First find out whether the slowdown is on your Wi-Fi network, tied to your plan or provider, or caused by the terminal’s view of the sky, weather, or equipment. Test close to the router, pause other household internet use, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if your equipment allows it. Then check your provider account and alerts before buying hardware: a new router cannot fix an obstructed satellite view, a data-policy slowdown, or provider-side congestion.

Start by separating a Wi-Fi problem from a satellite-service problem

“Slow internet” can describe several different failures. A device may have a weak Wi-Fi connection to the router even while the satellite link is working normally. Several people or devices may be competing for the connection. Your plan may apply a data policy after an allowance is used, or service may be affected by congestion, an obstruction, severe weather, a cable, or a power problem. Those causes need different remedies.

Use a repeatable test rather than judging the connection from one video, download, or momentary interruption. Record the time, download and upload results, latency if the test provides it, which device you tested, and whether other people or devices were online. Run another test with household internet use paused and the device near the router. Viasat specifically recommends stopping other household use before a speed test and notes that evening peak periods can be slower. That guidance is specific to its service; your provider’s app, account, and support instructions are the authority for your equipment and plan. Viasat’s slow-speed troubleshooting guidance

If your equipment supports Ethernet, test a device by cable as well as over Wi-Fi. A wired test removes much of the local wireless path from the comparison, although the result still depends on the device, cable, ports, and test conditions. Do not assume a single speed test proves that the satellite connection is faulty: repeat the test under comparable conditions and look for a consistent difference.

What the comparison shows What to investigate next
Ethernet is consistently better than Wi-Fi near the router. Focus on router placement, wireless coverage, band selection, interference, and the affected device’s Wi-Fi connection.
Wi-Fi improves when you move close to the router, but Ethernet is unavailable. Investigate local coverage and placement; a distant room may have a weaker Wi-Fi link than the service reaching the router.
Wired and nearby Wi-Fi tests are both poor with other household use paused. Check plan data use, provider notices, weather, terminal view, cables, power, and equipment indicators before concluding the provider network is at fault.
Results vary with time or when other people are online. Record the time and household activity, then check for competing use, peak-period effects, and your plan’s data policy.

The comparisons are clues, not guarantees. If the cable, adapter, or port is loose, damaged, or incompatible, a wired test can mislead. Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance calls out Ethernet adapters or extensions and physical connections among the items to check. Starlink’s intermittent-connectivity troubleshooting guidance

Use this sequence to diagnose slow speeds or dropouts

Change one thing at a time and retest. If you alter placement, band settings, and cabling all at once, you will not know which change affected the result. Record the conditions alongside each test so you can describe a recurring pattern to support.

1. Establish a baseline

  1. Choose one device and note whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Record the time and any speed-test download, upload, and latency results the test displays.
  2. Note whether other household users are streaming, downloading, gaming, or on calls. Pause their internet use for a second test if practical; Viasat recommends stopping household usage before testing.
  3. Run the second test with the device near the router. Compare the result with the original rather than treating either number as a guaranteed service speed.
  4. Repeat later if the problem seems time-dependent. Viasat says its speeds can be slower during evening peak periods, so a test taken at one time may not represent performance at another.

Keep the device and test method the same where possible. If you switch devices, locations, or test services between runs, note that too: a change in result may reflect the local device or test conditions rather than a change in the satellite connection.

2. Compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi

If the router or provider equipment has a usable Ethernet port, connect a device with a compatible cable and test again. Check that both ends are fully seated and inspect any Ethernet adapter or extension in the path. A Cat6 cable can be an optional cable for a wired test, but it is not a universal requirement or a fix for the satellite signal. Verify the cable and port fit your equipment.

If wired results are materially better, prioritize the local Wi-Fi connection. If wired and Wi-Fi results are similarly poor, continue to the account, service-status, environmental, and equipment checks. The comparison cannot by itself identify which upstream cause is responsible.

