To improve PS2 emulation on a PS5, first confirm that the game is genuinely running below its intended speed, then use PS5SX2’s on-screen FPS and EE/GS/VU load readings to identify the bottleneck. Adjust that game’s settings one at a time—usually internal resolution, a frame-rate patch, EE timing, MTVU, or GPU readback—and retest the same slow scene. PS5SX2 is a community PCSX2 port for a jailbroken PS5, not a standard PS5 feature; setup, firmware support and the required helper payload are documented in the project README.
Before changing anything: what “slow” means
PS2SX2 can show a lower number than 60 FPS without being slow. Many PS2 games were designed around a 30 FPS cap, and some European PAL releases use a 25 FPS cap. PCSX2’s FAQ lists the original console output timings as 59.94 FPS for NTSC and 50 FPS for PAL, but those output rates do not mean every game generated a new frame at that rate. A stable 30 or 25 FPS can therefore be correct behavior rather than an emulation problem. Check the game’s normal cadence before trying to force a higher one.
For this guide, “slow” means a real-time problem such as frame-rate drops, slow-motion gameplay, audio that stutters or falls behind, or a visible dip in the FPS graph. Failure to boot, crashes, black screens and corrupted graphics are different faults. Performance tweaks rarely repair those problems; preserve the relevant logs and report them through the project’s issue process instead.

1. Confirm the slowdown at a repeatable point
Choose a section where the problem is easy to reproduce: a busy level, an effects-heavy fight, a menu transition or a specific cutscene. Let the game run there for at least several seconds, and preferably a full minute when you plan to collect logs. Note whether the issue is a brief stutter, a sustained speed reduction, audio breakup or a crash.
- Record the game title and region (NTSC or PAL).
- Note whether a 50/60 FPS patch, widescreen patch or other code is enabled.
- Write down the current internal resolution, graphics enhancements and per-game speed settings.
- Record the PS5 model (original, Slim or Pro), firmware version and PS5SX2 build.
- Use the same save state or in-game location for every comparison.
Keeping the test location constant prevents a setting change from being credited for a difference caused by a different scene. A title that is steady at its original cap should not be “fixed” merely because a counter does not show 60.
2. Turn on FPS and load information
Open PS5SX2’s Settings page and set the information box to show FPS and load. Reproduce the slowdown, then watch the FPS graph and the EE, GS and VU percentages. The PS5SX2 performance guide uses these readings as workload indicators:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- EE (Emotion Engine): the emulated PS2 main processor, including game code and many CPU-side tasks.
- GS (Graphics Synthesizer): the graphics workload handled by the emulated renderer; high internal resolution usually increases this load.
- VU (vector unit): geometry and other vector processing. The reading is particularly relevant when MTVU is enabled.
The thread that stays at or near 100 percent while FPS falls is the likely limit. Treat the numbers as diagnostic clues, not a universal pass/fail benchmark. A short spike may not explain a sustained slowdown, while a graph dip can reveal exactly where to inspect the readings.
When seeking help, include a screenshot or written record of the readings at the slow point. Also include the game and region, console model, firmware, resolution, patches, settings and the tested location. PS5SX2’s built-in profiler and periodic settings logs can show where time is being spent, which is more useful than reporting only a low FPS number.

3. Create a per-game baseline
Make changes in the game-specific profile rather than applying aggressive global defaults. PS5SX2 exposes resolution, display filters, graphics options, EE cycle rate and skip controls, MTVU, GPU readback choices and patch toggles. A setting that helps one title can reduce accuracy or create glitches in another.
- Start with the game at its current settings and record FPS, EE, GS and VU at the repeatable slow point.
- Change one option only.
- Return to the same scene and let it run long enough for the graph and audio to settle.
- Keep the change only if it improves sustained speed without introducing visual, audio or stability problems.
- If it does not help, revert it before testing the next option.
This process makes the result reversible and identifies the setting that actually matters. The project’s guide summarizes the approach as “Most slow games get better with a few settings,” but that wording is guidance from the PS5SX2 project, not a guarantee for every title.
4. Match the setting to the bottleneck
| Reading at the slowdown | First test | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| GS is near 100%; EE and VU have headroom | Lower internal resolution one step; disable costly display filters or enhancements. | Image becomes softer, but FPS and audio should recover if rendering was the limit. |
| EE is near 100%; GS is below its limit | Test the title’s EE cycle-rate or EE-skip options. For a patched title, compare the documented per-game setting rather than changing resolution first. | Higher speed can alter timing or accuracy. Check game logic, audio and cutscenes for new errors. |
| VU is near 100% while MTVU is active | Compare the game with MTVU enabled and disabled, using the same scene. | MTVU can move vector work to another thread, but compatibility is title-specific; keep whichever mode is stable and faster. |
| Slowdown occurs in a readback-heavy game | Test the GPU readback option described for that title, including “Don’t wait” where applicable. | “Don’t wait” may improve speed but can cause flicker. Restore the more accurate option if graphics break. |
| No load thread remains high, but a 60 FPS patch is enabled | Disable the patch and compare with the game’s original frame-rate behavior. | A patch can substantially increase emulation work or introduce timing and compatibility issues. |
When GS or GPU work is the limit
Internal resolution is the most direct graphics-side adjustment. Reducing it lowers the number of pixels the renderer must process; filters and other enhancements can add work as well. Make the smallest reduction that removes the dip so image quality is not sacrificed unnecessarily. If the game is still GS-limited, disable additional enhancements before changing unrelated CPU settings.
When EE or game-code work is the limit
EE cycle rate and EE skip trade emulation accuracy for speed. Test them cautiously and per game. A faster setting can cause incorrect physics, missing effects, audio problems or crashes even when the FPS counter improves. The PS5SX2 repository includes title-specific examples in which increasing EE cycle rate helped a patched game, so use the tested-game notes as a starting point rather than treating one value as universal.
When vector processing is the limit
MTVU changes how vector-unit work is scheduled. Compare both states at the same heavy scene. A lower VU reading with MTVU does not automatically mean the game is correct; verify gameplay, menus, cutscenes and sound before keeping it. Some titles benefit, while others require the more conservative mode.

