For smoother skate. gameplay on PC, first confirm that your hardware meets the Steam minimum or recommended tier and that you have a supported controller. If the game lags, EA’s documented remedy is to lower Global Graphics Quality or switch to Custom, then reduce Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality, and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low. Change one setting at a time and judge smoothness and image quality on your own system; EA publishes no FPS gain for any individual change.
What to change first when skate. runs poorly
Use this order so that you can identify what actually helped:
- Check the PC tier. Compare your processor, graphics card, video memory, system RAM, operating system, DirectX version, internet connection and free storage with the Steam lists below.
- Confirm controller support. During PC Early Access, EA says keyboard and mouse are unsupported, so a compatible controller is required to play.
- Start with Global Graphics Quality. Lower it, or select Custom if you want to reduce individual options.
- Lower the three settings EA names for struggling PCs. Set Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low.
- Test one change at a time. Play the same type of session after each adjustment, then keep the lowest change that gives acceptable smoothness without making the image distracting.
These steps are troubleshooting guidance, not a promise of a particular frame-rate increase. No published source provides FPS results by graphics card or a measured percentage gain from lowering a specific setting.
Check whether your PC meets skate.’s requirements
Steam lists separate minimum and recommended configurations for skate. The figures are store requirements, not a guarantee of a particular FPS, resolution or preset. They apply to the PC release identified by Steam as September 16, 2025, and the game remains in Early Access, so requirements can change with later builds.

How to interpret the two tiers
The minimum tier is a compatibility floor. A PC that only just reaches it may need lower settings, and meeting it does not establish a target such as 30 or 60 FPS. The recommended tier has a faster processor class, twice the system memory and substantially newer graphics hardware, but Steam still does not attach a guaranteed frame rate or resolution to it.
Compare the whole configuration rather than just the GPU model. A system with a recommended graphics card but an older processor, 8 GB of RAM or insufficient free space does not match the recommended specification as a complete system.
Platform and controller requirements
EA’s PC Early Access guidance says a controller is needed because keyboard and mouse are unsupported. Examples of supported controller families in that guidance are:

- PlayStation 5 DualSense
- Xbox One controllers
- Xbox Series X|S controllers
- DualSense Edge
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller V1 and V2
The phrase “Xbox Wireless Controller for PC” is a useful category search when you do not already own a controller, but it is not an endorsement of a particular retail SKU. Check the exact model, firmware and wired or wireless connection method against the game’s current compatibility information before buying.
EA’s September 2025 guidance also lists macOS and Linux as unsupported. Steam Native support does not make Steam Deck supported; EA specifically says Steam Deck is unsupported. Because these statements were published for an Early Access build, check the current support page and game notes if you are playing after a major update.
Set up a clean performance baseline
Before changing several options, record what happens in a repeatable situation. For example, use the same district, travel route or trick session and note whether the problem is a continuously low frame rate, brief stutter, delayed control response or a connection-related interruption. This prevents you from mistaking a network symptom for a graphics problem.
Separate rendering problems from online problems
- Rendering slowdown: the camera and animation become visibly uneven while local movement continues to respond normally. Graphics settings are the appropriate first test.
- Input or control issue: the character reacts late, buttons do not register or the controller disconnects. Verify the controller and its connection before lowering image quality.
- Online interruption: other players or networked activity freeze while the local camera may remain smooth. Lowering shadows or ambient occlusion cannot fix a broadband or service interruption.
Do not use controller-assist options as a performance test. EA describes those options as choices that change control feel and challenge, not as graphics optimizations.

EA recommends lowering Global Graphics Quality when a PC is struggling. This is the quickest way to move away from the highest-cost combination of visual settings without having to guess which option is responsible.
When to choose a lower preset
Choose a lower Global Graphics Quality level when you want a simple, broad reduction and are willing to accept the preset’s complete visual trade-off. This is useful when the game is consistently too demanding and you do not yet know which individual setting matters most.

When to choose Custom
Select Custom when you want to preserve more of the image while targeting the options that EA identifies specifically. After selecting Custom, lower Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low, then test the same gameplay situation again.
EA states that Ultra provides the best-looking experience. Ultra is therefore an image-quality choice, not a performance recommendation. If your system is already smooth at Ultra and you prefer maximum visual quality, there is no need to lower it solely because a lower preset exists.
Adjust the settings EA identifies for lag
Lighting Quality
Lighting Quality affects the way scenes are illuminated. EA includes it among the first options to lower on a struggling PC. Set it to Low in a Custom configuration, then play long enough to see whether movement remains smoother and whether the lighting change is acceptable to you.
Shadow Quality
Shadow Quality controls the detail and presentation of shadows. Lowering it to Low is part of EA’s documented lag advice. If the result looks too flat, you can raise it one level after testing the other named options rather than returning every setting to Ultra at once.
Ambient Occlusion Quality
Ambient Occlusion Quality affects contact shading around surfaces and objects. EA specifically recommends Low for a PC that is struggling. Test it independently so you can tell whether the visual reduction is worthwhile on your hardware.
Why you should change only one option at a time
Changing all three options together may produce a different image and make it impossible to know which adjustment helped. A practical sequence is to lower Lighting Quality, test; restore it if the change is not useful; then test Shadow Quality; then test Ambient Occlusion Quality. This procedure is a controlled troubleshooting habit, not an EA benchmark protocol, and it produces no guaranteed percentage improvement.
Upscaling: what is known and what must be checked
EA’s PC requirements article from September 12, 2025 says the initial in-game support included FSR and XeSS, with more DLSS support planned. That is a dated description of an Early Access build. It does not verify which technologies, modes or quality levels are available in the current version.
Open the current graphics menu and the latest update notes before selecting an upscaler. If FSR or XeSS appears in your build, compare its available quality modes on your own display and hardware. Do not assume that DLSS is present merely because the graphics card can support it, and do not describe a current DLSS option unless the game presently shows one or the developer confirms it.
Upscaling can alter image clarity as well as rendering workload, so judge both motion smoothness and readable detail. Keep a note of the mode you tested; Early Access updates can add, remove or rename options.