3. Check plan data use and provider notices

Sign in to your provider’s app or account and look for data use, plan terms, service notices, and outage information. Do not assume every satellite plan handles an allowance in the same way. Viasat describes Standard Data and possible peak-time prioritization for certain plans; the terms vary by plan, and its Unleashed details depend on local availability. Hughesnet says that exceeding plan data may mean slower speeds during high-traffic periods. Read the policy for your own plan rather than applying either provider’s rule to another service. Viasat slow-speed and plan guidance · Hughesnet connectivity and data guidance

If your account indicates that a data allowance or prioritization policy applies, consider whether the slowdown began after heavier-than-usual use. That timing is useful evidence, but it is not proof of the cause: compare it with test results, service notices, and the times when slowdowns occur.

4. Inspect the terminal, connections, power, and weather

  • Open the provider app or account and check for service alerts, equipment warnings, or an obstruction report. Use the provider’s own status information for your specific installation.
  • Look for new trees, branches, buildings, or other objects that may obstruct the terminal’s view. Starlink identifies installation and obstruction among intermittent-connectivity troubleshooting factors. Do not climb onto a roof or move a mount in unsafe conditions; use the provider’s installation or support route if a line-of-sight change is needed.
  • Check visible cable runs and connectors for looseness or damage, and check that equipment is powered and its indicators match the provider’s instructions. Hughesnet advises checking modem lights and cables as part of troubleshooting.
  • Note whether dropouts coincide with severe weather. Also consider weather at the provider gateway: Hughesnet says gateway-area weather can affect service even when the customer’s local sky is clear.

Viasat says cloud cover and light rain or snow should not interrupt its service, while very severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms may cause a temporary loss of connection. Hughesnet similarly identifies heavy thunderstorms and heavy snow or ice storms as possible causes of intermittent connectivity or temporary loss. These are provider-specific statements, not a promise that all satellite services respond identically to weather. Viasat weather guidance · Hughesnet weather guidance

5. Make one change and retest

Once the comparison points to a likely cause, make a single low-risk change and repeat your test under similar conditions. For a local Wi-Fi issue, try placing the router centrally and in the open, away from obvious obstructions. Viasat gives the same placement advice for improving Wi-Fi coverage. If your router supports separate Wi-Fi bands, Starlink advises separating bands where supported and connecting nearby, high-bandwidth devices to 5 GHz. That is a local wireless adjustment; it does not remove an obstruction or change provider-side congestion.

For a connection problem that may involve equipment, follow your provider’s restart instructions rather than improvising a power sequence. Hughesnet advises restarting equipment as part of its troubleshooting guidance. After a restart, allow equipment to reconnect as directed by your provider, then record whether the symptom changes. A restart is a diagnostic step, not evidence that the cause has been permanently fixed.

6. Escalate a persistent fault with evidence

If service does not recover after severe weather clears, or the problem persists after basic checks, contact your provider through its support channel. Give support the test times and results, whether the tests were wired or Wi-Fi, which devices were affected, the household-use conditions, any app alerts, the weather pattern, and the checks you have already completed. A record of intermittent failures is more useful than “it is slow” because it can show whether the fault recurs at a certain time, under a certain condition, or across multiple devices.

Improve Wi-Fi only when the tests implicate Wi-Fi

Router changes are worthwhile when the device-to-router connection is the weak part of the path. They will not correct a plan data policy, a blocked satellite view, a damaged outdoor connection, or congestion beyond the home. Use the wired-versus-wireless comparison and the near-router test to decide whether to work on Wi-Fi.

Placement and coverage

Place the router in a central, open location rather than inside a cabinet or at the far edge of the home, where practical. This can improve local coverage to devices; it cannot improve the satellite terminal’s view of the sky. If performance is poor only in a particular room, compare there with a test near the router before changing other equipment.

Band selection and household traffic

If your router exposes separate bands, use the provider’s or router maker’s instructions to separate them where supported. Starlink advises using 5 GHz for high-bandwidth devices when band separation is available. Treat this as a way to manage the local wireless connection, not as an across-the-board speed upgrade: device distance, router capability, and the surrounding environment still matter.

