You can reduce some of Chrome’s data exposure by blocking third-party cookies, tightening site permissions, and choosing a Safe Browsing level deliberately. These settings do not make you anonymous or stop websites from processing information you provide. The steps below use Chrome’s desktop controls; labels and availability may vary by version, operating system, account, or administrator policy.

Block third-party cookies, then add exceptions only when needed

Third-party cookies can let content embedded on one site access cookie data associated with another. Blocking them can limit that cross-site access, but it may also disrupt features such as embedded sign-ins or media.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
  2. Select Block third-party cookies.
  3. If a trusted site’s feature stops working, test it and add an exception for that site rather than allowing third-party cookies everywhere. Chrome also offers a temporary site-level allowance. Google’s help page says a regular browsing exception remains for 90 days or until you turn it off; an Incognito allowance lasts for that session. Managed work or school devices may restrict these controls. Google’s third-party cookie and site-data instructions explain the available controls.

Deleting cookies is different from blocking them. To clear them, use Chrome’s Delete browsing data flow and choose a time range. This can sign you out of sites and remove saved preferences. To delete data for one site instead, open Third-party cookies → See all site data and permissions.

Review site permissions by category

Sites may ask for access to sensitive capabilities or send notifications. Set sensible defaults, then grant access only to the sites and tasks that need it.

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
  2. Review categories including location, camera, microphone, notifications, pop-ups and redirects, intrusive ads, embedded content, and local network access.
  3. For each category, set the default you want and remove access from sites that no longer need it. Pay particular attention to location, camera, and microphone.
  4. If a site feature stops working, check that site’s specific permission before changing the global default.

Google’s site-permission guidance describes how to manage defaults and individual sites.

Choose a Safe Browsing level with its data tradeoff in mind

Safe Browsing checks for dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. Google documents three desktop options. Standard Protection is the documented default; Enhanced Protection offers additional checks but sends more browsing-related information to Google. Turning protection off is not a privacy shortcut worth recommending: it removes these warnings.

Setting What Google says it does Data and tradeoff
Standard Protection Checks against known dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. Google says privacy servers obscure part of URLs in the ordinary check. If a site behaves suspiciously, Chrome sends full URLs and bits of page content.
Enhanced Protection Can warn about threats Google has not already identified. Sends URLs, a small sample of page content, extension activity, and system information to Google Safe Browsing for additional checks.
No protection Disables Safe Browsing protection. You lose protection against harmful sites, downloads, and extensions.

To find the controls, open Settings → Privacy and security → Security and choose a Safe Browsing level. The security and data-flow descriptions above are from Google’s Safe Browsing settings help and Google’s Safe Browsing privacy explanation.

Do not treat Do Not Track as a blocker

Chrome’s Do Not Track option sends a request asking websites not to track you; each site decides whether to honor it. Google says most websites and services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior in response. It is a request, not a dependable tracking block. Google’s Do Not Track guidance explains this limitation.

Use Incognito for limited local privacy, not anonymity

Incognito is intended to help keep browsing private from other people who use the same device. Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito, but that does not make you anonymous or prevent websites from processing information you send them. Google describes the purpose of Incognito in its Chrome privacy overview; cookie behavior is covered in its third-party cookie help.

Enable prompts before unsecured connections

Turn on Always use secure connections in Settings → Privacy and security → Security. Chrome will prompt before using an unsecured connection; if a site does not support HTTPS, it displays a warning. HTTPS encrypts the connection between Chrome and the site, but it does not stop the site from processing information you submit. Check the site name carefully, and do not submit sensitive information to a site flagged as not secure or dangerous. See Google’s secure-connection help.

What these settings can and cannot do

  • Cookie controls can limit cross-site cookie access, with possible compatibility costs.
  • Site permissions let you restrict access to device capabilities and other site features.
  • Safe Browsing is a choice between levels of threat checking and the associated data sent to Google.
  • Do Not Track and Incognito have narrower effects than their names may suggest; neither guarantees that sites will not track or process data.
  • HTTPS protects a connection in transit, not the information a site receives or how it uses that information.

Google Chrome Help puts the choice this way: “However, privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all.” These controls are documented by Google, but they do not independently establish Chrome’s overall privacy posture or compare it with other browsers.