Choose controller and assist settings separately from graphics
EA says there is no single perfect skate. setup: settings should match personal preference and playstyle. Its control guidance describes three broad presets:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Preset | EA’s description | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlined | Suggested starting preset for beginners | You want a simpler introduction to the controls. |
| Classic | Similar to previous Skate games | You prefer a familiar control style. |
| Experienced | Offers the most control, with assistance settings automatically lowered | You want greater manual control and less assistance. |
These presets influence handling, assistance and challenge. They do not replace Global Graphics Quality, Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality or Ambient Occlusion Quality, and changing them should not be presented as a way to raise FPS.

If you are below the minimum specification
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and that DirectX 12 is available, as required by the Steam listing.
- Free at least the listed 25 GB of storage.
- Use a supported controller before diagnosing graphics performance.
- Start with Global Graphics Quality lowered or Custom selected.
- Set Lighting Quality, Shadow Quality and Ambient Occlusion Quality to Low.
- Test in the same area after each change. The published requirements do not promise that a below-minimum system will run acceptably.
If you meet the minimum specification but not the recommended tier
Use the minimum list as a compatibility reference, not a target-quality promise. Begin with a lower global preset or Custom and the three EA-named settings on Low. If the game becomes smooth enough, raise one option at a time until you find the balance you prefer.
If you meet the recommended specification
Try the higher visual preset, including Ultra, if image quality is your priority. If you still see lag, follow the same Custom workflow; the recommended tier does not guarantee a particular FPS, and Early Access builds can change performance.
If image quality is acceptable but motion is not
Keep the current resolution and controller preset while testing only the global, lighting, shadow and ambient-occlusion options. This isolates rendering load without changing the way the game feels to control.

If motion is smooth but the controls feel wrong
Leave graphics settings unchanged and select the control preset that matches your experience: Streamlined for a beginner, Classic for a previous Skate-like feel or Experienced for the most manual control. Treat assistance adjustments as gameplay choices.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Assuming recommended hardware equals a guaranteed frame rate. Steam publishes component tiers, not FPS, resolution or preset guarantees.
- Changing every option at once. You lose the ability to identify which adjustment affected smoothness or image quality.
- Calling controller settings performance settings. Presets and assists alter gameplay feel and challenge.
- Assuming a planned feature is currently available. EA’s FSR, XeSS and DLSS note is from September 2025; inspect the current build before making a present-tense claim.
- Trying to solve a connection interruption with graphics reductions. Lower visual quality cannot repair broadband or service problems.
- Buying a controller without checking the exact model. EA lists supported controller families, but a category name does not guarantee that every SKU or connection method is compatible.
- Expecting Steam Deck support because the game is listed as Steam Native. EA’s cited guidance says Steam Deck is unsupported.
How to decide whether an upgrade is necessary
Use the published tiers to identify the limiting category before spending money. If your system has 8 GB of RAM, it matches the minimum memory listing rather than the recommended 16 GB. If its graphics card is around the GTX 1050 Ti or RX 460 class, it is at the minimum GPU tier rather than the recommended RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT tier. The same comparison applies to the processor classes listed by Steam.
Do not infer an exact FPS gain from replacing one component: no measured hardware-by-hardware results are published in the available guidance. An upgrade decision should therefore be based on whether your complete configuration reaches the recommended tier and whether the current settings compromise your preferred experience, not on an invented performance percentage.
Version-sensitive details to recheck after updates
skate. is an Early Access game, so several details can change independently:
- Steam’s minimum and recommended requirements may be revised.
- Controller compatibility can expand or change.
- macOS, Linux or Steam Deck support could be updated from the September 2025 status.
- FSR, XeSS or DLSS options and their available modes may change.
- Graphics setting names or preset behavior may be adjusted.
Before republishing a settings guide or making a purchase, compare the current Steam listing, the latest EA support information and the options shown in your installed build. Keep the date attached to any requirement or upscaling statement so readers can distinguish current behavior from the September 2025 documentation.
Quick Recap
A concise decision path