When GPU readbacks are the limit
Readbacks are a special case in which the emulated game asks the GPU for data. The performance guide specifically discusses Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III and OutRun 2006. For those readback-heavy titles, the “Don’t wait” choice can reduce slowdown, but the guide warns that visual flicker may occur. Use it only as a per-game experiment and return to the accurate option if the image is unstable.

5. Treat resolution and enhancements as a workload budget
Increasing internal resolution improves sharpness but increases GS work. A title that is smooth at native or a modest upscale can dip at a much higher value, especially when effects or a 60 FPS patch are active. If your GS reading rises toward its limit at the exact moment FPS falls, reduce resolution before attempting CPU-side changes.
Enhancements should be tested in isolation. Turn off a filter, texture enhancement or other optional effect, retest, and then decide whether the visual benefit is worth the measured cost. Do not assume that every graphical option has the same impact: the load display tells you whether the change addressed the actual bottleneck.
6. Be cautious with 50/60 FPS patches
A 60 FPS patch is not a free performance upgrade. The PS5SX2 tested-game table notes that doubling frame rate doubles the work the emulator must perform. A patched game may therefore need a lower resolution or fewer enhancements than the unpatched version. If FPS drops, audio slows or timing becomes erratic after enabling a patch, compare directly with the original game cap.
Patches are title-specific and can introduce compatibility problems. They may alter timing, break menus or cause crashes, and not every game has a reliable patch. Keep the patch disabled while establishing a baseline, then enable it only if the title’s notes support it and your console can sustain the extra workload. A patch that displays 60 FPS is not automatically a better experience than a stable original 30 FPS mode.

7. Understand NTSC and PAL timing before judging FPS
PCSX2 documents 59.94 FPS NTSC output and 50 FPS PAL output in its FAQ. Those are video-output timings; individual games can internally update at lower rates. The PS5SX2 guide calls out common 30 FPS caps and 25 FPS behavior for some PAL discs. Compare your result with the same region and release, because importing a PAL version or switching to a 60 FPS patch changes the expected cadence.
Use audio pitch, game speed and the FPS graph together. If a game remains synchronized, steady and responsive at its known cap, lowering resolution or changing EE timing may only reduce accuracy without making it “faster.”
8. Read the project’s compatibility notes correctly
The PS5SX2 repository’s tested-game table reports 108 games started as of September 2026. It explicitly warns that the list is a sample, not a compatibility guarantee, and that results can change with game revisions, emulator builds, firmware, settings and console model. A result shown for one machine should not be treated as a promise for every PS5.
Use the table to find title-specific hints—such as a recommended patch, an observed high-resolution dip or a known crash—then reproduce the test on your own console. Record the exact conditions instead of quoting a single FPS number without context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. Collect logs when tuning does not solve it
If the same scene remains slow after measured, reversible changes, gather evidence for a report. The performance guide recommends playing the slow section for at least a minute before downloading logs because performance information is recorded periodically. The README also describes a built-in profiler that records where time is spent.

This distinguishes a tuning issue from a renderer, compatibility or firmware regression. Avoid claiming that a setting “fixed” a game unless the improvement is repeatable at the same location and no new fault appears.
PS5 hardware: what a Pro can and cannot change
The PS5SX2 performance guide states that a regular PS5 or Slim has less graphics power than a PS5 Pro. That makes the Pro a possible hardware consideration when your diagnostics show a persistent GS-side limit, but it is not a substitute for per-game tuning. The project’s results span both classes of console without establishing a controlled, universal performance gain.
Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement describes upgraded PSSR as an image-upscaling technology for supported PS5 Pro titles. It does not state that PSSR accelerates PS5SX2 or reduces the emulator’s workload, so PSSR is not a PS2 emulation performance setting. Likewise, official PlayStation backward-compatibility information should not be read as confirmation of a built-in PS2 emulator on PS5; PS5SX2 remains a separate community project.
A practical decision sequence
- Verify the target rate: establish whether the title is meant to run at 30, 25, 50 or 59.94/60 FPS for its region and patch state.
- Measure the dip: enable FPS and load information and identify whether EE, GS or VU approaches 100 percent.
- Keep the profile per game: save changes only for the affected title.
- Remove extra work first: lower resolution or disable enhancements for a GS-bound title; disable a 60 FPS patch if its added workload is the cause.
- Test CPU-side controls: compare EE cycle rate/skip and MTVU only when the readings point to those components.
- Handle readbacks separately: test “Don’t wait” only for a title known to benefit, and reverse it if flicker appears.
- Retest and document: use the same scene, listen for audio changes and check stability after every single adjustment.
- Escalate with logs: if no setting produces a stable result, submit the complete measurements and system details.
This method preserves image quality and accuracy wherever the console has headroom while concentrating compromises on the component that actually limits the game.