When testing, pause other household use so you can tell whether competing activity is affecting the result. If performance falls when others are online, record which activity overlaps with the slowdown and compare again when use is paused. Viasat also notes that peak-period congestion can affect speed on its service. Viasat guidance on household use and peak periods

VPNs and the device

A VPN can affect measured internet speed, but the size of the effect depends on the particular service and setup. Hughesnet states that VPN use “will reduce the speed of your internet service by up to 70%.” That is Hughesnet’s stated maximum, not an independent estimate or a guaranteed reduction for every VPN user. If your speed test is unexpectedly low while a VPN is active, compare a test with it off only if doing so is appropriate for your privacy and work requirements; do not treat the provider’s maximum as a prediction for your connection. If only one device has a problem while other devices perform normally in the same place and at the same time, include that difference in your diagnosis. Starlink lists personal devices, interference, and concurrent connections among factors that can affect performance. A device-specific result is a reason to investigate that device’s connection, not to assume the whole satellite service is failing. Starlink specifications and performance factors

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Understand latency and avoid chasing the wrong number

Download speed is not the only measure that can matter. Latency describes how long a signal takes to travel and return; it can affect the feel of interactive tasks such as calls and gaming even when a download test looks acceptable. Record the latency value if your test reports it, and compare it across repeated tests under similar conditions rather than relying on one reading.

Starlink’s published specifications state that latency ranges between 25 and 60 ms on land and 100+ ms in certain remote locations. These are published specifications, not a guaranteed result for every subscriber or moment; the same specification page says performance depends on conditions. Use the figures as context for interpreting that provider’s published service information, not as a pass/fail target for another provider or an individual test. Starlink specifications

For a dropout, note the time and duration as well as the speed before or after it. A speed test run during a stable connection cannot explain why the connection disappeared minutes earlier. App alerts, weather timing, physical checks, and repeated observations help distinguish an intermittent fault from a one-time test anomaly.

Choose a remedy based on the cause, not the symptom

Likely cause Evidence to look for Reasonable next step
Weak local Wi-Fi Wired testing is better, or performance improves close to the router. Adjust router placement, band use, or local coverage; retest before considering replacement hardware.
Competing household use Results improve when other use is paused or worsen when several devices are active. Repeat tests with use paused and record which activities overlap with slowdowns.
Plan data policy or congestion Account usage or plan terms coincide with the slowdown; performance may vary by time. Check your provider’s account and plan-specific rules, then ask support to clarify how they apply.
Obstruction or installation issue Provider app warning, a changed view of the terminal, or recurring interruption not explained by local Wi-Fi. Follow the provider’s installation guidance and arrange support for unsafe or difficult access.
Weather-related interruption Dropouts align with severe weather or a provider notice; service may recover as conditions clear. Record the weather and recovery time; contact support if the interruption persists after conditions improve.
Cable, power, or equipment fault Loose or visibly damaged connections, unexpected indicator lights, or a problem across wired and wireless tests. Check connections and indicators using provider instructions; report persistent faults.
Provider-side intermittent issue Multiple devices and wired tests are affected, local checks show no clear cause, or provider alerts appear. Provide support with timestamps, repeated results, alerts, and the troubleshooting steps completed.

Do not buy a replacement router just because the satellite connection is slow. Consider one only after testing shows that local Wi-Fi is the weak link and the current router is inadequate for your home or devices. The available provider guidance does not establish one router model as a universal solution. Likewise, an Ethernet cable is useful for diagnosis when the equipment is compatible; it does not repair the satellite signal or resolve provider congestion.

What to tell support when the problem remains

Before opening a support request, assemble a short record rather than repeating every test from memory. Include:

  • The dates and times of slowdowns or dropouts, including whether the issue is continuous or intermittent.
  • Download, upload, and latency results, if available, along with whether each test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • The affected device and whether other devices had the same problem at the same time.
  • Whether household use was paused, and whether the result changed near the router.
  • Plan-data status, provider notices, app alerts, relevant weather, and any visible cable or equipment issue.
  • The checks already completed, including any restart performed according to provider instructions.

This information lets support compare a local wireless symptom with a broader service interruption and decide what to check next. Follow that provider’s directions for its specific terminal, router, account, and service generation; installation and troubleshooting instructions are not interchangeable across plans or providers.
