.
  2. Remove live tiles that you never use, especially those that update frequently.
  3. In the companion app or watch settings, disable background refresh for nonessential apps.
  4. Leave refresh enabled for the weather, calendar or other complication that you depend on.
  5. Open a retained app manually after changing the setting and confirm that its data still updates when expected.

Do not confuse background refresh with notifications. An app may still deliver an important push alert while its background refresh is limited, but behavior differs by platform; test the specific alert rather than assuming.

6. Use full saver modes as contingency tools

Battery Saver and Power Saving modes bundle several aggressive changes. They are useful when reaching a charger matters more than a complete feature set, but they are poor substitutes for the small daily adjustments above.

Platform Typical effects documented by the manufacturer Potentially lost essentials
Apple Watch Low Power Mode Turns off Always On; limits background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements; may delay notifications; limits some cellular and Wi-Fi connections; changes certain workout sampling options Timely notifications, emergency alerts, continuous health measurements and detailed workout data may be affected
Samsung Galaxy Watch Power Saving Lowers brightness, limits background functions and wireless connections, reduces wrist-raise wake, uses a grayscale home screen, turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data, and limits performance Only specified calls, messages and Bluetooth notifications remain; network-dependent features can stop
Wear OS Battery Saver May stop notifications, disable vibration, location and most background data, turn off Always On, and disconnect Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile networks Notifications, navigation, phone connection and network features may be unavailable; behavior varies by watch

Apple Watch: activate only after checking the feature list

Apple’s Low Power Mode is available from the watch’s Battery settings and can also be managed through the Watch app. Read the confirmation screen because it identifies functions that will be limited. For a single long workout, use the workout-specific low-power option where supported rather than leaving every reduction active afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Galaxy Watch: treat Power Saving as an emergency profile

Samsung describes Power Saving as a mode that changes the home screen to grayscale, limits performance and wireless functions, and preserves only specified calls, messages and Bluetooth notifications. Before enabling it, decide whether you still need Wi-Fi, mobile data, wrist-raise wake or non-Bluetooth alerts. Restore normal mode when you can charge.

Wear OS: set automatic activation carefully

Google’s Wear OS help supports Battery Saver and, on supported watches, automatic activation at a low-battery threshold. The threshold and behavior vary by watch. If automatic activation would suppress a work or safety notification, choose a lower threshold or leave automation off and enable the mode manually when you have reviewed the consequences.

7. Platform-specific adjustments

Apple Watch

  • Use Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On to remove continuous display power without enabling Low Power Mode.
  • Review Settings > Battery for Low Power Mode and the watch’s battery condition information.
  • In the Watch app, open My Watch > General > Background App Refresh and disable only apps you do not need to update.
  • Keep the watch near the iPhone when possible; prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data when away from the phone and use a strong signal.
  • For supported outdoor workouts on watchOS 9.1 or later, check the workout power-saving option before accepting reduced GPS and heart-rate sampling.
  • Be aware that speaker audio can drain newer Apple Watch models faster than listening through Bluetooth headphones.

After an Apple software update, background tasks can temporarily increase drain for a few days. Judge the battery after that settling period rather than changing every setting immediately.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

  • In the display settings, turn off Always On Display or shorten the screen timeout.
  • In the Galaxy Wearable app, open watch notification settings and keep only important app alerts.
  • Disable automatic notification details or screen wake if your model offers those controls.
  • Check Wi-Fi and mobile-network settings when the watch is searching continuously or holding a weak signal.
  • Use Power Saving only after checking which calls, messages, notifications and wireless features remain.

Samsung’s support guidance was updated September 30, 2026. Menu names can differ by Galaxy Watch generation, One UI Watch version and region, so use the model’s current on-screen labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wear OS

Open the watch’s battery settings and choose Battery Saver. On supported models, look for an automatic low-battery trigger. Confirm whether your watch will continue notifications, vibration, location and phone connections; Google notes that these details vary by model.

Garmin

A Forerunner 570 owner-manual search result recommends stopping Always On display timeout, choosing a shorter timeout, limiting phone notifications and turning off wrist-based heart-rate monitoring. Garmin’s exact settings and the effect on recorded data depend on the model. Verify the instructions in your watch’s current manual before disabling wrist heart rate, especially if you use it for training or safety.

8. A diagnostic sequence for sudden or persistent drain

  1. Check usage first. Open the watch’s battery or battery-usage screen, if available. Note the time and activity when the percentage falls fastest.
  2. Separate normal high-use periods. A long GPS workout, speaker playback, navigation, cellular calling or poor coverage can explain a temporary drop.
  3. Inspect notifications. Remove unnecessary app alerts and stop automatic screen wake for retained alerts.
  4. Inspect display behavior. Turn off Always On or shorten timeouts, then observe idle drain.
  5. Inspect connections. Keep Apple Watch near its iPhone where practical, prefer a stable Wi-Fi connection away from the phone, and avoid weak networks. Do not disable the iPhone’s Bluetooth as a test.
  6. Review background and sensor settings. Disable refresh or continuous measurements only where you understand the data that will no longer update.
  7. Use saver mode once, deliberately. If the watch lasts normally in a restricted mode, a display, radio, app or sensor setting is a likely contributor; restore features one at a time to identify it.
  8. Allow time after updates. Apple says update-related background work can affect battery life for a few days. Recheck after that period.
  9. Check battery health. On Apple Watch, open Battery Health and review Maximum Capacity. A degraded battery or a service indication is a hardware condition, not a setting that can be fixed by disabling notifications.
  10. Use model-specific service guidance. If the watch remains unusually hot, loses charge while idle, shuts down unexpectedly or shows a service warning, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for that exact model.

9. Practical profiles you can reuse

Normal workday

  • Keep calls, messages, calendar and authentication alerts.
  • Disable promotional and social-app alerts on the watch.
  • Turn off notification-driven screen wake.
  • Use a readable, moderate brightness and disable Always On if you can accept a wrist raise.
  • Keep Bluetooth paired to the phone.

Long outdoor workout

  • Charge before starting and use a strong-signal route where possible.
  • Enable the platform’s reduced GPS or heart-rate sampling only if less detail is acceptable.
  • Use a Bluetooth chest strap when supported and when preserving heart-rate data matters more than optical sensing; check the effect on calorie estimates.
  • Keep emergency and location features that you rely on.
  • Restore normal sampling after the workout.

Low battery before a long day

  • First remove nonessential notifications and screen wakeups.
  • Turn off Always On and unnecessary background refresh.
  • Keep the connection required for calls, messages or safety alerts.
  • Enable Low Power Mode, Power Saving or Battery Saver only after confirming which essential features will be suppressed.

What not to do

  • Do not promise yourself a fixed percentage or number of extra hours; no cross-brand test establishes a universal result.
  • Do not turn off all connectivity automatically. Radio use depends on signal quality and whether the paired phone is nearby.
  • Do not disable health or emergency functions blindly to save power.
  • Do not assume a degraded battery is a software-settings problem.
  • Do not judge a post-update battery change immediately; allow the platform’s background work to settle.
